High Sheriff helps Officially Opens Refurbished Exton Play Park in Celebration of Village Community

The Playpark was opened by 94 year old Annie Lea a much loved village resident.

The village of Exton marked a historic community milestone as the newly refurbished Exton Play Park was officially opened by the High Sheriff of Rutland, Susannah Fish.

A central highlight of the celebration was the presentation of a prestigious certificate from High Sheriff Susannah Fish to Ruth Pollard. The award recognised Ruth Pollard’s exemplary leadership, dedication, and service to the community throughout the campaign to transform the site adjacent to the local primary school into a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment.

The Parish Council nominated Ruth Pollard for a High Sheriff Award in recognition of the outstanding effort she did to raise funds for the PlayPark.

"Exton Play Park stands as a testament to what small communities can achieve when dedicated volunteers and generous supporters pull together for the next generation."

The journey from an outdated play area to a state-of-the-art facility was powered entirely by grassroots teamwork and community activism. Realising the need for modern equipment, local volunteers formed the Play Action Group Exton (PAGE) committee, chaired by Ruth Pollard. Together, the team organised a diverse calendar of village events that brought residents together while raising vital capital.

Fundraising efforts spanned all seasons across the village.

Bringing the complete project vision to life required a combination of local community giving, public grants, and strategic partnerships. While the volunteer events provided essential momentum and community pride, the venture was backed by capital contributions from the Exton Parish Council, alongside financial support from local philanthropic donors, landowners, and regional grant-awarding bodies.

Thanks to the combined efforts of the PAGE committee, generous donors, and the parish council, along with a group of residents forming P.A.G.E. (Playground Action Group Exton). A grant received from FCC Communities also made the project possible.

The village now boasts a high-quality recreational haven that will serve local children and families for generations to come.

Rutland Launches ‘Maya’: A 24/7 Digital Assistant for Adult Social Care

Finding reliable advice on adult social care can often feel overwhelming, especially for individuals navigating the system for the first time or family members trying to arrange support for a loved one.

To make this process clearer and more accessible, Rutland County Council officially launched a brand-new online aid named Maya on 26 October 2026.

The digital assistant is built directly into the council's website and is also available via WhatsApp, giving residents, carers, and healthcare professionals round-the-clock access to trusted guidance.

Rather than wading through complex pages, users can ask Maya questions in their own words and receive tailored information in multiple languages 24 hours a day. The system helps guide users through key topics such as:

Booking care assessments, arranging post-hospital discharge support, and discovering equipment or home adaptations.

Finding local care services, identifying support for unpaid carers, and connecting with local community groups to stay active and independent.

Understanding how care is paid for and reporting concerns about individuals who may be at risk.

Maya is designed to provide information and direct residents to appropriate services. It does not replace professional human judgment, make decisions about care, or complete official care assessments.

The launch comes at a crucial time for the area. Rutland currently has a higher proportion of older residents than both the East Midlands and national averages, with more than a quarter of the population aged 65 and over a demographic projected to grow by over 40% by 2047.

Ensuring that adult social care resources remain easily accessible is vital for meeting future demand.

Councillor Diane Ellison, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Health at Rutland County Council, highlighted the goal of the initiative:

"Adult social care helps anyone who needs support because of age, disability, illness, mental health needs or other circumstances... All of this information is available online, but it can sometimes feel complicated or difficult to find. Our new digital assistant has been introduced to solve this problem... It doesn't replace our fantastic adult social care teams, who will continue to give advice, carry out assessments and provide support whenever it's needed."

Rutland County Council was recently ranked first out of 150 local authorities for several Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework (ASCOF) measures including user satisfaction, safety, and social care-related quality of life. Maya aims to build on that success by ensuring help is always just a click or text away.

Oakham Bids Farewell to the ‘Christmas Cone’ as Real 20ft Tree To Take Center Stage.

After seven years of controversy and debate over the infamous "Christmas Cones," Oakham Town Council decided that a real Christmas tree will grace the town centre this festive season.

The council has accepted a generous donation from the Rutland Garden Centre, a magnificent 20-foot real Christmas tree.

The tree will be adorned with 12 sets of festive lights, and three illuminated gift parcel decorations will sit displayed at its base.

Oakham’s Mayor, Cllr Martin Brookes, expressed his delight at the return to tradition, stating that he is personally very pleased to see a real tree returning to the heart of the town.

While the return of a traditional tree marks a major step forward, the council's broader efforts to enhance Christmas displays across Oakham faced unexpected setbacks. Mayor Martin Brookes revealed that plans to improve town-wide decorations were hit when it was discovered that someone had removed all the light brackets on one side of the High Street. Unfortunately, the discovery was made too late in the season to source and install replacements.

Power infrastructure has also limited festivities elsewhere. Due to a lack of power supply, Gaol Street will regrettably have no Christmas lights this year a outcome he described as "extremely disappointing."

On a brighter note, Mill Street will feature festive lighting, retaining the same display as last year after quotes for upgraded lights proved cost-prohibitive.

Despite this year's logistical hurdles, Oakham Town Council is setting its sights on a major festive revamp in the near future. In January, the council will launch a formal tender process for a new, multi-year contract aimed at delivering an enhanced lighting display for the town over the next three years and it is hoped the council will once again agree to illuminate all five town centre streets.

For now, residents can look forward to seeing the new 20ft tree lit up, marking the end of the "Christmas Cone" era and bringing a classic touch of holiday cheer back to Oakham.

New Civil Powers Introduced to Tackle Persistent Antisocial Behaviour Across Leicestershire and Rutland

Authorities across Leicestershire and Rutland have gained powerful new legal tools to crack down on repeat perpetrators of antisocial behaviour (ASB).

Starting 26 October 2026, Leicestershire Police, Rutland County Council, Leicester City Council, and the seven district and borough councils across the region will officially begin utilising Respect Orders.

These civil powers are designed to target persistent offenders who cause ongoing distress in local communities.

Introduced nationwide as part of the landmark Crime and Policing Act 2026, Respect Orders provide police, local authorities, and housing providers with a combined enforcement and rehabilitative framework

Courts can place legal restrictions on an adult perpetrator's behaviour to halt disruptive conduct.

Orders can mandate mandatory participation in targeted support services such as drug or alcohol rehabilitation, anger-management courses, or other rehabilitation programmes.

Crucially, violating a Respect Order is a criminal offence. Suspected breaches allow for immediate arrest, holding perpetrators accountable under criminal law.

Each case will be assessed individually based on risk evaluations, gathering of evidence, and community context before an order is requested.

Chater Bowls Club Reflects on a Stellar Season as Winter Renovations Begin

As autumn settles across North Luffenham, the quiet over the green marks the official end of another memorable season at Chater Bowls Club.

Looking back on the past several months, the club extends its heartfelt gratitude to all of its members whose enthusiasm made the year such a resounding success.

Equal thanks go to all the surrounding local clubs who shared in the spirit of friendly competition throughout the summer.

Community connections remained at the heart of this season's activities. The club enjoyed two excellent friendly matches with The Fox, while also having the pleasure of hosting both The Good Companions Club and the Edith Weston Ladies. These visits were true highlights of the summer calendar, fostering wonderful camaraderie and happily leading to several new members joining the Chater Bowls family.

Although the lawn bowls have been packed away for the winter, the club grounds will be far from dormant over the coming months. A busy schedule of improvements is already underway to prepare the facility for next spring. Inside the clubhouse, contractors are installing a brand-new kitchen alongside upgraded electrical work and two new ceiling fans a welcome addition designed to keep members cool during the warm summer afternoons ahead.

Outside, learning from this year's exceptionally hot and dry weather, work has begun on a new water storage system. The club remains hopeful that the winter moisture will have the tanks full and ready by the time play resumes in April.

Chater Bowls Club is always eager to welcome new players, whether seasoned competitors or complete beginners looking to try their hand at a new sport.

Five Years on the Airwaves, a Rolling Birthday Celebration for Rutland and Stamford Sound

Yesterday marked a historic milestone for our local airwaves as Rutland and Stamford Sound celebrated its 5th Birthday with a vibrant, traveling party that spanned the county. From Morris dancing in the morning mist to a glowing tribute at Rutland Water by night, the day was a testament to the station’s deep roots in the community.

The festivities kicked off at 9:30 am in Oakham Market Place. Under the watchful eyes of the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland and the High Sheriff, the Rutland Morris Dancers provided a performance that drew loyal listeners and station staff.

The centerpiece of the day soon arrived: a Blands "Rutlander" bus, specially decorated for the occasion. Members of the station team and including Oakham and Rutland News, climbed aboard as the bus prepared to depart for the next leg of the journey.

Upon arriving in Uppingham Market Place, the celebration moved to St Peter and St Paul’s Church. Inside, an assembled choir greeted the team with a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday," followed by the aptly chosen anthem, "Celebration." The journey then continued toward the village of Easton on the Hill. During the transit, presenter Rob Persani broadcast live from the moving bus a technical feat he jokingly compared to the legendary offshore broadcasts of Radio Caroline aboard the MV Fredericia.

A significant stop was made at the Birch Tree Café in Easton on the Hill. This unique venue serves as a social enterprise where young people with Down’s Syndrome gain workplace skills, confidence, and independence.

"The café helps enthusiastic young staff members develop workplace skills, so they can realise their own ambitions."

The station team spoke with the café staff and shared birthday cupcakes in the café’s spacious surroundings. The Birch Tree Café is a hub for everyone from cyclists and walkers to "laptop drivers" and families and the station was proud to highlight their vital work in the community.

The "Rutlander" bus then made a grand entrance into the Burghley House estate. In the visitor car park, everyone was treated to a performance by award-winning Ukrainian pianist and composer Yaroslav Oliinyk, who played his portable keyboard as the station mascot made an appearance.

In a display of expert driving, the Blands bus usually seen on the Rutland Flyer route between Melton and Corby navigated the narrow, historic gates of the estate for a photo opportunity in front of the Cecil family home.

As the sun set on a day of community spirit, the celebrations concluded with a spectacular visual tribute. Normanton Church at Rutland Water was illuminated in the signature colors of Rutland and Stamford Sound, providing a shining end to celebrating five years of local broadcasting.

Community Craftsmanship Honours Remembrance Stunning Handmade Poppy Display Installed at Oakham Castle

As the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal officially launches, visitors to Oakham Castle will notice a striking addition to the historical landmark. The castle's remembrance horseshoe has being transformed into a vibrant cascade of hand-knitted and crocheted poppies, thanks to a creative community effort across Rutland.

The inspiration behind the project came from Sian, owner of the local yarn and haberdashery shop Darn Knit on Mill Street in Oakham. While walking her dog near the grounds of Oakham Castle, Sian envisioned decorating the horseshoe with red remembrance poppies.

Knowing the depth of talent among Rutland's craft community, she launched a call for volunteers to pick up their needles and hooks. Local knitters and crocheters quickly answered the call, contributing hundreds of individual handmade poppies to bring the vision to life.

The installation Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day a time to pause, reflect, and show support for those who have served, those currently serving, and military families.

Rutland holds a deep connection to the military, with around one in five residents belonging to the armed forces community, including active personnel, reservists, veterans, and service families. Rutland County Council remains a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, which helps ensure fair treatment and specialized support for military personnel and veterans in the region.

Green Light for Rutland’s £3.5m Medi-Tech Centre at Oakham Enterprise Park

Rutland County Council’s Planning and Licensing Committee has officially approved planning permission for a brand-new £3.5 million Medi-Tech Centre. Located at Oakham Enterprise Park, this state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility represents a major leap forward for rural health and care provision, bringing key clinical services and diagnostic capabilities closer to local residents.

Designed to complement existing NHS and local health services, the centre will integrate clinical care, diagnostic facilities, and opportunities for health technology research and innovation all under one roof.
State-of-the-Art Facilities and Sustainable Infrastructure
Spanning approximately 915 square metres across two storeys, the new development will deliver a comprehensive range of clinical and commercial spaces:

The ground floor features modern consultation rooms, two operating theatres, specialized diagnostic facilities, and dedicated recovery spaces. It will also host a dedicated bay for a mobile MRI unit to improve access to diagnostic scans.

The first floor offers flexible, multi-use accommodation for healthcare professionals, health technology businesses, and research and development partners.

The centre includes 40 parking bays (featuring accessible spaces and EV charging points), dedicated cycle and motorcycle parking, a patient and ambulance drop-off zone, and enhanced pedestrian routes across Oakham Enterprise Park.

The centre will be managed and operated by Patient Care Locally CIC (PCL), focusing on innovative approaches tailored specifically to rural communities while driving skilled employment and economic growth in the area.

"The Medi-Tech Centre is about supporting the health and care sector in Rutland and helping to bring more services closer to home. It will provide facilities for clinical services and diagnostics, while creating opportunities for research and innovation that can benefit health and care across our county."

During the planning process, the Council-submitted application underwent key design revisions to enhance pedestrian access, parking layout, and the overall aesthetic of the building, securing approval with no outstanding statutory objections.

With planning consent secured, the project moves into its next exciting phase inviting healthcare, education, and technology partners to collaborate.

Shaping the Future of Local Transport Rutland County Council Launches Accessibility Consultations

Rutland County Council has announced a series of public workshops aimed at making public transport more inclusive, accessible, and user-friendly for everyone across the county. Residents, carers, and local community groups are being invited to share their firsthand experiences to help shape the Council’s upcoming Bus Network Accessibility Plan (2027 onwards).

Rather than focusing solely on the vehicles themselves, the initiative takes a holistic view of passenger travel. It addresses the entire journey experience from planning trips and accessing real-time travel information to safely navigating to bus stops, boarding, and reaching final destinations.

For many residents particularly older individuals, disabled people, and those with temporary or long-term mobility challenges—reliable public transport is a vital lifeline to healthcare, shopping, work, and social connections.

Highlighting the importance of community input, Cllr Oliver Hemsley, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, stated:

“It's important that we understand the challenges people face when using buses and listen to the people who experience them first-hand. These workshops will give residents and local organisations the chance to share their views and help us identify where improvements are needed.”

Feedback gathered during these sessions will be combined with bus stop accessibility audits, passenger data, and technical transport research to establish clear priorities for future work with bus operators and regional partners.

To ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate comfortably, the Council is offering both in-person sessions at Catmose House in Oakham and online evening options via Microsoft Teams.

New Bowel and Bladder Support Group Launching in Oakham

A welcoming new community initiative is coming to Oakham this November.

The Bowel and Bladder Support (B&BS) Group will host its inaugural meeting on Monday, 2nd November, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Living with bowel or bladder conditions whether navigating life with or without an ostomy can present unique daily challenges. B&BS aims to provide a friendly, understanding space where individuals, family members, friends, and carers can connect, share experiences, and access helpful resources.

Open to anyone living with bowel or bladder conditions, with or without an ostomy. Attendees are warmly encouraged to bring along family members, friends, or carers for support.

Emergency Supplies Cupboard: The group is establishing an emergency supplies cupboard. Supplies are currently limited, and donations are gratefully received.

A tuck shop will be available during meetings, with a suggested donation of £1 per person to help cover refreshments. The venue is fully accessible to all attendees.

A unique community harvesting project in Rutland is demonstrating the power of local produce and grassroots collaboration. Ketton Goes Nuts!, an innovative village-wide orchard initiative, has officially donated £900 to the Rutland and Stamford Fair Trade group.

The milestone donation was celebrated at the preview of the One World Week exhibition, hosted in the gallery at the Stamford Arts Centre, where representatives gathered for a formal cheque presentation.

Unlike traditional single-site community orchards, Ketton Goes Nuts! operates on a distributed model, gathering harvests from approximately 40 nut trees scattered throughout the village of Ketton.

Volunteers harvest, process, and turn the local yield into a variety of delicious, handcrafted products, including, freshly roasted nuts, artisanal nut butter, and seasonal local delicacies.

Proceeds from the sale of these handmade goods are redirected back into local and global ethical causes bridging the gap between village sustainability and international fair trade values.

"This project showcases what can be achieved when a community comes together to make creative, sustainable use of the natural resources right on its doorstep."

The recipient, Rutland and Stamford Fair Trade, works to promote fair wages, ethical sourcing, and sustainable trade practices both locally and internationally. The £900 contribution will help support their ongoing outreach programs, educational displays, and community initiatives aimed at raising awareness about global trade equity.

The timing of the presentation tied in perfectly with One World Week, an annual national event encouraging community action and reflection on global justice, sustainability, and shared responsibility.

Volunteers Needed to Help Light Up Oakham This Christmas

As the festive season approaches, Oakham Town Council is calling on friendly community members to lend a hand and help make this year’s Christmas Lights Switch-On a safe and memorable celebration.

The popular annual event is scheduled for Sunday, 22 November, in Oakham town centre. To ensure everything runs smoothly, event organisers are seeking volunteer stewards to support festivities throughout the day.

What Does a Volunteer Steward Do?

Stewards play a vital role in keeping the event safe, welcoming, and organised for visitors of all ages. Responsibilities include:

Welcoming visitors to Oakham town centre.

Providing directions and assisting attendees with general information.
Assisting at road closure points to manage traffic and pedestrian flow.
No prior experience is necessary, as a full briefing will be provided on the day.

Event Details & Flexible Shifts

Volunteers can choose to offer a few hours of their time or stay for the entire duration of the event:

Event Time: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Highlight Moment: The grand Christmas Lights Switch-On countdown takes place at 4:30 PM

Oakham Town Council Hit by Fresh Wave of Direct Debit Fraud

Oakham Town Council has once again fallen victim to banking fraud, with unauthorised direct debits surfacing on its accounts.

According to upcoming finance committee papers, suspicious direct debit transactions have been identified on the council's current account. for an unknown period of time, prompting urgent reviews and administrative action from council.

At present, the exact total of the funds stolen remains unclear as investigations continue.

However, local officials noted that much like previous historical incidents of fraud affecting the authority the council expects to recover the lost funds in full through its bank.

The issue is set to be formally addressed by members of the Oakham Town Council Finance Committee during their ordinary meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 28th October 2026, where they will review the full scope of the breach and the remedial steps taken by management.

9. BANK ACCOUNT FRAUD

MOTION: That Committee note that direct debits have appeared on the Lloyds

current account bank statements which appear to be fraudulent, and to note the

All Saints Church, Oakham Invites Community to Join Its First Community Christmas Tree Festival

All Saints Church in Oakham is opening its doors to the local community for a Christmas Tree Festival taking place from Friday, 4th December to Sunday, 6th December.

The event aims to bring the parish and town together in a celebration of light, creativity, and festive spirit while raising vital funds to support the church and its work in the wider community.

Organisers are inviting local businesses, voluntary organisations, children's and youth groups, as well as families and individuals who love Christmas, to get involved by registering and displaying their own decorated Christmas tree.

The event is designed to welcome everyone, regardless of background. At a time when the parish is currently without a Vicar, the festival serves as an opportunity to gather the community in a historic building where generations of Oakham residents have celebrated life events for hundreds of years.

Participants wishing to display a tree should follow these key rules:

Theme: "WINTER WONDERLAND"

Tree Specifications: Trees can be real or artificial and must not exceed 7ft (approx. 210cm) in height.

Lighting: Battery-operated lights only.

Set-up Times:

Thursday, 3rd December: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Friday, 4th December: 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Take-down Time: Trees must be taken down promptly after closing on Sunday afternoon, as the church is hosting an NSPCC event on Monday.

Every so often, a new local venture captures the true spirit of community, passion, and courage. On Glaston Road in Morcott, near Oakham, Rutland Point Bistro is doing just that transforming a dream into a thriving sanctuary for food, family, and connection.

Behind this warm, welcoming spot is a close-knit trio, Daniela, her partner Paul, and Paul’s brother Braden. Their story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when you take a leap of faith and put your heart entirely into something you believe in.

Not long ago, Daniela, Paul, and Braden led ordinary professional lives. But earlier this year, a chance discovery changed everything.

When they came across a beautiful, peaceful premises set along the scenic A47 corridor, they saw far more than just a building they saw untapped potential.

Driven by a shared vision to build something of their own, Daniela and Paul took the plunge, leaving their careers behind to bring Rutland Point Bistro to life.

When doors opened in June 2026, the local response was immediate. The bistro welcomed a rush of visitors from day one so much so that Braden left his own job shortly after to join the team full-time. What began as an ambitious family project quickly evolved into a bustling daily reality.

Running an independent business is no small feat, especially while raising four young children between them. Yet for Daniela, Paul, and Braden, every long hour and tough challenge has been matched by immense reward.

The vision for Rutland Point Bistro goes far beyond serving great food and drink. The goal has always been to create an authentic hub where everyone feels genuinely welcome:

Tail-Wagging Success at the Annual Rutland Pet Festival in Oakham

The grounds of Oakham Castle came alive with paws, claws, and scales on Sunday, 18th October 2026, as pet lovers gathered for the popular annual Rutland Pet Festival, organised by Carolyn Acton Events.

The well-attended community event brought together families, local animal lovers, and an incredible array of charming pets.

Visitors spent the crisp autumn day exploring a variety of vibrant stalls set up both in the castle grounds and inside the castle walls.

Highlighting the diversity of Rutland’s loved animal companions, visitors entered an impressive 120 pets into the day's fun competition classes.

While dogs were well-represented, the visitors were delighted to see an array of exotic and small animals taking part, including a ferret, rabbits, guinea pigs, and even a snake.

Oakham Mayor, Cllr Martin Brookes, joined in the festivities and took on the delightful yet difficult task of judging many of the fun categories throughout the day.

"Well done to everyone who brought a well-behaved pet along, and huge congratulations to all the winners of the fun classes!" said event organiser Carolyn Acton.

Competition was friendly but fierce across all categories.
