Dragons of the Rainbow Pride Song

An original euphoric Pride festival anthem celebrating colour, visibility, freedom, and joy.

This song began as a playful idea: rainbow dragons flying over a Pride celebration. But through many rewrites, it became something more heartfelt. Each colour in the lyric was given its own image and emotional place, turning the song into a celebration of identity, inclusion, and the right to be seen.

At the heart of the song are the lines:

Musically, the track was shaped as a euphoric festival anthem, with huge sidechained supersaw leads, punchy four-on-the-floor drums, live toms, claps, rising snare builds, anthemic brass stabs, soaring vocal hooks, wide gang chants, bright synth arps, and big reverb-drenched drops.

The cover art continues the same idea: a stained-glass rainbow dragon rising over a Pride-inspired festival landscape. The dragon represents many colours held together as one living, shining form.

Building the Visual Identity for Cut Glass Publishing

The Art of Design:
When Cut Glass Publishing approached me to create their new brand identity and website, I knew this commission would stretch beyond code and functionality. This wasn’t just another WordPress build — it was an opportunity to define an entire visual language for a new publishing house. From logo design and typography to book cover artwork and site aesthetics, every creative choice would help establish how the brand presents itself to readers and authors alike.

A Brand Cut with Purpose

The name Cut Glass Publishing evokes clarity, reflection, and precision. Those three qualities became the foundation of the visual concept. The logo design began as a series of geometric studies, exploring how light interacts with faceted surfaces. After several iterations, I arrived at a minimal crystal crown — a form that feels timeless yet contemporary. Its symmetry suggests craftsmanship and balance, while the sharp edges and translucent gradients hint at creativity that refracts and multiplies.

I paired this emblem with a strong, condensed typeface in white against a deep indigo background. The combination is striking yet understated, deliberately avoiding clutter or ornamental detail. In branding, restraint often speaks louder than excess, and this was one of those moments where simplicity amplified the message.

Cohesion Across Mediums

Developing the branding for both digital and print required a unified approach. The color palette, typography, and logo styling were extended into social media banners, stationery, and eventually the book cover design for Restitution — the publishing house’s flagship title.

Designing Restitution: From Concept to Print

The Restitution cover became the visual centerpiece of the Cut Glass Publishing launch — a bold, cinematic image that captures both the psychological intensity and emotional depth of the story. The design centers on a lone female figure walking into a forest corridor, her silhouette framed by a network of dark trees fading into mist. The deep blues and grays of the background establish a tense, atmospheric calm, while the crimson crosshair centered on her back injects a visceral sense of danger and inevitability.

Typography plays a commanding role in the design. The vertical placement of the title Restitution along the spine, combined with the large block lettering of the author’s name, anchors the composition and balances the strong red palette. Every element — from the spacing between lines to the subtle vignette at the edges — was meticulously refined to maintain visual equilibrium when viewed both as a flat image and as a wrapped physical dust jacket.

Beyond the artistic vision lay a series of technical challenges that required precision and patience. Preparing a book cover for the KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) platform means adhering to exacting production standards. The final layout had to fit perfectly within Amazon’s print-on-demand template, taking into account bleed margins, spine width based on page count, and barcode placement. Even a fraction of a millimeter misalignment can throw off the finished print, so careful calibration was essential.

Working with publishing constraints also meant integrating the ISBN and barcode into the design without disrupting its visual flow. The barcode was positioned within a clean area of negative space to preserve aesthetic integrity, while the typography and background gradients were adjusted to ensure clear legibility across different printing finishes.

For the Kindle edition, the challenge shifted from full-wrap design to creating a front cover only — one that had to function equally well as a thumbnail on digital storefronts and as a high-resolution file for e-readers. This required a different balance of contrast and composition: bold enough to stand out in a crowded marketplace, yet subtle enough to maintain the atmosphere of mystery that defines the novel.

These technical considerations, while sometimes invisible to the reader, are what transform a good design into a professional-grade publication. Each decision — color profile, resolution, bleed, and export format — contributes to the final tactile and digital experience.

Typography became a key storytelling element: clear, modern sans-serif fonts for navigation and headlines; elegant serif pairings for body text, lending warmth and literary character. These choices create rhythm and contrast, echoing the interplay between precision and emotion that defines both art and literature.

Reflection and Renewal

In many ways, this project marks the intersection of my artistic and technical worlds. A year immersed in creative experimentation has not only reinvigorated my art but also refined my design instincts. It’s reminded me that creativity is a living process — a dialogue between exploration and application.

Cut Glass Publishing is a small, independent publishing house dedicated to showcasing creative writing, original fiction, and thought-provoking essays. The founders wanted a clean, contemporary website that would balance elegant design with the flexibility of a scalable WordPress framework. It needed to be visually striking but lightweight, ready to grow as the catalogue of titles and authors expands.

For me, the commission came at the perfect time. After several months focusing on client support, site migrations, and technical problem-solving here in Gandia, it felt refreshing to return to a full creative build from the ground up. There’s something deeply satisfying about developing a site that will serve as both a showcase and a platform for new voices in publishing.

Technically, the project gave me the chance to revisit some of the newer tools now available in the WordPress ecosystem. I took the opportunity to rebuild my development stack, refine performance optimization techniques, and experiment with hybrid content structures combining classic and block-based design. The challenge lay in crafting a layout that conveys the precision and clarity of the “cut glass” concept, while keeping typography, responsiveness, and accessibility front and center.

I used a custom child theme built on a lightweight framework, ensuring future-proofing without the overhead of unnecessary plugins. Clean CSS transitions, SVG-based icons, and subtle micro-animations help bring the site to life without compromising speed. Every element — from the transparent logo rendering to the deep indigo palette — was chosen to reflect the brand’s identity: modern, reflective, and sharp-edged with creative intent.

Beyond the technical side, the project reminded me how much I enjoy the process of translating a creative vision into a working reality. Art has always been a window into the human soul, a timeless means of expressing emotion, imagination, and perspective. Over centuries, the evolution of art has given us an abundance of styles, each shaped by its cultural and historical context. Today, artificial intelligence opens up new doors, allowing us to journey through these ages of art in a matter of moments, transforming a single concept into countless unique images, each rich with its own story and style.

Take, for example, the image of a natural cavern, grand and awe-inspiring. In its raw form, a cavern represents mystery, depth, and wonder—a natural cathedral sculpted by time itself. But what happens when we ask AI to re-imagine this concept through the lens of different artistic eras? The results are as diverse as they are fascinating.

Imagine the cavern as a 1930s watercolor painting, with delicate washes and muted tones, evoking a sense of serenity and introspection. Here, AI captures the subdued colors and soft lines of the early 20th century, transporting us back to a time when art leaned towards romantic naturalism. Then, a shift to the vibrant hues and expressive brushstrokes of an Impressionist style can transform the cavern into a scene alive with movement, where light dances across rocky surfaces, infusing the scene with a fleeting, dream-like quality.

AI can even take us further back in time. In the style of the Renaissance, the cavern becomes an architectural marvel, structured and grand, with careful attention to perspective and detail. Shadows deepen, and the cavern’s form takes on the meticulous realism prized in that era. In contrast, a surrealist version could twist and distort the cavern’s natural structure, creating a scene that challenges perception, leaving viewers questioning what is real and what is imagined.

This ability to re-imagine a single concept—a cavern, in this case—across different styles is not just an exercise in creativity. It’s a powerful demonstration of how AI can bridge time periods, enabling us to explore how one scene might be interpreted by artists from vastly different backgrounds and eras. Through AI, we can view the same subject through countless eyes, gaining insights into how culture and technique shape artistic vision.

As AI continues to evolve, so does our capacity to explore and experiment with art. A single idea can inspire a multitude of images, each revealing a unique facet of our shared human experience.
