MOMS and Networkers

Mom doesn’t know anything about Network Marketing ……I think when she asks me how my business is going.

I think she doesn’t understand it …..maybe it’s me that doesn’t understand.

MOM taught me everything I needed to know to build a network marketing business, she gave me network marketing skills.

MOM

Mother’s Day.  Don’t we all feel like we should do a little more all year for Mom?

Would it really kill us to go to Mom’s house and leave the cell phone in the car, have a cup of coffee and just be ‘present’?

Can’t make up for the past, you know, all those times we’re a ‘little to busy’ to just visit?

She was never too busy for me.

NETWORKERS

Don’t we all feel like we like we could all do a little more recruiting?

Would it really kill us to sit at our desk an hour a night and dial the phone and be ‘present’?

Can’t make up for the past, you know, all those times we were making ourselves ‘little to busy’ to just dial?

Why are we always too busy to actually do the business?

MOMS

Speaking to an auidence of 10,000

She encouraged me to dream.

She knew my dreams and encouraged them and me.

She asked me about them.

She found places, like where to get me signed up for Little League, and got me there.  So many countless things.

NETWORKERS

We encourage others to dream.

We tell them they have to have a ‘why’

Tell them to write it down.

Do we know their dreams like Mom knew ours?

Do we find articles, pictures and events that support them?

After they do write it down, do we ever, like Mom, ask them about it again?

MOMS

Mom was a hands-on-teacher.  Not a school teacher.

She was patient.  Persistent.  Insistent.

She never quit when I struggled.  Never.

Yeah, she made me read the directions, sit there while I read them…..and answered a lot of the same questions over and over.

Asked me if I understood them and then she showed me how to do things right….no matter how many times it took.

She taught me skills.

NETWORKERS

Am I a hands on teacher or do I just ‘plug’ them in?

Do I quit on them when they struggle and rationalize it as ‘they don’t want it bad enough’?

Do I make sure they get the directions and make sure they understand them?

Could I be a lot more patient when I have a rep on the phone and they are not ‘up to speed’?

Am I as willing to answer the same questions over and over?

Do I teach skills or just keep selling the dream?

MOMS

Mom never quit setting an example of excellence, even when people were not looking.

Never.

She never asked me to do anything she was not doing herself.

She was never a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ Mom.

She never quit on me.

NETWORKING

Do I set an example of excellence?

…..even when others are not looking?

Do I dog it and tell others what to do even though I am not doing it myself?

Am I a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ managing MLMer?

Do I quit on myself and others with the lie that tomorrow I will double up?

MOMS

My Mom

My Mom had to quit school and take care of her brothers and sisters when her Mom died.

Got her GED in her 50s.

Went to college, studied hard and graduated with highest honors in her 60s.

She was excused from her finals her last year.

Took them anyway, wanted to test herself.

All A’s, of course.

She knew she’d Ace the tests.

Always prepared.  Well in advance.

Pride.

NETWORKERS

Am I staying a student, continuing grow as a person and learn about people and my trade?

Or am I surfing the web for short cuts?

Do I have pride in my profession and performance or do I look for the easier, softer way and pretend I am ‘working smarter, not harder?’

Am I ready for the daily test of growing a business?

Am I prepared to succeed to the point that I know that I will?

MOMS

Manners.

Please and thank you, no elbows the table.

Listen first. Ask for permission to speak, don’t take it.

Respect their needs, forget your wants.

Never talk about people that are not present.

It’s OK to disagree but don’t be disagreeable.

Honesty is the greatest of all manners.

NETWORKERS

Do I have manners?

Do I belittle people mentally or with other reps who do not join?

Do I tell people why I am calling or ‘pretend to be their friend’ so I can use their words against them later to look?

Do I ask if it is OK to tell them about my business?

Am I focused on their needs or just trying to scare them about the future?

Do I listen? Do I take a ‘no’ as graciously as a ‘yes’?

Am I honest?

MOMS

She never hesitated to go the extra mile for us.

Never stopped looking for the extra mile.

NETWORKERS

We have a chance to do this for others everyday AND get paid for it.

Do we look for it?  Take it?

MOMS

Mom Hiking in Kauai at 89 years-old

My Mom is 89, legally blind and needs help.

Told her she has 2 choices.

Assisted living or move 6000 miles from Massachusetts to Kauai, HI and live with us.

She’s was living in the town she was born in.

Mom says she’s scared.  Says she’s used to where she lives.  Knows where everything is and it’s comforting.

She packed and she’s here in Kauai.

Courage.  Mom’s have courage.

Picking up the phone takes some courage.  At least we like to pretend it does.
 Not as much as moving 6000 miles to a place you’ve never been to at 89 and blind.

Do I lack courage or am I just lazy?  Mom’s are not lazy.

Rejection? Mom never accepted any obstacle as a reason to let fear determine her life.

Santa Januszewski will be 89 on October 12, 2010.  
Columbus Day. How appropriate. 
 She still has the guts to explore.

Networking allowed me to step up and doing something special for myself and our Mom.

I wonder how much sooner great things would have happened in the lives of others if I had not made the mistake of thinking Mom knew nothing about Network Marketing?

Like a little boy, I foolishly thought my business was so different that she’d never understand it,

Turns out she knew everything IMPORTANT about it before I was born.

UPDATE…..2012.  Mom’s up in New England now, turned 90, still checking up to make sure I’m doing the right things and brushing my teeth….

Hoping she’ll be back in a few months…..

Kauai Family Picture

In part 3 of Giraffe Philosophy is the most difficult.

Oh, it’s not hard to do.  It’s hard to be honest enough to do it.

Ethics and not stealing? No, not what I am talking about here…..

It’s that difficulty we all have in facing the truth about ourselves.

In English?

Excuses.  We make excuses and we’ve got brilliant, undeniable reasoning to back those excuses up.

Deal with this FACT…..first.

FACT: All of us……and I mean every single one of us has been doing network marketing since we were 6 years old.

If you’ve got or had kids…..think back to when they were 6 or 7…..in the first or second grade.

They come home from time to time and tell you about a new pizza shop, ice cream joint or a new game…..whatever.  Always something.

Sometimes you bring them one of those places….or buy them the ‘thing’ they told you about.

Where did they get that information?

From their friends.  Right?

That conversation they had at recess or lunch was another kid telling them about something they like, enjoyed and/or thought your son or daughter would enjoy.  Right?

And it triggered a ‘sale’…….folks, that is network marketing.

And….you did it when you were a kid too.

It’s part of the human experience to share things we like or enjoy with others……

So how can something we’ve doing since we were 6 years old be so difficult?

Limiting beliefs.

We all have an astonishing ability to turn excuses into a ‘story’ that is rational and reasonable.

We repeat the ‘story’ so many times we believe it.

What do we do about it?

 

ACTION STEP

G – Give 100% to the dreams of others

I – Imagination, live from your imagination

R- Release all limiting beliefs.

All designed to help you help others turn the word “Impossible” into ‘ I’m Possible‘

So now you’ve got the 3rd part of the G-I-R-A-F-F-E philosophy…..that will do 2 great things for you.

1. Let you live your MLM experience with AND on purpose
2. Develop your highest self including your potential.

But just like ‘faith without works is dead‘ the same can be said about a philosophy.

If we don’t work it, put the concepts in play…..it’s just interesting bullshit at a party or other gathering.

Now we get to the hard part, getting honest and exposing ‘your story’ as just another excuse…….

5 kids?  People make it with 6 kids.

Un-supportive spouse? No one believes folks, join the club.

The list is endless.

Some stay loyal to their story, known as ‘affirmational bias’ …..and others over come their story.

Which one are you?

Look at this list from Think and Grow Rich and take your inventory….then have someone who will honest with you review the list with you.

The best way to improve the team is to improve ourselves…..but we all need a little help from our friends so we can shatter the ‘excuses story’ …..and release false or limiting beliefs.

Get A Friend to Help Find Blind Spots & Limiting Beliefs

KEY: believe them, not yourself if they point out blind spots.

Next, do what I suggested in the video.

Go ahead……stick your neck out, like our giraffe.  It’s why I picked the giraffe.

Next, ask here ……in the comments or work with your Up-team [so much nicer that 'upline'] and find solutions to your, ahem, story about your limiting beliefs.

Let them go.

You get this right and the first 2 letters, Give and Imagine……and couple them with the simple network marketing skills and you’ll quickly be flabbergasted at the results.

And you’ll wonder how the hell you created those limits in the first place.  Fantastic.

This is the second piece of the philosophy, based on Think and Grow Rich and adapted for MLMers…….that create purpose, the purpose, behind all our efforts.

A word here about ‘efforts’.

The effort, or price I talked about paying, is the discipline to not just talk this mindset or philosophy but to walk it.

If you embrace and immerse yourself in it, building an MLM, big, fast and strong is virtually effortless.

Once we understand that if we don’t stand for something, we’ll fall for anything, [like magic systems, secrets, private coaching, social media systems] and spend out money foolishly……get hurt, bitter and busted.

It’s the G-I-R-A-F-F-E philosophy……that turns us from reactionary fear driven victims into fearless victors.

And you are……so am I and so is every person you know…..we are all infinite fields of possibilities and exude pure potentiality ……and when we become this, by standing for something…..we subconsciously give everyone we come in contact with permission to think, believe, act and manifest in terms of ‘possible’ ….. we first give ourselves permission to think “I’m possible” instead of ‘impossible’ and others follow this fearlessness.  It’s extraordinary.

How do you do that?

Constantly imagine the life you want, the person you want to be…..build a clear mental picture of that person.

See, most of us are not ‘all in’ ……we are waiting for results before we throw our heart into it.

I mean you don’t see GIRAFFES hanging out with LIONS …..or LIONS hanging out with FISH.  Nature always wins….and I spent a lot if time attracting unskilled, self-doubting procrastinators…..BTW…..don’t ever pay a dime for any information about ‘attraction marketing’ ……PUH-leeze!

A core philosophy that declares who you are and what you stand for……and the network marketing skills to manifest what you imagine.

• No Way
• Retreat
• Failure
• No time

Is it impossible?

I mean really…….does anyone believe they can make money in MLM that is significant?

Surely, if you’ve talked to a couple dozen friends and relatives MLM is ‘impossible.’

And with all the blood sucking con artists peddling their “MLM doesn’t work but my shit does” crap…..MLM success is ‘impossible’

And, if you’re anything like most people, and I’m like most people, we talk ‘strong’ about what we are ‘gonna do’ and ‘hitting the top of the pay-plan’ but we have our doubts.

I remember sitting on the couch at 3:oo AM more that once or twice thinking, “Who am I kidding?”

That was back in 1994, my daughter was 8 years old at the time…..you know, that age where they love you reading them stories and you love it to because what your reading is far more interesting than reading the same book over and over.

Reading Alice in Wonderland to her this one night, one of my favorites by the way…..I read these 2 sentences and stop.

Chelsea, all grown up now, says to me “Dad!  Keep reading!”

I do but I can’t get them out of my head.

Once I’m done reading……I go sit on the porch and reflect.

• ALICE: This is impossible
• MAD HATTER: Only if you think it is

MOTIVATIONAL NONSENSE

I know that motivational stuff doesn’t work…….it’s really like a warm bath, isn’t it?

20 minutes later we're sitting in cold, dirty water

I mean really…..all those quotes and slogans……they sound great and we do the little ‘Aha’ thing, hoping it’s going to stick with us and change us and change our performance…..it never does which is my ‘warm bath’ analogy.

Warm baths feel great when you first get in but soon you realize your sitting in cold, dirty water.

So I keep thinking about this word impossible because MLM success was eluding me……and I realized, without question determination, motivation, drive and all those other ‘blah-blah-blah’ things don’t make a difference.

What would?

Philosophy.

The word philosophy pops into my head.

BIRTHPLACE OF AN IDEA

I couldn’t shake this idea.

I needed a philosophy.

Converting the idea to action

My personal philosophy.

And develop and construct a  plan based on that solely philosophy.

Let me define what that really means.

It’s not a bunch of great sounding thoughts so we can sound smart at a party or coffee shop.

It’s a concept or idea that I would live by, no matter what.

And I knew it had to address the word ‘impossible’ from an entirely different angle.

I mean the Mad Hatter’s statement is correct but let’s be honest……while true, it one of those statements that sounds great but changes nothing.

I had to change…..found a different way to look at the word ‘impossible’ and then turned that in a philosophy.

I’m sharing this because someone I have tremendous respect for $17 Million Dollar MLM earner Jerry Campisi.……and in a recent conversation I shared this simple, short 7 point philosophy with him I had developed ….. I didn’t think much of it but he went on and on about how much sense it made.

It all started by uncovering, that night, another way to look at impossible.

Over the next 7 posts, I’ll spell out that philosophy and would really like to know how you feel about it.

I believe if you adopt in and live by it you’ll find it will make a significant difference with you……and……as a result of that, in your business.

Now before we get started I have to tell you it is not free.  Oh, there’s no financial cost…..but there is a price to pay.

See, you’ve got to do the 7 things 100% of the time…..not when it’s easy or convenient.

And, the truth about all of us is the same……if we don’t stand for something, we’ll fall for anything.

But, as the old saying goes…..’if we don’t pay the price for success now, we certainly must pay the price of failure later’

When you combine this philosophy with a couple of network marketing skills ………you’ll feel the same way about the word ‘impossible’ as I do.  And, you’ll love it.

Let’s get to ‘impossible’ and the birthplace of an idea.

I am trying to tell you that simple common sense is the key to the vault in MLM?

I’m saying without it we’ll never find the keys to the vault, let alone the vault.

For some reason, and it was the case with me during my failures in MLM during the 80′s, we believe that……. because we believe…….we’ll make a lot of money.

We let our enthusiastic belief short-circuit our common sense.

Twain wrote, “Common sense isn’t so common.”

He was right……and even righter when it comes to us MLMers.

We are a passionate but often irrational group, eh?

PASSION

Without passion, what is their in life?

Passion is wonderful, magnificent and without passion…..are we really alive?

Sure, we might be breathing, eating and sleeping……but no one will deny that those ‘painting-by-the-numbers’, while technically alive…..lack the vitality that makes us ‘sparkle.’

MLMer's live with passion, none of us are painting our lives 'by the numbers'

MLMer’s sparkle…..it’s that great passion we have that makes us feel alive within the experience of life instead of reactor’s to life.

We LOVE our products…..we love our leaders, pay-plans and companies.

Others’, those ‘painting-by-the-numbers’ types…..think we are nuts.

We think they are nuts!

It’s wonderful….but…..

But……we need to be careful that this kinetic passion doesn’t stripe us of our common sense.

IT’S A BUSINESS

Winners channel that passion into a great work ethic and manifest dreams for themselves and others.

Non-winners in the MLM game…..tend have their dreams linked to their passion…..and without results, the passion fades and the dreams die with the passion.

What is the difference?

Common sense.

It’s a business….and winners realize this.  They ‘balance’ their passion for what they are doing with this simple common sense fact –> It’s business, just like any other business.

While the non-winners believe passion is enough……believing is enough…..commitment is enough……and NEVER really follow the most simple of all business principles……winners do just the opposite.

They use common sense……to identify a key business principle and turn their passion towards that so they can turn their MLM opportunity into the vehicle that will manifest their dreams…..and, more importantly the dreams of others.

Let’s face it….if we can help 2-4 people get what they want, we’ll get far more than we could ever need or imagine.

See if this makes  sense to you…..like it does to most people who are cashing big checks.

We’re an odd lot, eh?

We’re as bad and great and wonderful and crazy as we could possibly be.

As distributors we are so committed, so passionate…..so convinced about the business model that we even don’t want to ask this question ourselves…..

But we are dying to hear the answer.

It’s like the elephant in the living room that nobody wants to talk about but…..is dying to get it ‘resolved’

2 simple things you can already do to set you apart from your history, doubt and fear?

#1 Make a decision.

I’m not talking about stating a preference………Most people, particularly Americans, are GREAT at stating preferences and convincing ourselves we’ve made a decision.

It’s not important ….. it is a requirement to succeed, to take advantage of a really simple and easy business.

Easy?

I know, you don’t really believe that, right?

Indecision is the only thing that makes MLM hard

I promise you that once one makes an authentic decision, network marketing is easy.

Why do I believe that?

We all…..and I really do mean all…….we all have been doing network marketing since we’ve been 5 or 6 years old.

You got information from friends at school, right?  About a new pizza place, a dance, a new game, Little League tryouts…..and you went home and told your folks……and your friends.

They bought you the game….or took you to tryouts, no matter.  Folks, that is network marketing.   Telling people about things we like or enjoy is part of the human experience ……we love telling others about things we’ve done, discovered, enjoyed and we really, really like telling others about things we think they will enjoy or benefit from.

Cool…….easy……and you already have 15 to 50 years experience.

But…..it starts with a decision.  Here is what changed things for me…..and for 100s of 1ooos of people.  And it’s free; from Napoleon Hill.

#2 Specialized Knowledge

We want shortcuts…..secrets…..we really want something for nothing……we all want to believe there is something in the Social Media/Tech-no world that will do the work for us.

We lose our common sense.

If we are going to make some money, we need to learn some skills, specialized skills, network marketing skills.

On this there can be no mistake and it is exactly the same in every single venture…..

EVERYBODY KNOWS

People who don’t invest in themselves that do not have the skills to successfully run any business, and network marketing is a business…..are doomed.

Every once in a while I just gotta get this off my chest.  No, it’s not a rant…….Success Coach Kathy Zimmer only permits me 4 rants a year and I’ve already used one.   Says a good one once in a while is OK but since my life is like a fairy tale to begin with she’d rather see me sharing ideas and skills that help people grow instead of getting them all riled up.

Folks there is no secret to building a big group…..that’s the secret the salespeople don’t want you to know.

There are just a couple of common sense things we need to know, beginning with the name of our industry.

Unfortunately, as Mark Twain wrote, “Common sense isn’t so common.”

We’ll get to the common sense stuff in a minute.

HOBBY-BUSINESS, BUSINESS-HOBBY

If you want to build a big network marketing business, start by really, really hearing AND observing people who chant, “If you treat it like a hobby, it will pay you like a hobby.  If you treat it like a business, it will pay you like a business.”

Makes a lot of sense but in 20+ years I have seen less than a handful actually treat it like a business……most people don’t follow sound business principles…..only when it’s convenient or to try and ‘prod’ you to do more.

All well run, flourishing businesses develop new people they hire who can impact the bottom line.

Smart Business? Teach newbies how

When someone sponsors you into the business …….if they were ‘treating it like a business’ they would work with you, daily, to help learn what to do, what to say…..do you think Honda or Toyota or Mutual of New York hires people and sends them a link……and then tell new people to ‘go get ‘em’?   Hardly.  Successful business owners know the people who are going to ‘DRIVE’ income don’t know what to do when they hire them.

Most MLMer’s do exactly that…..

Why?

They have to ‘sponsor more’ ……I wrote about that a few days ago…….

Why to they have to sponsor more?

Very few produce.

Why?

No one shows them the skills new network marketers need to learn.

Why?

It’s what they were taught.

Are they bad people?  Hell no…..just stuck in a ‘hire ‘em in masses, train ‘em in classes and throw ‘em out on their asses’ mindset.

And it goes on and on this way…..until a real business person……someone who hasn’t convinced themselves that ‘network marketing is different’ …..people like Rob and Doug.

You treat those people AS IF you personally sponsored them.

You help them sponsor a few folks AND treat those people as if you personally sponsored them.

They won't figure it out without our help

Let’s say you sponsored Jack and helped him sponsor Moe, Larry and Curly.

There is a LOT MORE MONEY in helping Moe, Larry and Curly than sponsoring new people.

Why?

Simple.

Jack is on the phone with you when you get them started right…..Jack does not know how!!

Now Jack has been through getting people started right …..5-10 times…..and learns exactly what to do, why to do it that way and HOW to do it right.

Jack learns, with no pressure to ‘copy, [duplication is just a 4 syllabyle word for 'copy'], the right things.

Folks, this is network marketing.

It seems like more work….but as you repeat the pattern with Moe, Larry and Curly’s people…..you’ve now got 8-12 people who are doing the right things right…..and they start doing them deeper in the group.

Talked with Rob today….his Mom just passed the day before.  Robs cranking about $5000 a week.

Rob’s got common sense…..business sense……so he also took Doug’s advice.

SOCIAL MEDIA & COMMON SENSE

Doug Karnuth is a social media expert.  Really.

He’s helped us…..and so we asked him to join the staff at Go90Grow.

Doug says all the time that social media won’t build your MLM and the only people that will tell you that are people who want to sell you something.

He tells people like Rob and I the truth…..with work, consistent work……you can, in a few months, about 6, really seem some positive results…..and we’ve seen fantastic results.

Why?

“We shouldn’t think about where social media is taking us, we should be thinking about where we want social media to take us.”

WOW.

Game changer…..and, common sense.

Look, if you were in my downline and I had this ‘secret way’ to get lots of prospects who were ready to buy and ready to join via social media…..would you want me to put you in competition with everyone in the company and with everyone with every company?

If I sold this ‘secret’ wouldn’t you be pissed?

I sure would….if you were my upline.

Folks….it’s bullshit.  There is no shortcut to success.

Common sense #1 – It’s network marketing……not net-point and click- marketing

Common sense #2 – People who just joined you have somewhere between 300-1500 new, fresh, exclusive leads.  Work those names with them, teaching them what to do, helping them earn while they learn.

Common sense # 3 – Those people lead to other, new, fresh lists….owned by people who want to make money and don’t know how to work their list……

Common sense # 4 – All those ‘leads’ are free.

It’s simple……network marketing [common sense #5], is networking through the people you bring in…..by definition.

Common Sense # 6 – If we are going to make some money, in any new venture, we need to learn some skills.

Sorry folks…..blasting links all over Wastebook, er….Facebook…..and buying systems to get leads……and all that jazz…….still leaves you in the same spot, with a lighter wallet……you still have to talk to them and that is network marketing skill #1 …..talking to people effectively.

Do things get slower in the summer?

Yes.

Can you build a big business during the summer?

Yes.

Huh?

How can I say things slow down in the summer and you can build big?

Common sense.  Well, common sense and organized planning.

Those two things led to the biggest months I’ve ever had in MLM.  But it’s even bigger.

Everybody says the fall is a great building time….so …..if you have a big summer and have momentum coming into what most people believe is a ‘good building time’ you just get that much bigger.

PLANNING

We’ve got to understand that MLMer’s are prone to ‘convenient’ thinking……we tend to rationalize our sloth…..and contradict ourselves if we are not careful.

What does virtually every MLMer say?   If you treat it like a hobby it will pay you like a hobby.  If you treat it like a business, it will pay you like a business.

Here comes the ‘contradiction’ of convenience.   We no sooner get done saying ‘if you treat it like a business…‘ then say our business is not like other businesses….and that is always followed with some convoluted reasoning as to why making calls in the future is a good move.  Good Grief.  Talk about wanting it both ways.

Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail

What do restaurants do with the same challenges?  The good ones, that is.

Plan ahead.

During holidays restaurants don’t need to push, at other times they do.  Most good restaurant owners, all good business owners for that matter, understand business planning.

PERFECT PLANNING

Good planner know the difference between strategy and tactics…..so they hit their objectives.  They use common sense, understand their competition and leverage information, not commonly held beliefs to construct rock solid business plans that give them momentum coming into easier times…….they don’t wait for the seasons to change…..they are running a successful business.

What does that mean?

It means they define the ‘alleged’ slower times instead of letting the ‘alleged’ slower times define them.

COMMON SENSE

Let’s say Al believes summer is slow……so he slows down……so will Harry’s group.

Nancy, on the other hand…..decides she’s not buying in [you'll learn why you shouldn't buy in by viewing the short video below]…..and builds during the summer.

So Al believes things pick up in mid September…….what does Al have to do in mid September?

Get his group and himself going again.  It will take at least 3-4 weeks to get rolling again.

Nancy hits September 15th with a white-hot team…..and things get even easier.

Nancy has built a 10 week head start on Al……that he will never be able to close up.

And the same sin will be committed by Al and his team again at Holiday season….falling another 10 weeks behind…….

Wait, it’s worse for Al……he’ll repeat that every year…….2x a year he gives one of his competitors 10 weeks.

IT’S BIGGER THAN YOU CAN THINK

There are 1000 Al’s to every 20 Nancy’s.

Nancy not only kicks butt in the summer……she hasn’t had to DO ANYTHING to eliminate 98% of her competition.

How much easier would it be for you if 98% of your competition vanished…….and they do 2x a year…..December and Summer…
