Everybody knows that building good credit is a necessary part of life. Most understand the basics: develop a history, increase your credit line, and don’t become delinquent on payments. What few people know, is that there are a number of factors that can count against you, even if you’re a regularly paying consumer. One of the easiest ways to conceptualize your score and understand how you improve is by using MyFICO.com.

Most of large banks rely on the FICO score to base the majority of their lending decisions. Potentially, a 100 point difference in scores could mean thousands of dollars in the long run. It’s important to recognize that you have the power.

Scores generally range from 300 to 850 with the lower end of the spectrum nearly impossible to secure credit due to complications. On the other end of the spectrum, 850 represents the most secure person a bank could lend to. You want to be there. At 850, nearly any credit card you want can be yours — permitting a reasonable income. Having this can mean serious rewards in your daily credit card use, too.

This is one of the most fundamental components to saving money in the long run. Getting the most updated credit score is best done at the source: MyFICO.com. Regularly, a basic report costs $19.95. I encourage you to take advantage of some online coupons that’ll save you around 15 percent. First, Google search: “MyFICO Coupon.” Second, if you are having trouble finding one, this should work for a while: “Unionplus.”

Go to the source and figure out how you can improve your credit score. But do it before you have the large purchase to make. MyFICO will succinctly dispel the common myths and simultaneously give you path to improve your score.

Opening up my new, shiny Chase Sapphire card, I feel like a valued member. Underneath the Visa logo, it says, “Signature.” My elitism is tempered by the stark realization that everyone and their mother — over 21 — has probably been offered this card. Nonetheless, I’m excited to enjoy the benefits of membership.

Visa Signature service is advertised as a competitor to American Express. AMEX’s platinum and centurion concierges are famous for making the improbable happen. Last minute dinner reservations? No problem. But AMEX’s benefits come from a $450 or $2500 annual fee for the platinum and centurion cards, respectively. As a coupon clipping save-aholic, I’m not interested in any sort of initiation that may later force cognitive dissonance to realize enjoyment.

The Signature service includes a wealth of benefits including: Travel Cancellation Insurance, Lost Baggage Insurance, etc. This is most certainly an upgraded card, when compared to similar reward cards. The first day I got the card, I called my concierge to coordinate dates and book a deal at Wynn Resorts while seeing Penn & Teller. Also, since I was planning on a couple day stay, I asked for a complete iteniery of affordable adventures. One day later, I received an email informing me of a problem — Penn & Teller were dark for much of May. Furthermore, that something was wrong with their booking system — they’d need to get back to me in regards to Wynn availability.

A couple days afterwards, a full list of rates and dates were attached. It had been about four days, and I was still waiting for the itinerary. I emailed to check in, and a few hours later received a detailed, multiple page list.

But even on the first day of having the card, I found the limits. Asking for subscription list companies — websites that could manage email lists for free/cheap — the polite attendant said that wasn’t something she could do. Anything business related was out of the scope. Strange, considering they’ll find products in stores — anywhere in the world — but not complete a simple online search.

My love for the service was cinched after a dinner reservation they made. In Fort Collins, CO, graduation weekend is right around the corner. May 14th represents one of the busiest days for local restaurants. Unfortunately, my favorite was booked full — two months before. I was discouraged, but thought there could be hope by calling my concierge. In late April, now with the card, I figured there could be a chance. I double checked OpenTable.com — nothing.

When the concierge checked (after regular business hours), he said there was nothing. It bothered me. I can make that same check online. I kindly asked if he could check in the next day after calling. Mystically, magically, and miraculously, I received yet another email that next afternoon — a reservation confirmation for 6PM at the most sought after restaurant on the busiest day of the year.

I don’t know how they did it. I’m hooked and will be a staunch user and supporter of their services from now on. I’m off to plan a European vacation with my concierge!

The ubiquitous flash drive is soon to be a historical, collector’s item. As flash memory stays expensive due to demand from iPods, flash drives, and other ultra portable storage, there’s an increasing shift to online storage. Between security concerns and accessibility, reasonable concerns over storing your precious documents online are justified. Likewise, some online tools are pricey and limited.

It’s important to understand what devices will be able to access this cloud application. Most likely, you have a cell phone (smartphone), laptop, and possibly even a desktop. As a student or somebody that frequently uses public computers, the data must be easy to backup and access from all outlets. And following in this site’s motto, let’s be financially savvy and find a free tool — shall we?

Dropbox (2 GB Free)
The best of the best. This website offers a fully-integrated application that works on Mac and Windows computers to keep all of your precious files backed up without any afterthought. Just install the program, drag the files to the Dropbox folder, and you’re off! This tool couldn’t be any easier and uses advanced 256-bit encryption to protect those files. Using this banking-standard form of encryption should give you piece of mind. On top of that, if you’re internet is down, you’ll still have access to your files. One copy is left on your hard drive and the other is synced to the cloud. If you have MP4 video, sometimes they will play directly in your browser when clicking the file on Dropbox. This is a tremendous plus if you don’t want to lug around your DVD collection. While they start out with only 2 GB free, there are a variety of free opportunities to quickly increase your limits. If you’re a new user, click here and use my referral link to get an extra 500 MB: http://db.tt/0zVW4Ot.

Google Docs (1 GB Free)
If you’re an avid Googler you already know everything that Google Docs has to offer. While only giving a skimpy, minuscule 1 GB of free storage, Google Docs is by far the best collaboration software out there. Users can easily share documents, presentations, and spreadsheets among friends. Instead of the traditional email attachment, Google Docs keeps the file on their servers and shared access makes users go online to see the file. This collaboration is easy, timely, and without a number of things to delete shortly afterwards. If you’re working on a group project that culminates in a PowerPoint presentation, head over to Google Docs and share the burden with your partners. If you’ve been living under a rock: docs.google.com.

Amazon Cloud Drive (5 GB Free)
As with each of the preceding tools, Amazon Cloud Drive has its own place on the top of the list. Recently released this year, the Amazon Cloud Drive enables amazing cloud music capabilities. If you’re not stuck on iTunes, check out the Amazon Cloud Drive. You simply upload your music to Amazon’s secure servers and no matter where you are you can listen to your music (assuming you have an internet connection). The cloud drive comes with a counterpart for Android phones: Amazon MP3. Just download that app from the Android Market, login, and you can rock out to your music in seconds. This storage is incredibly quick and doesn’t suffer from lag whatsoever in normal signal conditions. Whether you’re away from your home computer or want to go from a run, Amazon’s Cloud Drive is an important part of the amalgamation of online storage. Check out the cloud drive at: Amazon.com.

If you’re still hesitant about uploading your documents to the cloud, ask yourself one important question: What if you lose your flash drive? Unfortunately, if you lose that precious little drive, your files may be gone, public, and unsecured. Syncing to the cloud protects your files behind heavy encryption. If you’re still worried, you can always pre-encrypt your files with a Zip creation program and then upload. For the things that must survive — no matter fire, water, and/or natural disaster — back things up! It’ll save you time and money in the end.

Now, after setting up these three accounts, you should have 8 plus GB of new storage.

In the ever-evolving credit market, American Express has surprised many by continuing their profitable success with charge cards. These fanciful cards are adorned by many, and questioned by few. In general, American Express cards are an unnecessary luxury. Possibly signaling weakness in applications, the Platinum card is now being heavily incentivized. With 50,000 bonus points, the AMEX is hoping you’ll be hooked (but I’d be remiss not to mention the heavy point devaluation for everything but airfare).

Most likely in an effort to compete, American Express has built in more benefits to the $450 behemoth. Now, consumers can look forward to a $200 Airline Credit (to be used with incidental fees like baggage, ticket changes, etc.), 20 percent travel bonus when using points to purchase travel, and even the Global Entry (globalentry.gov) program that assists your speed through United States borders. (See Platinum benefits package)

For the frequent traveler, this card has just gone through an incredible upgrade. If you’re stuck on a remote island and are severely injured, this card will arrange medical evacuation — up to a helicopter. While impressive, it’s overkill. What are the chances that in that super remote area needing a helicopter to get in that you’ll have cellular signal? Fat chance.

This is one of the most attractive cards on the market right now. The $450 annual fee must be carefully weighed before decisions are made. If you travel more days than not, this card will come handy. Heck, if you travel that much you’ll appreciate the club and lounge access in nearly every major airport. If you don’t fit this bill, than the Platinum card is like lighting your money on fire.

Note: Unlike most financial sites, this post does not feature affiliate links and I do not benefit from decisions made.

In this time of great disparity and difficulty in paying the bills, some squander hard earned dollars when they could just be using an online coupon. In our inaugural post for the new website, we’ll be showing you how to save bundles on your favorite sites. From Amazon.com to Urban Outfitters, just enter a simple code and get ready to save!

Amazon.com: Subscribe & Save (~15 percent)
For those of you who like the wonderful convenience of Amazon.com’s door-to-door shipping, the easiest way to save is by taking advantage of the “Subscribe & Save” feature. By taking advantage, consumers can regularly save 15 percent on their orders. The downside? You’re automatically signed up to receive more on an interval from 1 to 6 months. The good news is that you cancel — without any charge — at any point. So you want that Black Lipton tea delivered to your door in a 6-pack? No problem, sign up and drop the program by going to your account online. It’s as simple as that. Students: Sign up for free Amazon Prime Two-Day Shipping.

Use online coupon aggregation services
Online outlets constantly have online coupons available to incentivize purchasing there instead of brick and mortar stores. Even the largest retailers such as Urban Outfitters and Kohl’s offering free shipping codes and sometimes even 15 percent off. One of the best — albeit spammy — is RetailMeNot.com.

Email companies to ask if they may have an online promotion/coupon
This certainly takes the most of your own time, but it can pay off. Even though you may not be able to find a coupon for a particular online store, sending an email to the customer service at these stores may be insightful. First, if there’s a hidden coupon they may give it to. Second, if there’s one you missed (like signing up for a mailing list) they’ll direct you to it. Third, customer service reps may be inclined to tell you when an upcoming sale is coming or a future coupon. Just make sure to say thank you to them!

Unfortunately, there are some companies that refuse to accept coupons. Zappos.com is one of the most popular online shoe shopping companies. And yet, they make no compromises when it comes to coupons (in fact, they have a no coupon policy).

Good luck — go forth and save!

Back in November 2009, we created a top 5 list of Android apps for the Motorola Droid. Now, there’s an updated list of the top 5 Android apps that’ll save you money and time.

Please leave comments below and stay tuned for more savers soon! Let us know if you have any suggestions for the list.

Google Voice
This was the top of the list last time, and still is. Google Voice is by far the easiest way to save money on your phone bills and time. Since the original Top 5 list, Google Voice has only become better. Offering voicemail transcription that continues to improve, unlimited and free text messaging, and free calls in Gmail (VOIP), this application is a must have. Nowadays, you can seamlessly keep your accustomed, old number and port it to Google Voice. This enables you to have all the benefits without the hassle of a new number. While it’s only available in the US, this is great for travelers. Don’t have a cell phone? Out of the country? Just create a Google Voice number and you can have a virtual voice mailbox that you can access anywhere there’s internet. To top it off, the application gives you great international rates if you’d like to use your phone. Download it today.

Mint.com
Wondering about your account balances? How about your stock portfolio? Mint.com offers one of the most complete and secure websites/apps for managing your finances. If you have multiple accounts over a variety of banks, this will seriously ease your burden. While limited in comparison to the desktop version, the Mint.com app for Android is another hit. With its personal access code (user-created for account protection), total cash and credit debt, budgeting, and sophisticated alert system, the Mint.com goes above and beyond the Quicken’s of yesteryear. While it can be scary linking all of your personal banking details to the cloud, Mint.com’s heavy security and privacy policy provide a strong confidence in their system. Plus, Mint.com is from the makers of the popular tax preparation software TurboTax (Intuit). Download it today.

Dropbox/Google Docs
This one is a bit of a tie. Ironically, Google just announced a Google Docs application for Android today (4/27/11). This application offers editing, sharing, and viewing features that were seriously lacking. Meanwhile, Dropbox offers an advanced backup and storage tool for home desktops. Dropbox’s ability to sync in the background on Mac and Windows with your native folders is truly incredible. The combination of these two services makes living on the web all the more possible. If you ever forget a file on your computer, just make sure you’ve synced it to your Dropbox account and/or upload it to Google Docs. Then, no matter where you are, you can send, share, and show your latest creations. Download Dropbox and Google Docs today.

Al Jazeera LIVE
The network that America won’t accept. Al Jazeera is one of the most highly regarded international sources for news in the world. Known for its incredible coverage of the middle east and top interviews, Al Jazeera is trying to bring its channel to the United States. Until it is part of your everyday basic cable choices, Al Jazeera is offering a free, streaming application for your Android (and iPhone) devices. With a live streaming application in English or Arabic, this application is the perfect way to digest the top news stories from around the world wherever you are. Download it today.

Google Maps
Yes, this comes with Android phone by default. Yes, you know all about it. But the really amazing feature is the navigation by GPS. This fully featured, turn-by-turn navigation immerses drivers/bikers/walkers into a satellite image of the road ahead. Uniquely Google, if you’re searching for directions on your desktop, you can even send it to Android phones by using the Google Chrome to Phone Extension. Unlike its main competitor — Apple’s iPhone — this navigation application comes with every device for free. GPS apps on the iPhone are regularly around $10-30. And like so many Google products, this one will get better with time. Download it today.
