<itunes:summary>(Podcast is published below this article)
Did you know that most mobile or "wedding DJs" have to supplement their income by working another full-time job or by renting extra equipment because they can't or won't charge enough to live on? Did you know that some of the most talented performers among mobile DJs struggle with income because of artificially depressed markets, which are artificially depressed because of DJs charging less than the value of the services they're providing?
One of the toughest things I've ever had to do in my life has been to help average DJs see that what they do as average DJs is more valuable and worth more than they charge.
One of the reasons is because good DJs tell average DJs that they aren't good enough to charge something they could live on. Sometimes, it's because average DJs tell other average DJs that they aren't "worth" more. Many times, it's because big multi-system companies set the price below what an AV rental company would charge for a sound system alone. Average DJs are forced to compete.
That makes me sad.
In the meantime, the public routinely spends more for chair covers, photo booths, veggie platters, and sales tax than they do on the one thing that actually has a direct affect on the outcome of their events - the DJ. DJs have been commoditized in the worst way by themselves and the people who hire them.
Just like average mechanics or plumbers or framers or electricians or nail-pounders - even completely unskilled labor like "roustabouts" - can earn a living; so should average DJs - whether they work for a multi-system company or not.
There are lots of average tradespeople and professional people, doing average work who make a living for their families. Perhaps it's not the "big bucks" - perhaps they don't own the new car or the big house on the golf course, but they can afford insurance, put a roof over their heads, and take a vacation once a year.
I believe the same should be true for average DJs. But it isn't.

The majority of mobile DJs are average. Plumbers and mechanics don't have to "blow away" an audience or "sell" anyone. But they get paid, without special effort, what they are worth. But average DJs are expected to be spectacular - embody polished entertainment and speaking skills, music knowledge and programming skills, and provide and set up equipment that costs thousands of dollars - equipment which routinely rents for $800 or more at major hotels.
What average mobile DJs provide is worth more than many people give credit for...when you really think about it.
In any trade or profession, there are "average", "above average", and "below average". It's not unique to DJs. In other trades, it's the "below average" people who struggle - NOT the average people. But with DJs, even the above average ones struggle. They set a price out of fear instead of a solid business plan based on the value they provide. They generally charge about the same amount - give or take a few hundred dollars - that other DJs charge because they're afraid clients won't pay more. It's a self-fulling prophecy.
I'm a friend of "average" DJs. I want "average" DJs to be able to provide for their families as DJs if they want to. It's not about justifying a higher price or "gouging" customers. It's about being paid an amount that is equal to the services rendered. It's only a living wage that we're talking about here.
But if a DJ doesn't truly understand the value s/he brings, s/he won't know how to place a value on it. This is where many "average" DJs are - they don't truly understand the enormous value they provide through their services. It's like they are selling a Jackson Pollock for $10 at a garage sale.
In my travels around the country, I get a sense of what DJs are charging for their services. From emails and posts in forums, I get a sense of DJs' frustrations and challenges. From teaching workshops and watching videos of DJs online, I get a sense of their abilities.
From that,</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The MarBecca Method is unique and specific. It is more complex than it appears on the surface. It's the kind of thing that takes a bit of exposure to fully understand. It is something we lived for over 35 years, drawing from experience and training in the entertainment industry and corporate event planning. As it's practiced and worked with, it becomes more and more clear to someone working with the concepts. Then suddenly, it makes astounding sense — as many MarBecca Method workshop attendees can attest to. As a recent attendee extolled after his fifth workshop, "Something just clicked!" And his performance had blossomed.
We teach it a certain way and zero in on the specificity of why, when, and how. Especially as it pertains to The Love Story because it is a concept that we conceived and delivered. It is what we were famous for, as our signature piece.
It may not be readily apparent but there's a 'method to our madness', so all the details of the MarBecca Method are best not rearranged  or left out. The key motivation driving what we do must remain intact. There is purpose behind every detail, however subtle.
Why practice the MarBecca Method? To achieve the same/similar results as ours.
What are those results?

	effortless bookings
	"Shout of Mouth" advertising
	charge 5x the market price
	meaningful interaction with clients
	longevity
	better control of events
	a full calendar

Of course, there's more. But here's my point - a very sharp one: If you want those results, we can show you how we did it. Because we did it. What we teach is not mere "theory" or conjecture. We'll give you all the pieces to the puzzle and help you assemble them to create the whole picture. It takes a partnership, a commitment to understand, and trust. And here's the surprise - it's FUN too! Because "play" is an integral part of the MarBecca Method.
You may be doing things differently. You may have been taught by others to do things differently than I teach. And those ways might be working for you, so my methods may seem unnecessary and foreign. If so, keep in mind that the same things applied to folks who drove a horse and buggy upon discovering the automobile. Be open to new and better possibilities.
If you're struggling. If you're not charging what you want to be charging; if sales aren't coming easily; if you have to market and network like crazy to get bookings; if your calendar is full of holes - even at a price lower than 5x average; I can confidently tell you that all the nit-picky details of how we did what we did and why we did what we did ... all the stuff we teach in workshop ... is what propelled us and it would propel you too.
This blog will always reflect these principles and provide information and answers to help you achieve success with this method, as seen through the prism of MarBecca's success.
The attached podcast is a recording of a recent Master of Ceremonies workshop explaining the genesis of the MarBecca Method.

Following that presentation, I was invited to speak to a variety of other associations in California, which led to an invitation to speak at national trade show - Mobile Beat DJ show - in Las Vegas in 1998 where I gave a 30-minute version of the seminar.
I was invited back to Mobile Beat, Las Vegas and Cleveland, to Keynote in 2000. By then, I had divided the seminar up into 4 parts: "Realizing", "Believing", "Communicating", and "Being" "What You're Worth." These four parts were presented in 3 seminars - the keynote speech being the first.
This seminar is as relevant today as it was 15 years ago - for mobile DJs and for small business owners who hesitate to charge a price that allows them to provide for their families and their future. And, in this economy, its importance is exacerbated. Here's a brief outline of the four parts of GWYW:

You must REALIZE what you're worth. Understanding the inherent value of what you offer gives you new perspective.
You must BELIEVE what you're worth. Once you realize your value, you must internalize it. If you don't believe it yourself, there's no way you can effectively communicate that value to potential clients.
You must COMMUNICATE what you're worth. If you believe it, you can sell it. Communicating your worth to a potential client is easy once you realize it and believe it because you've thoroughly examined why you are worth it.
You must BE what you're worth. Being what you're worth completes the circle. It allows you to realize, believe, and communicate your worth. Without BEING what you're worth, you'll never pull yourself out of the commodity class and are doomed to the dog-eat-dog world of the bell curve - where the majority of DJs exist.

The following is a recording of the first half of the keynote, "Realizing What You're Worth":

"Value is set by the status quo. It's what our clients consider 'customary and reasonable'."

"Strength to change comes from knowing your worth."

"Are you worth more than a veggie platter?"

"Be worth more than broccoli."

"A party is by definition an entertainment function - it's a function of entertainment."

"It is a food function when their guests leave the party 3 hours early just after eating. But most clients don't want their guests to leave early."

"It's the entertainment that drives a function - any function - from a cocktail party to the Academy Awards."

And… You can quote me on that.

In 2006, I launched a concept that, I believe, was unique - at least at the time. "Podcasts" were mostly amateurish, horribly produced ramblings in 2006. I wanted to produce broadcast-quality shows, but more... I wanted to create a "radio station" with a diverse cast of personalities. The personalities were to range from caustic to benign to bizarre, which was the plan. The point was to get listeners, so controversy was built-in. "Love us or hate us, but please don't be complacent." We also provided some educational content, but it was mostly about raising awareness that there is something more than the usual DJ song-n-dance - challenging mobile DJs to be more professional. Thousands of DJs downloaded the shows over a span of 5 years and many still listen to the shows, despite the fact that the last official show was recorded in December of 2006. It was a ton of work and cost me a ton of money to put together, so I'm glad that people are still enjoying them.
Recently, I was searching for something on my computer and got sidetracked when I stumbled upon a folder that contained all of the old shows, which are no longer available as a download on iTunes. I continue to get requests for ways to download the podcasts, so I'm thinking about publishing them again.
It was a labor of love and hate - loved the concept, the result, the camaraderie - hated the deadlines, trying to get advertising, and managing the "podcast personalities." But, listening to a show or two was nostalgic for me and I decided to post a question in a Facebook forum asking if folks would like DJA Radio to come back. The response was mostly favorable. So I just might start podcasting again.
I promised the guys and gals over in the forum that had never heard a DJA Radio show that I would post one here. Ya gotta keep your promises, ya know. :)
And… You can quote me on that.
