<p>Part of any smart marketing plan is creating visibilty. Visibility means that you put yourself in front of an audience who has the potential to become a customer or client.</p>
<p>In the stone age of marketing, advertising, and publicity visibility meant buying ads on one of the traditional forms of media. With the advent of the internet and search engines that changed, and now entrepreneurs around the globe spend sleepless nights trying to achieve rank in the search engines.</p>
<p>Some business owners choose to pay for their clicks PPC. Unfortunately I have seen foolish people buy a click for their own brand. IF you have a clue at all your &#8220;brand&#8221; should show up on the first page of the major search engines. Others will buy the most riduculous terms which have no value in the click, except to the PPC program they are paying, because the traffic simply is without a clear target. This is akin to shooting arrows into the air and hoping they will fall on your enemy. Not the most productive or cost effective system.</p>
<p>I personally do not encourage clients to Pay Per Click. I feel it is a quick way to drive yourself into Chapter 11 status. The keywords that will truly drive you targeted traffic are costly, and if you are still learning which keywords to target you will get plenty of clicks (possibly) but your conversion rates will stink. So save the Pay Per Click money for the time being and spend time and money on something that will actually teach you what you need and want to know to get the right kind of targeted visitors to your website.</p>
<p>There are literally thousands of forums on the internet, and websites galore where you can spend hours reading and being advised by &#8220;experts&#8221; about how to get the rank you wand on search engines.  So if you have time and energy to kill, and don&#8217;t mind being non-income productive then hit the search engines and get busy searching for the answers.</p>

<p>For my own entertainment I often view the source code of websites just to see which keywords they are targeting. Once you learn a few things you&#8217;ll understand why it entertains me to see someone waste a keyword on something like &#8220;singer&#8221; if they&#8217;ve produced a website trying to promote their singing career.</p>
<p>Click over to Google.com and check this search out, <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;q=singer&amp;btnG=Google+Search" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview ('/outbound/www.google.com');">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;q=singer&amp;btnG=Google+Search</a> 157,000,000 that&#8217;s right one hundred and fifty seven MILLION possible sites for that search term. Now notice what has top rank. People and things NAMED Singer. The Singer sewing machine website for example. Now if you are a singer named Singer &#8230; than optimize away for that keyword.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at this search on Google, <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;q=wedding+singer+brooklyn" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview ('/outbound/www.google.com');">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;q=wedding+singer+brooklyn</a> that&#8217;s wedding singer brooklyn.</p>
<p>Targeting your keywords narrows the competition to only 177,000 sites. Huge difference right? You are also much more likely to get targeted traffic from people who want to hire a wedding singer in Brooklyn (if that&#8217;s what you are) than someone who wants a Singer Sewing Machine.</p>
<p>Since 60% of all targeted traffic comes from search engines you owe it to yourself and your business to learn as much as possible as cost effectively as possible.</p>

<p>This is perhaps one of my greatest pet-peeves in the online business world.</p>
<p>Recently I signed up for some free products on a JV giveaway. These are great by the way, but I&#8217;ll post about those at another time.</p>
<p>The dreaded 404 error is about as annoying as a BSOD. I took the time to sign up for a promotion, which in theory means I want information, right?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a scenario of how not to do business online</p>
<p>Ifill in the information request form. I reply to the double-optin email and confirm my interest in you and your offering. I go to your site, I attempt to download your product which you have taken the time to promote in at least one Joint Venture Giveaway.</p>
<p>I am taken to the download page following my confirmation of interest.</p>
<p>I click the link to download the file that I have now jumped through flaming hoops to receive, and what am I presented with after all this effort? A 404 error. The file cannot be found. So attempting to use your very helpful and visibly placed helpdesk link I click it and &#8230; another 404 error.</p>
<p>I exit your site and never return, and I unsubscribe from your list closing the door of opportunity you have taken so much time to open.</p>
<p>What am I to conclude?</p>
<ol>
<li>You are clueless.</li>
<li>You are playing at being an online merchant but don&#8217;t put the time or energy into error checking.</li>
<li>You are rushing to make money, and your greed has kept you from being concerned about retaining me or convincing me to hand you my hard earned money.</li>
<li>You are just starting out and haven&#8217;t learned that just one 404 error can make me go elsewhere in a quick click.</li>
<li>You believe my time is less valuable than your time.</li>
</ol>
<p>Any and all of those may be true. The point here is you will never know what I have assumed, and what action I have chosen to take.</p>
<p>Once in a great while you will get a visitor who has a heart and they will track down a working link that leads them to notify you of your 404 error so you don&#8217;t lose business, traffic, and the chance for sales and repeat visitors.</p>
<p>I am one of those people who will let you know most of the time. I have even gotten thank you notes from site owners for notifying them of errors on their site. Hell I&#8217;ve even gained a client or two by being helpful.</p>
<p>Today I am not feeling helpful. Today I am a dissatisfied visitor who will not return, and you will never know why I went away or unsubscribed from your list.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s my advice.</p>
<p>If you are going to take the time, money, and effort to build a site, find a free or cheap error checking program online and check your links.</p>
<p>Sign up for Google&#8217;s Webmaster Tools (free) and they will let you know what errors they find. That is assuming your created a sitemap and submitted it for them to crawl.</p>
<p>The bottom line here is this. IF you really want to do business online, then by all means before your put your pages live CHECK THEM. Getting a visitor to your site in the first place is time consuming. Letting a visitor go without making the most of their visit is business suicide.</p>

<p>Why is it so tricky? The rules change almost daily.</p>
<p>This week I found some tricks on my Squidoo lens for Bobbie Grei that helped me see things more clearly.</p>
<p>I mistakenly assumed that more tags and more diversity was better. WRONG, or at least it seems that way right now.</p>
<p>The day I created that lens I just tagged in Bobbie Grei and Bobbie Grei Music. The next time I worked on adding content to the lens I added hip hop singer, indie music, rock singer, pop singer. I thought that since those tags described her they&#8217;d help with rank for those terms. What I found was that by diluting the tags to other terms that really didn&#8217;t exist in the content or section tags on the lens I had diluted the relevance for the two most important tags, the first ones I had used.</p>
<p> Again thinking more was better I changed the subcategory titles to overload them with the term Bobbie Grei. Results from that were not helpful either. By overloading those two terms on the page I made it what one might call spammy for Google and the lens disappeared from it&#8217;s top rank position on Google. In fact it disappeared from Google completely in the course of just one day.</p>
<p>Because I am obsessive about checking rank I saw Google dropped the lens like a hot potato within one day of making those ill-guided changes and I reverted to the original and high ranking format I had originally and voila &#8230; bank on top.</p>
<p> Lessons learned from this experiment. More is not better and don&#8217;t be greedy. If you have a formula that is working, leave it alone. When it stops working do some investigating to see why.</p>
<ul>
<li>Analyze the sites the knocked you off the top and see what they are doing.</li>
<li>Compare that to what you have.</li>
<li>Visit search engine forums and find out if the search engine that now hates your site has made changes to their indexing rules.</li>
<li>Keep on top of your search ranking because if you don&#8217;t you&#8217;ll discover your bottom line disappeared with your rank, but it will be reflected in your bottom line.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t rely on search engines alone for your website or blog traffic. They are fickle ever changing creatures and if you put all your eggs in one basket you will regret it. </li>
</ul>
<p>I just read an article about something called Google Everflux. <p>This is a tremendous opportunity for anyone who is starting out in any field and who is just getting their name out to be able to have content added quickly to Google. If done right it can drive traffic to your website, myspace page, or any other form on online promotion you are using. Backlink all of your promotion sites together for even better potential for traffic.</p>

<p>Hubpages is unique in that it discourages excess self-promotion. They really want quality content, for which I applaud them.</p>
<p>So if you feel you have something of value to share on a subject, and you want to earn some income from sharing that knowledge then hubpages is a great place to start.</p>
<p>Today I signed up, have not yet created a hub of my own since I want to spend some time decided what I want to share, but I did look at other hubpages and found one in particular I think will give you a good idea of how powerful this site can be if you use it properly.</p>

<p>Gone are the days of promises to &#8220;get rich quick&#8221;. Here are the days of marketing ethically, honestly, and with integrity.</p>
<p>If you came into the internet marketing world in its infancy, you might have gotten away with hard sell tactics and &#8220;too good to be true&#8221; promises.</p>

<p>I say it&#8217;s about time we all considered the impact we have, even if it is on someone whose voice we will never hear, or whose face we will never see.</p>
<p>How many of you remember the early days of AOL when chat rooms were filled with angry people who needed a place to verbally attack a stranger, just to vent their frustrations in life without having to be responsible for their venting? And while that has nothing to do with internet marketing, or marketing in the brick and mortar world How you treat others does impact your bottom line in business and personal relationships.</p>
<p>Now there may be those who would disclaim this and offer examples of unethical businesses or business persons who have thrived and succeeded in conventionally measured terms. I ask you to consider at what cost their success came, and if you are willing to pay the piper for your own actions.<br />
