If you are not familiar with Amazon MP3, it sells music without Digital Rights Management (DRM) making it easy for you to move the songs you’ve purchased to your various players and systems. I’m happy to announce the release of my album electronica album REBOOT. The album is being distributed digitally and is available as an immediate digital download via my online store at http://markmosher.bandcamp.com.

The album is currently being offered using the “pay what you will” model. Although the suggested pricing is $6 for the 7 song album + digital booklet and $1 for singles, you  can name their own price including specifying $0 for free downloads. There are future plans to make the album available on iTunes and Amzon’s MP3 store.

For those who are new to this site I’ve included a small summary of the project below:

Two years in the making, REBOOT is an album containing 7 richly layered electronica songs that blend contemporary synthesizer sounds with classical music motifs. The end result is dark electronica for those who love synth "ear candy" with a “dirty” industrial edge.

While the songs on REBOOT stand alone as singles, the collection is an album in the true sense of the word. They share a common palette and when played in sequence conjure an epic and dynamic story for the listener.

Prior to the release of the album, the first three tracks were released as singles. "Midnight" and "Stealth" went to #1 and "They Walk Among Us" went to #2 on the Soundclick.com electronica charts.

I composed a new song last night. That makes 4 songs that are in mixdown and will be added to the Reboot EP. Composing and album serially over a few year period has been very interesting for me as each song influences the next in unexpected ways. As a result the EP has a definite sequence and story and palette that is sustained over all the tracks. I will be uploading all tracks for free download for personal use as usual but I may wait and upload them all at once. We’ll see.

I’ve also started work on putting together a live show to perform these songs in 2010. After doing the vocoding demo for the Ableton User’s group using nothing but my laptop and a few controllers (one trip from the car), it’s clear that I have more than enough horsepower to play virtual synths live along with sequenced elements coming from Live using nothing but  laptop. I’m having a lot of fun thinking about ways to connect with an audience so I’m not simply hunched over a laptop. More on this later.

Speaking of vocoding, on one of the new tracks, I’m using vocoding on drum tracks rather than voice. It sounds very cool.

Since this is Denver / Colorado meet up number one for Ableton the focus is on community.  Who else is using, teaching, or looking to Ableton will be the theme. Both of our presenters, Mark Mosher and Chris Lawhead, are teachers and performers.

Mark Mosher of Modulate This! has 2 decades of experience in synthesis, programming, MIDI, and sampling.  His site Modulate This! has been providing information and tutorials for over 4 years now and he is an excellent resource for Ableton and electronic music in general.  You can check out some great Ableton instruction on his YouTube channel.

Chris Lawhead is a teacher and performer in the Denver Colorado area.  Last summer he rebuilt his rig and went on tour across the country.  This recent experience as a solo artist using Ableton is an important accomplishment of this skilled multi-instrumentalist, band leader, teacher, producer, and professional musician.  For more information on Chris go to his site at http://lawheadmusic.com/

The Walnut Room was built for sonic perfection.  From the ground up they invested time and money in the room.  With a maximum capacity around 200 people or seating room for 100 the Walnut Room is absolutely one of the premier venues in Colorado. It's been a great week and I've been able to dedicate a lot of time to composition. I have two songs that are almost complete and a third about half-way there. All of the songs are ending up "bigger" than I thouhght initially and have a lot of interesting layers - which of course means they are a bit time consuming to produce and mix. I've been playing rough cuts in my car as I drive about and I'm getting excited about getting these songs online so you can enjoy them as well.

In the last few weeks I’ve been experimenting with a very interesting software synthesizer called Synplant. Checkout the description from the marketing blurb - “Instead of creating patches the conventional way by turning dials and knobs, Synplant lets you explore a world of organic sounds by planting seeds that grow into synth patches.”

It’s quite fantastic really and I’ve already have 1st draft compositions of two new tracks using multiple instances of Synplant along with my usual pallet of sounds.

I’m hoping to get at least one of the tracks uploaded for your listening pleasure sometime in September.

APC40 

The APC40 allows me to control Ableton Live (my music production software) without having to use a mouse. This means I can compose and mix faster. It’s also a great way to control live performances. I’ve started experimenting with performance versions of some of the singles off of Reboot.

I posted “They Walk Among us” on SoundClick last Saturday. I’m very excited to report that only 4 days later on May 13th, 2009 the song hit the top of the charts:

• #2 on the overall Electronica chart out of 260,278 songs
• #1 in Electronica>Electronica SubGenre out of 43,850 songs
