Medical lasers are a multibillion-dollar global industry. Lasers are used in a wide range of medical applications, from cosmetic procedures to diagnosis and therapy.

The global recession of 2008 and 2009 had a significant negative impact on the market for medical lasers. Much of the demand for medical lasers comes from elective procedures such as laser-assisted eye surgery, which many consumers postponed as they tightened their belts in response to the recession.

Somewhat paradoxically, the market for lasers used in certain minimally invasive cosmetic surgical procedures (e.g., hair restoration, photo-rejuvenation with intense pulsed light, and laser body contouring) held up relatively well in the recession. Meanwhile, the market for lasers used in surgical applications that cannot wait until the economy turns around remained comparatively strong.

The longer-term outlook for the medical laser market is much better. Indeed, demand may experience a “bump” as the economy improves and consumers who have postponed elective laser procedures during the recession decide to have them.

Another force for possible change in the medical laser market is the new U.S. health care law that was enacted in 2010. The law imposed a 5% excise tax on elective cosmetic surgical procedures. When it does go into effect, this tax could reduce the demand for such procedures and by extension the market for medical lasers used in cosmetic procedures.

Meanwhile, medical laser technology is continuing to evolve. New laser sources with potential medical applications include fiber lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and organic LEDs (OLEDs). Plastic foils as surface emitters could become important as an irradiation source in photo-dynamic therapy (PDT). In addition to new laser sources, the development of new applicators and tool holders will continue to widen the range of applications for existing types of lasers. Finally, the spread of new laser applications such as nanosurgery, OCT, and sophisticated fluorescence microscopy will stimulate the growth of the medical laser market.

Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary study involving biology, medicine, and engineering to create products and devices that will improve or replace biological functions and organs. The first experiments in tissue engineering date back to the 1960s. More than a decade ago, the industry introduced the first FDA-approved, tissue-engineered commercial product-artificial skin substitute.

Although tissue engineering has enormous commercial potential, it seems that this market develops at a very slow pace. After the introduction of skin substitutes and cartilage regeneration products in the last decade or so, not much progress has been made in the industry. Moreover, some of the products have been discontinued. One of the main reasons for this slow development is the biological complexity of growing organs and tissue replacements. In addition, current technologies are not efficient enough to make these products cost-effective alternatives.

Overall, the tissue engineering market is a heterogeneous industry and can be divided into number of subsectors. Skin substitutes are a relatively developed segment, while tissue-engineered products for the nervous system comprise a sector that is still in a preliminary stage. Recent developments in regeneration research, especially stem cell research, give hope that new scientific breakthroughs will lead to innovative products.

In summary, this report will highlight the main segments of the tissue engineering and regeneration industry, its major market participants, and current and future market trends. The report will also highlight specific geographical regions that have individual market characteristics. Drivers and challenges in each sector of this industry will be discussed in detail, including forecasts for the next 5 years.

This market research report focuses on embedded technology, including both embedded hardware and embedded software. The report forecasts the market for embedded technology through 2015 by considering macroeconomic factors and dynamics of the markets for various end products. It also provides measurement and analysis of major market segments and highlights major players and emerging trends affecting the market.

This research builds upon previously a published report in 2009. The market dynamics have changed since that time, and several new devices have emerged in the market. “Hot” technologies in 2009 such as the MP3 player are becoming outdated and newer technologies such as smartphones and tablets are making headway into everyday life.

A new open-source operating system provided by Google, “Android,” has generated widespread interest in the worldwide community, and several companies have planned to enhance or upgrade their devices to Android at some point.

Semiconductor geometry has continued to shrink but still has not reached its physical limits just yet. The erosion in prices of semiconductor chips has continued, but due to continued demand, the market has continued to expand.

We’ve considered all these factors in preparing the market analysis and forecast in subsequent sections.

“Thermal management” is the term used to describe the array of material technologies and problem-solving design tools that systems manufacturers apply to regulate the unwanted heat caused by the normal functioning of an electronic system. Thermal management technologies are an important part of the electronics industry’s drive to develop ever higher-performance applications.

This focused document profiles the top 10 companies of this industry, and updates the emerging and potentially transformative technologies connected to the field. The definition of the industry is broadened beyond purely electronic cooling for this report, and includes overlapping green energy opportunities, as there is evident movement toward these high potential areas.

In 2011, the world thermal management market sector is valued at about $8 billion. Thermal management hardware (e.g., fans and blowers, heat sinks, etc.) accounts for about 84% of the total thermal management market. The other main thermal management product segments (software, interface materials, and substrates) each account for between 4% and 6% of the market.

For thermal management companies, the cost of doing business has increased. Aluminum and copper are traditional heat sink materials, and nickel and steel are also employed (as nickel is used for both plating and in the formulation of stainless steel, which is commonly used on heat sink installation hardware such as screws, springs, round wire clips and flat band clips). Over the past few years, prices have risen steeply for these materials. Companies have attempted to absorb the increasing prices of materials in a bid to remain cost competitive, but have recently been forced to pass on higher costs to their customers. This is, in part, also due to rising labor costs. In China minimum wages have increased 60% since 2008, plus additional labor laws have dramatically increased costs for overtime, benefits, housing, meals, etc. This means that direct labor rates increased and the overhead rates applied to direct labor rates, have risen.

Statistics may vary by different sources but cars produced worldwide in 2010 (latest data available) number about 51 million. To this add the millions of vehicles already on the roads. Back in 2007, the SUV lead with 43% of a three segment market. Hybrids have remained more or less constant since 2008 with 24 to 29% of the market. According to HighBeam Research, through 2011 the EV had 61% of its market sector.

Despite relatively modest sales projections for EVs for the next 15 years, automotive executives believe that some 83% of automakers will increase investment in electric motor production. Over 81% of the automakers believe investment in battery technology will rise. Approximately 65% of the automakers predict increased investment in fuel cell technology for automobiles.

Hybrid car statistics show that over 200,000 hybrid cars have been sold in the U.S in 2010. Nearly every production hybrid on the road today uses a power train combination that consists of a gasoline engine (ICE) and an electric motor, which is connected to a nickel-metal hydride battery. This may make all hybrids seem similar, but each of them takes a different approach with their hybrid technology.
