Malaysian Firm Buys Friendster For US$100m

A Malaysian company has acquired US social netwoking site Friendster for a reported US$100m. The buyer, MOL Global Pte Ltd, is a Malaysian online payments provider.

Under the terms of that deal, MOL will provide a payment platform for Friendster's e-commerce services, Friendster Wallet and Friendster Gift Shop, where users can buy virtual gifts for friends, according to a report by news portal Malaysian Mirror.

The report says Friendster Wallet will allow users to make purchases at the online Gift Shop using virtual currency. Users buy the virtual currency, called Friendster Coins, using top-up cards sold at physical shops, such as convenience stores.

In a statement on Thursday, MOL president and chief executive officer Ganesh Kumar Bangah said:

"The merger with Friendster will continue to transform the social networking industry, combining a highly intuitive and successful social media site and online marketing channel with an integrated payment platform and content network which includes games, goods, gifts, music and video."

Friendster was an early player in the social networking scene on the Internet and became very popular in the Southeast Asia market although it has lost ground in most major markets such as in the US and Europe where Facebook and MySpace share the major part of the market.

According to a survey in August, Friendster had 20 million active users from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. About 90 percent of its traffic comes from Asia.

Still on the Malaysian front...

PayPal, a subsidiary of eBay Inc, has expanded its services in Malaysia with the introduction of support for payments in Malaysian ringgit and a new bank withdrawal feature that enables members to transfer money from their PayPal account directly to a Malaysian bank account, Malaysian Insider cited a Bernama report.

I did a transaction from my PayPal account to a Malaysian bank account and the money came through without a hitch after about four days.

PayPal charge RM3.00 for the transaction which is very much less than the US$5 they charge if you were to do the transaction through your credit card or debit card.

Golf Superstar's Growing List of Birdies

Is the Tiger's tail between the legs as more birdies come out of the Woods-work to sing their tunes? It looks like a hole-in-one is not enough for a man like Tiger Woods.
At latest count, according to the New York Post on Monday, the number has hit nine...and counting.
The latest tweet, it seems, is a 26-year-old ex-waitress in Orlando, Fla., who claims she has had nearly a two-year affair with the golf superstar.
The crouching Tiger drama appears to be picking up pace although Woods had pleaded on his website that personal privacy is an inherent right of an individual, notwithstanding that he is the world's No. 1 golfer and makes a few billion bucks for his sweat on the greens and advertisement endorsements.
Earlier, seven of the ace golfer's birdies have been identified. See here.
According to the racy, spicy, juicy London Sun tabloid, No. 7 is alleged to be a 36-year-old pornstar from Los Angeles who claimed to be his mistress.
The eighth birdie is believed to be a sexy British TV presenter. She's still trying to remain anonymous.
As we all know by now, "mistress No. 6" has been identified as Cori Rist, 31, whom Woods met in a New York nightclub last year.
While the Tiger Woods camp has neither deny nor confirm these sightings, the attention-seeking mistresses are having a field day.
As we remain riveted to a seemingly developing saga about who's next on the Woody pecking order, we'll stop here for a while, take a breath, and assume the rest is history.
We might have lost count!

Update - Dec 7, 2009: Tiger Woods' mother-in-law is rushed to the hospital amidst rumors of more affairs

Things are not getting any better lately for the world's richest sportsman Tiger Woods. He has just announced that he's pulling out of the Chevron World Challenge in California, according to his website.

Apparently the mysterious early-morning car crash outside his home last Friday and published reports of an alleged affair with 34-year-old Manhattan events planner Rachel Uchitel has imposed pressure on the world's top golfer.

His marriage to blond Swedish beauty Elin Nordegren, 29, was rumoured to be going through a rough patch.

The golf superstar, 33, has yet to come clean about the 'accident' that became headlines worldwide.

A Woods statement reads: ‘I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week.
Are You Numbed By The Glambert Shocker On American Music Awards?

Everyone who watched the American Music Awards 2009 on Sunday night must have been taken by surprise when Adam Lambert kissed another guy (gay?) on stage towards the end of his performance.

Taylor Swift may have beaten the late Michael Jackson to the punch in the number of top awards that went her way, but it was Lambert who got tongues wagging.

The 2009 American Idol participant, who was surprisingly beaten to the title by modest and humble Kris Allen, became the talk of the award show and, by now, the Internet is buzzing about that "Adamesque moment".

If anyone is thinking of rushing over to YouTube to grab a clip, you'll be disappointed. It's not there yet, as I write.

According to a Mashable post on the incident, it brought back memories of the infamous Britney Spears and Madonna makeout from the 2003 VMAs. The clip of that makeout had more than 5 million views.

The raunchy Lambert act was not the only highlight of the show.

Lady Gaga was in dazzling form, dressed in a fleshed-coloured bodysuit with flashing lights. Her act was nothing less than bizarre and outlandish. Some might say that was uber-cool.

And what a night it was when Jennifer Lopez took a tumble during her act! But thankfully, she's all right.

Argentina's soccer coach Diego Maradona has just been slapped with a two-month ban and fined £14,800 for his outburst at journalists last month in Montevideo where Argentina snatched a vital 1-0 win over Uruguay to confirm their qualification for the 2010 World Cup finals.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee made the decision Sunday (Nov 15) after a hearing in Zurich, attended by Maradona who earlier had watched his side lose to Euro 2008 champions Spain in a friendly in Madrid.
It's not the first time that Maradona had his brushes with authorities. In 1994 he took potshots at journalists with an air rifle outside his home in Buenos Aires, injuring four people, and was given a suspended jail sentence of two years and ten months.

It looks like war clouds are hovering over the media kingdom of Rupert Murdoch.

No sooner has News Corp great chieftain spoken that he must build the Great Paywall to protect his global media empire from thieving search engine raiders, the Telegraph.co.uk site reported Friday that the removal of News Corp's content from Google, their main antagonist, may come sooner than later.

After Murdoch's bluster against Google last weekend during an interview with Sky News Australia, News Corp chief digital officer Jonathan Miller was reported to have told the Monaco Media Forum on Friday that his chief was ready to block Big Goog's access to their sites soon.

And, mind you, they are not going it alone. News Corp, according to Miller, would lead the media industry in this direction. It will be interesting to know who else will join the "Block Google" march under the flapping banner of Murdoch's army.

Here's quoting Miller from the Telegraph report:

“We will lead. There is a pent up need for this. There has to be a resolution for the free versus pay debate otherwise we cannot afford to pay for things like news bureaus in Kabul.”

According to the Telegraph, Miller told the forum:

“There is real tension surrounding the free versus pay debate...It will play out in the next two years. We believe that the value of high quality content is not recognised online [by giving it away for free) so something needs to happen...I don’t believe the media industry can continue to exist in this way.”

That was something to perk up newshounds who sensed blood. Soon enough everyone is buzzing that the empire has raised the war cry and is ready to strike back.

And just for assurance that News Corp knows what it's in for, Miller added that The Times and The Sun newspapers in the UK could survive both economically and audience-wise without Google driving web traffic to its sites.

Frank Reed, writing at the Marketing Pilgrim blog, commented wryly in his post:

"Looks to me like this whole thing is just keeping News Corp in the news because there may not be any real news here since there is no plan and no definition coupled with vague threats and dates of even more vague threats."

But...

With all this goings-on, will it make the other big empire blink?

The guys up there in Mountain View, I guess, are nonchalantly going about their business. Care for a cuppa?

It has outperformed Vista.
However, the report says the pre-sales were all pretty much focused on Home Premium.
Based on an NPD Group research released Thursday, Microsoft had sold 234 percent more boxed editions of Windows 7 than it did Vista in the initial releases of both products.
NPD's numbers include both the initial sales of Windows 7 following its release on October 22 and pre-sales data from the discount program that Microsoft launched in July.
Another web statistics firm, Net Applications, also found early adoption of Windows 7 to be more popular than Vista.
However, it was reported that sales of PC hardware running the new OS didn't fare quite as well.
> Is Windows 7 The New Cool That Vista Isn't?

It has been almost ten years now and Microsoft's MSN web portal homepage has remained more or less the same.
But the good news is here - the new year will see Microsoft roll out its new-look MSN homepage.
According to a BBC News report, UK users will get to see the revamp MSN homepage in 2010. A small group of US users are getting access now while the rest of us got to wait for its launch.
Microsoft hopes the new look will drive more traffic to its Bing search engine, launched as a competitor to Google in June 2009.
BBC News said the MSN logo has also been redrawn to more closely resemble that of Bing.
The redesign is said to be moving towards a simplified layout of the homepage and still has the latest information and favourite services.

Yahoo! Turns Off The Lights At GeoCities

Finally, the lights went out on Yahoo! GeoCities on Oct 26, 2009. That's official.
For those who had cut their teeth at GeoCities in the early days, I'm sure they will look back with nostalgia and, perhaps, with a sense of loss.
I had a site called "Surf Haven" back then. I was such a newbie at that time, writing up some self-promo and doing stuff I don't feel proud to disclose now.
Sorry!
And I can't go back and retrieve my files and whatever because I have forgotten my login and password. My early email address got lost somewhere in the web wilderness.
As the Internet continued its growth, most of us moved on, I guess.
Web users became more Net savvy. More sophisticated.
Some more greedy, too. And more scam and spam.
Google arrived and became the mother of all search engines. And sort of taken control of our online existence. We love and fear Google all at the same time.

Then social networking became a fashionable pasttime. And almost everyone got hooked.

So we are where we are today and it's time to say goodbye to GeoCities, the website platform that helped to launch a thousand - and more - nerds and geeks online.

Can we truly say adios to Windows Vista now that Microsoft's new operating system is finally released? If a bunch of positive reports is anything to go by, then it looks like Windows 7 is gonna change the hearts and minds of users who have been experiencing headaches with Vista.
And for those Windows XP users who have been reluctant (and wise) not to switch over to the pesky Vista, maybe Windows 7 will give them the opportunity to do so. The majority of them held back from migrating to Vista because they are aware that it has issues with software incompatibilities.
Vista, since its launch less than three years ago, has gained notoriety as an abominable operating system that left users cold. It's a bug-infested OS as claimed by many users. So much so, newbies dare not touch it and the experts are simply annoyed by it.
So what are the prospects for people to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next 12 months? With Windows 7, has Microsoft redeemed itself after the Vista debacle?
> Is Windows 7 the new cool that Vista isn't?

Facebook - 300 Million Up And Still Rising

The Facebook phenomenon continues. Not a day goes by without reading about the advancement of this juggernaut social networking website.

According to the BBC News, the world's largest social networking site just got bigger. Facebook has revealed on Tuesday that it has reached 300 million active monthly users worldwide.

Facebook's vice-president of engineering, Mike Schroepfer, told the BBC News:

"Passing these milestones to me means we can continue to fund our development and our innovation and be self sustaining as we grow this network.

"We think 300 million is a just a step on the way to get as much of the entire world on the social network communicating with the friends and family and the people they want to communicate with."

It was also revealed that Facebook had started making money ahead of schedule, proving that a social networking site can be a viable business.

In his blog post, founder Mark Zuckerberg said that the company has succeeded at building Facebook in a sustainable way.

"This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term," said Zuckerberg.

Netscape founder Mark Andreessen, who is a Facebook board member, told Reuters earlier this year that the company would surpass $500 million in revenue this year.

Started five years ago in a Harvard dorm room, the rise of Facebook has been impressive. It overtook rival MySpace's 130 million users last year with its 150 million active users.

Now with 300 million users and a positive cash flow, analysts are beginning to believe that it could go public. Probably in a year or two.

At the rate Facebook is galloping along, some of the big boys will probably be looking over their shoulders.

Maradona's future lies in the "Hands of God"

Last Saturday, Maradona's ambition for another World Cup glory as Argentina coach became a hellish experience as his Brazilian counterpart, Carlos Dunga, put a spanner in the works.

The 3-1 result in Saturday's 'classico' showed that pragmatism won the day for Dunga. Judging by past results between the two South American giants, Dunga's tactical approach has given him three victories over Argentina since 2006.

Maradona and Dunga, who captained Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title, are poles apart in their coaching philosophy. While the Brazilian believes in being pragmatic, the Argentinian endorses romantic attacking football.

Maradona's idea of football is to play a cavalier attacking game. But like a cunning master in the art of warfare, Dunga had Brazil playing it patiently, drawing out the Argentines, and counter attacked when the opportunity opened.

Maradona's coaching ability was previously whispered. The latest defeat has sparked concern with the Argentine media crying out loud that Argentina's ticket to South Africa is at stake.

Maradona is now staring down the barrel.

In fact, the warning signs had been there when Argentina suffered a 6-1 humiliation inflicted by Bolivia at altitude in La Paz on April 1 this year. Then came June when Ecuador dealt them another blow, winning 2-0.

Maradona was gutted after that crushing defeat by Bolivia, saying "every Bolivia goal was a stab in my heart." His tactics and team selection were raising eyebrows.

Argentina, under Maradona's tutelage, have found themselves between a rock and a hard place. They are in a precarious position as far as the World Cup qualification is concerned. Maradona cannot afford another defeat.

Maradona will need to inspire his players when they take on Paraguay in a crucial qualifying match on Wednesday. Not an easy task.

Second-placed Paraguay will be no walkover. After that, two more fixtures remain in the South American World Cup qualifiers - against Peru and Uruguay who are just two points behind Argentina.

Following the latest defeat, one Argentinian newspaper, Critica, headlined that Maradona's dream of taking Argentina to South Africa now lies "In the Hands of God." Argentinians can only pray for a miracle.

In the space of roughly two hours on Sept 1, Tuesday, more than 140 million Google Gmail users worldwide were left stranded.
According to news reports, those who tried to log on received an error message that Gmail could not be reached.
Gosh, I was wondering what was wrong with my broadband on that night. Not realizing at first that Google, the powerhouse of search, was susceptible to this kind of breakdown.
Okay, Big Goog did say sorry after Gmail vanished for about 100 minutes but this "blackout" will be making some people nervous now about using its webmail.
As Google Mail users, we have noticed that the email service has hit some difficulties in recent times.
The "widespread outage" of Big Goog's webmail is not likely to give comfort to businesses who are planning on using Gmail.
They might want to think twice before migrating despite Google's marketing efforts over the last year to win over businesses.
> Engineer error knocks out Gmail

As more and more common folks, celebs and royalties join the Twitter micro-blogging service, thanks to the wide media attention given it, one would think that it's a great platform for exchanging messages.
Even if messaging text is limited to 140 characters, the service's popularity remains high and the number of users is growing.
But what makes people so caught up with twittering?
US market research firm Pear Analytics has released its recent study to find out what draws people to sign up with the service.
According to the BBC, Pear Analytics' short-term study of Twitter has found that 40% of the messages sent via the service are "pointless babble."
The BBC reports the study found that only 8.7% of messages could be said to have "value" as they passed along news of interest.
Conversational tweets that bounce back and forth between two users take up 37.5% of messages. Full report...

Guess What Guest Blogging Can Do For You!

Guest blogging has being touted by some bloggers as a great way to achieve some kind of recognition and popularity. They say it will open doors for you to reach 'new heights' in your blogging experience.
Let me state here without reservation that I'm no fan of guess blogging and lately I don't hear much about it unlike past years. I'm sure it's still going on somewhere in the Blogosphere but I guess it has gone lame.
Some people's argument is that guest blogging will help generate links, exposure and traffic to your own blog. Obviously, this is the motivation that got many bloggers posting on other people's blogs to gain that extra mileage.
If you want to move in the fast lane, once you joined the blogging community, you might think guest blogging would enhance the user experience. But first you've got to gain an 'entry ticket' before you're accepted by some blogger who thinks highly of you as a guest writer.
To do that, you have to show that you have got what it takes to write well - with great information, tips and whatever - to cut it though, otherwise don't even think about it...unless your host blogger is such a wooden head to let you post some inane and fluffy stuff on his or her site.
Well, there are some. You'll be surprised where you can find them!
Just recently, Grizzly had a heads-up on a guest blogger's post that tells a lot about guest blogging. Go figure it out.

New Google Payment Notification

If you're a publisher in the Google Affiliate Network you will be required to link to an approved Google Adsense account in order to receive payments for earnings.
This is part of Google's move to integrate your account instead of having different accounts with other Google products.

Google has informed all Google Affiliate Network publishers via email about this new changes.
If you're the primary user of your publisher account, you will receive a notification starting on August 13, 2009. And the deadline for you to do so is before midnight (Eastern Standard Time) on Sept 21, 2009, in order to receive payments through Google Adsense for the July and August 2009 earnings.

It looks like putting all your eggs in one basket. Just wonder if your Adsense account is closed for some 'delinquent' reasons, would that mean ta ta your Google Affiliate Network publisher's status as well?
