Is that why nobody is putting similar effort into thorium molten salt reactors? The basic tech was invented in the 1960s so you cannot get a broad own-the-category patent, and the fuel is something you can just dump in, rather than requiring fancy manufacturing.

I've got an article in the queue on that; TRISO solves the meltdown problem which is nice, but it does so at very high cost (not so nice) not only on the front end but also it radically increases reprocessing costs too since you then have to deconstruct the "pills" to get the waste out and reprocess it. This likely makes it impossible to economically do so and thus absent some sort of additional forced extraction it likely means this is a one-time-through thing which in fact increases the volume of high-level waste to be dealt with.

The hole it runs through wears over time and once it does the geartrain loses its alignment and binds. A simpler one would be a tariff based on the most expensive subpart made available as spare.

If there is a single part without spare that causes the whole unit to be scrapped, then the tariff is based on the whole unit.

On top of that, any importer needs to guarantee X years of spares, and if they decide to discontinue the spares availability, they need to publish the design parameter so third parties can provide them if it is good business (o they can provide them to an gov agency, or third party custodians in the US, and it is the agency that makes them available if the manufacturer fails to provide spares). That includes the logic and software of the electronic boards.

If they have a trade secret on those parts that they don't want to publish, then keep making them available as spares beyond 10 years.

I have a 2-story with mostly hardwood floors, and not much in the way of rugs or unnecessary obstacles. This is about optimum. It does ok in the one room I have carpet, but I run it on max power and let it make two passes. In a house with more carpet, I don't think it would be as effective. The cost of consumables is in the noise.

There is the obsolescence issue with solar panels. If you have a solar array that is more then 3 years old and you have one panel fail, you may need to replace all of them because the panels you have are likely not manufactured any more, newer panels put out more DC voltage than the older panels, and/or some are are actually larger and won't fit into the space in the array.

LED lights are another issue. Like all electronics they work on a bathtub curve. Washers and dryers, ovens and fridges, have problems with the electronic control boards. Why? As far as I can tell, they use cheap relays, and they solder the relays to the circuit board. Either the relays or the high current board traces and solder joints fail.

If they had good relays with wire tabs for the high current connections, those would be more reliable, and could be replaced without replacing the circuit board. Possibly better would be to use triacs with proper snubbers for power control, although soldering them to a board could still create problems.

I have some Cree. Nice lights. A 60 watt GE bulb next to a Cree, you can't tell the difference. So, yeah Mom, I don't care if you leave your bedroom lights on. Because 20 watts vs 120 watts.

I have plenty of Phillips 75 watt flood equivalents.

The last big purchase of bulbs was to replace the Phillips floods in the living room tracks with their variety that changes color as dimmed. Like incandescent bulbs change color. I'm very very happy with them. They "look right".

Other stuff, I fix. Burner on the range, no problem. The dryer's automatic dry setting stopped working. A $15 part from eBay. The washing machine drips water? A new water valve is like $35 and some time.

Ditto for the fridge. I thought the defrost heater failed. Bought one. Looked at how to install it and well, ain't happening. The one thing of EXTREME interest is the charging rates and the temperature range. They charged them at rates and at temperatures that would have immediately cooked a Lion cell. Then they did it over and over and got good results every time.

A slow trickle charge and keeping it cool does more for longevity than anything else. Temperature and current are killers to battery life.

Used to have tractors that were OEM set up with two 6 volt batteries in series to give 12 volts. One on each side of the cab. Involved multiple cables and one that passed under the cab of the tractor that was prone to issues with heat and abrasion and could be a real fire hazard. Despite religiously keeping connections clean and tight the right side one would inevitable arc the clamp on the end of the crossover cable and eventually ruin it. Then one battery would usually go bad before the other and to keep things balanced you needed to buy a pair. We need standardized testing, in English, for anyone who wants in on the basis of a technical skill. And that should only be allowed where there is a legit shortage, not just because it's cheaper.

We probably cannot fix this retroactively. That would require tests and hearings for each individual case, and the media would be full of sad stories. Public will would never hold out.

If people start discriminating in their choice of professionals (one sort of discrimination that they cannot sue you for) then a lot of the fake degree holders will exit. Oh look, a robot house cleaner. The motion control is impressive. I want to know what is the ratio of autonomous to teleoperation? The demo video looks like teleoperation to me. There are a lot of the food delivery robots, boxes on wheels, in Los Angeles. I often see them just sitting there stopped. Pretty sure that is also mostly teleoperation, because they are very slow to cross streets. There was a robot cleaner in WalMart, and it stopped, beeped, and required a human to come and reset it.

This morning, my wife reminded me that the border collie lab mix was 85 pounds. It was also tall dog who could move and all that too, so he could really generate some power.

Our current dog dog is not really built to run distance. She sprints like mad after whatever she decides of the backyard critters that is harassing her, such as chimunks and squirrels...

She has yet to catch a squirrel, the chipmunks went caught, get licked to death... if she finds baby bunnies in the garden, they go down like bon bons.

Fifty percent rotweller, twenty five percent shepherd, and twenty five percent super mutt, which I imagine, includes a smaller dog, as she is only 65 pounds. If she was 85 pounds, I don't know if I could handle her during the moments of her insane "I must chase this" varmint frenzy... she's generally trained, but there are limits to even a good dog listening

As far as the US, the major cities are vulnerable. Lose electrical power and you lose all utilities. Easier to shut things down and keep them down than to keep everything running.
