Richard Ramirez, California "Night Stalker" Dead of Cancer.

Richard Ramirez, the infamous "Night Stalker" who terrorized California in the 80's with a string of violent break-ins, rapes and murders, died June 7th from cancer at a hospital.

Not that we should "celebrate" a death or remember someone who did such terrible things...but I've always found the stories behind serial killers both horrific and fascinating.

What makes someone become a monster instead of a normal old human being like the rest of us?

Nonsense. The Beginning.

I think I can trace back many of my art tendencies to my first initial infatuation with Henri Matisse...but much of my current mark-making, I think, came about much more recently. As stated in the "Men of Influence" post from yesterday (http://marionart23.blogspot.com/2013/06/men-of-influence-series.html) I took a break from painting a few years ago that lasted as long as any art-break I could imagine....a few months. And though I didn't quite fall in love with ink drawing nearly to the extent that I have with painting, some invaluable "switches" were turned over the few months of mark-making.

Take a look at a few of the first drawings...some of the first instances that I worked a bit of illustration and type into my art....one of those "ah ha!" moments where nothing is really ever the same...at least in terms of art.

Men of Influence. A Series.

About 4-5 years ago I took a bit of a break from painting...but fear not, I did not take a break from art. I decided to get into ink drawing and explore a world a bit more reliant on line-work and mark-making...and there is not one sign of that exploration anywhere in my art today (sarcasm button needed for that last sentence)

In the midst of that break, I decided to do a series on people that were influential...both good and bad. Take a look at the short but fun series largely inspired by personal interest and documentary watching...and maybe I'll pick it up again sometime soon to add some more recent inspirations to the list...
