Recognising these challenges, Rutland County Council’s Living Well Rutland service is gearing up to launch the Summer 2026 Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme.

Fully funded by the Department for Education (DfE), this free initiative ensures that children and young people across Rutland have access to enriching experiences, a safe space to socialize, and nutritious meals throughout the school break.

What is on Offer?

The HAF programme blends physical activity, creative expression, and healthy eating into highly engaging day camps. Eligible children from Reception to Year 11 can join specialized holiday clubs located across the county. Depending on the specific hub and provider, the activities include:

Sports & Team Games to keep children active and moving.

Arts & Crafts to spark imagination and creative development.

Cooking Workshops teaching basic kitchen skills and food education.

Nature & Outdoor Exploration taking full advantage of Rutland's beautiful environment.

Summer 2026 Key Dates and Booking Guidelines

The Summer 2026 HAF programme will officially run from Monday 27 July 2026 to Friday 21 August 2026.

The dedicated online portal will open for bookings precisely at 7:00am on Tuesday 23 June 2026. Because spots are highly sought after and funding is capped, families are heavily encouraged to log on early to secure their preferred slots.

No Pre-Registration Required: You do not need an account beforehand. When you make your first reservation via the Rutland HAF Eequ Booking Platform, the system will automatically generate a profile for you.

Important Cancellation Rule: If your child can no longer attend a session, you must notify the specific event organiser immediately using the contact details found on your booking receipt. Because slots are limited, unexcused absences mean another eligible child misses out on free food and activities. Repeated failures to cancel appropriately may result in the forfeiture of your remaining holiday credits.

Who is Eligible to Attend?

The primary criteria for the core HAF programme is that a child must be eligible for income-related (benefits-related) Free School Meals.

Important Distinction: This is entirely separate from the Universal Infant Free School Meals automatically given by the government to all children in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2. To qualify for HAF, parents or carers must be actively receiving a qualifying benefit verified by their school or the local authority. You can verify your status or submit an application directly via the GOV.UK Free School Meals Portal.

The 15% Discretionary Funding

As in previous years, Rutland County Council reserves the right to allocate up to 15% of its total HAF funding to support vulnerable children who do not strictly qualify for benefits-related free school meals but would significantly benefit from the camps. For the 2026 season, the council is strictly prioritizing this discretionary fund for:

Children currently or previously looked after (in care)

Young carers balancing adult responsibilities at home

Military and service children facing deployment-related transitions

Families currently receiving assistance from the Household Support Fund

Accessible Support: Transport and One-to-One Care

The council is dedicated to removing physical and economic barriers so that every eligible child can participate seamlessly.

Help with Travel

If you love our local area and always find yourself snapping photos of your surroundings, a new community initiative is offering the perfect opportunity to showcase your talent. Rutland & Stamford Sound has officially launched its Local Lens Photography Competition. Organised in partnership with and proudly sponsored by Pixel + Paper, the contest celebrates the unique charm of the region while giving local residents of all ages a chance to see their work published.

The core theme of the competition is simply Rutland & Stamford. To qualify, submissions must feature a location, landmark, or subject found directly within the local area. Whether it is a sunset over Rutland Water, the historic stone architecture of Stamford, or a quiet moment in a village community, the organisers are looking for images that reflect what makes this corner of the world so special to the people who live here.

The competition is structured to give everyone a fair chance, dividing entries into three distinct age brackets based on the upcoming academic year. The Adult category, which also includes sixth-form and college students, will see ten winning photographs selected. The youth categories will highlight the region's younger talent, with two winners chosen from secondary schools and another two from primary schools. Organizers note that students who have just finished Year 6 should enter the secondary category, while Year 11 leavers should submit their work under the adult section.

In total, fourteen winning images will be selected to form the official Rutland & Stamford Calendar 2027. Beyond securing a spot in the calendar, the winning photographers will receive full photo credits within the publication, a physical copy of the finished calendar, and an official commendation certificate. Furthermore, the winning shots will be prominently featured in the upcoming Local Lens Exhibition, offering valuable public exposure for the photographers' work.

Submissions are currently open to all amateur and aspiring photographers in the community.

From Welford Road to The Rec Oakham’s Will Begy Takes on Grueling Six-Marathon Challenge for MND

An extraordinary feat of endurance is underway as local student and sportsman Will Begy tackles a grueling 232km ultra-running challenge to raise £10,000 for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) support and research.

On Monday, 1st June 2026, Will laced up his running shoes at the Welford Road stadium the home of Leicester Tigers. His destination? The Recreation Ground ("The Rec") in Bath, just in time to watch the Tigers take on Bath Rugby on Saturday, 6th June.

The epic journey, dubbed "Road To The Rec," requires Will to run a full marathon every single day for five consecutive days, followed by a final half-marathon on match day.

For Will an alumnus of Oakham School and a active player for both Oakham Cricket Club and Oakham Rugby Club when home from university—the motivation for this punishing challenge is deeply personal. It was sparked by the recent, heartbreaking news that former Leicester Tigers and England rugby captain Lewis Moody has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

"Growing up as a huge Leicester Tigers fan and as an Oakham boy, the recent news of Lewis Moody’s diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) has had a profound impact on me," Will shared on his fundraising page.
"Lewis has always been a huge inspiration, not just as a rugby player, but as a person, and this challenge is my way of helping raise awareness and vital funds to support those living with this devastating disease."

MND is a progressive, fatal neurological condition that attacks the motor neurones, gradually stripping individuals of their ability to walk, talk, eat, and ultimately breathe. By taking on this challenge, Will joins a passionate, rugby-led community that has fiercely rallied behind MND fundraising over recent years.

The Road To The Rec The Breakdown

To successfully connect the two iconic rugby grounds, Will's itinerary demands immense physical and mental resilience:

Monday, 1st June Mattioli Woods Welford Road (Leicester)

Departure 42.2 km (Marathon 1)

2nd – 5th June Continuous daily marathons through the English countryside 42.2 km daily (Marathons 2-5)

Saturday, 6th June Final push to The Recreation Ground (Bath) Arrival 21.1 km (Half-Marathon)

Total Leicester to Bath 232 km

Rutland County Council (RCC) has officially launched its 2026 Call for Sites exercise, opening a vital window for landowners, developers, and community stakeholders to put forward land for future development.

The submission window opened on Monday, 1st June 2026, and will close promptly at 4:00 PM on Friday, 31st July 2026.

This exercise comes at a critical juncture for the county. Following recent updates to the government’s National Planning Policy Framework, Rutland’s long-term housing targets are evolving, making the identification of sustainable, viable land more important than ever.

A Critical Caveat Past Submissions Will Not Carry Over

If you have previously submitted land for consideration, take note prior submissions are no longer valid for this round.

Even if a site was submitted during the 2022, 2023, or 2025 Call for Sites cycles or highlighted during the ongoing Local Plan process it must be resubmitted now.

Important Notice: If a site is not formally resubmitted during this 2026 window, it will be completely excluded from the Council's upcoming assessments.

What Submitting a Site Means

Participating in the Call for Sites is an exploratory and analytical step. It is important to understand the scope of the exercise:

No Guarantees: Submitting a piece of land does not mean it will automatically be allocated for development in the final Local Plan, nor does it guarantee that planning permission will ever be granted.

Evidence Base Building: The information gathered during this window will be rigorously assessed for technical suitability. Accepted submissions will form a core part of the Council’s official Evidence Base, helping map out where sustainable growth could logically happen over the coming decades.

A separate submission form must be filled out for every individual site being put forward. RCC has provided an online portal equipped with helpful guidance notes and contextual help boxes to streamline the process.

To complete a submission, you will need to provide concrete details regarding:

Exact site location and boundaries

Proposed future use (e.g., residential, commercial, mixed-use)

Current ownership status and immediate availability

Existing planning context and known environmental or physical constraints

Anticipated delivery timescales

Georgina Harrison earned her highly coveted place on the world stage earlier this spring after winning the British Bench Press Championships in March. Representing Great Britain at the World Championships on May 27th, she produced an outstanding, podium-worthy performance. Weighing in at just 56.59kg, Georgina Harrison managed to bench press an incredible 100kg—nearly double her own body weight rightfully earning her second place in the world within her competitive weight category.

The stellar result marks a massive milestone in Georgina Harrison’s powerlifting career, while simultaneously highlighting the rapid growth and success of strength sports within the local community.

Damage Prompts Urgent Safety Closure at Oakham Castle Steps

Visitors to one of Rutland’s historic landmarks will need to adjust their walking routes for the foreseeable future. Rutland County Council has announced the temporary closure of the steps and surrounding area connecting Cutts Close to Oakham Castle following significant structural damage.

The closure comes after a recent incident left the pedestrian access route unstable and potentially dangerous for members of the public.

According to an official statement issued by Oakham Castle management, extensive damage has been identified along the steps. Crucially, the impact is not just limited to the modern walkway; the incident has also caused significant damage to the motte the historic earthwork mound upon which the castle’s original fortifications were built.

Because the ground has been rendered unstable, authorities have cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.

The steps and immediate surrounding area linking Cutts Close to Oakham Castle are temporarily closed to all pedestrian traffic until further notice.

Repairing a site of such immense historical value is far more complicated than a standard construction fix. Because Oakham Castle is a protected heritage site, Rutland County Council cannot simply move in with heavy machinery.

The council is currently in active discussions with English Heritage to determine the most sensitive and appropriate way forward. Experts must balance the urgent need to stabilise the ground with the strict preservation rules required to protect the ancient motte.

Because of these complex preservation factors, officials have warned that the process may take some time before a permanent solution is implemented.

While the loss of this popular access point is frustrating for locals and tourists alike, council officials are urging the public to respect the barriers for their own safety.

In the statement, Oakham Castle management expressed their gratitude to the community:

"We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while specialist advice is sought and the safest, most appropriate solution is considered."

Alternative access routes to the castle grounds remain open, and visitors are encouraged to use these designated paths while heritage experts plan the delicate restoration work ahead.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue were called out to the pub in King Edwards Way at about 1pm.

No-one was injured in the blaze but a parrot belonging to the landlord, who lived above the pub, died in the blaze.

Fire crews from Oakham, Stamford, Corby, Melton and Wigston were called.
The command support vehicle from Shepshed was also called and a logistical support unit from Uppingham.

In a major U-turn during last night’s Full Council meeting, Oakham Town Council voted to halt a contentious sports facilities redevelopment strategy that had sparked uncertainty for local sports groups.

The decision marks a significant victory for the Oakham Bowls Club and Oakham Tennis Club, both of which faced potential impacts under previous council plans.

The council voted to overturn a prior resolution regarding local sports infrastructure, opting instead to back a new proposal brought forward by Cllr Martin Brookes and Cllr Sally-Anne Wadsworth.

The approved motion effectively shelves the initial phases of a confidential master plan titled Sports Facilities Feasibility & Redevelopment Strategy. Under the newly resolved terms:

Feasibility Work Halted: The Council will not move forward with Phase 1 feasibility work outlined in the confidential strategy.

Funding Withdrawn: A total of £25,000 in earmarked funding has been clawed back. This includes £10,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and £15,000 from the council’s general reserves.

The withdrawn funds were originally intended to bankroll Phase 1 activities, which included site searches, valuations, development appraisals, planning feasibility, and associated professional advice. By blocking this funding, the council has effectively protected the immediate future of the historic bowls and tennis clubs at their current sites.

Rutland Lions Named as Mayor's Charity for 2026–2027

Beyond the intense debate over local sports infrastructure, the meeting also brought positive news for the local voluntary sector.

Oakham Town Council formally agreed that the official Mayor's Charity for the 2026–2027 civic year will be the Rutland Lions.

"I am pleased to share that Oakham Town Council has formally agreed to support the Rutland Lions," the Mayor stated following the meeting. "I look forward to supporting their excellent work in our community over the coming year."

The Rutland Lions are well-known throughout the region for their community service, fundraising efforts, and support of local causes. The official designation ensures they will be the primary beneficiary of the Mayor’s fundraising events over the next twelve months.

Oakham Town Council Welcomes Two Familiar Faces to Fill Council Vacancies

Oakham Town Council has officially expanded its ranks this week, successfully co-opting two experienced local figures to help steer the town’s future.

Rutland Set for Major EV Charging Expansion with New Government Funding

Rutland’s transition to a greener transport system is taking a significant step forward. Rutland County Council has announced a major expansion of its public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, backed by freshly secured government funding. The council has secured £257,000 of capital funding through the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) programme. This new investment builds directly on the foundations laid by Rutland's initial LEVI pilot project, which launched in 2024.

To maximise the impact of the funding, Rutland is working regionally as part of the Fourth Midlands Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Consortium alongside Worcestershire, Warwickshire, and Leicestershire County Councils. By collaborating across borders, these local authorities aim to streamline infrastructure procurement, share best practices, and drastically improve public EV network coverage for drivers traveling through the heart of the region.

Following a competitive procurement process, the council has split its installation strategy between two specialized charge point operators to handle distinct driver needs. Connected Kerb has been awarded the contract to install 7kW standard chargers, guaranteeing the delivery of at least 70 new units across the county. These chargers are ideal for residents who leave their vehicles parked for longer periods or overnight. For drivers needing a quick top-up on the go, EZO has been contracted to install five 50kW rapid chargers at key locations.

The initiative specifically targets one of the most significant bottlenecks in electric vehicle adoption: providing reliable public facilities for residents, businesses, and visitors who do not have access to off-street parking or private driveways.

"This investment marks an important step forward in expanding Rutland’s EV charging network and supporting the transition to more sustainable transport," said Councillor Oliver Hemsley, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport. "By increasing the availability of public charge points across the county, we are helping to make electric vehicle ownership more practical and accessible for residents, businesses and visitors."

Industry partners share equal enthusiasm for the rollout. Chris Pateman‑Jones, CEO of Connected Kerb, noted that the key to switching to an electric vehicle starts with having a convenient place to charge where people live and park for longer periods of time. He emphasised that expanding on-street options gives residents greater peace of mind that an electric vehicle can realistically fit into everyday life.

Ollie Chatten, CEO of EZO, echoed this sentiment, emphasising that their focus will remain on providing reliable, user-friendly rapid charging options to give drivers traveling through the wider Midlands region ultimate confidence.

While the funding and operators have been finalised, exact installation maps and deployment timelines have not yet been made public. Rutland County Council has stated that specific location choices and delivery schedules will be officially announced in the near future.
