The National Institute of Standards and Technology will be expected to give a "full accounting" July 15 about the plutonium accident at its Boulder campus, where some of its employees received internal plutonium exposure, U.S. Rep. Mark Udall said today. "This latest disclosure, that medical tests indicate internal plutonium exposure, is the most troubling in a series of already unacceptable events," the Eldorado Springs Democrat said in a statement. "Our first thoughts are with the affected employees and their families, and we must work to ensure that they receive the best possible medical care and guidance." Udall said he is working with Senate Technology and Innovations Subcommittee Chairman David Wu to hold a hearing on July 15 in which he expects NIST to give a full accounting of how the accident happened, what it is doing to prevent similar accidents, what safety procedures were in place and whether they were being followed.

Colorado AFL-CIO Executive Director Mike Cerbo, joined by Colorado union members, announced endorsements of working family candidates including Mark Udall for United States Senate at the labor federation's annual political convention last weekend. "As a member of the United States Congress, Mark Udall has consistently fought for working families of Colorado, on issues like good jobs, fair trade and an economy that works for all," said Cerbo. "We're excited and ready to play a major role in supporting candidates at all levels like Congressman Udall who will stand with us on pocketbook issues."

Udall leads in Senate race poll

A new poll showing U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall with a 10-point lead over Republican Bob Schaffer is bad news for the GOP, coming at a time when national parties have to decide which races to throw money at, a political analyst said Thursday. The Quinnipiac University/Washington Post/Wall Street Journal poll showed likely Colorado voters preferring Democrat Udall by 48 percent to 38 percent. Udall has an even stronger lead among independents - 54 percent to 27 percent. "It looks like the race is trending away from Schaffer," said Floyd Ciruli of Ciruli & Associates of Denver. "That's a real problem, because he slips down on the national targeting list, and it's harder to get money. It makes everything about campaigning more difficult."

House of Representatives approves H.R. 5511

The Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel (LMDT) debacle has now gone all the way to Congress. The House of Representatives passed a bill June 19 directing the Bureau of Reclamation to take full responsibility for the LMDT?s present and future needs. Bill H.R. 5511 was co-sponsored by Congressman Mark Udall (D-Eldorado Springs) and Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado Springs). The legislation has moved to the federal level in large part because the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has been reluctant to assume full responsibility for the LMDT. A collapse in the LMDT that has trapped up to a billion gallons of water and threatened a ?blowout? has been a source of conflict in Lake County for years. "The physical blockage in the tunnel has been made worse by a legal and political blockage...the BOR has failed to step up," Congressman Udall has said.

Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., and a candidate for the Senate, is asking the Bureau of Reclamation to slow down its work on the controversial Southern Delivery System pipeline that would send water from Lake Pueblo to Colorado Springs. In a letter released Friday, Udall said it is likely the bureau's analysis of the SDS project will be challenged in court by opponents of the pipeline, so he urged the federal agency to slow down its work in finishing a final environmental impact statement. Udall also warned that the bureau's work likely will be reviewed by the House Natural Resources Committee, on which he serves.

Colorado congressmen John Salazar and Mark Udall have asked the federal government to make sure a company that wants to develop a mine on top of a western Colorado mountain has a valid claim to the public land. Groups opposing a proposed molybdenum mine on top of Mount Emmons near Crested Butte are praising the Democrats' request. Opponents, whose lawsuits to stop the mine failed, say federal officials rejected a similar request from them last year. Dan Morse of the High Country Citizens' Alliance said the conservation group appreciates the congressmen's efforts on an issue of importance to the Crested Butte community.

Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., called Tuesday for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to lift a moratorium on applications for solar projects. Udall, who's made the production of alternative energy a centerpiece of his Senate campaign against Republican Bob Schaffer, issued the request in a letter to Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne. The BLM announced in May that it would defer all new applications for rights of way for solar projects on agency land while it completed an environmental impact statement on solar development in six Western states, including Colorado. While Udall agreed with the need for more information about the impacts of solar energy facilities on public lands, he called for the agency to continue to evaluate new applications for the siting of solar projects on a case-by-case basis.

Two Colorado legislators said they aren't getting the answer they need about the safety of air tankers used to fight forest fires. The question of air-tanker safety was raised Thursday by U.S. Rep. John Salazar, D-Manassa, and U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs. They said that Agriculture Secretary Edward Schafer has not answered their question about when the federal agency would finish a plan to assure the safety of air tankers. "Fire season has arrived in Colorado and across the West," Udall said in statement. "For two years, I've been asking about plans to assure the future availability and safety of the air-tanker fleet. Now, two months after my most recent inquiry, Secretary Schafer has responded that the plan that was promised a year ago would be available 'shortly.'"
