How to Fix your Auto Upholstery

Nothing can give you the old car blues more that torn auto upholstery. It happens to just about every car at one time or another and now that we are keeping our cars longer it is happening to even more of us. This does not mean we have to accept this wear and tear since there are a couple of different ways we can mend our auto upholstery erasing those visible years of use. Auto upholstery takes a significant amount of daily abuse and under high tension given the way it’s made firm to support you while driving or riding. Of course you could use automobile seat covers but before spending that money give this low cost option a try. Once fixed you can fall in love with your car all over again.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

Iron on heavy duty patch
Mighty Mendit
Household iron

First this to do is to analyze the type of rip that has occurred since some are easier to fix than others. Did the fabric rip due to stress on a seam? Did something cut into the fabric? Is the rip horizontal or vertical? Another variation on this is the “L” shaped rip that comes from stress that is then pulled at or caught on something.
Seat covers can also be worn away from infant car seats rubbing on the auto upholstery. This one has an easy fix that should be used from the very start. Under the car seat place an approved car seat protector. Use only an approved product for this since otherwise you can compromise the safety of the infant car seat. The auto upholstery protector will help distribute the pressure points of the car seat minimizing wear on the automobile seat.
If the rip to your auto upholstery is on the seam near the edge it’s possible to use a highly pliable glue to make the mend. A product such as Mighty Mendit claims to be able to bind just about any fabric surface to another. To increase you odd of getting a good bond place a piece of same type fabric under the rip, tucked into the seat. Apply the Mighty Mendit to both the fabric of the seat cushion and the under patching fabric forming a bridge of fabric to help secure the bond.
If you need a quicker and easier fix look at your Auto supply store for patching fabric that is a close match to your auto upholstery. Then use it from the inside of the rip to bind the rip together in an invisible fashion. Do this by tucking a generous size piece of the patching material under the rip and then pull the edges of the rip together with either a couple of hand sewn stitches or with an extra set of hands pushing from each side until the ripped edges just meet.
When the ripped edges are well aligned apply heat from a household iron carefully to the surface. Go slow and keep the temp low as to make the bond and not melt your auto upholstery fabric. After bond has occurred leave the are untouched for a couple of hours for an even stronger bond to form.

Should You Do Your Own Car Upholstery?

When you are considering an upgrade in your auto upholstery or need to make a repair to the existing upholstery, you might be thinking about doing it yourself. It is not easy, but a lot less expensive.

Although much attention is given to the engine and the exterior of your automobile, the interior is where you and your passengers actually come into contact with the automobile. The comfort of your ride can make or break the whole driving experience, and quality upholstery is the key to comfort. When you are thinking of upgrading your upholstery or are forced to replace or repair it due to interior damage, you can be in for an expensive situation.

The reason that auto upholstery repair is expensive is the skill and experience that is required to do the work. It is also true that many upholstery shops take advantage of their rather exclusive ability to perform the repairs and charge a bit more than really is consistent with the costs of materials and labor involved. Although you can shop around for a better deal and you can be lucky and find an extremely honest shop, there are some advantages to a do it yourself approach.

One of the advantages of any type of do it yourself experience involved with auto repair is that it makes you much more knowledgeable about the costs and labor involved. This is the general rule of auto repair. The customer who brings a car to a mechanic and shrugs and says, “I have no idea what is wrong”, has put themselves in a very disadvantageous position. When you have done upholstery work yourself, you are able to evaluate the expected cost of having a job done for you by a shop.

Of course, once you have gained some experience in auto upholstery repair and replacement, you might find you no longer need a shop at all. In order to gain this experience, you should make your first attempts to replace, repair, or upgrade auto upholstery on a less expensive vehicle. This can either be a used car or a restoration project. This allows a bit of trial and error.

The repair and replacement of auto upholstery is not on the level of brain surgery, but neither is it a simple repair project. It is very much like furniture upholstery repair. After all the car seats are really just the furniture of the car’s interior. Many people with skills in furniture upholstery repair can use these skills with an automobile job as well. There are a number of books and manuals that can walk you through the steps of an auto upholstery repair job. You should not be afraid to give it a try and the savings will be ample reward, but do not go into it thinking it is simple. It is a definite skill.
