This book is a product from an essay competition in 2010 titled – Asia’s Challenge 2020 organized by TIME Magazine, Asia Business Council and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

Among the 400 essays submitted by Asians age 32 and below, nearly 100 author’s essays were selected and compiled for publication of this book.

Asian Tigers refers to four Asian countries, namely Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. These nations and areas were notable for maintaining exceptionally high growth rates (in excess of 7 percent a year) and rapid industrialisation between the early 1960s and 1990s.

The term has now being used even more broadly to describe economies that are growing rapidly on a sustained basis. The young Asians of the Asian Tigers now belong to the generation of what we now called Tiger Cubs – they have protective parents who often use their newfound affluence to ensure that their children make the most of opportunities that the elder generation never had.

The Asia’s Challenge 2020 Essay competition poses the following questions to writers:
What is the most important challenge facing Asia over the next decade? Why? What should be done about it?

The main purpose of the essay prize is to generate fresh ideas for tackling key challenges to Asia’s continued competitiveness and development, as well as encourage young professionals to make an impact on public policy and business in Asia.

As such, you can expect a myriad of opinions from young Asians about a diverse range of topics about Asia as a whole from this book.

Two authors of this book, Mark L. Clifford and Janet Pau compiled the selected essays and summarizes the important views of all the essayists into the following chapters.

Oracle has made available the slides of the Oracle-Google case unfolding in a San Francisco courtroom also known as The World Series of IP.
I would probably call it the match of the Larry. Or Larries.

In any argument, a party would only presents what is positive for them.
I’m interested to see how Google counter this, if possible with slides for the public as well.

However, the email client software rarely allow you to edit the HTML source directly.
One recent use-case I have:

I want to put a yahoo emoticon into a Gmail composed email, not by attaching the image file, but a direct HTML img tag which shows the online image.

Obviously Gmail does not support coding HTML email.
There are many ways to do this, you could also sign up for some bulk email services that you can edit the HTML template, but that’s another story for sending more than one email.

So one easy way is to use Microsoft Outlook, edit the source and forward it to Gmail.

One thing is missing in some older Outlook versions though.
You cannot edit HTML source in Outlook directly.

Download your preferred Tomcat version from http://tomcat.apache.org/

The mapping between the specifications and the respective Apache Tomcat versions is:

Extract the gzip file

gunzip apache-tomcat-<version>.tar.gz

and then untar it to your preferred location

tar xvf apache-tomcat-<version>.tar

The file needed to be copied in /etc/init.d, and then

To install the script for various runlevels, run

it will be marked as “on” for runlevel 3, 4, 5 . To see the configuration of all services, you can run

/sbin/chkconfig –list

To start and stop Tomcat:

To make a shortcut  or soft link:

Download the latest from Oracle’s website by selecting the correct version for your server.

Eg. latest version available now is jdk-7u3

Check your OS version with the following command:

Once download, you can install it by running the file

rpm -iv jre-<version>-linux-<os>.rpm

JDK will be installed under /usr/java

If you have downloaded the binary installer and not a rpm file, refer to this.

Install LAMP

yum -y install httpd php mysql mysql-server php-mysql

This will take a few minutes to download (total package size is 16Mb)

Once its done Yum will say “Complete!” and you will be returned to shell.

Next, you need to set a MySQL root password. Without this, your MySQL server is open to attack, and it WILL happen! Use the following command (WITH QUOTES) to set your root password:

mysqladmin -u root password 'ENTER-PASSWORD-HERE'

NOTE: Single quotes are required

Finally, we are going to set Apache & MySQL to run on startup. This is useful if your server has a power outage or needs to be rebooted as it will automatically restart Apache & MySQL for you.

  /sbin/chkconfig httpd on
  /sbin/chkconfig --add mysqld
  /sbin/chkconfig mysqld on
  /sbin/service httpd start
  /sbin/service mysqld start

To check everything worked, browse to the web servers directory (on CentOS its /var/www/html) and create a new file using text editor called phpinfo.php.

Enter the following code into that file to check PHP is working:

Install MySQL Admin tools

Make sure to install a window manager in order to get a normal GUI desktop. You can use the command yum groupinstall “GNOME Desktop Environment” to install the Gnome Desktop and requirements, for example.

2. Configuring un-encrypted VNC

You will perform the following steps to configure your VNC server:

1. Create your VNC users.
2. Set your users’ VNC passwords.
3. Edit the server configuration.
4. Create and customize xstartup scripts.
5. Start the VNC service.
6. Test each VNC user.
7. Setup the VNC service to start on reboot.
8. Additional optional enhancements

2.1. Create your VNC users

As root:

$ su -
# useradd marvin
# passwd marvin

2.2. Set your users’ VNC passwords

Login to each user, and run vncpasswd . This will create a .vnc directory.

[~]$ cd .vnc
[.vnc]$ ls
passwd

2.3. Edit the server configuration

Edit /etc/sysconfig/vncservers, and add the following to the end of the file.

VNCSERVERS="1:marvin"
VNCSERVERARGS[1]="-geometry 640x480"

2.4. Create xstartup scripts ( Skip this step for CentOS 6 )

We will create the xstartup scripts by starting and stopping the vncserver as root.

Login to each user and edit the xstartup script. To use Larry as an example, first login as larry

If you do not uncomment the two lines you will get a gray speckled background to the VNC window.

2.6.3. Starting vncserver at boot

To start vncserver at boot, enter the command /sbin/chkconfig vncserver on.

Though this is not entirely an official book about Amazon or Jeff but the author manage to provide insights on how Amazon operates or how Jeff Bezos runs his business.

There are bound to be many details that even one Amazon customer will not know but can be found in the book.

During the early days of entrepreneurship, Amazon is one of those who starts to collect or patent everything or anything. As the title of the book ‘One Click’, Amazon was the one who patented the concept of purchasing online with a single click.
There are also many other patents that Amazon owns too but they do not sue others who violated it.

It is also through this book that I learn that Amazon was NOT the one who makes profit the main objective initially, but to gain the most share from the book market.

This book slowly go through the history of Amazon and its eventual success in reinventing the book industry, from making purchases online, at low prices until the release of its digital ebook reader, the Kindle.

My Conclusion:
The book is a very good read for the weekend and could well possibly be a very quick read for seasoned readers as well.
I would take a pinch of salt though, from its content as it does not seems to show reputable source for the information provided other than interviews or public accessible information about Amazon or Jeff Bezos himself. However, as the facts are all in general, I think there could be least possible anything could go wrong too.

Following is what the author wrote about himself.

Having written two books in which the subjects would not give me interviews (interesting that the founder of a book-selling site does not give interviews for books) and one book in which the subject had too much control over the manuscript, my next book will be one in which I have direct access to the subject AND complete control over the content.

I figure its either you get interviews or you do not try a biography. Credibility is important in writing a biography, in my opinion.
Having said that, this is still a good read.
