Super Lawyers

The annual release of Illinois Super Lawyers included two dozen Arnstein & Lehr attorneys. The list of attorneys honored for 2012 included 23 partners from Arnstein & Lehr’s Chicago office.

In addition, three Chicago attorneys were recently recognized as Rising Stars by the publication. They are Adam S. Fayne, Laura Lau Marinelli and Toby Eveland. Rising Stars are recognized as the top up-and-coming attorneys in the state — those who are 40 years old or younger, or who have been practicing for 10 years or less.

Chicago Partner Mark A. Spognardi spoke at the ICPAS event, “Employment Issues,” on Tuesday, December 13. During his presentation, “Minimizing Risks and Liabilities in Layoffs and Reductions in Force,” Mr. Spognardi discussed various employment labor issues and how they affect businesses today. He also covered the American Recovery & Reinvestment Tax Act, issues that exist with terminating high-level executives and potential employment laws that are currently in the works.

Chicago Partner Mark A. Spognardi was recently elected 2012 program director of the North American Transportation Employee Relations Association, a national association established to provide a forum for the creation, exchange and dissemination of ideas and information concerning human resources and labor relations matters, issues, regulations, legislation and current laws.

Arnstein & Lehr Partner Mark Spognardi recently wrote the article, “Employers’ Summer of Disconnect: Obama Labor Board pushes anti-employer agenda,” which appeared in the September 20 issue of the Westlaw Journal. In the article Mr. Spognardi discusses how the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has had a busy summer proposing and implementing rules and issuing decisions designed to promote the unionization of America’s workforce.

In the article, Mr. Spognardi states that the board has issued a final regulatory rule requiring employers to notify employees of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act. He comments that the Obama NLRB has been “delivering victories to organized labor at a time when the public sentiment toward unions has become, at best, distrustful and at worst, disdainful.”

Chicago Partner Mark Spognardi is the planning chair for tomorrow’s ALI-ABA teleseminar Wal-Mart Stores v. Dukes: Lessons and Insights for the Employment Lawyer. The one-hour seminar scheduled for 12 p.m. CST is geared to employment lawyers and will evaluate the sexual discrimination lawsuit, which was the largest civil rights class action suit in United States history. It charged Wal-Mart with discriminating against women in promotions, pay, and job assignments in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  On June 20 the Supreme Court ruled in Wal-Mart’s favor on class action certification, saying the plaintiffs did not have enough in common to constitute a class.  To register or learn more, please click here.

Chicago Partner Mark Spognardi was interviewed for the article, “SEC Whistleblower Rules and Recent Case Stress Supervisor Education,” which appeared June 3 in BNA’s Corporate Accountability Report. In the article, Mr. Spognardi discussed the varying protections of whistleblower statutes.

Chicago Partner Mark Spognardi was recently interviewed for an article that was posted April 29 to the Web site of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The article addressed the concern that employers may be lulled into a false sense of informality when conducting video interviews that might lead to inappropriate questions. SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management, representing more than 250,000 members in more than 140 countries.

Arnstein & Lehr Chicago Partner Mark Spognardi was quoted in the February 18 Corporate Counsel magazine article, “Judge OKs Wal-Mart’s firing of Medical Marijuana User.”  Mr. Spognardi discussed a Michigan federal judge’s decision to dismiss Joseph Casias’ wrongful termination claim against Wal-Mart.
