oracle will host the fifth OpenJDK Committers’ Workshop during the second week of August, immediately after the JVM Language Summit [1], at Oracle’s campus in Santa Clara, California, USA.

The workshop will be organized entirely as an unconference. We’ll have plenary sessions as well as some parallel sessions, to allow time for the discussion of specialized topics that are not of broad interest.

Space is limited, due to the size of the venue, so we ask that you register in advance. As at past Workshops, preference will be given to Committers with a strong record of past contributions, though some space will be made for new Committers who have a strong potential for ongoing future contributions.

Java 20 / JDK 20: General Availability

JDK 20, the reference implementation of Java 20, is now Generally Available. We shipped build 36 as the second Release Candidate of JDK 20 on 13 February, and no P1 bugs have been reported since then. Build 36 is therefore now the GA build, ready for production use.

GPL-licensed OpenJDK builds from Oracle are available here:

Builds from other vendors will no doubt be available soon.

This release includes seven JEPs [1], all in various stages of incubation and preview:

OpenJDK Governing Board 2023 Election: Nominations Please

The OpenJDK Governing Board oversees the structure and operation of the OpenJDK Community [1]. It has two At-Large Members who serve for a term of one calendar year, nominally starting on the first day of April each year [2].

The two-week nomination period for candidates to fill those seats is now open. It will end at 23:00 UTC on Tuesday, 14 March 2023 [3].

During this time any OpenJDK Member [4] may nominate an individual who does not currently hold an appointed Governing Board seat to fill one of the At-Large seats. That individual need not already be an OpenJDK Member. An OpenJDK Member may make more than one such nomination.

To nominate someone, send an e-mail message to members at openjdk.org with the subject line "GB Nomination: $NAME", where $NAME is the full name of the person you're nominating. Use the body of the message to make the best case you can for your nominee.

Nominees must accept their nominations by the start of voting. Those who do accept will be invited to submit short candidate statements to be posted on the election page [5].

Voting will start on Wednesday, 15 March 2023 and run for two weeks. All OpenJDK Members as of the start of the voting period will be eligible to vote. Detailed information on voting logistics will be available shortly.

I hereby propose the creation of a new Project, Galahad, with me as the Lead and the HotSpot Group as sponsor.

Galahad's primary goal is to contribute Java-related GraalVM technologies to the OpenJDK Community and prepare them for possible incubation in a JDK main-line release.

I work at Oracle Labs on GraalVM [2] with a particular focus on the Graal compiler. I have previously led the OpenJDK Graal project [3].
