We were lucky enough to view the launch of Telefonica at the Marina Rubicon, Lanzarote today. She's one magnificent boat, thoughtfully designed and well constructed . We were quite impressed with the lee board, reminded us of the Thames Barges at home.

Bringing the Boat

Maintenance - time to get started: It's
not long now until the season starts in earnest, in eight weeks
time you could be out and about doing what you enjoy most, whatever that may be. For those of you who may have skimped on the laying up, you should get out there and do penance in the form of greasing seacocks and wheel bearings, seeing if your battery has made it through
the winter and to check all the cold water system to see if anything has parted due to frost. You can't beat a bit of preventative maintenance to save cash in the long run.

Antifouling: Every
year we say the same thing (apply it properly) and get the same response from certain boat owners (it don't work) ... Antifoul needs to be applied correctly for it to work,
even the cheap stuff. There are very few reasons for antifoul not to work, these are: incorrect mixing, wrong type for the area, incorrect application. The antifoul manufacturers
don't to go to all the effort of formulating something fairly evil and then write detailed instructions just to have them ignored.

If you want to apply antifoul, look around to see what other people are using and temper the choice to suit the type of boating you do. If you have a boat in a mud berth and go ditch crawling every other weekend or so, you'll be wasting money on a high tech product, it's really horses for courses here.

Electrical Connections:
Have you checked the state of your wiring recently. This is the
Cinderella of the salt water world. Copper and damp, especially salt laden damp are not good bedfellows, the copper will oxidise (green and crumbly) and eventually the circuit will fail. It's always good to used tinned copper wire on board, it's more expensive but it will survive better. And if you have the green connection problem, it is probably
already migrating up the wire.

Laying up time

It seems to have come around very quickly this year. There’s always a long list of things to do before you leave the boat for the winter. Here’s a short list of jobs that need to be done and things that need to be checked.

If she’s staying afloat for the winter, check the mooring lines or warp for wear and replace if necessary, there’s no harm in doubling up on the lines either. Check that fenders are in good condition too. It’s also an idea to make sure that the cleats are in good order and up to surviving the winter gales.

If you have time and are able, give all the seacock’s a greasing, better now than unseizing in the spring.

The heads (toilet) would benefit from a bit of post season attention, it should be thoroughly cleaned and drained. If the seals or pump is getting tired, why not service it now. In any case pumping some olive oil through is well worthwhile.

Look after your batteries too – check the levels and top up with distilled water and if you haven’t got a shore power charger or solar power charging system but you do have 240v available, fit a small trickle charger, these are readily available from car spares shops. Otherwise, remove the batteries and take them home for charging.

The engine will need some attention too. For inboards, drain and replace the oil, check that sufficient antifreeze is in the cooling system, if in doubt drain and replace. Have a look at the drive belts and anode as well. Outboards with seawater cooling must be flushed through with fresh water. Give the unit a quick spray with fogging oil.

Damp is bad thing. You get mildew, nasty smells and damage to material so fit a dehumidifier, anything is better than nothing – crystal based to electronic – something for all budgets…
