Early on, the oak seemed to be far more powerful than that, although it showed with less of a vanilla overlay than just a pure wood impression. I frankly wasn't sure I liked it at all. That said, this has surprisingly good acidity, which cuts through the oak easily and changes the demeanor of the wine rather dramatically. It makes it seem fairly powerful and intense, with a whole lot goin' on. It kept evolving as it aired out - a very good sign - and integrating its oak. I liked it more and more as it aired and warmed. Oak-a-phobes - and considering the price, bargain hunters as well--will be happier with the regular Branco, which is quite fine in this vintage and obviously a better value that offers a lot more bang for the buck. Still, if you can ignore the price point, this has a lot going for it and its pure intensity may make it a better matchup for richer foods. In fact, as an experiment, after tasting it in a controlled tasting, I tried it with some cheeses and it matched up far better than the regular Branco. Surprisingly crisp for this vintage, it has a mouthwatering finish and very nice focus, a certain lingering intensity that makes it both gripping and intense, particularly early on. This is the key value point in the lineup - this regular Branco can be quite fine, competing pretty well with the small production, very pricey Reserva Branco in back-to-back vintages now. Although the styles are rather different, they both show some class and breeding and the ability to evolve in the glass, rather than being just simple, fresh whites.
