St. Louis, Mo. –Maryville University of St. Louis is the only university in the country to receive the NCAA Division II President’s Award for Academic Success with a 100 percent, four-year graduation rate for its student athletes.

The announcement, made yesterday (March 14), includes Maryville among 26 Division II colleges and universities that received the award for academic success rates of 90 percent or higher.

Maryville University President Mark Lombardi said the honor reflects Maryville’s vision of being one of the outstanding private universities in the country. “This is an important recognition of the outstanding quality of our student-athletes, coaching staff and faculty as they all pursue excellence inside and outside the classroom,” he said.

It is another indication that Maryville University’s national reputation is growing.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Maryville the No. 1 over-performing university in the country in December. Maryville is one of only three St. Louis institutions in the national universities category to achieve ranked status in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges – 2013 publication.

Simon Fraser University in the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada also received honors with a 100 percent graduation mark. It is the NCAAs first international member institution.

Pat O’Brien, president of West Texas A&M University and chair of the Division II Presidents Council said, “This is the second year for this award and the first in which any institution has reported an Academic Success Rate of 100 percent. Maryville and Simon Fraser deserve enormous credit for achieving such excellence over a four-year period. In fact, all of the institutions on the list deserve a high degree of respect.”

Maryville University Athletics Director Marcus Manning said the award reflects Maryville’s commitment to its student athletes. “Experiencing success in the classroom and ultimately graduating is all part of the transformational experience Maryville students should have,” he said. “This is a great honor and it reflects who we are and what we value.”

Maryville University is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. William Jewell College, another GVLC member institution, was also recognized with a 99 percent academic success rate.

Some 26 schools received accolades from the Division II Academic Requirements Committee. The division’s Academic Success Rate measures graduation rates for student athletes, including transfer students and those not receiving athletically related financial aid. The inclusion of student athletes who do not receive athletically related financial aid distinguishes the Division II model from Division I’s Graduation Success Rate.

LOUIS — Rawlings Sporting Goods and Maryville University, two highly regarded St. Louis organizations, announced today during a news conference at Busch Stadium that Rawlings has named the University’s signature, sport business management program, creating the first corporate-named sport business management program in the nation.

Rawlings President and CEO Robert Parish made the announcement and said Rawlings Sporting Goods is extremely pleased to establish the formal tie with Maryville. “We have worked with Maryville University for many years and today we recognize more formally the caliber of the Sport Business Management faculty, the program and Maryville’s students,” he said. “Graduates of the Rawlings Sport Business Management Program will play pivotal roles in the business of sport. As alumni and undergraduates, they have already brought invaluable insight to marketing research and product development efforts at Rawlings. Organizations in St. Louis and beyond will benefit as these outstanding men and women pursue careers in the industry.”

Parish and Maryville University President Mark Lombardi unveiled a new logo for the program at the event.

Lombardi said the partnership moves Maryville to the next level. “We thank Rawlings for believing in Maryville as much as we believe in Rawlings,” he said. “We are pleased to align ourselves with an international corporation with a rich tradition that reflects our core values of excellence and continuous learning. Our students will gain invaluable insight by working with executives at Rawlings and Maryville University athletics teams will have access to the newest equipment and uniforms.”

St. Louis Cardinals President William DeWitt III was on hand for the festivities. “We are excited to see two of our great partners joining forces to prepare the next generation of sports business leaders,” DeWitt said. “The Rawlings Sport Business Management Program at Maryville should benefit both our industry and our community as it attracts some of the best students from around the country to its innovative program.”

Jason Williams, assistant dean of the Simon School of Business, the director of the Rawlings Sport Business Management Program and the initiator of the agreement, said the University’s partnership with Rawlings, the premier sporting goods manufacturer in the United States, would enhance the education Maryville students receive. “We know students and parents value a program that teaches practical industry skills. Our agreement with Rawlings will give our sport business management graduates those practical skills, setting them apart in a highly competitive industry,” Williams said.

Students will work with Rawlings executives on a variety of new and on-going projects and will have access to some of the most influential leaders in the industry – an opportunity rarely available to undergraduates. That access will enhance student learning through real-world projects that Maryville will integrate into its curriculum. Each term, Rawlings will select one business graduate student for a paid assistantship, and many undergraduate students will engage in a variety of additional projects.

Rawlings Senior Vice President of Product Art Chou, who also often teaches at Maryville as an adjunct professor, said, “We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Maryville University and the newly named Rawlings Sport Business Management program. We are excited to help train the sports business leaders of tomorrow in addition to being actively involved with a premier NCAA Division II athletics program. Our congratulations to President Lombardi on his vision of excellence – we look forward to helping Maryville create one of the leading sports business management experiences in the country.”

Maryville’s sport business management students are involved each term with Rawlings and other organizations including the St. Louis Sports Commission, the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Blues, the St. Louis Rams and the Missouri Valley Conference. Students also complete internships at other locations across the country. Representatives from those organizations also attended the news conference. John Rooney, who broadcasts the Cardinals games with partner Mike Shannon, emceed the event.

The move boosts Maryville’s athletics programs. Rawlings will design and supply uniforms and equipment for Maryville’s basketball, baseball and softball teams, and will provide practice jerseys, other equipment and clothing. The Saints compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Maryville University’s Director of Athletics Marcus Manning said the agreement creates a unique opportunity for academics and athletics at Maryville to collaborate with a national company such like Rawlings. “This partnership will benefit our students, faculty, staff and entire campus community. As our official athletics supplier, Rawlings will greatly enhance our efforts in developing the Saints brand while providing access to cutting-edge products. This is truly a game-changing moment for Maryville University, and we are very grateful and very excited.”

Rawlings will develop an online store for Maryville. Students will also work with the company on special events and research projects. About 90 students are enrolled in the program that builds students expertise with unique classroom experiences, internships in professional sports and volunteer opportunities.

ABOUT THIS AGREEMENT

This agreement builds on an established relationship between Maryville University and Rawlings Sporting Goods. This is a university-wide agreement that builds Maryville’s academic and athletics programs. Maryville’s sport business management program becomes the first corporate-named sports business management program in the country as the Rawlings Sport Business Management Program.

Michael Pollan – Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation

Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m.

This is a ticketed event

Chaminade College Preparatory School, Skip Viragh Center for the Arts, 425 S. Lindbergh

In Cooked, Michael Pollan explores the enduring power of the four classical elements _fire, water, air, and earth _to transform the stuff of nature into delicious things to eat and drink. Apprenticing himself to a succession of culinary masters, Pollan learns how to grill with fire, cook with liquid, bake with bread and ferment everything from cheese to beer. In the course of his journey, he discovers that the cook stands squarely between nature and culture. Both realms are transformed by cooking, and so, in the process, is the cook. Ticket packages are available at brownpapertickets.com.

Pollan is the author of four New York Times bestsellers: Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual; In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto; The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals and The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World. The Omnivore’s Dilemma was named one of the ten best books of 2006 by both The New York Times and The Washington Post.

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University of St. Louis has been named the No. 1 over-performing university in the nation as cited by U.S. News & World Report and re-reported by The Huffington Post.

Experts at U.S. News & World Report looked at data from the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2013, then took peer assessment and compared it to actual rankings. Maryville University’s performance is 87 places above its peer assessments.

Maryville University President Mark Lombardi said the report enhances the value of all Maryville University degrees. “This shows we are doing outstanding work for our students inside and outside the classroom and reminds us that in higher education great reputation lags behind great performance,” Lombardi said. “Studies such as this one communicate to parents, students, other universities and prospective employers of our graduates that Maryville University exemplifies a daily commitment to excellence.”

Maryville, founded in 1872, entered the National Universities category of U.S. News & World Report rankings in 2012. It is one of only three St. Louis institutions that are ranked. The others are Washington University and St. Louis University. Maryville is also highly ranked by Forbes and Kiplinger’s as a best value.

As a private, independent university, Maryville enrolls 4,203 students and offers 50 undergraduate majors, 10 master’s degrees and four doctoral degrees. Maryville has created its outstanding reputation based on academic outcomes, small classes, individualized student attention and academic excellence.

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University is part of a consortium of nearly 40 colleges and universities launching a new website to promote international education in Missouri. The Study Missouri consortium began in 2009 to encourage opportunities for international students to study in Missouri and for domestic students to study abroad.

The new website profiles international students and looks at why they chose to study in Missouri. The site also profiles Missouri students about the value of their experiences abroad. Students and parents contemplating study abroad will find resources and links to Study Missouri member institutions and sponsors. A calendar of events lists international education meetings and events around the state. The new website is available at www.studymissouri.net

The goals of Study Missouri fit well with Maryville’s strong commitment to international education, which draws strength from relationships with other institutions. Maryville’s Director of the Center for Global Education James E. Harf said, “Maryville University’s global mission is to internationalize the university and prepare our students to become globally ready, armed with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to function effectively in today’s globalized society.” Maryville’s campus and overseas programs encourage students to appreciate the diversity of the human condition and to develop the desire and capacity to become engaged in addressing the issues of a global society, Harf explained.

Maryville administers a comprehensive, short-term study abroad program led by faculty on behalf of a seven-institution consortium called the Missouri Study-Abroad Inter-Collegiate Consortium (MOSAIC). Harf explained MOSAIC’s mission is to provide a range of summer programs, staffed by faculty from member institutions. It is open to all collegiate students, from member institutions and other colleges throughout the United States. Faculty members from MOSAIC institutions offer the courses. Maryville administers the programs as well as the academic transcripts for MOSAIC. For summer 2013, faculty-led programs include Oxford/London (England), Limerick (Ireland), Florence (Italy), and Madrid (Spain).

Other schools in MOSAIC include Central Methodist University, Columbia College, Culver-Stockton College, Fontbonne University, Missouri Valley College and Millersville University.

On campus, Maryville University is working to expand its international reach. The University’s new Director of International Admissions Kirstin Kahaloa recently returned from a trip to the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

She is part of a new group of admissions officials from eight schools, calling itself the Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota (MIM) group. Kahaloa traveled to the Philippines independently on behalf of Maryville, but visited the countries with the MIM tour, so that overseas schools could learn more about several Midwest institutions at once.

Currently, Maryville has more than 90 international students, with China, Saudi Arabia and Kenya as the three top international countries that students come from.

Kahaloa notes that a strong presence of international students helps shape the campus. “Students learn about the world by having international students here. In a globalized world, students need to know how to communicate with others from around the world.”

Other schools involved with the MIM group include the University of Missouri, Truman State University, Saint Louis University, St. Olaf College, St. Catherine’s University, the University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College.

The number of international students in Missouri grew to more than 16,000 in 2012, up 6.3 percent over last year, according to the just-released Open Doors Report. Missouri is 13th in the nation in the number of international students enrolled in the state’s colleges and universities. More than a quarter of international students studying in Missouri are from China, followed by India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Nepal/Japan. Most international students pay full tuition at Missouri institutions. Their total expenditures in Missouri last year were estimated to be $417.8 million.

The number of Missouri students who studied abroad declined slightly, from just over 5,000 to 4,650.

Commissioner of Higher Education David Russell says international education pays big dividends to students who take advantage of it. “Studying in a foreign land enriches you academically, culturally and personally,” Russell said. “It stretches your intellectual capacity to read and converse in a foreign language, gives you a deeper understanding of other cultures and values, and expands your ability to adapt to new situations. Increasingly, employers look for employees who can bring that global familiarity and comfort level.”

Chad Stebbins, president of the Study Missouri board of directors, said the redesigned site is a great user-friendly tool. “The new website can help international students choose the college that fits their academic aspirations and pocketbook,” Stebbins said. “Missouri students who want to study abroad can also use the website to find Study Missouri member institutions that offer high quality academic programs anywhere in the world.”
