Pledging service and value to customers and community since 1947.

The year was 1947. It was the year Martin and Jane Tarnow became partners in the grocery business when they opened the first Martin's on Portage Avenue in South Bend, Indiana with just $100 in cash. Our employees and customers know that Martin and Jane started with much more than that $100. They started with a strong belief in community, friendly service, a commitment to great selection and prices, up-to-date technology and a clean store - all of which makes Martin's a great place to work and shop. We encourage you to dig into our portal page by checking our blogs and upcoming events to learn more about how we support the community.

Count on us. Not just for service and savings, but for community support and so much more!

On February 24th, Martin's at Heritage Square hosted our 3rd Annual Ice Festival. Twelve carvers from throughout the Michiana area came to compete for 1st Place and the coveted People's Choice Award. The day started at 10:00am when carvers created beautiful works of ice-art throughout Heritage Square shopping plaza. The carvers met back at Martin's for the three hour competition portion of the event, which lasted from 1:00-4:00pm. This is the first year that no theme was given to the carvers, and their beautiful carvings each reflected a unique style and creativity. First place was awarded to Andrew Thistlethwaite of Riverfront Café in Niles. Second Place was awarded to Jim Houser of Huntington Indiana. Third Place and the People's Choice Award were both given to Mike Evans of Notre Dame. On site during this fun-filled day was the Leinie Lodge, which served up bowls of their Berryweiss Chili. Martin's also hosted a cookout and Holladay Properties sponsored horse and carriage rides free to the public. Almost $500 was raised for Heat for Homes from food sold throughout the day. A BIG thank you to Metro Beverage for making 16 gallons of chili! Also thanks to Old Wisconsin, Pepsi, and Lewis Bakeries for sponsoring ice blocks and donating to our cookout.

Last week I had the privilege of cooking with some very sweet petite chefs. Once a month, kids from the Center for the Homeless come over for an hour of 'A Book & a Snack.' We read a favorite children's book and then do a cooking activity to coincide with it. This time was 'If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.' We made cookies, of course, and also chocolate milkshakes and macaroni and cheese. A meal fit for a mouse was enjoyed by everyone. It has been a great experience getting to know the kids at the shelter. This is a new program that we at Martin's School of Cooking started at the end of the summer. I was watching the show, Top Chef, and one of the episodes featured the chefs working with a group called 'Common Threads.' It's an after-school program where inner city kids team up with mentors and learn all kinds of skills. I thought it would be a great idea to apply at the cooking school. I contacted a number of our chef instructors and asked them to volunteer to work with different age levels and teach basic cooking skills. We had a great response! The program has since evolved into 'Book & a Snack' and the kids love it. January will be the next time we meet, and I am really looking forward to reading Green Eggs and Ham and whipping up a delicious breakfast with my little chefs! The kids who participate in this program range from ages 4-8, and are a treat to work with. It is so different than working with the kids who usually attend cooking classes. Not better or worse, but these kids just have a different outlook on what they are doing. They are so GRATEFUL to be involved and doing something fun. This month Chef Eileen Quinn will be working with teenagers from the shelter and will be teaching them beginning chef skills. This is Chef Eileen's first time teaching a group from Center for the Homeless, and she is really excited. I can't wait to see how this program evolves and becomes bigger and better as the cooking school grows. Stay tuned for updates on 'A Book & a Snack' in the near future.

Cancer touches everyone. If you can say you've never known anyone who's been diagnosed with some form of Cancer, you are one of a very lucky few. Four years ago, my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 48. Resources and programs provided by the American Cancer Society helped her and thousands of others diagnosed with cancer really understand what the words "you've got cancer" mean. And, thanks to years of cancer research she and thousands of others are now cancer free. Not everyone, however, can be cured. Further research must be done to erdicate cancer forever.Help support the American Cancer Society locally during Coaches vs. Cancer 2008 in one or more of many ways:Stop by a participating Martin's Super Market and Putt-Putt for a cure! The initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities and advocacy programs. Locally, the program is supported by Notre Dame Head Basketball Coach, Mike Brey and his wife, Tish. Not only do Mike and Tish Brey lend their names to the event, they are both quite involved in the planning, hosting and execution of the events.

Last Saturday, we held our second Pet Adoption Day at Martin's Heritage Square. As if having Roofsit and Chef Camp in the same week wasn't enough, I scheduled Pet Refuge to come out and bring some dogs and cats! The day was absolutely great. We hosted a cookout and offered face painting for all the kids that stopped by. There was another event going on in the square: an art fair; so that made our turnout even better! Below is a breakdown of what was accomplished from Pam Comer, "Top Dog" of the Pet Refuge Guild:"I wanted to let you know that "Dora" the 7 month old retriever/chow mix found her forever home as a result of this event. They are a great family who just moved to Granger from Texas. They have two children who fell madly in love with Dora. Faith the boxer is also singing the praises of Martin's Supermarkets as she too, is going to her forever home as a result of your invitation. Faith is a two year old boxer that we were able rescue from a not so nice puppy mill where she would have been destin live out her life having littlers. Now thanks to Martin's the only thing she will be doing for the rest of her life is getting lots of love and the comfort of a forever home. You have no idea how much it means to us to be able to showcase our dogs and cats at your location. You have wonderful employees who made us feel welcome and your customers were very generous with donations reaching the $500.00 mark. Also the artists that participated in the event picked Pet Refuge as their charity of choice and will be forwarding a check to the shelter from the registration fees.Once again Martin's Supermarkets reaches out to our community and makes a difference! A big woof and meow from all the animals at Pet Refuge and a special thank you for making all of this possible."This is my favorite event that we do here, and I have to admit I was a little tempted to bring home a little brother for my dog, Howie. We hope to have Pet Refuge out again before the end of the summer. Thanks again Pet Refuge! We appreciate all you do for our furry friends!!!

Michiana gives to the future of our community - KIDS. Another Roofsit come and gone and the 12 year total approaches 2 million dollars for area child abuse prevention programs. Roofsit 2008 generated over $72,000 in donations according to Kevin Kruggel, CPA and Partner at Kruggel, Lawton & Company, LLC - the official accounting firm of Roofsit. "Having been involved for the last few years, it's been inspiring to see the Michiana community step up to help the cause," said Kruggel. He also thanked his employees for their donation of time and spirit to the event.U93 DJ's- Rob, AJ, and Karen Rite cheered on the roof after the total was announced knowing that what they did will make a difference.

Ellen Kyes from Take 10 (take10.org) stopped by and told a story about a2 year old that was shaken by his father and suffered massive brain damage that kept him alive but very limited until he was 7 years old when he passed away. It takes less than 30 seconds to damage a babies brain or spinal cord... When you get stressed around your child,.... here's some tips to avoid taking it out on the child: If you have a baby who is crying and you can't make her stop,Take ten deep breaths.Babies pick up on the emotions of the adults around them-if you are stressed and frustrated or angry, the baby will sense that and cry all the more. So you getting calm and quiet will work to help calm the baby.Make sure the baby is safe (in a crib, bassinet, baby seat) and walk away for a few minutes.Go somewhere quiet, where you can't hear the crying, and calm downWalk around the blockJust get some fresh airIf you smoke, go out and have a cigarette, then come back in.Ask someone else you trust to watch the baby for a few minutesDo something calm and happy for yourself Then go back to the baby-she might have calmed herself and stopped crying. If she's still crying, you will be able to handle it much better.

Thank you Michiana for a GREAT Kid's Day!!

WOW! What an awesome kid's day. Michiana doesn't let a little rain get in the way celebrating kids in support of child abuse prevention. Hundreds of little ones attended the annual Kid's Day at Martin's #10 (SR23 & Ironwood) and many came after having emptied their piggy banks to help the cause.Special thanks to the staff and volunteers from the Cass County Council for Youth for hosting a variety of kid's arts and craft activities. Martin's Pharmacsist Justin Dunnem (Store #25, Heritage Square) raised money for Roofsit by braving it for 4 hours in the dunk tank, a popular attraction for the kids. Martin's Paw Mart collected donations in exchange for a chance to win a free gold fish, (a parents favorite prize!) and Martin's School of Cooking hosted a trail mix buffet. The Oscar Mayer Weinermobile, a Roofsit tradition and Oscar Mayer hot dog lunch are always a big hit at Kid's Day! Thank you to the many Martin's business partners out at Kid's Day - Dean Foods, Prairie Farms, Steep and Brew Coffee, Carl Buddig, 7-Up, Sunmaid Raisin Bread, Pepsi, Seyfert's, Bonnie Doon, Bunny Bread, Kellogg's, Edy's Ice Cream, and General Mills. The Main Stage Theater Group, performed songs from the musical Back to the 80's on the Kid's Day Stage sponsored by North Point Pediatric Denistry and the Roz Puppets entertained. It's great to see kid's having a good time in support of helping other kid's. Daughter of Michelle Peffley (Martin's #14, E. Jackson in Elkhart) has done her fair share of work to help raise money for Roofsit 2008. Two weeks ago she helped at the store's annual car wash fundraisier and last weekend had a lemonade stand to benefit the cause. Every penny counts and we can make a differece. Thanks Rob and AJ, Karen, Caleb, Carrie, Bob and all of the U93 Staff for helping us help kids!!
