Demonstrates the skills and competence to process/prepare patients for venipuncture/stick.<br>a. Positively identifies patient according to department policy.<br>b. Confirms accuracy of all labels and requisitions according to dept policy.<br>c. Develops a relationship with the patient that is comforting and demonstrates confidence for the venipuncture/stick.<br>d. Properly instruct patients to obtain urine samples and/or 24-hour collections of urine samples and all other samples as needed.<br>2. Demonstrates the skills and competence to accurately interpret and complete laboratory requisitions and/or place electronic orders.<br>a. Completes the laboratory requisition to include all necessary information; the legible documentation of assigned phlebotomy code, collection date, and other required information.<br>b. Properly completes electronic order in TOS and/or Lattice as necessary.<br>c. Follows procedures for obtaining and#x201c;standing orderand#x201d; information according to dept policy.<br>d. Follows all requirements for the Blood Bank (initials, date, patient name and medical record number on all tubes and requisitions.).<br>e. Follows department policies related to the collection of and#x201c;discharge/transferand#x201d; and and#x201c;statand#x201d; and timed collections.<br>3. Demonstrates the skill and competence necessary to perform the venipuncture/stick.<br>a. Selects the best area available for blood drawing.<br>b. Demonstrates skill with various types of needles and other collection equipment.<br>c. Follows and#x201c;order of drawand#x201d; standards at all times.<br>d. Follows procedures for the appropriate collection of blood cultures to avoid contamination of specimen.<br>e. Removes the tourniquet according to dept policy<br>f. Labels all samples in accordance with dept policy<br>g. Checks the wound site before leaving the patient.<br>4. Follows all Infection Control Guidelines throughout the venipuncture/stick procedure.<br>a. At all times wears appropriate personal protective equipment.<br>b. Follow Hospital Hand Hygiene policy between all procedures and patients.<br>5. Demonstrates knowledge of collection criteria: correct tube(s), correct volume, stability requirements and/or special handling.<br>6. Follows all directions, as they are applicable to study protocols.<br>a. Cooperates with principle investigator and/or supervisor to draw appropriate tubes for tests requested and meet requirements for timed collections.<br>7. Completes phlebotomy check sheets, logbooks and other documentation as required.<br>8. Demonstrates professional behavior and customer service skills at all times.<br>a. Answers all calls and returns all pages with name, department and greeting.<br>b. Effectively interacts with Supervisor, co-workers and clinical staff to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.<br>c. Takes vital signs, performs phlebotomy and obtains EKGs when appropriate.<br>4. Assists with determining reason for visit or phone call, flags for immediate responses, takes<br>messages appropriately and notifies appropriate medical staff.<br>5. Performs patient education and counseling in predetermined areas and various testing<br>(vision/hearing), under proper direction.<br>6. Assists with receiving test results for physicians and calling patient with follow up of labs and<br>tests under direction of physician.<br>7. Assists with varied procedures, such as blood pressure checks, throat cultures and suture<br>removals, as directed and under the supervision of the RN or MD.<br>8. Answers practice phones, takes messages, and schedules appointments when appropriate, in addition to assisting with administrative work.<br>9. Escorts patients and labs/supplies to other areas of the hospital, as requested.<br>10. Clean instruments and equipment, following infection control guidelines.<br>11. This individual must be highly energetic with strong interpersonal skills and flexibility.  He/she will work as a team with 2 other Medical Assistants and 5 secretaries, with overall responsibility for maintaining efficiency of patient flow.  The Medical Assistant will also greet patients in an appropriate manner, take vital signs, assist with routine and complex procedures, and assist in determining reason for patient visit. The Medical Assistant will maintain patient rooms, setting up and stocking as appropriate, and order supplies for the practice. Administrative responsibilities will include, without limitation, all generaly accepted office responsibilities, making appointments, filing, answering phones, preparing correspondence, preparing charts, obtaining referrals, and paperwork from referring physician offices. <br><br><b>PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</b><br>Clincial Duties<br>1. Provides a variety of services which include: vital signs, suture/staple removal, dressing changes using sterile techniques.  Assist physicians in all minor procedures and wound care as requested.    Enter all vital signs after patient encounter into the LMR system.<br>2. Responsible for the judgement of room rotations and assignments for physicians.  This includes the pre-evaluation of charts to determine the need for possible diagnostic procedures in exam room and setting out supplies for MD.<br>3. Booking appointments, surgeries and radiology/diagnostic testing and communicating clearly to the patients by following office protocol.   <br>4. Ensuring any pathology specimens are labeled and delivered in a timely manner by end of day to pathology department.<br>5. Triage clinical questions to MD and often handling simple patient clinical inquiries on behalf of MD.  Utilizing LMR clinical messaging to document information triaged and update MD. <br><br>Administrative Duties<br>1. Cross-trained to work at front reception desk as requested.  Duties include: patient check in/out, answering any questions the patient may have, and any other related administrative tasks.  <br>2. Maintain all filing/organization systems designed for the accurate tracking of patient tests, films, etc.<br>3. Prepare and review charts for upcoming weekand#x2019;s clinic, including obtaining referrals and ensuring patientand#x2019;s records from referring MD offices have been received.<br>4. Perform all other duties as assigned, including all generally accepted office functions such as faxing, filing, photocopying, completion of forms and mailing of physician referral letters as required. </td></tr><tr> <td valign="top" align="left"><br><font size=1>Requirements:</font></td></tr><tr> <td valign="top" align="left"><b>QUALIFICATIONS:</b><br>1. Successful completion of accredited Medical Assisting program.<br>2. Must possess analytical abilities and sound judgement needed for interpretation of complex data, and documentation of pertinent patient information and when it is appropriate and necessary to involve MD in patient questions.<br>2.
