We hear it all the time about ballplayers….”He’s in the zone”…..meaning just nailing everything right and effortlessly.

Is it fact or is it fiction?….just one of those times when things just break the players’ way?

Turns out being is the ‘zone’ is a fact.  And the travel industry figured it out…..and regularly runs their pilots through a fun game to help the get in the ‘zone.’  NASA does the same thing.

I’m not kidding…..you can get in the ‘zone’ in MLM anytime you want, and get ‘yes-yes-yes’ to looking at you business all day long.

Z – Zero

O – Out

N – Negative

E – Effects

There are really just a couple of things you need to do to get yourself into the ‘zone’ and become successful in network marketing.

The pilots learn, through study and practice, just like ballplayers the skills…..and they practice, practice and practice some more.

Then, they learn to relax and rely on the habits [some people call this muscle memory but it's not....it's mind memory, which controls the muscle ] they established in practice.

In essence, they are prepared….and trust the skills they establish…..

Network marketing is the exact same thing…..if your going to make some money, you need to learn the skills ……and this isn’t rocket science or like flying a plane…..once you know ‘how’ all people make every decision they make and learn the skill sets to leverage that simple truth, you’re in the ‘zone’ anytime you want to be.  Getting 100s of prospects monthly and getting 80%-90% to instantly say yes….is easy once get into the ‘zone’

There’s an old saying…..if you’re in a hole, stop digging!

We networkers are a passionate but irrational group.   Passion is wonderful but without common sense, it leads to lots of bad decisions.

And networkers make lots of them because our passion is so deep, strong and real.

Now don’t get your undies in a bunch….everywhere you look you see a lack of common sense.

Next time your in a restaurant visit the bathroom….notice where the sign is for ‘employees must wash hands’…..ever notice?

It’s over the sink!  DUH!!

If they can see it they are washing their hands.  It needs to be on the door and in the line of vision when they are relieving themselves.

It’s disheartening to see people pouring money into leads, systems….moving from 1 vendor to the next…….spending more money on leads and systems than product.

What is the core of MLM power?  Word of mouth advertising, the most powerful in the world.

Met a gal last week at a convention in Orlando…..she’s spent close to $3000 in the last 8 months…..on advertising in a ‘word of mouth’ business.  Good grief.

Strong belief, passionate, no quit in this gal.

Asked her one simple question….make that two.

THE TWO QUESTIONS

1. Why are you buying leads and systems to generate leads?

“I’ve exhausted my warm market.”

2. If your friends, relatives and acquaintances didn’t like to hear what you had to say, why do you think strangers will like it any better?

Wide-eye shock.  An ‘aha’ moment, if you will.

10 seconds, no kidding, pass……she says, “I gotta sit down.”

She goes on a little rant, berating herself a tad at first…..then works herself up to a real “How could I be so dumb?” tirade.

Ask her if she ever heard that it’s a good idea to stop digging if you find yourself in a hole.

“That supposed to be funny?” she asks, curtly.  “I’m sorry,” she says….and she means it.

They Are Good At It, Really Good

I tell her I know….but that she has to get over being mad at herself.  I tell her she’s been hustled by the best, it’s what they ‘magic bullet’ sites do…….and, I gotta admit, they are good at it…..at least with passionate. irrational people……and that really does describe us, eh?

The she asked me a great question.  Really.

THE GREAT QUESTION

“How did I get so far off track…..I mean how do those magic systems and sites get people like me so far off track?”

They “get your focus of the main thing,” I tell her.

The main thing is to keep the main thing….because it’s the main thing.   Talking to people, skillfully, about your business who are not in your business.

If we spend 80% of our time we dedicate to our business on the main thing…..instead of leads, systems, compenstation plans, etc……we’ll do just fine as long as we know about the biggest lie in network marketing.

“Which is?” she asks.

“You just have to find the right people.”

“Really?”

What do we really, in the end, offer people?

1. More money
2. More time
3. Lower taxes through the home-based tax benefits.

She agrees.

Think everyone wants those 3 things?

OPEN-MINDEDNESS IS BEAUTIFUL

She agrees.

If everyone wants those 3 things and you are offering them……the question is not how to find the right people……..if people want, most people anyway, those 3 things…..shouldn’t most people say ‘yes’ to looking?

We had a great conversation, shared a couple network marketing skills with her…..she let me know Thursday, 3 days after the event she was attending…..that she had 5 good people in the pipeline and had already sponsored someone.

I asked her why she thought the turn-around was so quick.

No Hocus Pocus, Just Change The Focus

“I’m keeping the main thing the main thing, talking to people about my business.”

See, once we focus on what we are supposed to be doing…..and we ditch the biggest lie in MLM….we improve.

If we take the time to learn some networking skills….and stay focused on the main thing 80% of the time with ourselves and our teams……there is really no limit to how far we can go.

MY LIFE…..JUST KIDDING

There is no question that my first job out of college had a profound effect on me…..I only wish, and I mean really, really wish…I knew what an immense gift I was given.

It was my [unknown] privilege to work for W. Clement Stone.  Stone was Napoleon Hill’s friend and the truth is that it was Stone who really pushed Hill to dramatic wealth.

Stone and Hill wrote a lot of books together and started successful businesses….massive income by helping others…..and it as Stone who drove the deals….not Hill.  Because of the absence of ego, with either, the merging of great minds worked…..and they really, when you get down to it…changed the financial destiny of more people that anyone…….and set an awful lot of today’s self-helper’s up for success…..

Above all there was one thing the great man, Mr. Stone was able to get through this thick and at the time, young, cocky mind…..it did not come into play until much later in life…..but that was me just being difficult…..and not understanding the power…..the incredible power of knowing the difference between accomplishment and achievement…

Let me compress it into 3 minutes for you…..

Yesterday’s post about leaders at lots of companies undermining the objective, duplication, pissed a few folks off…..I guess they didn’t read or hear in the video that it is NOT their intent….and it is because they are trying so hard.

Lighten up leaders…..as my friend Doug likes to say……about Think and Grow Rich……”if you don’t have the time to read the book, read the cover.”

We’re all in this together, looking for solutions……but the truth is as long as we refuse to look at our own behavior, we never be our best.  And different leaders, as we pointed out yesterday, with the same companies….are sending conflicting information…..and prevent themselves and their groups from taking advantage of an uncontrollable compulsion every human being has……And if our passion overrides our common sense…..not only is it an ‘Ut-Oh’ …..we lose our sense of humor to boot.

WHAT’S THE UNCONTROLLABLE COMPULSION?

We All Crave Accecptence Of A Group. Are You and Your Up-team really a group?

When we join a group we will unconsciously copy [re:duplicate] the behavior of the group to gain acceptance.  Conflicting information prevents us from looking like a group, gives new people choices and dismisses this astonishing uncontrollable characteristic that would manifest the objective.

Talk about irony.

Here’s the solution.

Duplication is a network marketing skill, just like getting a ‘yes’ 85% or more of the time is from prospects to look at what you have.

Duplication is a 4 syllable word for copy…..so lighten up, don’t just work together leaders, work in harmony and keep the objective above your ego, experience and desire to be ‘different.  After all, if duplication is the objective, why do you want to be different?

We are a hilarious group of passionate but often irrational and stubborn…..

THERE, I FINALLY SAID IT

Duplication is a network marketing skill, not an accident or an act of God.

Let me be real clear here, no one is trying to ‘prevent’ duplication, no one is evil or bad here.  As a matter of fact, with the leaders, they are trying too hard to help…..so no one get their undies in a bunch.

We live in a ‘blame’ society…..and I hate that.  I mean I really, really hate that when something goes wrong we just have to find someone to blame…..good grief, sometimes things just go wrong……sometimes great quarterbacks throw a bad pass and get intercepted, Gold Glove fielders make errors……..so this is not one of my rants.

Success Coach Kathy Zimmer [just released a great article on blogging BTW] and Social Media guru Doug Karnuth have me on a 12 rant a year limit….so this isn’t one of my 12 this year

After dozens of surveys to 1000s of people and hiring 2 sociologists and 2 psychological behaviorists …..the evidence is clear that since companies have abandon training the field and turned it over to the leaders at their companies…..well intentioned leaders are, in mass, undermining their objective, duplication.

Wednesday I’ll share the solution we found…..the hard way…..and save you lots of time and pain.

Network marketing is like any other business but the obsession people have with thinking and believing it is ‘so different’ blocks most people from learning some simple business concepts and gaining a huge competitive edge.

Think about it for a minute.   Yes, we have a different method of paying people than a traditional job…..yes the home-based business model is different than traditional brick-and-mortar businesses….but it is still business.

And as ‘different’ as we want to believe we are, traditional, successful businesses principles apply.

After all, we are dealing with people and market share.

And what do successful businesses do?

Identify ‘who’ they are marketing to and ‘how’ they can best ‘market’ what they have to offer.

DON’T ASK A NAKED MAN FOR THE SHIRT OFF HIS BACK

In the previous blog we showed the person in MLM and dissatisfied with the results as well as people looking…..are no longer impressed with marketing plans or products.

They survey, over 2500 people, shows that beyond a shadow of a doubt, that today’s candidate clearly understands while the product and plan and company may be great, they fully….and I mean fully…..realize they know that they need to learn ‘how to’ market themselves.

They know this: they know the product and plan won’t market themselves…..they KNOW they need to market themselves and what they have to offer.

So how is this an ‘edge’?

If you know what people really need and want, what the ‘avatar’ is looking for, then it’s easy to address and satisfy their needs and wants.

Today's Candidate Knows They Need Skills & Support

Pitching people on how great the product and plan are…..is, really, like asking a naked man for the shirt off his back.  He’s saying, “I don’t know how to market myself” and most people are telling them the ingredients in the product and why that makes them great……..she’s saying, “I don’t have the skills, will you teach me and support me?” and most people are saying, “we have the best pay-plan in the galaxy!”

ADULTS DON’T WANT TO BE EMBARRASSED OR CRITICIZED

And there it is in a nutshell.

How do I know?

Well, do you want to be embarrassed?

Fail in a business you’re going to talk to your friends and acquaintances about?

No one does.

And while your competitors talk about their plan and product…..you can use the information form these 2 charts to gain a massive advantage.

Again – they know they need to ‘market’ themselves and that is a network marketing skill.

Proof?

So what does this really mean?

It means that you now know what your prospects want.

They want you to teach them the network marketing skills they will need to marketing themselves…..they know, read this carefully….that if they are going to make some money, they need to talk to people.  If you’ll commit to them, teach them the skills and then demonstrate they skills with them until they master them….they will join you.

Why?

Successful businesses find out what their customers need, and reps are your best customers, and then get it to them.  This is marketing 101.  And MLMers who deny standard business principles apply?  Let them be right…..why wake up your competitors?

The really cool thing is that it is the right thing to do anyway.

I LOVE LEVERAGE

So how do you do it?

This is the really extraordinary part.

When talking with prospects I send them The 3-Deep Pattern and always work on the phone with others reps they would be working with.  This offers both the concept of the kind of support they will be getting and proof that we work together….plus it’s more fun anyway.

Wait, it gets better.

More proof today’s prospect knows they need to learn the skills to succeed.

All you have to do is realize the people you are talking to want to hear you make calls so they can learn how.

Remember what the real problem, that you can easily solve, for your prospects is?

They don’t want to be embarrassed or criticized….they know they need to learn the networking skills that will help them market themselves SUCCESSFULLY.  Once they know how and master it, they’ll duplicate.

Put these 2 charts together and what do they say to you?

What they say to me is 99.6% of prospects know they need to learn some skills to succeed and they want to hear the people that enroll them show them ‘how’ not ‘tell’ them how to do it correctly.

How do I do it?

Simple.  I work my list, their list, anyone’s list on a conference call……and I forward the skill ‘What Goes Through The Prospect’s Head‘ to them…..we make the calls with them and let others listen in…..giving me a competitive edge and leverage.  I am building others’ businesses and my own while demonstrating what they are heard in the training, over and over.

Everybody knows that repetition is the mother of skill…..but the cool thing, the leverage….it that I am not taking time out of my business to do it…..I am teaching by building.

MLM is not really different than any other business….it’s just common sense……find out what your potential customer needs, fill that need and do it over and over again.

The edge you have is that most MLMers think that their plan or product is their edge.

You know better.

Do people really believe that ‘hanging in there’ will build their business?

Gimme a break.

Lazy leaders, and there is no other way to describe them,  have been pitching this dribble for decades.   And it is getting worse.

Why?

Even ‘leaders’ have been sucked into this ‘sponsor more’ moronic mentality.

Is it good to sponsor new people?

Of course.  But this nonsense of sponsoring 15, 20 people a month is absurd and defies logic, ethics and understanding of responsibility.

Can I sponsor 10-20 peeps a month?  Sure.

Would I?  No

Have I? Yes.  And I still regret it to this day.

Why?

Simple.  Sponsoring takes time and sponsoring people and ‘plugging them in’ does not work.

It creates the reverse effect that we desire and exacerbates the problem.

Why?

New people need help, guidance and I mean hands on help, not simply sent to a ‘getting started’ website and dropped like a hot potato.

New people need hands on help and the truth is when we sponsor someone it is always the the same trigger, in principle, for the person who trusts you and enrolls with you.

WHY PEOPLE SAY YES

They join because, on some level, they BELIEVE their life can improve and they believe you can show them how.

But since lazy leaders are trapped in sponsoring numbers, they neglect people while, at the same time, make the rest of the team feel inferior because they are not enrolling several people a week.

‘Newbies’ don’t know how to sponsor, they don’t have the networking skills to succeed yet.   Since they don’t and are neglected they quit….leaving uplines only one choice……sponsor more.  Good grief.  And the cycle continues.

When you sponsor someone, make no mistake about it, you’ve rattled their ‘dream chamber’ on some level and they are looking to you…..no some automated training.  While the internet offers great low to zero cost tools to assist, and that is the word, assist….it is by no means an end to your responsibility.  Yet people who are making a few bucks continue to post training after training to gain leverage – you know, conference calls, team sites etc., thinking technology can do their job for them.

The work begins after they enroll

Lazy.  Pathetic.  And that’s OK.  What’s not OK is that it is ethically wrong.

When you or I sponsor someone based on the direct or implied promise that their life will improve we have a moral obligation to render more support than is required.

New people, the life blood of your business, with proper coaching, need to learn some skills and need hands on support…..and that means working with them…..not managing them through technology…..if you give it they stick longer, do more and produce more.

In each blessing and success we’ve had in 20 years, we’ve sponsored less people each time and been more successful faster.

Why?

We’ve got a huge advantage.  We are operating as if it were 2012, not 1980.

Huh?

We’ve mined data that clearly shows people are not impressed with pay-plans or products.  The days of people being blown away by some wonderful product or cool wrinkle in the pay-plan ended by the late ’90′s or early 2000′s.  Huge advantage.

Folks, people KNOW they need to learn to market themselves and the plan and product, as great as they may be, will not build their business.  They know they need to learn how to do it and here are 2 graphs, mined from over 2500 networkers that prove that point.

Holy crap, does this give you an edge or what?  I mean really, don’t you agree?  While everyone else is out beating the drums about how great their plan, product and system is…..we’re talking to them about learning skills and teaching them the skills, hands on.

Duplication is a by-product of education.

Educate, demonstrate, duplicate.

Educate them with the skills.  Then demonstrate by working with them, hands on.  Duplication follows.

What you don’t see on that chart is the rest of the sentence under the green….the rest of the sentence is “and an upline that will work the skills with me.”

What does this really mean?

It means that all the motivational crap about ‘not quitting’ and ‘hang in there’ and the totally stupid, ‘people won’t fail if they won’t quit’…..are really lazy, knowledgeable people thinking it’s still the 1980s!  People know they need to learn some skills and want support.

The person looking today does not need these mantras….winning never had a thing to do with not quitting….not quitting only means not quitting…..winning is another deal altogether.

How can you win?  Learn the skills, master the skills and teach the skills hands on.

The success of the Go90Grow members is not an accident, they invested their time to learn the network marketing skills and how to be a better coach…..so they could teach better. Duh?

Why did they do so amazingly well?

Simple.

Keep your promise of improving a life with hands on support

They spoke to prospects based on this chart….they talked to people in teams, assuring people they would teach them the skills and then work with them until they hit their goals.  They, in essence, respected themselves, the promise they made of helping people have a better life and they respected the people that enrolled…..working with them, demonstrating how to do it.

The ‘don’t quit’ group seems to still believe their plan and product makes a difference…..and is enough.

It never was and it never will be.

Shhhhh! Don’t tell them….let them be right…..because as long as they think they don’t have to actually work with people and just sponsor more…..they neuter themselves competitively.  And that gives people like you, who understand it is educate, demonstrate, duplicate, a MASSIVE competitive advantage.

Successful people, in any venture, always look for the ‘competive edge’ that is the right thing to do.  Promising someone a ‘better life’ and teaching them what to do and how to do it is not only the competitive edge you need, it’s the right thing to do.  A no brainer.

But not enough…..and not fast enough.

What are MLMer’s getting?

That there is no ‘magic automated system’ that will let someone ‘point and click’ their way to success.

Good friend, social media expert and successful MLMer Doug Karnuth wrote a great post Jan. 19 about the bottom feeding gurus trying to fleece inexperienced MLMers….and drew a very funny yet accurate analogy.

There are no secrets and there are no magic point and click systems.

Guru’s that tell you that have magic systems that will generate prospects and solve all your problems are lying.

And they are good at it for you don’t know the truth.

I know why Doug has a thriving business.  He know the truth about what it takes.

He knows what most people forgot.

Maybe it’s because he’s from the Midwest….maybe it’s because he utilizes and listens to our friend and peer Success Coach Kathy Zimmer ……who, despite living in Southern California…..[I was born in LA so don't get your undies in a bunch]…..seems to know what it really takes to succeed.

Why is it easy for successful MLMers like Kathy and Doug?

What truth is it that they and other authentic successful MLMer’s  know?

They know about the 2 ‘SPIRATIONS‘

Really simple.

It’s simply not enough to know about network marketing skills…..the real winners know they’ve got to learn, practice and apply.

You’ll find lots of networking skills, free and lot’s of networking tips too…..but does it really matter without the 2 SPIRATIONS?

Get busy because if you do, no one….and I mean NO ONE will ever be able to fool you or hold you back, including yourself…from authentic success.

On the 11th day of Christmas…..we get a gift from outside MLM that applies.

Heard a great message by Frank Kern, internet marketing guru, about the ‘state of internet marketing‘ moving forward.

Frank is successful, authentically….and, my bride, The Fabulous Davene has gleaned a ton from Frank, more than enough to make six figures++ in her first year as an online marketer……she’s past that now.   Hey, I married up, what can I say?

Kern breaks internet marketing down into 3 pillars, just like I’ve always broken MLM down.

And no, I’m not talking about the ‘stupid’ pillars people tell you about when they pitch you…..ya know what I mean?

When someone tells you the 4 KEY pillars for picking the right company…..or the 5 KEY pillars…..you can bet all the tea in China then next thing they are going to tell you is how the deal they want to pitch hits and exceeds all of them…..very cute technique……it’s bullshit but it’s very effective if you go down that road with them.

I’m talking about something completely different – the 3 things we do to drive our business.

And it’s a lot different than it was in 1995.  In some ways better and in some ways….especially today…it brings an inherent trap with it.

Unfortunately, [or fortunately if you want your competition wasting their time ], most people are spending most of their time on the thing that matters least and the least amount of their time on what matters most to build a big, self-perpetuating business.

To KILL 2012 and get where you want to be……requires nothing more than looking at the FACTS and seeing how you’ve been sucked into what everyone else, well most everyone else, is focusing on.

Here are the 3 pillars and why you probably need to shift your focus.

If we re-examine our focus and embrace the brutal facts of what all this technology has brought us……it’s clear that with a clear focus on what actually drives the economic engine and some skills to improve in that pillar, we can all up the ante in 2102 with ease.

If we are going to make some money, we need to talk to people.  Talking to people is a skill and there are several networking skills free right here.

Then we need to educate them so we can get the desired effect, duplication.  And everybody knows getting duplication is a network marketing skill.
