Best Tablet Value On the Market

I've been using this tablet for about a month now, as my primary laptop. It replaced the previous model, the TX2, which I used for about 18 months. While the TX2 was very cool, it was also painfully slow, had a grainy screen, and terrible touch screen recognition. All of these issues have been fixed with the TM2.

The laptop is powered by the new Intel Core i3 processor, which is very fast. Once you've uninstalled the bloatware that comes on all HP machines, this is easily one of the faster sub $1,000 laptops available. Photoshop CS5 runs just fine. The multi-touch and pen inputs are very accurate, and the keyboard is quite comfortable. The screen is much improved over the previous model, and the picture is very clear and bright. The viewing angles are sub-par though, and the screen is super glossy.

Taking notes in Microsoft OneNote on this tablet is a wonderful experience. The included stylus also includes an eraser, which is a big help. Navigation with a finger and the virtual keyboard is also very good. I probably spend about half my time in tablet mode, without needing the keyboard and touch pad.

All said, this is probably the best consumer tablet PC on the market.

PROS:
-Tablet is quite fast. Multitasking is great with 4GB of RAM.
-Stays very cool, even with so much packed into such a small area.
-The tablet is absolutely gorgeous.
-Great Battery Life. 5-6 hours easily.

CONS:
-Incredibly Glossy Screen
-Sub-par viewing angles
-Too much pre-installed bloatware (although this problem plagues most consumer PCs)

Very Expensive to use: Network incompatability

HP TouchSmart tm2-2057sb 12.1-Inch Riptide Argento LaptopI bought three of these notebooks for my office. I'm a physician and we're attempting to go paperless in my office. Apparently there is an incompatibility issue with the network cards between MS and HP which the higher ups of HP had already been aware of. The connection had been slow with frequent droppings of the connections. After multiple calls to the HP tech support by my IT guy and finally reaching the higher ups of the HP, IT chain it was clear that the problems were already known, but only by the higher ups, and were being addressed. Unfortunately it cost me an additional $2,000 in IT services to figure this out. At the moment we're bypassing my network by using the USB connected, portable network card, also and additional charge. HP will be sending me three network cards that my IT guy will be replacing. I think he feels sorry for me because he says he won't be charging me to replace the cards.

Great notebook for the price.

Pro:
I had Windows 7 Home Premium, 500GB hard drive, 4GBs of RAM, and a 16" screen. It plays 720p videos great. I was even able to run Combat Arms on it.(Although only on small maps.) It has 4 USB ports and wireless N for fast wireless connection. I personally don't like having my hardware partitioned out so I combined all the partitions into one.

Con:
This notebook has 2 things that bother me about it. The touch pad is VERY sensitive. I can't tell you how many times ive made mistakes because the back of my thumb barely touched the touch pad. Also, the sound card has a very low buzzing noise coming from the left channel. Now after doing some experimenting I found that its caused by the wireless network. If I were to disable the wireless the noise went away.

Thoughts:
All and all the notebook is great buy for the price. I did a lot of research into brands and Asus came at the top of the list almost every single time in hardware quality and longevity. Now this notebook be refurbished it does not come with the warranty you would normally get with a new notebook but, it does come with a 3 month warranty. If you looking for a cheap notebook to do your school work or any type of writing this notebook is for you. If you like games and watch high quality HD videos this notebook is not the best choice.

Getting rid of the hissing noise

I bought this computer back in April of 2010, and I have to say, the computer is pretty good. Even after about 7 months, the computer still starts up and shuts down quickly.

As for those who have encountered the hissing noise, I have a solution that will get rid of the noise (it was annoying for me through the headphones, especially).

In the bottom right corner of the desktop, right-click on the sound and click "Playback devices." Then right-click (or double-click) on Speakers and click "Properties." Then go to the Levels tab, go down to "PC Speaker," and click on the little blue speaker button to mute, and then turn the knob all the way down just for good measure.

Then click Ok.

BUYER BEWARE...

Please know this is a great little computer. I got it for my daughter to take to college. She loves it. Please just realize that the one Amazon sells here is NOT NEW, but REFURBISHED!!!! They don't say that in their description, which is just wrong! When it arrived "refurbished" was written all over the box. I called Amazon customer service and they stated there was a problem with this page and that they were very sorry, that it was a mistake. I notice it still sells for the higher price of a NEW one and still doesn't say "refurbished" in the discription. This is just not right! I might even have considered keeping it because the price was actually good, but there were no instruction books, papers or any kind of documentation enclosed. I sent it back and went to Best Buy to buy it, but had to pay more. SO BUYER BEWARE!!!

A versatile high performance tablet PC/desktop computer replacement

This is the most versatile and powerful Tablet PC I've used to date.

Pros:

Available inputs = keyboard - customizable touchpad - customizeable digitizer pen - fingertips - optional USB mouse and last but not least a very accurate voice command using either the built in dual microphones or an optional headset.

As a tablet, the digitizer pen has very good sensitivity and terrific handwriting recognition ability.

Input using my finger tips on the screen is every bit as responsive and accurate as the screen of my iPhone 4 and allows for the same type of finger gestures (spreading, scrolling, etc.)

After purchasing the optional modular bay battery that occupies the optical (DVD) drive slot, I get over six and a half hours of battery life while using this dual battery configuration under the Windows 7 "High Performance" Power Plan.

The Intel multi-core i3 processor has plenty of processing speed and I believe in a tablet configuration provides a better balance of power, battery charge and heat dissipation than its beefier i5 and i7 siblings.

Out of the box this tablet performed very well for standard home use. I, however am not a typical home user and immediately upgraded the operating system to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit to overcome the 3GB memory barrier of the 32 bit OS and to unlock all available features.

My choices of hardware upgrades included 8GB of DDR3 RAM which is the machine's hardware maximum. This allowed me to permanently turn off virtual memory and eliminate that memory performance bottleneck as well as to minimize disk fragmentation.

To improve disk performance (IOPS) the 5400 RPM 160GB Hard Drive was replaced with a 7200 RPM 500GB Hard Drive.

To finish up the hardware upgrade, I loaded a Ready Boost compatible 16GB micro SD card into the built-in front panel slot and then configured it to be used exclusively for Ready Boost operations.

After the OS and hardware upgrades, the Windows Experience Index scores averaged 5.7 allowing this little tablet to perform everything I threw at it with the greatest of ease. My performance testing included running nine VMware virtual machines from an external USB drive simultaneously (Win 7 Pro 32, Win Vista Ult 32, Win XP 32, Win Srv 2008 Ent, Win Srv 2003 R2 Ent, Win SBS 2003 R2, Win Me, Fedora Linux and Free BSD 8.0 RC3) with applications and services running normally in each and keeping the performance settings on the host machine set for best appearance. If you can show me an iPad or netbook available today that will do that, I'll eat it smothered in tabasco sauce.

This tablet has an exceptional internal heat dissipation design with a built in removable air filter to keep the eventual damage from overheating caused by internal dust buildup to a minimum. (HP, Dell and NVidia should probably make a note of that one!)

Cons:

The fingerprint sensor has yet to recognize and register any of my fingerprints successfully.

In an effort to emulate their competitors, Fujitsu has included pre-loaded software utilities that produce errors on the first and all subsequent logons which provides an error noise and two boxes that need the "OK" buttons to be clicked before we can get started. This annoyance provides the customer with an assurance that this product was designed by humans that can err, and may occasionally forget to test products before their release.

The Fujitsu Shock Sensor software is a continuous interruption if allowed to operate. This utility has obviously been borrowed from standard Fujitsu notebooks, and is not designed for Tablet PCs that are frequently flipped around while jotting notes and then tucked back under an arm.

This tablet does not have outputs for S-Video or Composite video, but does have HDMI and VGA outputs.
After a month of using this tablet, I've had no "Blue Screens" and have been thrilled with the graphics and overall performance from this Veyron of Tablet PC's.

Great Laptop

I owned a Fujitsu T4215 and wanted to update my hardware with something as reliable as my old laptop. The T730 so far has shown me that it is another great product from Fujitsu. The capacitive screen is great for the tablet functions (no need to press hard against the screen, a slight touch will do) and stylus pen can be used as well with no problem. It is really interesting that it recognizes the pen from a few centimeters away so that you can rest your hand on the screen without influencing the pen.

Microsoft has done a good job when you compare the Windows 7 features to the Vista version. The tablet features are useful (apart from the games that I haven't really tried) and the systems is been running pretty smoothly so far.

As I said, it really helps me having both standard laptop and tablet functions all in one. The T730 could be a bit lighter and the price is not so attractive, but this computer hasn't disappointed me yet. Fujitsu is a great brand and at least where I live it's not as famous as HP or other brands. In my experience, it's much, much better than the HP tablets.

Tablet Computers are convenient AND inconvenient

I bought this tablet, because I didn't want an iPAD because I have to use Excel and Word often at work and with my writing, but I wanted something as convenient as an iPAD versus using my desktop in my home office.

PROS: I got the second modular battery which can be slide in the side bay in place of the DVD/writer. This is cool. 8 hours of battery life, perfect for when I'm on the run, working at someplace with a WI-FI or in my den at home. No bothersome power cord in the way.

CONS: The finger-touch screen and tracking pad is hard to master. I have a hard time zooming in and out and grabbing things. I can't seem to get it just right. Also, when you click forward or back a page, the ZOOM-IN/ZOOM-OUT seems to have a mind of its own.

PROS: The color screen is nice, and the ability to rotate it to be a laptop or be a tablet is also very convenient.

CONS: The stylus is useful, but if you tie it to the side of the tablet with the cord that comes with it, the cord gets in the way when you close the laptop.

PROS: My tablet came with 250 MB of RAM.

CONS: I bought an upgrade RAM chip with 100 MB of added memory, only to find, I couldn't install it, because all of the slots were filled, so buying the additional chip was a waste of money.

PROS: The design is nice looking like an iPAD.

CONS: The plastic finish is easily smudged by finger prints and oil on your hands.

BOTTOM LINE: I like it, and am going to keep it. It isn't perfect, but it works for me.

Love it so far!

I purchased my Asus Afterglow u50f new at BB on clearance for 585.99. I walked into BB with the intentions of buying a Toshiba but happened to see the Afterglow and thought I'd give Asus a try. I have to say that I am truly happy with my purchase. Although it is a larger laptop, it is still lightweight and easy to carry. Of course the outside is a fingerprint magnet but what computer out there today, isn't? It is quite glossy with a black sparkle-like finish. The keys are smooth, quiet and accurate. I love having the 10-key on the side-just in case. The screen is bright and the colors are perfect. I am still getting used to the Windows 7...so far, not too shabby. The bottom of the unit stays cool (the vent is towards the back, left side of the computer) so I can literally hold it in my lap. The touchpad took some getting used to and I wasn't crazy about the push bar-it was REALLY stiff out of the box. After some use, it is now a lot easier to push. The speakers are decent-I wasn't expecting much out of them. I was pleasantly surprised when I started listening to music and they didn't sound like tiny speakers. The optical drive is a bit flimsy but I don't plan on inserting a disc while running around the house so I think I will be alright. I have yet to test the length of battery life. Plently of USB ports, HDMI port, and it is upgradable to 8GB. Inside the unit- i3 processor, 4GB ram and 500GB memory. I can't ask for more-yet ;)

Incompetent Customer Service

This laptop is great. Excellent price (if it worked properly)
Its powerful, fast, clean, and sexy...

But if you don't have quite a bit of knowledge behind how computers work then the uneducated (and outsourced) customer service will leave you frustrated to say the least.

Below are the many issues that this computer has. (I've owned it for 1 month)

Current problems:

1. Audio output does not output anything other then 2-channel, and the quality was horrible.
Customer service (2 separate reps) said any other sound output (5.1 etc) is not supported by this model, and NO software or drivers will fix this. This is untrue... I fixed the issue myself by researching the Internet.

2. AI backup software was non-functional. (along with other ASUS software that I did not care to fix) See #3 for the fix...

3. Backup partition was not installed. Some customer service reps said this is normal, some said it is not. ASUS refused to send me the ASUS recovery CD that would fix this issue unless I paid $30.00-- or sent the computer in to be repaired (16 day wait time)

4. ASUS update utility software is non functional and inaccurate (after I got it to work...without the help of tech support)-- I magically got the software to work... then even when it was functional, it said no updates were necessary, when in reality about 50% of the drivers were out of date.

5. The date and time will change randomly when the computer is restarted. Customer support (4 different service tech support people) had ridiculous in non-logical "fixes"-- none of them worked.

6. The "P" key works about 20% of the time. Customer support said it could be hardware or software. All their recommendations (I tried about 4 different things) to "fix" it failed.

-- so after about a dozen calls to ASUS they finally said that I should do a complete system backup to the ASUS factory settings!!! -- what geniuses!!! I kindly reminded them (while gritting my teeth) that that would be impossible (for me to do) because the backup software and partition was non-existent, and because they refused to send me a recovery disk (unless I wanted to pay $30)..so they said to send the unit back for repairs... they said that it would take 16 business days to fix (plus shipping time)...no offer to upgrade shipping or anything.

FYI: I bought this computer from DIGITAL DISCOUNT... I highly recommend to stay away from them because their REFURBISHED models are obviously not refurbished to manufacturer specs... especially if they can not eve install the proprietary ASUS software correctly.

Impressive Portable

This is a review of the Lenovo x220 Core i7 with 128 Gb SSD (rather than 320 Gb hard drive) and bought directly from Lenovo. Came with 2 Gb RAM but I put in 8 Gb of Crucial RAM for $94. This little machine in this configuration is pricey but literally screams. Boots in 20 seconds; shuts down in 7 seconds; switches programs with iPAD2-like speed. Great keyboard for touch-typing, but Thinkpads always have the best keyboards IMO. The screen is extraordinarily bright. Weighs about 3 lbs. I've gotten b/w 6-7 hours on the battery with typical office use. Three USB ports (one hot) and HDMI/VGA. I use the x220 with Dragon Naturally Speaking, and it handles the software very well -- the best of any laptop I've used with Dragon. My accuracy has improved, and digitized text pops on the screen quicker than any other machine I've used. This is my seventh Thinkpad, and I've had very good luck with all of them. I think Lenovo has a winner with the x220, especially with SSD. I doubt I'll ever buy another machine without SSD -- so quiet and so fast. You might want to check out Lenovo's recently released e220s -- same size as the x220 but runs about $500 cheaper than the x220, depending on your configuration. It's really hard to find anything not to like about the x220.

Terrific Notebook except: Touchpad is unusable

I am a longtime Lenovo notebook fan -- I own an x100, 120E, T61, x200, and x201, and now an x220. The main reason I have stuck with the brand is the quality keyboards and Matte displays.

In terms of battery life and processor speed, this notebook is outstanding. However -- the touchpad was completely redesigned for the x220 and Lenovo blew it here. If you are typing a document, you'll find that the cursor flies all over the screen as you type -- even if you have the 'turn touchpad off while typing' option checked! It's highly annoying. The problem is that your hands are always resting on the touchpad if your fingers are on the keyboard. In previous designs, this was not the case.

The only workable solution for me is to completely disable the touchpad, which is stepping back to an earlier era. My x200 doesn't have a touchpad either, so I don't absolutely need to have one, but they're nice to have.

I agree with another reviewer here who identified this as a serious problem that reduces the usefulness of the notebook. My Dad also has he same issue -- he just bought an x220 and needed to turn his completely off as well. People who do very little typing, who just view web-pages or watch movies, etc will probably not be affected. Those needing to do serious work will be.

Lenovo, you're doing a great job overall, but I hope you're listening! This is a serious problem that you'll need to fix in the next design cycle.

Ultranav Touch Pad. ARRRRRR!

I purchased the X220 to replace an aging Dell M1210. I was drawn to the X220 because of it's Premium HD IPS display option and it's battery life. Well I got those features and they are great. The battery life with the optional 9 Cell is incredible, exceeding 10 hours. What I did not expect was the infuriating Touch Pad. Why did they not sort this out before going live. I'm having to learn all over again after growing to really like the Pad on my Dell. The Lenovo pointer jumps and bounces around like it's possessed. At the moment it's almost unusable. The left button press often yields no action or gives the pop down menu that you would expect from the right button.

My final gripe is that I'm not sure I dig the wide screen format. For business use I'm not convinced it is the best option. I may regret this purchase over the long haul, thinking that I should have instead purchased an HP or Dell.

Update: Ok it's been about three months of torment now with the Touchpad and my opinion still stands. For those of you who are conflicted about the usefulness or merits of a Touchpad let me elaborate. The X220 has both a Track Pointer and Touchpad. The Touchpad is a new design that combines the Left and Right mouse buttons into the Touchpad as integral single unit. The difficulty is that the Touchpad often seems confused as to whether you are pushing a button or simply trying to move the cursor about the screen. For those of us used to two handing the Touchpad it will be especially frustrating. As you attempt to scroll with your right hand fingers and control the buttons with your left, the cursor will wander in confusion. It's always amusing to watch a collegue take control of my computer during a presentation only to recoil from the behavior of the Touchpad. The response is usually something to the effect of "Wow what's up with that?"

Also the durability of the trim around the LCD is poor. The top left corner of my panel trim has already failed. I have not imposed any undue abuse that would justify this. This is my first Lenovo and maybe my last.

Love my tablet!

Excellent tablet! I'm running Windows 7 RC on mine, and it's got the horsepower to do it right. I added 4GB of RAM and a 16GB solid state drive in the expresscard slot for ReadyBoost, and the difference is notable, although I haven't run any benchmarks to back up my perception. There are plenty of video reviews as well as reviews of the features under Windows XP and Windows Vista out there on the internetz; like everyone else - I can't get the panel display to auto-rotate in tablet mode under Windows 7, nor does the rotate "hot key" button work, but I found iRotate at [...] to mange my display, and it works like a charm. I bought mine from HP Direct on a scratch 'n dent sale for some serious savings, but it's worth every penny of the list price!

Great For Digital Art!

I bought this tablet for graphic art, $450 at eBay, and used it on Photoshop CS3 and Manga Studio 4 EX. The great pen's cursor response is excellent: NO lagging or skipping while drawing (and no need of battery). Just remember: LE1700 doesn't have a CD-Rom drive, so you'll need to save all your work on external disk or USB memory stick. That said, if you're OK with 12" drawing area, this is a GREAT tablet for mobile graphic artists. If you need a bigger screen (plus CD/DVD drive and keyboard for writing graphic novel scripts on the go), I recommend the 14" Toshiba Tecra M4, which now sell at $150. It can do 'almost' what the $900+ Wacom Cintiq 12WX offers you, and it's not only a monitor. Of course, its outdated processor might be too slow today for viewing the heavily-overloaded Internet, but if you use it only for drawing and writing--it rocks!

You do get more than you pay for here

Ok, lets get down to it for this unit. First of all make no mistake, this is not, and I repeat not a full blooded notebook or laptop. This is the next evolution in netbook. The description that Amazon has is a bit flawed and misleading in many ways which I have emailed them about. The "CPU" in this unit is actually AMD's new APU series of chipset that combine the graphics card with the CPU creating the APU (Accelerated Processing Unit). While it is listed as a dual core, just remember that this is a dual core 1GHZ processor along the same lines as Intel's Atom CPU. With that said I will get down to the pro's and cons of this unit.

PROS:
Graphics: - Video Playback. This unit has remarkable graphics performance. The chipset in this unit produces amazing clarity and smoothness when streaming from Netflix, HULU or from a DVD. I have experienced no issues with the video quality of the unit.

Monitor: - The 1080i Screen this unit comes with further enhances the viewing pleasure with amazingly sharp crisp color and clarity. I've yet to see any other netbook or laptop with a screen this nice.

Audio: - You have to hear these speakers to believe it. I was floored at their ability to reproduce clear crisp sound and bass with no distortion even at louder volumes. Not a room filling experience, but you wont need headphones to listen to your music or watch a movie with this unit.

RAM: - 3GB of RAM that this comes with is more than suffice to power it on the vast majority of productivity applications and multimedia. I however opted to upgrade it to the max of 8GB to further help the sometimes anemic APU get through tasks. It was worth the extra $45 for two 4GB sticks of Kingston RAM.

Gaming: - The all important question for a lot of you out there. This will play back basic disc based games and the basic online games. Steam works well on it, games like TF2 had no issues with it, but you are not going to be zooming through games such as WoW or SL as the APU just does not have the power to handle that demand.

Appearance: - Don't let the word (Mocha) fool you into thinking the entire device is coffee colored. This unit's visual design is a winner all around. The screen, keyboard and bottom of the unit are black like most laptops, the area surrounding the keyboard, the touch pad and speaker area are what is "mocha" colored, which is more of a deep and dark bronze color that is both subtle and visually appealing. It gives the unit a real look of class and that it's a lot higher priced than it is.

Keyboard & Touchpad: - Win! The chicklet style of keys make typing a breeze on this laptop if you have small hands like me or huge hands like the rest of my family. The full keyboard along with the full number pad on the right side make it very nice to use. You wont have to get used to the layout of a cramped laptop keyboard and go hunting for keys on this unit. The touchpad is awesome, smooth to the touch, very responsive, supports multiple gestures and it's "palm proof" technology really works. Drag your hands across the pad and it will not register that as input, preventing you from making accidental input.

Case: The Ice cool technology really works, even after working this unit out hard core to see how far I could push it, the bottom of the case never got warm, the hand rest and keyboard area also never got warm, even in a room with a 82F temp. The fan is super quiet. it's lightweight and sturdy so you don't feel like you are going to break it by moving it around.

Battery: 8 hours easily. This was obtained from streaming a Netflix movie for 2 hours, playing around on Facebook games, video chat, google+ activity and then into web surfing for the remainder of the time. The battery also charged back up to 100% after just under two hours.

CONS:
Multitasking: - Out of the box the unit is a bit anemic when it comes to multitasking. Adding more RAM does help this as do some of the suggestions at the end of this review. Once you iron it out, it tends to be acceptable, but if you are coming from a powerhouse computer, this one will drive you batty for awhile at it's response times.

Preinstalled ASUS Software - I really don't know what they were thinking when they put on their own software. I know all manufacturers do this, but these programs were the entire reason the laptop out of the box was so sluggish. Some of them even when not running were hoarding 500MB worth of RAM, others had multiple instances of themselves running. The ASUS updater program that's supposed to update all your drivers should be removed immediately before it screws up your system totally. Mine decided to download drivers for the wrong unit and install them, which forced me to have to do a full recovery in order to get the unit working again. There is plenty of griping on ASUS's forums about the program and the suggestion there is to remove it.

Processor: - While it is suffice for daily use, web surfing, emails, chats, streaming and the basics, it is not a power house nor a multi-tasker beyond a few low key programs at the same time. Otherwise it will start bogging down on you.

Overall, this is a nice unit with a lot of nice well thought out design features and quality construction. It is a good unit for a college student, high school student, casual web surfer, someone who just wants a laptop or for those who don't need massive computing power. Just do your research on the APU before you buy to see if this will handle what you want to do that I didn't cover in the review.

Suggestions: - Remove the preinstalled ASUS software. None of it is mission critical, if you are worried that it may be, just look it up online or in ASUS's forums. Also when you get yours, check the hard drive partitions. Mine was....oh...screwed up at the factory for whatever reason and was partitioned into four partitions plus the recovery partition. I had to merge (easily done with Windows 7) all the partitions so I had only one partition on my drive (plus the recovery drive). Also since there is no physical media to recover this unit with. I strongly suggest making a recovery DVD after you get it all set up the way you want. That way if it dumps on you, you can use the iso to restore it without having to go through all the set up again, nor the over 600MB of Windows updates (yeah...that took awhile).

Fantastic Laptop, especially considering the price

This turned out to be a great decision. I am in the middle of high school, so I need something that will last a little while, and perform pretty well. This easily does everything that I need, and also has a surprisingly good battery life. This was the one thing that I was weary about when I bought it, but the battery lasts a good 5 hours on average for me, doing basic tasks, and some video watching. Considering the price, this is probably the best laptop you can find, even though it is a little bit obscure. It runs quite fast for me, and has everything that I could need in a computer.

An amazon kindle "Special Offer"

I had heard that Asus computers had a good reliability record despite having a low price. When this showed up as a special offer on the Kindle screen saver I took advantage of the chance to save forty dollars. It isn;t lightning fast. But it is a nice notebook with a big screen. It is not hot on my lap like other notebooks. All for $270. Big keyboard. Looks nice. Good to have a backup computer. No state tax, free shipping. I shop everywhere, then buy Amazon.

I've owned a Lenovo T43, T60p, X61T, X200T and now the X220. Lenovo makes excellent machines.

Pros: Thinkpad Build Quality, Keyboard, HD IPS display, Battery life, Docking station, All day battery slice

Cons: Price for a tricked out model

I purchased the i7 model and then added an after market Intel OEM 300 GB SSD. This thing flys. Windows Experience Index is a 6 due to graphics but processor, memory and hard disk (SSD) all score in the mid-7's. I had heard great things about the IPS display and without a doubt, this is the best computer screen I have ever had. The resolution could be higher but with my vision it is certainly acceptable. The viewing angles are fantastic and the screen is bright.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, the X220 has a 7 mm drive rather than the standard 9.5 mm. Intel's 320 series SSD's with models ending in 301 are 7 mm high and come in sizes up to 600 GB. I used Acronis to clone the hard disk to the SSD, swapped the drives and was up and running in about 2 hours, 1.95 hours of that for the cloning process.

I was torn between buying this, a MacBook Air or the Lenovo X1. The other two may look better but in terms of pure performance, tremendous battery life and the IPS Display the X220 wins out IMO. Build quality is fantastic. It may look like the X200 or X201 that came before it but it is a proven succesful design with plenty of power under the hood. I have absolutely no regrets with this purchase, the X220 is a great machine.

Hard Drive Size Issue!!!

I purchased my X220 from an individual locally.
I think it is necessary to post this as a warning.

I really like this laptop. The performace is amazing.

BIG ISSUE:
The hard drive slot height is 7mm. The standard is 9.5mm.

Do not expect to buy a standard 2.5" laptop drive (spindle or SSD) and expect it to fit. I usually research before purchasing anything. My bad, didn't even think it would have this height issue.

I think Toshiba makes an HG3 series SSD (7mm height) that might just work. Does anyone know of where this can be purchased?

Please be aware of this.

Fastest Small Laptop on the Market

I had a Samsung Netbook with the Atom processor that was driving me nuts how slow it was. A good computer for $350, but too slow for my needs doing mostly internet browsing, the processor was always maxed out. This Thinkpad is so fast, much faster then my other 3 computers including a Dell, another older Thinkpad 400 and a HP desktop. For example, to load CNN.com on my old Samsung, it took about 7 seconds, this takes about 1 second. I have Comcast wireless with 50Mbps speed and I get 45Mbps download on this. The dual core processor is very fast for all tasks. The Thinkpad came loaded with Windows 7 Professional, since Im a new to Windows 7 (use Xp on other 3 computers) it has been a learning curve, but I am starting to like it. I found many ways to make it look and feel more like my XP so I am getting more comfortable. Back to the Thinkpad, there are some that criticize the trackpad. I found I had to customize it to stretch out the edge that it uses for detecting movement, that helped a lot as otherwise, I was finding errant selections to happen. It took me an hour or so to play around with the choices, but now it works great and is as good as any laptops pad. The keyboard is amazing also. I really like the light that you can turn on that illuminates the keyboard for working at night in low lights. As for battery, it probably does get about 7-9 hours, but I have the backlit contrast turned all the way up which reduces mine to about 6 hours, anything better then 4 I consider good anyways. As for the screen, it is amazing, so much better then my old netbook. The sound could be better, but I like the volume and on-off buttons on the keyboard that are dedicated to the sound. My old Netbook was a bit lighter, but this is still a notebook weight, but with a full laptop speed (minus a DVD drive), and more, believe me this is a screaming fast machine, amazaing is all I can say. I had some issues with my Symantec Internet Security not fully working, found out that I had to run Internet Explorer 9 in 32 bit mode, not 64, not an issue at all and a call to Symantec took me 2 minutes to change that. The PG UP and PG DN are at the top right, I like them on the lower right of the keyboard so I remapped two keys that are at the lower bottom to move forward and back on web pages, to now be the Pg UP and PG DN keys, it was a freeware program and I love now. The delete key is also in the upper right, but it is a double sized key so I like it now that I am used to it. When I am working and want to put it in sleep mode, I just press the on-off button and it goes right into sleep mode, pressing it again later, it comes back on within 5 seconds, then about 10 seconds more to reconnect to my wireless, very nice. If you want a Netbook sized and weight computer that is more powerful then most laptops and desktops, this is the computer. I did a ton of research and even though this is much more expensive, consider you are getting a full computer with a dual core processor. I ended up getting the 4Gb model and bought another 4Gb (8 total) from Crucial that took me less then 3 minutes to install. If you can afford the higher price, buy this, you won't be sorry as I am extatic about this little lightening fast computer.

Bad customer sevices and bad keyboard/touchpad

This is one of the best computer but made with very bad keyboard, typing is very hard on this computer. tacchscreen is ok since it moono touched, it was much better that it was a multitouch screen instead of single touch. panasonic with these great product has the worst customers services, and worst support system. If it was not the product i could give Panasonic 1 star only of its customer services. I hope this is helpful for you

worst warranty service of any computer MFG

I did not buy this model--i bought the CF-30, which cost me more than twice as much as this one is listing for...
it is a rugged computer, So, these computers rarely break. But they do sometimes break.
If yours breaks, forget about it. Just go buy a new one.

My computer broke (i dropped it--not from Six feet, but from about the height of my bedside table...
Panasonic made me prove the warranty by sending a copy of my sales reciept before they would even talk to me about service.
Then they tried to talk me out of having the on site service, saying it would be faster and easier if i just sent them the computer.
The onsite service guy was nice, but had not been trained on how to fix the Toughbooks, so he took it home with him and sent it to Panasonic.
That was a week ago.
The onsite guy said i should leave my hard drive inside the computer.
He called later and said Panasonic would send me a new computer right away.
Then he called back and said that they would not cover accidental damage...and i should have bought one more warranty...

I pointed out that the warranty covered "non-intential damage"...their representative said that while "non intentional" seems to mean "accidental" it does not mean that "accidental" is covered!

The manager at Panasonic promised to look into my case...but never called me back.
One of my warranties included 'overnight' service.
I was later told that "overnight' means next business night, which, on a Friday, means Monday...but because Monday comes after Sunday, Monday means Tuesday...

Anyway, they have my money, and my computer....and this review.

Great Convertible Tablet

First: My review is for a slightly different configuration of the tm2t. I have the upgraded processor, Core 2 Duo SU9600 (1.60GHz, 800MHz FSB) w/512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 4550 Graphics, and the 500 GB HDD. I've had it for a week now and the short of it is: I love it. I'd give it 4.5/5 stars if Amazon would let me. I rounded down to 4 stars as there are a few nitpicky things keeping it from perfect.

Second: I love tablets. My previous laptop was a Toshiba R15, but it was getting a little old and the battery was dying, so it was time to look around for another. So why not wait for the glut of slate tablets this year, such as the ipad or HP Slate? Well, I love being able to hand-write notes, draw and sketch, and yet still type for a variety of projects I use the laptop for. I love Microsoft OneNote (one of the few programs they really got right), and I'm not sure how well it would run (if at all, like on the ipad) on the slates, and I don't mind navigating with a stylus (sometime I even prefer it). Mostly, though, I really need to be able to type (a lot) for both work and home. Yes, you can get docks for the slates that let you type, but they seem clunky so far and I always liked having the convertible so the keyboard is always with you, and truth be told, I do spend more time in notebook mode than in tablet mode, but I still do have the option of running it as you would a slate. So choosing a tablet has much to do with how you plan on using it.

Pros:
- First (and only, as far as I can tell) tablet with an option for discrete graphics. I've been waiting for this for years.
- Very light and easily portable
- Switchable graphics helps saves battery power, overall battery life is good
- Large touchpad area
- Sound is great for such a small machine
- HP Touchsmart software

Cons:
- Occasional poor touchpad/touchscreen operation
- No physical lock to keep screen down when in tablet mode, screen can be hard to grab to convert back to notebook
- Screen rotation is manual

Graphics: One of the main selling points for me was the option for the discrete graphics. As a previous tablet user, I had to watch while all the other notebook users got to play their games while I couldn't. Now, finally, my laptop can do everything I want. I'm able to play Everquest 2 on it, which is a very graphics-demanding application (I couldn't run it at all on my Toshiba, and I'm sure the default GMA 4500 Graphics accelerator would probably do the same). Yes, the settings are turned down to medium and it can run a bit choppy at times (I average around 15 fps, and if that seems low, bear in mind EQ2 demands a lot more than World of Warcraft, I'm sure WoW would run at ~30 fps), but it runs, and I can play it easily. Other games ran perfectly, with crisp-looking graphics. If you want to be able to play some higher-end games on a tablet, this is the one you want. If you just want a purely gaming notebook, though, there are certainly better ones out there. One other plus: the graphics actually switch between low and high power states, depending if the laptop is plugged in. Basically this means for things like Everquest you're going to want to be plugged in, but it allows you to save battery life when on battery (you could keep it in high mode if you wanted, though). I didn't even see this advertised, but I thought it was a neat little additional feature, and I didn't notice any noticeable drop in graphics quality when in low-power mode (although EQ2 dropped to about 5-8 fps).

[Update 3: Everquest is averaging better than 25 fps now, sometimes even in the 40's. I think the initial low numbers were due to a new expansion pack and lots of players. Even better news for the graphics capabilities on this tablet.]

Construction: The body is nice, the whole tablet is light without feeling cheap, and it's easily portable. My old Toshiba is a beast compared to it. I like that the touchpad is larger than other pads I've seen, even if it occasionally acts up (see below). It's amazing how much they cram into such a small space. There are plenty of ports (something I wonder if all the upcoming slates will have) including USB, VGA and HDMI.

Screen: This one I was really worried about. My old Toshiba had a 14.1" screen, and I looked at some similar-sized screens before ordering it, but I was afraid it was going to be too small to be able to use daily. The good news: it's not. Yes, it's definitely a small screen compared to many other notebooks, but it feels bigger than it is, definitely better than any of the 10" netbooks, and colors are sharp and clear, and I can operate any of the programs (like OneNote) or games just fine and without squinting. It's smooth with a glass feel to it, which is nice for using the touchscreen and I love writing on it far more than my Toshiba, but it does tend to reflect a lot.

Sound: the included Altec Lansing speakers are impressive for how small they are. Yes, you won't get much bass out of it, but music and sounds are crisp and clear, not tinny at all.

Battery Life: This seems good, if not great, but no different than any other laptop out there. I'm sure if you just let it sit there and not do anything you can get the advertised 9-plus hours. Regular use seems to be around 4-5 hours, though I haven't really put it to any tests yet, like running a DVD movie from an external drive. I'll see if I can get back on this. Certainly for running in tablet mode and surfing or watching video streams, I have no complaints.

Tablet: Speaking of which, I really like the HP Touchsmart software that came with it. It basically lets you use it as you would any of the upcoming slate tablets, with icons for watching local or streaming videos (such as Hulu and Netflix), viewing photos, surfing the web, etc. I don't know if HP will offer any Apps (which is supposed to be part of the big deal with the ipad and such), but it's great for stuff you already do. A couple complaints here, though. When you flip the screen around and put it in tablet mode, there is no latch like my Toshiba had to keep the screen in place. It's not been a problem yet, but a locking mechanism would have been nice. Similarly, when you want to flip the screen back up to notebook mode, you have to pry the two halves apart. There could have been a slight indentation to get your fingers under the screen to make it easier. Also, there's a button that lets you switch the screen orientation. On my old Toshiba you could set it to automatically switch when in tablet mode, then back when in notebook mode. If that's an option here, I haven't found it yet, although it always switches back when you go to notebook mode, so maybe I just haven't been able to find how to set it (the manual just says to rotate via the button).

Touchpad/touchscreen: My last complaint has to do with the responsiveness of both the touchpad and the touch screen. I can't tell if the problem is hardware or software based, but I though it worth mentioning, although I wouldn't call it a show-stopper by any means. I like that the touchpad is bigger than other pads I've seen, but it doesn't always seem to do what I tell it. Sometimes the cursor hops all over the screen while I'm just dragging my finger, while other times it doesn't seem to respond at all for a second or two. Other times it will zoom in or out seemingly on its own. It is a multi-touch pad, so maybe that's part of it and I just need to learn how to operate it better, but I don't think that's always it. Also, the touchscreen doesn't always seem to respond. For example, while watching a Netflix movie, you could press the pause button but there was a delay before the movie would pause, then when I pressed play, it didn't acknowledge the first press and I had to hit it again. I've tried pressing slightly harder or longer, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. I find myself pressing a button twice sometimes in order to make it work. Again, this might just be me getting used to a touchscreen, but I'm not so sure. They're both usable, just a little annoying and frustrating at times, and the touchscreen might be a problem if you wanted it purely as a tablet.

Summation: Any complaints I have, though, I consider minor. 4.5/5 stars. This is a great convertible tablet for those who are looking for one. No other tablets right now could match the specs (esp. with the discrete graphics) for the price. The Lenovo and Dell tablets were typically (...) more for their high-end models to begin with, and you can get HP coupons and instant sales that can save you as much as (...) off their listed price, making it hands down the best deal for a tablet right now.

Update 1: After fiddling with the settings of the touchpad and making it less sensitive, it works much better now. Still occasionally jumps around, but I get that with every touchpad I've ever used, so that's probably just me. Also, I think the touchscreen has a "sleep mode", i.e. if there's no touch after a few seconds, it takes 2-3 touches to respond, but as long as you keep touching, it works fine (I'm guessing this is so errant touches won't click on something you don't want).

Update 2: Had this for two weeks now. Overall performance is great (though you'll want to remove some of HP's pre-installed software) and battery usage is actually quite good. I was able to watch a 2 hour-10 minute movie and only used 50% of the battery (my old Toshiba would barely make it to 2 hours, with the screen darkened). It actually determined I was on battery and ran it in a lower-power mode to conserve. I ran it again in the regular mode and couldn't even really tell any difference (screen was maybe brighter, but wasn't like night and day), although the screen reflection did get a little distracting at times. I really love the glass-feeling screen, particularly writing and drawing on it, though, so it's a trade-off I can live with.

It would be nice if it had a physical volume control for when in tablet mode, but that's not a big deal. Also, in case you couldn't tell, it doesn't have a built-in DVD drive, so I bought an external. This wasn't a big deal to me since I rarely use discs anymore (and definitely prefer the weight savings it gives for portability), but something to keep in mind if you need it.

Finally, after continuing to play with the touchscreen, it's the one piece of this I think keeps it from a full 5-star. The "sleep" function gets irritating as you constantly have to keep hitting it to "wake up" if you haven't touched the screen in about 10-15 seconds. As long as you stay within that 10-15 sec window, it works perfectly, but that's not really what you want in a touchscreen. If there are settings for it, I haven't been able to find them, and I've even emailed HP about it (no response yet). I would consider the touchscreen as a secondary or supplemental input device (say, in concert with the pen, which works rather well), but if you want something as purely a touch tablet, I cannot recommend it (unless HP comes out with a fix for the "sleep" mode).

So, while I think the physical design could have used a few tweaks (volume button, screen rotation and button implementation, screen lock, touch/track pad operation), these are really just issues of convenience and preference. The overall performance, functionality and feel make it a great convertible tablet. I'll stick with my original 4.5/5 stars, especially when you look at other tablets out there for the price.

Great Student Tablet

I am typing this on the exact configuratin here -- the 1070us -- with the 4 gigs, the 7300 processor, and the low end intel graphics (with the 320 gig, 7200 rpm hard drive).

Where the reviewer is coming from: I've had a lot of tablets -- primarily toshiba -- including the 3500 and M200 and M4 -- so I have a good frame on what tablets can and can't accomplish. I place a high value on being able to use my tablet for note taking and as electronic paper. I'm willing to carry an extra lb or two for the features I need to do this.

What's wrong with this machine is immediately obvious. It is 4.7 lbs, it has a low power processor which doesn't scream, and it has intel graphics. The screen, while quite lovely, is not glass (which, if you're carrying it everywhere, is not actually a bad thing). It lacks some of the nifty features of my macbook, like a backlit keyboard. But...I still love this thing. Here's why.

It is cool (and quiet). Every tablet I've ever had (including the Fujitsu I almost got and may yet add to the collection) runs HOT. A dual core 2.x ghz processor is a big fat 40 or 60 watt lightbulb, pouring heat between the keyboard and the back of the screen and making the surface feel like a stovetop (and/or turning ribbon cables to a melted spray on a hot day) The low voltage dual core processor runs everything I need (including photoshop and word and outlook and Visual Studio) reasonably well (no big lags or complaints), and it runs cool enough that I can leave this on all the time -- through a four hour class or meeting, or just on my lap for an evening watching movies.

The battery lasts. Throttled down just a little, I get the better part of a workday out of this (7 hours of doing real things)...compared to my macbook, which gets about 2 to 3 hours for the same task set. To use this as paper, the thing has to come on (and stay on) without an outlet. This is netbook-level battery husbandry, and it changes how I can use the computer.

It is built like a...well, it is strongly built. I feel OK about putting this in it's sleeve and stuffing it in my pack. I'm hell on notebooks, and this one seems likely to put up with that. I am pleased it does not have a DVD-ROM. I have several externals (and those in other computers)...it is a delicate mechanism I am not throwing in my pack. This is a good thing!!

It is inexpensive, _with_ a 1 year HP (not third party) accidental damage warranty (which you can get from HP no matter where you buy the tablet). I spent less than a grand. If it gets stolen, I will be sad...but I won't be trashed the way I'd be if a brand new X201 i7 got snarfed. It is consumer hardware at a consumer cost. This means I can use it casually and consistently as replacement for a paper notebook without carrying around my entire personal fortune.

THere are choices I liked that others might not. No more automatic screen switching, there's a button on the side (and hey, I know what orientation I want when I want it). The zillion buttons which come with most tablets are replaced with software control -- on a true touch screen, that makes sense. And the glossy screen -- in contrast to most wacom enabled tablets, which are more grainy - is something I like but a serious artist might not. For me, the shiny, very consumer "first glance" screen will be a great thing for showing software to clients (hey look, you can touch it! Go on, poke the button!).

You will have to diddle the settings a bit to make the pen pressure work for art. Enough folks are buying these that there is help on the web. GIMP was not happy (GTK+ issues with pressure pens for this machine as of this writing). Photoshop and Sketchbook Pro worked fine (and ArtRage was a gas). With the intel graphics -- no suprise -- Mudbox and Softimage weren't really usable. But the big one -- 3ds Studio Max -- worked well for me though (as does Blender). Areo and so on work just fine with the 4500 graphics though, as do most of the OpenGL examples with QT (more than I expected and more than work under Fusion on my Mid 2009 MBP).

Real downsides: you have to take off _every_ peice of HP bloatware that comes with it. When you've stripped away everything they crammed on to "help" you, it is actually quite snappy (but not before lol). Replace the norton with microsoft security essentials and uninstall pretty much all the presumed goodies (including the games, the HP print helpers which do nothing unless you give them money, the assistance software which is just a way to sell you things you don't need, and the netflix and hulu "viewers" which are in fact inferior to just watching it over the web, the touchscreen stuff that sounds necessary but is really HP second guessing Windows 7 -- when that is gone, you have a different -- and much faster -- machine). A dual core 7300 is actually quite nice for everything I do (not screaming, but I can even compile QT) -- but only if the initially installed bloatware is removed, and one uses reasonably security software with an emphasis on performance and reasonable scope...

In short, it is a near-perfect note taking and carry everywhere machine, for this writer.

Firstly, I love this laptop on paper. In my opinion, it is the best looking in its class at the moment, has a wonderful (although very glossy and reflective) screen, and runs silently and quickly even with the standard processor as it's sold here. I also like the placement of the fingerprint reader on the righthand side of the screen instead of sitting under my right hand while I am typing. The touchpad is also extremely impressive with it's flat (buttons built in instead of standalone) and very large (comparable to my Macbook) design. I love the keyboard too. Very nice sized keys, just the right amount of resistance, easy to let my fingers fly on. Having multitouch on the screen and on the touchpad is a whole new realm of computing comfort.

Now, let me go on to say that I ordered this laptop only to receive a unit with a defective system board. The first time I turned it on the unit crashed and gave me a blue screen 4 times before I could get through a complete Windows setup. Since no one I talked to at HP knew what a blue screen was, they tried to blame Windows. After reinstalling Windows and running a bunch of tests during 5 or 6 calls to HP, the unit continued to bluescreen during or soon after startup. This is my second HP touchsmart PC (I also have the desktop, which had a defective dvd drive right out of the box) and I was disappointed in HP's inability to step up and replace this for me themselves. (In all fairness, they did offer to attempt to repair it, but I would be out a laptop for 6 weeks due to my work schedule and in the end have a refurbished unit for which I paid full price. If a refurbished unit is ok with you, I'd save a few hundred bucks and just buy that upfront. At least it's been tested that way.) So, I had to return the unit to Amazon, who gave me no hassle and offered me a full refund or replacement. Since I need a laptop now and can't wait to see the fabulous new options coming out summer 2010, I took Amazon's offer of a replacement and bought a 3 year warranty from Squaretrade. I have hopefully seen the last of my problems with this model and still like it enough to look forward to a few years of good use. Should that not turn out to be the case, I will update this review.

Bottom line: If you buy this sharp little laptop, get a warranty.

UPDATE 5/19/10: Got the replacement, turned it on, got through setup once, BAM - blue screen!! I couldn't believe it!! Turned out to be fixable, a problem with the fingerprint reader drivers which we reinstalled and now it's fine. Luckily we didn't have anything worse than that (or have to call HP). Now that I've used it for a few weeks, I have this to add.

PROs:

1. Screen was readable in full sunlight. Better with sunglasses and not showing the vibrant colors you see indoors, but not like my last laptop that was worthless outdoors.
2. Fabulous battery life. I can go a solid 4 or 5 hours of use without ever plugging in the battery.
3. Still love the touchpad and keyboard. Both are well designed, easy to use, and beautiful to look at.
4. When in tablet mode, I like having the button right on the side of the screen that let's me manually rotate the viewing mode from landscape to portrait and vice versa. When it's time to open it back into a 'laptop' again, the screen automatically flips back into normal landscape mode, which is nice.
5. Runs quiet for the most part. I hear the fan, but it's not something that will keep my husband awake at night.
5. Wacom style pen fits inside the unit so I (hopefully) won't lose it. Very useful for hovering over a link, picture, etc to see hidden text. I usually use my finger, but the pen has been more useful than I thought it would.

CONs:

1. The weight is not well-distributed, so the laptop can't sit on my lap without falling backwards. It does ok on hard surfaces that provide a little bit more support, but won't stay up on the couch, bed or on my lap. Not a huge deal just less comfortable to use in these situations.
2. On my replacement (not on the first one) the screen doesn't line up with the bottom part when it is in tablet mode, making the touchpad turn on and off all the time. This puts a pop up in the middle of the screen every time it turns on and off and I am always having to force it into place but it won't stay there. Disappointing.
3. When browsing having flash pages, computer would freeze often making it the animation less enjoyable. I'd get the better processor if I could go back and do it again.

Now you it's up to you to decide! :) In the end I'm still glad I have a full featured computer in a tablet with multitouch.

UPDATE 6/30/2010: Since my last update I have spent most of the time on this laptop trying to keep it turned on. It is overheating and powering off after 30 minutes of use, every time I start it I get a screen during startup asking me to do hard drive tests, and it blue screens whenever I enable the fingerprint reader. So far I have not loaded any of my personal media files or documents due to these issues. I am only running google chat and surfing the web. FYI.

UPDATE 1/17/2011: My computer continues to blue screen during startup about once/twice per week. It has problems detecting the fan causing it to bluescreen and crash over this while running about 3 times per week and still cannot run the fingerprint reader. I've never been able to test it's speed running serious programs because I've never made it through a whole installation process. This one is better than the first one I received because at least it stays on sometimes, but still... can we say buyer's remorse? I'm dumping this brick of plastic as soon as I find something to replace it.

Very Nice But Not a Full PC or Mac Replacement

The Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook shares the distinction of being the first commercial Chromebook with another model by Samsung. The Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook will sell for $349 while the Samsung model will sell for $429 (Wi-Fi) and $499 (Wi-Fi and 3G capable). I have been testing the CR-48 Chromebook for the last five months. During this time I have come to see the positives and the negatives of this device. The Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook will feature an updated Intel Atom processor which should function quite nicely.

I do think that most people will be happy with this device as long as they understand a couple of things:

1. This will not replace your Windows or Mac machine completely. If you use any programs like Photoshop, then you will still have the need for your PC or Mac.

2. You are probably better off buying the Wi-Fi version and using your smart phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot or buying a Wi-Fi Hotspot from a provider like Verizon or Sprint. That way you can use the web on multiple devices instead of just paying for 3G access on your Chromebook.

Here are some Pros and Cons to consider:

Pros

1. Lightweight
2. Extremely long battery life (I typically charge mine every other day)
3. Pretty fast. On the web I find that the Chromebook loads up really fast.
4. Angry Birds - Yeah, they have added an Angry Birds Chrome web app that lets you play Angry Birds.
5. Sandboxing - You can Google this, but just think of it as a added level of web security.
6. Saving on the Cloud - All your files, etc. are linked to the cloud so you are not having to back up your laptop regularly.
7. Regular updates. Google releases updates to Chrome OS about every 2-3 weeks keeping it stable and secure.
8. HDMI output. This is a nice addition for those who will use this on the road or at a friend's house.
9. Netflix, Hulu, and other video streaming sites are supported finally (they were not in the beta test of the CR-48).
10. Supports music streaming from Amazon Cloud service, Google Music, Pandora, etc.

Cons (or possibly just some Considerations)

1. It runs on Chrome OS only. You can't load Windows or Mac based programs. For a lot of people this means they still need their Mac or PC. This is especially true if you run programs like Photoshop. I use Photoshop and Lightroom often. However, I use my Chromebook for just about everything else. This could be an issue for some, but I still wouldn't give up my Chromebook.
2. Cost might be a little high for some. Since this doesn't replace your PC or Mac completely, this price point is near what a tablet might cost (iPad or Xoom?). Personally, I love the form factor and the fact that I have a full keyboard for working rather than a touch screen on a tablet and would choose this over an equally priced tablet. But I figured I would point this out.
3. Early adopting. There is always a chance that the kinks are still being worked out. With Google, I'm pretty sure this won't be the case. My experience with the CR-48 has been great, with regular revisions every few weeks from Google even in the beta phase. Probably not going to be an issue, but again, worth pointing out.
4. No optical drive. You cannot play CDs or DVDs on this device. You must use the USB port or SD card slot. With Netflix, Hulu, and many other options, this is quickly becoming a non-issue. Additionally with being able to store so much to the cloud and USB/SDHC storage, optical storage is not really necessary as much as it used to be. That said, it is a change you have to get used to.

Well, I can easily say that after trying this out for the last few months, I will definitely be buying another when the time comes.

Chrome OS Review

I've been using one of the laptops that Google distributed last year in order to test Chrome OS. As the idea behind Chromebooks is new to some, I thought I'd focus on the operating system, though I've covered the hardware to a point.
I'll try to make this in-depth without it being too technical.

If you're looking for a quick idea of whether or not this is for you, jump to the bottom and read the summary.

The Concept

The premise on which Chrome OS is based is that almost everything you do when you use your computer happens in your browser, so Google have built a system that makes that experience as fast, as simple and as secure as they can. That simplicity also leads to an 8-hour battery life, which very few laptops can offer.
This simpler approach means that you don't have to deal with software updates(with one exception, see below) or worry about anti-virus software.
This also means all of your files and media is stored on other computers, on the internet. Some people aren't ready for that and if you're not, Chromebooks aren't for you.

Applications and Limitations

As you might imagine, just the web means no Windows, Mac or other typical software applications. Because of this, there's no CD or DVD drive in a Chromebook.
Though `just the web' may sound extremely-limiting, you can do a lot in your browser; multimedia editing(including video), as well as voice and video chat is all entirely possible on a Chromebook, as is the creation and editing of documents, spreadsheets and presentations. This software is available all over the web and there's a selection of useful tools to be found in the Chrome Web Store, with free and paid solutions.
That said, you can just type in a web address or search as you would normally to find a helpful website. As an example, Google, Zoho and Microsoft all offer web-based office suites, some of those are free and some paid.

Setup

Setting up a Chromebook is as simple as turning it on, putting in your Wi-Fi connection details and logging in.
If there's a new version of the operating system(as there was when I set my machine up) it will download that before you can continue. This may seem odd, as the idea is to make updates invisible to you, but Chromebooks check for updates the first time they're run in case something in that update changes something key, like the introduction process for new users.
Once the laptop has checked for updates, it reboots and you login. You're then shown how to do various things with the click-able touchpad, such as scrolling and right-clicking.

Speed

After the first time it's turned on Chromebooks are designed to be very fast. In my experience, that means booting up in around 9 seconds from off, whether that means the power button being pressed or the lid being lifted. If you close the lid for a while but leave the machine on, it should resume instantly.

Security

Whilst not being able to install traditional software can seem restrictive, it also has a huge benefit: no more anti-virus software.
Viruses are so common on Windows(and lately the Mac operating system, OS X) because the more software that's installed, the more potential vulnerabilities there are to exploit.

Because the Chromebook knows what software should be installed, it can keep a copy in an encrypted area of the hard drive. Each time you turn the machine on, it checks to see if anything unathorised has changed in the software. If it has, that encrypted copy overwrites everything and any updates will be installed when you connect to the internet.
No system is 100% secure, but this method(called verified boot) makes it much harder to compromise your machine.

Privacy and Google

Some users don't like the idea of being dependent on any large company for their computing needs. So, does a Chromebook make you reliant upon Google?
In short, no. Whilst Google does encourage you to log in to a Chromebook with your Google account, you can log in under Guest mode. Whilst using Guest mode, nothing you do is saved on the machine, you don't need to log in to a Google service and you're free to use any web-based service you choose. Google is currently working on other login methods.
However, should you choose to login using your Google account(as I do and most users ultimately will) your settings and bookmarks can be saved, just as they are in for the Chrome browser.

Files and Devices

A key thing when using a system like this is being able to use files people email you and external hardware, just like you would on a Windows PC or a Mac.
If someone emails you a picture, for instance, you can download that file and directly upload it to Picasa Web Albums, Google's photo hosting site. This is called a file handler(think of it like you would a piece of software that opens certain files in Windows) and Google has released tools for companies to do similar things with different file types. For example, Google Docs will soon be able to upload Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentations directly to your account, without needing to go to the web address of the service.

I've tried various hardware with my test laptop. All have worked well.
Inserting a usb thumb drive or plugging in an external hard drive will make a Chromebook scan it for files it can play(there's a built-in media player) and plugging in a camera will show you the pictures on it. I've also tried an external webcam, microphone, keyboard and mouse and my Android phone. All worked as I expected.

Off-line Access

Chrome OS is great when you have internet access, but what about when you don't have internet access? Many(but by no means all, yet) web sites can work off-line and then upload your game progress or document when you next connect. This functionality is coming soon(this summer, according to Google) to Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Some of the applications that currently function off-line include the NY Times, Huffington Post and Angry Birds.

Hardware and Pricing

Those who dislike Chromebooks often bring up netbooks. A netbook is a small, cheap laptop which almost always has low-quality, slow hardware. This results in a poor experience, as they typically run Windows and because of their cheap hardware, can't provide the resources Windows needs to run at its best. On top of that, Windows can't offer the security that a Chromebook does, can't boot as quickly and very rarely will you find any laptop that run for 8 hours on a single charge.
Right now, Google has only 2 partners who are making Chromebooks. That lack of competition keeps prices higher than they likely will ultimately reach.

My experience with the test machine Google distributed(called the Cr-48) from a hardware perspective has been very positive; my Windows machine boots in 1 minute 22 seconds and my Cr-48 is at the login screen in just under 10 seconds. Depending upon the task, I've experienced between 8 and 10 hours of use per charge.
It's similar to the machines you can buy in that it has the same quantity of memory and storage and a similar sized(though not as hi-quality, I'd imagine) screen. The major difference is that the Cr-48 has a single-core processor, whereas the official Chromebooks use a dual-core chip, making them better able to handle more intensive tasks, such as video playback. The Acer Chromebook has slightly less battery capacity, offering 6 hours of use per charge instead of 8. That said, the Acer models have a replaceable battery, allowing you to take a spare with you or replace it if it fails before you buy a new laptop.

Summary

To put it simply, Chromebooks are fantastic if you use only the web or spend almost all of your time on the web; sub-10 second boot, great security and great battery life.
If you don't or don't have internet access most of the time, these aren't for you just yet.

It works great

I started with a CR-48, and now I have the Acer AC700. While I have several systems, including tablets, PCs, Macs, iPads, etc, I really like using the clam-shell form factor. So I prefer to use the AC700 rather than a tablet, because the AC700 gives you instant-on access like most tablets, but also provides the keyboard. If your use-cases consist of browsing, streaming media, word processing, spread sheet use, social networking, skype, etc. - This machine will do everything you need.

If you use photoshop or other applications that require processing power, then this will not replace a widows or OSX machine. I like the look of the Acer more than the Samsung, and I like the price better too.
