I've decided to do some design studies in order to improve my ability to produce solid ideas for production portfolio pieces and improving my ability to fill in gaps when working from concept art. I plan to start a series of robot concepts the first being a mining scout robot which is used to evaluate asteroids and other extraterrestrial body for mineral content. So far I've worked out the arm design.

I wanted to do some R and D with Speedtree and some lighting techniques in Unreal Engine 4. I wanted to see what type of results could be achieved to create interesting lighting and shadow in a forest environment. I also wanted to trying out some material ideas for vegetation in Unreal. Speedtree was used to model the grass and most of the bamboo the leaf and twigs were modeled in 3ds max. For the lighting I'm using Ray Traced Distance Field Soft Shadows, Distance Field Ambient Occlusion and Light Propagation Volumes.

I've modeled a few different pipes, valves, vents and pipe assemblies to help breakup the repetition of the corridor. I also made some paint color variations of the 2 scratched paint materials. Still using box mapping until I have a finished set of models.

I'm working on a scifi modular environment. I decided to stat blocking out the corridor to nail down the mood. I'm happy with the look and feel so I'll move on to some standard walls and turning the block out models into more functional looking objects. Most of the objects in the scene are temporarily box mapped to speed up model iteration. To speed up the texturing process I'm using separate materials, once I finalize material selections I'll make a texture sheet with only the final materials.

I've been look at evermotion.org a lot lately and I've really felt the urge to do a realistic interior scene. I'm reusing the a hi poly couch from a game model I did earlier this year. I've created a love seat and chair from the couch and everything else has been modeled in the past few weeks.

A study I'm working on to get my head around modular workflow. These three buildings were a get run to test out my understanding of the concept. I still need to make a spec map and gloss map and do some real time renders, these are rendered in mental ray inside of 3ds Max. The diffuse texture was created in Photoshop and the normal map was created with Ndo.

I wanted to see if my shader could pull off skin. It's been great for non organic surfaces. Figured I'd post it since it came out fairly decent.

This is a furniture study I did to get the hang of Normal mapping high poly detail to a low poly model. The screen shots are from the unity game window using a surface shader I wrote. Any and all feedback is welcome.

I've made some changes to the lights, thickened the hair, adjusted the beard and added eye lashes. Also the skin and eyes are tweaked as well.

Long time no post but I'm back now. Just some doodles playing around with some different character ideas. They are far from done but I figured I'd post them anyway.

In this update I changed the direction of the streaks on the knife, added the cucumber and changed the texture on the sliced tomato. Not sure I'm done with the cucumber yet but I'm moving on to the lettuce for now, I've also removed the water droplets until the rest of the scene is finished.

I've added a salad bowl and made some adjustments to the sliced tomato shader. Also added a little more reflection to the water droplets so they would show up better.

I've done some more modeling on the sliced tomato, modeled the cutting board and added a counter top object. Still need to add some tomato juice on knife blade and maybe more water and juice on the board. I still plan on adding a few more vegetables to the board and some kitchen items to the counter. The background is an image dropped in in Photoshop.
