Holocaust Remembrance Day

Question: Yes, on this race incarceration in… I mean, removal by the Israeli authorities of three Palestinian legislators from the International Red Cross offices in East Jerusalem… I mean, and so I understand article 49 of [inaudible] Geneva Convention prohibits Israel, the occupying Power, to remove these people from there and take them away. Do you have any comment? Has the Secretary-General any comment on that?

Spokesperson: I don’t have any specific comment on that, Masood, at the moment, no. No, I don’t. Yes?

Question: But you are aware of this?

Masood was so concerned that he again asked about the Palestinian legislators on January 24 and received the answer that the spokesperson had no update.

The New York Times reported on the incident and detailed the following information.

Cecilia Goin, a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross, said by telephone that the organization had informed the three from the start that they could stay on the premises, but that the Red Cross did not enjoy diplomatic immunity and could not prevent the Israeli authorities from arresting them. The organization had also informed the Israeli authorities that the three were on the premises, she said.

Concerning the president’s bid for re-election this November, Gillerman said that the changes in regimes in the Middle East make it more imperative for a change in favor of what he said is the need for a stronger president.

Keith Koffler has written an article titled Obama to Ignore Order to Appear in Atlanta Court.

You would think that an order by an Atlanta judge for President Obama to appear in court today would be major news. I looked for an article about the topic at Politico but haven't been able to find one. Here is one at CBSAtlanta and one at WND. But most of the MSM are ignoring this issue. If they ignore it, will it go away?

A number of days ago, it was reported that the New York Philharmonic's music director interrupted a performance due to a ringing cellphone.

It’s the dreaded sound at any live performance — a ringing cellphone.

That’s what happened Tuesday night at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall during the final movement of Gustav Mahler’s Ninth Symphony by the New York Philharmonic. Maestro Alan Gilbert was forced to stop the orchestra until the phone was silenced.

This morning, I caught an article in the Huffington Post about a Slovakian violist who incorporated a cell phone ringtone into his recital after he was interrupted while playing. The description section of the YouTube video states that the concert took place at the Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Presov Slovakia.
The following is an excerpt from the article.

"This video of Slovakian violist Lukas Kmit improvising around Nokia's signature ringtone is so good, many have thought it was a sly piece of advertising for the Finnish telecommunications giant. But, as it turns out, it's 100% the real deal, with the classical fiddler - our term - interrupted mid-performance by an inconsiderant mobile phone owner before taking the tune and playing it on the violin himself. I will never forget how I attended a lecture given by a distinguished speaker who asked, at the onset of her lecture, for cellphones to be turned off. Sure enough, she was interrupted by a cellphone a few minutes into the lecture. Once again, she asked that cellphones be turned off. A few minutes later, there was another interruption.
So let's be more considerate and SHUT OFF our cellphones.
Hamodia recently had a letter from a reader aboout how his son came home from school saying how much the rebbe loved his cellphone as he was always on it during recess when his responsibility was to be watching over the boys playing in the yard.

He has done this often in the past regarding Israel (examples – here and here). This time the ex-President erroneously blamed Israel for the flight of Palestinian Arab Christians from “Palestine.”

The siyum

Approximately one year ago, the members of the shul where my husband davens decided to take upon themselves to learn mishnayot leilui nishmat a rebbe who had passed away many years before. The idea was for the members to complete the entire mishnayot within the year and have a siyum dinner the day of the rebbe's yahrzheit.

Someone signed my husband up for one of the more difficult masekhet mishnayot. Since then, my husband assiduously reviewed the masekhet every Friday evening after our meal, as well as after the Sabbath noon meal. Two weeks ago, he finally completed the masekhet.

This evening, the shul will be marking the yarzheit with a siyum dinner. As I woke up this morning, I contemplated what made my husband follow through on the undertaking. Surely, he is a man of integrity and tries to fulfill what he promises. But, it is more than that. Even if no one in shul would be any the wiser if my husband hadn't completed the masekhet, the One Above would have known. We live with the knowledge that we are accountable to Hashem each and every day.

As the members of the shul joyfully celebrate accomplishing a momentous task, I hope they will undertake a new goal for the coming year.

The first deed of the day

Rav Moshe Leib Sassov says that if a person wants to make sure his day is one filled with Avodas Hashem and avoid aveiros, he should try to make sure his first deed is a good one. Since Mitzva Goreres Mitzva, once you have the first mitzva under your belt, the law of this mishna says that it should continue, as you are already propelled in the right direction. This is Mirumaz in the pasuk (Bo 13:2), "Kadesh Li Kol Bichor", the first action should be designated for Hashem.
However a person may still worry that his first mitzva may not be done wholeheartedly and therefore this plan will not help. Therefore he says, have rachmanus on another Jew. Even if your intention is not pure, the mitzva will still stand tall as you have helped another Jew regardless. This is Mirumaz in the next words, "Peter Kol" to patur yourself from all worries, "Rechem" have rachmanus on a Jew.

Even with this a person may be concerned that the Jew he helped, is not worthy and therefore his mercy was misplaced and not considered a Mitzva. To this says Rav Moshe Leib, we only need to continue the next words of the Pasuk, "BaAdam U'Babiheima" whether he was a worthy man or an animal and not worthy of kindness, "Li", Hashem says, leave that to Me. You will get your S'char either way.

Dov Linzer has wrote an op-ed a few days ago in the New York Times in which he attempts to define the term modesty according to the teachings of Jewish tradition.

Jewish tradition teaches men and women alike that they should be modest in their dress. But modesty is not defined by, or even primarily about, how much of one’s body is covered. It is about comportment and behavior. It is about recognizing that one need not be the center of attention. It is about embodying the prophet Micah’s call for modesty: learning “to walk humbly with your God.”

I walked into the fitness center. There is a small room with exercise equipment solely for women. The TV set was tuned to America's Next Top Model and Tyra Banks had to select one person for elimination. One model was deemed not to be model material. It wasn't because of her looks but because of her manners. One of the judges proclaimed her to be impolite. Ms. Banks dismissed the contestant by telling her that two words were missing from her vocabulary. She didn't know how to say "thank you."

This morning I read a poignant article about a young woman who suffered from lupus who showed gratitude to the very end.

A North Carolina student college student suddenly collapsed and died in class on her 21st birthday on Tuesday afternoon.

"Thank you God for another year of life," Gardner-Webb University student Ariane Noelle Patterson tweeted some seven hours before becoming short of breath and falling to the floor during her religious studies class, Charlotte's WSOC TV reports.

What the Bible leaves out is sometimes almost as interesting as what it puts in. Take the list in this week’s reading (Ex. 6:15) of the sons of Simeon. There were six sons – Yemu’el, Yamin, Ohad, Yachin, Zohar and Sha’ul. Now look at the list in B’midbar (Num. 26:12). Lo and behold, a few changes in spelling, but no Ohad!

Ibn Ezra is of the view that he must have died in Egypt or the wilderness, leaving no descendants to be part of Simeon’s group of families.

We wonder whether Jewish history would have been different had Ohad survived and left progeny. It doesn’t really help, though, to apply the word “if” to historical study. If circumstances had been different… if other influences had been at work… if external events had not affected us in the same way… if a certain leader had not been there, if we had reacted differently, chosen a different option, gone somewhere else, married into another family – there are countless speculative possibilities and permutations

Looking backwards in this way is highly intriguing and highly unsatisfying. The realistic course is not to say, “I wish things had been different”, but “Whatever transpires, I have to handle it wisely!”

American Thinker has an article titled NY Times' big travel spread on Jerusalem through the eyes of an anti-Zionist atheist.

The New York Times devotes three full pages in its weekly travel section to Jerusalem seen through the eyes of a writer soured on Israel and Judaism. Naturally one could expect that. This is after all the secular, liberal Times which still hasn't reconciled itself to the rebirth of a Jewish state. Right at the start of his article ("Lost in Jerusalem" Jan.15) Matt Gross spells out his peculiar bona fides to tackle Jerusalem as a travel writer. Among all the countries in the world, he writes, "there was only one that I had absolutely zero interest in ever visiting: Israel." Why? Because "to me, a deeply secular Jew, Israel has always felt less like a country than a politically iffy burden."

Merciful protectors?

"Ki Toavas Mitzrayim Nizbach" (Va'eira 8:22). Moshe said Bnei Yisroel could not sacrifice Korbonos to Hashem in Mitzrayim because animal slaughter appalled the Mitzrim. The Shulchan Gavo'a brings from Rav Yaakov Yosef the Magid of Vilna that the Mitzrim fancied themselves as the saviors of the downtrodden. They were the protector's of the poor defenseless animals, especially the sheep which didn't even have its own set of horns, poor things!

Any middos that are not firmly rooted in Yiras Hashem, says the Magid, are not viable in the long term. These same merciful protectors were the worst slave drivers in history, with their brutal oppression of an entire nation living in their midst. Sure they were still merciful to their animal. In fact far more merciful than they were to humans.

Senior citizens

The following is a Torah thought by Rabbi Dr. Raymond Apple.

I knew someone who had a tremendous memory for the folk sayings of pre-war Jewish Eastern Europe. One of the things he used to quote was about the sometimes difficult onset of old age. “Old people,” he said, “should never be born!”

I am not sure of all the implications of the saying. I do know that some people of 20 are already old (a certain professor whom I knew in his youth reminds me that when he was still a teenager I told him, “You speak like an old man”). Some people remain youthful and energetic well into their senior years.

Look at this week’s reading. Who were the leaders of the people, God’s agents in bringing Israel out of Egypt? Moses aged 80 and Aaron aged 83 (Ex. 7:7). According to Sforno, the Torah deliberately specifies their ages to show that their enthusiasm and energy were equal to the task.

In our own age, a whole series of great spiritual leaders of American and world Jewry were still influential until well into old age – Rav Soloveitchik, Rav Moshe Feinstein, the Lubavitcher Rebbe and many others. The advantage of being a leader in one’s senior years is the ability to disregard things that are really not so important, and to concentrate on the job in hand.

Propaganda for kids

It was the first week in October in Newton, an upscale suburb of Boston, and Tony Pagliuso's daughter, a sophomore at Newton South High School, was visibly disturbed. When Tony asked her the problem, she showed him a passage from the chapter she was assigned in her World History Class. It was a chapter called "Women, an Essay," from a supplemental text called the The Arab World Notebook. In a paragraph devoted to women "in the struggle for independence from colonial powers," we find:

Over the past four decades, women have been active in the Palestinian resistance movement. Several hundred have been imprisoned, tortured, and killed by Israeli occupation forces since the latest uprising, "intifada," in the Israeli occupied territories.

Pagliuso assured his daughter that this was "total propaganda," and took the matter up with the young teacher, a Miss Jessica Engel, who couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.

Rectifying a wrong

It was bravery at the highest level: William Shemin defied German machine gun fire to sprint across a World War I battlefield and pull wounded comrades to safety. And he did so no fewer than three times.

Then, with the platoon’s senior soldiers wounded or killed, the 19-year-old American took over command of his unit and led it to safety, even after a bullet pierced his helmet and lodged behind an ear.

Yet Shemin never earned the nation’s highest military citation, the Medal of Honor — a result, many suspected, of the fact that he was Jewish at a time when discrimination ran rampant throughout the U.S. military.

Eternity

The Ramban says that between the time that Moshe ran away from Mitzrayim and the time he arrived at the well in Midyan, sixty years had elapsed. The Sefer HaMasiyos tells how Moshe became a powerful King in Kush and fought many wars. Yet the Torah doesn't give the slightest hint to any of this. In fact the pasuk says Paroh wanted to kill Moshe and then, "Vayivrach Moshe Mipnei Paroh Vayeishev B'Eretz Midyan." (Shemos 2:15). In one pasuk, in one breath, the Torah says he ran away from Mitzrayim and suddenly was in Midyan. Why the absolute total ignorance of these years?

Rav Michel Feinstein says that we see a very important lesson here. The Torah is about Nitzchiyus, eternity. Nothing that is not related to eternity is mentioned or even hinted. Every last story, word, and letter are eternal. Despite that half the life of our great hero Moshe was as a major world leader, it made no difference whatsoever as far as the nitzchiyus of Klal Yisrael was concerned, and therefore was omitted even in any subtle hint.

"We must realize," says Rav Michel, "that when we come up to Shamayim the only thing that will be looked at are the things that contributed to our nitzchiyus. We may have been busy with great accomplishments during our life, but they will disappear in the eternal world. We will be quite saddened to come to Shamayim with only a tiny fraction of our lives that actually mattered."

Revach has an article about the former Chief Rabbi of Antwerp on the occasion of his yahrzheit.

All his life Rav Kreiswirth was involved in tzedoka and helping other people. In the latter part of his life Rav Kreiswirth was very active collecting tzedoka for Hachnosas Kallah for poor orphans. During a severe illness someone was sent to the Steipler Gaon to daven on his behalf and give him a bracha. The Steipler told him that it says in the mishna we read in davening every day "U'Bikur Cholim, Vhachnosas Kallah, U'Levoyas HaMeis". From here we see that between getting sick and being buried comes helping brides get married. Rav Kreiswirth then accepted upon himself to raise money to marry off poor orphans and made a miraculous recovery.

Rabbi Chaim Kreiswirth was taken at the age of 82 on 16 Teves 5762. Yehi Zicro Boruch.

A suburban Cleveland church where the father of pop star Katy Perry delivered a sermon that drew accusations of anti-Semitism has released an apology in which he says he regrets his "hurtful and ugly language."

...In his apology, Hudson says that with the help of God, he won't again make such comments.

"We can do lots of harm even to those we love simply by using words irresponsibly. ... I apologize for the hurt that I caused my Jewish friends," he said.
