The challenge for visual design on this site was to create an extensible, attractive, easy-to-read site which could be viewed in different ways to aid those with eye trouble: Default (the pretty colors), Yellow on Blue, Black on White, White on Black, and four different text sizes. Which is a little like designing sixteen websites in one. Admittedly, if you head to the Yellow on Blue version (which apparently is helpful for some sufferers of AMD), you’ll see that aesthetic considerations had to give way to functional ones. It was an education to design visually for people who have trouble seeing visuals — you quickly get to the question of “what is the meaning and purpose of design?” I find that it is informing my other work on sites that are for the general public.

We’ve been working a lot with Lybba during the past nine months (hey, that’s a baby) and have been having a hell of a good time doing it. In their words, much more succinct than mine:

We’re a 501c3 nonprofit, creating an online and mobile community where clinicians, researchers, and policymakers can develop evidence-based models of care, cultivate community, and drive insights faster to improve the health of individuals.

I love the people who make up Lybba, most of whom are independents and strewn all over the country (LA, DC, Florida, New York, San Francisco). We all come together to work for amazing clients in the name of communication around healthcare — to help other companies and nonprofits and hospitals come to more efficient, people-centered approaches to taking care of our vessels, our families, and our communities.

Although we did not have a hand in this project, we’re honored to be working with Lybba on others.

The new Starkey Hearing Foundation logo was unveiled just in time for their Annual Awards Gala in July, which attracts huge crowds of the well-heeled and celebritied. Our logo, in front of Miley Cyrus, Jordin Sparks, Kevin Costner, fits right in.  ; )

Check out the slanted diagonal top nav ribbon, the all-over photo background that moves with the size of the browser window, the randomized “Good to Know” factoids that pop up every once in a while, and the footer that sticks to the bottom of the browser window.

Today the educational non-profit WorldLink officially launched a complete redesign and expansion of its Nourish website, designed by Martha Cooper Design and Flax Media, and programmed by Example 7. This 155-page website, two years in the making, is the public face of WorldLink’s educational initiative on food and sustainability. The Cameron Diaz-hosted PBS special that anchors the Nourish Initiative and the many derivative short films featured on the site include appearances by Michael Pollan, Alice Waters, Jamie Oliver, Anna Lappé, and other luminaries in the sustainable food movement.

Some stats about the website:

• 155 pages of online content
• 96 pages of additional content in the form of free PDF downloads
• 25 videos (with another 31 short films coming)
• 20 Q&A articles on a range of food and sustainability topics
• 127 glossary terms
• 17 Nourish in Action stories from schools and communities
• 36 Be the Difference ideas to inspire individual and group initiative

A very large project, the Nourish website was created by dedicated WorldLink staff members, contractors (like yours truly), and lots of volunteer hours by said groups. After such an experience, we are proud to have earned the distinction of being on the “Nourish Team“.
