This episode was actually recorded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. What a great trip. As you can hear from the audio quality, recording in a hotel room is not great (but beats no recording at all). I had awesome Dim Sum at a place called Din Tai Fung in KL. It’s my favorite place (they have locations throughout Asia.)

How To Do Niche Keyword Research (Part 1)

In the last several episodes, we’ve touched on several aspects of how to do keyword research, but they have all been in bits and pieces. In episode 049 I discussed some things to consider when dealing with the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. In episode 053, we talked about finding Niche Keywords and in episode 054 we touched on Niche Keyword Competition. In this episode, I try to pull it all together for you in a way that hopefully will make some sense. When you are doing keyword research, you basically need to do three things

Understand what you are trying to accomplish
Figure out which what keywords are popular
Understand how hard it will be to rank for those keywords

How to do Keyword research

One note: A lot of times when I say “keyword” I really mean “keyword phrase”. It’s the words that people type into Google when the are looking for something.

Increasingly, the search engine is not only Google, but also Bing/Yahoo and other engines as well. Another thing to note is that web search is not the only kind of search. Other really large search engines include YouTube and iTunes. Amazon is another one (but you don’t have any control over that one really).

There is a very cool infographic on SearchEngineLand that gives a pretty good overview of keyword research. We can adapt that model for affiliate marketing and add to it to come up with a process for keyword research.

1. Determine Your Goal

Figure out what you are trying to do. What action do you want the searcher to take when he comes to your site from the search engine. This is called conversion. You want to “convert” a visitor into something else — a subscriber, a facebook fan, a customer, etc.

Usually with affiliate marketing you are trying get traffic to your site with the hope that the visitor will click a link and buy a product that you are promoting.

In the case of the corn sheller site I am ranking for several corn sheller related keyword phrases. One is buy corn sheller online. Clearly, my goal for that keyword (and most other keywords on that site) is for people to end up on eBay and make a purchase.

Another common example might be converting someone to your email list.

2. Brainstorm for keywords

You need to know what people are actually typing into the search engines. There are tools that can help you discover that, but it helps if you will start by imagining what you might type if you were the searcher.

Put yourself in the mind of the searcher
Consider the commercial intent of the keywords if appropriate
Put your list into the Google Keyword Tool
Think about the long tail.

Here is what SEOMoz has to say about the long tail…

It’s wonderful to deal with keywords that have 5,000 searches a day, or even 500 searches a day, but in reality, these “popular” search terms actually make up less than 30% of the searches performed on the web. The remaining 70% lie in what’s called the “long tail” of search. The long tail contains hundreds of millions of unique searches that might be conducted a few times in any given day, but, when taken together, they comprise the majority of the world’s demand for information through search engines.

Don’t assess keywords based on their traffic, assess them on their potential value.

As many of you know that follow me on Facebook, I am currently traveling from Dallas to Malaysia, and I got stuck in LAX because I missed my connection. Since I was stuck in a hotel room anyway, I decided to record this episode — and I was motivated by the main topic of handling customer feedback. This was both because I was around a lot of angry customers at the airport last night, and because I got some great feedback from listener Jack.

Corn Sheller Update

I put AdSense on the corn sheller site, and the result was not great. I report my results and explain what the problem is. It has to do with the difference between the Search Network and the Content Network

There is a WordPress attack underway. You can read about it on the CERT site. Concern is creation of a massive high-bandwidth botnet.

Here are some things you should do right away

Update all themes, plugins and (of course) WordPress
Make sure that you do not have a user named “admin”
Install Limit Login Attempts plugin

Big thing last week was the end of the Forever Affiliate 6 week coaching program. I can say without a doubt that this is the best affiliate marketing course that I have ever been involved in. It was just awesome. As a result of the course, I have a 20 site plan for 2013 with the goal of having 10 brand new profitable sites by the end of the year.

I’m slower than some of the other people in the course because in addition to my day job, I have this crazy blog and podcast to maintain. My plan is still to report all the results to you as they happen. I have this awesome master control spreadsheet complete with tasks and target dates. I need to update that for “reporting” so that I can easily and accurately tell you what is going on….but the basic snapshot is like this. I have the process broken out into five major steps:

Niche selection — including finding an offer, finding keywords and profit testing
Site Build — this includes getting the domain up and running with WP
Post Content — includes ordering content and images and posting them
Monetize site — includes link tracking, offer placement, etc
Initial promotion — includes cheap promotion before sale for about a month
Paid testing — includes paid testing through PPC
Asset promotion — if the site makes sales, big promotion
Ongoing promotion — rankings achieved, ongoing promotion

Current status

14 niches identified
4 sites built
3 sites have content posted
1 site in initial promotion

Also working on a cool experiment with another 10 sites based on this report from John Leger and Josh Spaulding. The report shows how to make automatic sites in just 4 easy steps using Article Builder and Keyword Canine.

We have had more sniffles, fevers and other junk running around my house. I am starting to wonder if we are cursed. It’s really hard to work on your internet business when you don’t feel great, or when you are taking care of a sick little one. It’s one of the things that gets in the way.

Mark -I have for some time now been going down the road of affiliate/internet marketing, but the thought that is continually nagging in the back of my mind is that is this really worth the effort? I don’t mind at all working hard for something, and putting in the time, as I realize its not going to occur over night, but I don’t want to do it if its all for nothing and there is no payoff.

I guess I think about it this way – there are certain activities that a person can do that have higher values in an economy than other things. For example a doctor usually demands a higher salary than a clerk in a department store. And I know that if I want to make that higher salary of a doctor, I need to get the education etc. and thus there is a payoff for the effort.

But for internet marketing – there doesn’t appear to be any comparisons – to some extent it feels like I’m rolling dice – it might work and it might not – its a chance. I’m not looking for a guarantee – I just want to make sure I’m using my time wisely and not wasting it. Even if I develop a website that is in the center of my passion and interests, if its not making money and I’m not providing for my family, then its not a business, its a hobby. I heard it said that if you want to catch a whale then you have to go out to the sea where the whales are at- with internet marketing – I can’t figure out whether I’m fishing in the Pacific or fishing in a kiddie pool.

After listening back to the last several episodes about finding niches online, I was reminded about the critical importance of keyword research to everything we do in internet marketing. When it comes to selecting niches for affiliate marketing, one of the most critical criteria is whether or not your’ve going to have an audience for whatever project that you are about to undertake. SEMoz says it really well:

Keyword research is one of the most important, valuable, and high return activities in the search marketing field. Ranking for the “right” keywords can make or break your website. Through the detective work of puzzling out your market’s keyword demand, you not only learn which terms and phrases to target with SEO, but also learn more about your customers as a whole.

It’s not always about getting visitors to your site, but about getting the right kind of visitors. The usefulness of this intelligence cannot be overstated – with keyword research you can predict shifts in demand, respond to changing market conditions, and produce the products, services, and content that web searchers are already actively seeking. In the history of marketing, there has never been such a low barrier to entry in understanding the motivations of consumers in virtually every niche.

Hey Mark got a question. I have a site I am staring up that will be based on providing free test questions for people. I am getting really close to having my first mini test out. What I was wondering is how to promote the site on the search engines. Would it be better to go after the test itself or have each page target the question content?

That is a keyword research question fundamentally. You need to put yourself in the shoes of the person that you are targeting. They are trying to prepare for a test — and they are looking for sample questions. What are they typing in Google? Check those phrases. You probably want to target those initially unless you find them too low a volume or too competitive. In your thinking you need to consider what you plan to do with this “prospect” that you give free test questions to. Are you going to sell them a course on passing the test? If so, you’ll want to look at those keywords about studying for the test as well.

Regarding your specific question — again this is a question of intent. If there is search traffic for the question content AND that traffic is part of your target audience, they yes. BUT I expect this is NOT the case for you. Take the example of a computer technician exam. 99% of people searching for “How To Format A Hard Drive” are not searching for that because they are preparing for an exam. They are searching for that because they need to format their hard drive — so they are not your target market. Make sense?

Bagel Shop Blogger

It’s almost my 45th birthday.

The sobering fact is that my life is already half done. I’m not being morbid — I’m just doing math. Let’s face it. When I ask my insurance agent life insurance questions, he tells me that his actuarial table says that I will live until I am 87. This takes into account that I am not a smoker, that my grandfather had pancreatic cancer, and that I have already lived to the ripe old age of 45 (which, statistically puts me in the group of people that will not die before the age of 45, obviously).

So since my life is almost half done, I figure I should spend as much of it as possible doing stuff that I love. This morning, I stopped to meet with one of my old mentors and his wife. Actually, she is a mentor to me now too. They are 5 or 10 years older than me (more or less — she actually looks younger than me), but much, much wiser. I love them dearly. I stopped in to the bagel shop (they go there for coffee every morning) to talk to them about my day job. I got there early and had a cuppa joe and (you guessed it) a bagel.

It was quiet, and I was alone with my thoughts about how great my family is and how much I appreciate all the great stuff in my life. Sappy but true. I was just hanging out thinking deep thoughts. Since it was 6AM, I didn’t even worry about being late for my day job. It was my time, and I was spending it self-medicating with a warm caffeinated beverage.

The whole experience made me think how nice it would be to be a bagel shop blogger. Seriously.

So, I snapped a picture of the counter (every blog post needs a graphic), uploaded it to WordPress and started writing.

Years ago, when my oldest kids were in elementary school, I used to drop them off and grab a coffee at Starbucks on my way back to my day job. By 8AM I was usually busy working on my phone standing in line waiting on my Triple Grande Mocha as the emails piled in and I felt guilty about not being early to work. That Starbucks was in a nice part of town where lots of really rich people live. Now in Dallas, Texas when you say “rich people” we are talking about real money. Guys in khaki shorts and button down collar shirts wearing loafers from Neiman Marcus with no socks. In many cases the loafers cost more than my laptop.

I used to wonder — what do those guys do for a living? They were sitting around in their fancy casual clothes chatting about the weather with their other rich friends while I was late for work. How cool would it be to have that sort of freedom and independence?

I wonder how many of them where bagel shop bloggers taking a coffee break?

It’s a serious question. Internet business models are one of the few ways that you can make money that you can scale mostly independent of hours and employees. Consulting is awesome, but eventually you run out of hours in a day. My day job is awesome, but there are real limits to how much money I can make there. I can open a donut shop, but to make real money, I’ll need 10 donut shops, employees and a bunch of capital.

Not so for internet business. Not to say that internet business is easy money. But the potential to scale it is essentially limitless. Constraints are generally not geographic. Most internet businesses are automation friendly. Internet business can be scaled. And that’s what makes it awesome.

Hi from the UK Mark. I listen to your podcast regularly and am one of those ‘on the verge’ Internet marketers trying my best to get started.I get a little confused as to where you stand on the subject of affiliate marketing. On the one hand you actively support guys like pat Flynn who advocate finding a niche that you’re passionate about and build a business around that. On the other you seem to champion Andrew Hansen who seems far less choosy on the content of his sites with the major driver being to select niches that can make money.There does seem a bit of a conflict on this. In my mind you can only really recommend one method and not both. I did buy Andrew Hansen’s latest course (through your affiliate link I believe) but his approach is far more ‘mercenary’ (if that’s the right word) than Pat’s.Please clarify which side of the fence you’re actually on Mark if. You’d be so kind. Thanks.

- Then here’s what I check
  - Does the plugin have a large banner graphic. This is a relatively new feature within the plugin directory. It helps me know whether the plugin developers took the time to design something creative
  - Next I look at the LAST UPDATED field. I has to have had a revision in the last 6 months for me to consider it
  - Then I look at the number of downloads. If it has a lot, 10,000 or more, it’s probably legit
  - Lastly, I always look to see if it contains screenshots. Lots of plugins don’t so it’s hard to know which ones are good by seeing what the plugin looks like installed.
- Then I will highlight the plugin name and go back into WordPress and search within WordPress. This makes it much easier to install (you don’t have to download, etc.)

Free Niche Friday – Acne PLR Articles and Acne Keywords

OK — I know it’s not Friday, but no days in the week rhyme with “Niche” or “Niche Research”. And if this sticks, I will either do in on Friday or change the name. LOL

Josh and Jon have been talking about Keyword Canine a lot lately — they just launched version 2.0. KC is a really good niche discovery tool that I use almost every day — and I have also been working on niche research lately testing out Andrew Hansen’s new affiliate course. All of that niche work got me to thinking….

I’ve thought that it might be fun to pick a niche each week and do some quick and dirty keyword research using Keyword Canine, give out some simple PLR generated by Article Builder, and take a quick look at current offers generated by oDigger. I figure that it might result in interesting discussion or perhaps inspire a few people to create affiliate web sites.

I wanted to create a free website header for each niche too that would work in Thesis and other themes, but I cannot find a source for images that I could use and then give away. All of the license terms that I have looked at require a very expensive image license for web templates. No no headers for now….but I would love to hear your ideas on this.

Micro Site Profits Review (Updated)

Micro Site Profits is the latest excellent product from the famous internet marketing duo of Jason and Jeremy. Of course, Jason and Jeremy are the artists formerly known as Sterling and Jay of Internet Business Mastery Podcast fame.

Launched in September of 2012, the Micro Site Profits course promises to help new internet marketers make their first money online.

With the potential of turning a few dollars into significant income, Micro-site Profits is a very promising program. Created by two founders of the most popular Internet marketing podcast on iTunes, the Micro-site Profits program claims to do just that. It’s a simple, easy to follow course that can teach you how to make passive income online with just your computer.

Micro Site Profits: A Simple Approach

The general idea is this: You build small websites (micro-sites) that are focused on a particular topic, otherwise known as a “niche”. You then drive FREE traffic to your sites from Google, Bing and Yahoo by using search engine optimization (SEO) tactics and make money off of advertising.

The system even works with the constant changes Google makes to their search algorithm, which is beautiful because each update leaves some site owners scratching their heads and wondering what happened to their sites. What is Affiliate Marketing?

I am constantly asked the question “What is affiliate marketing?” So, don’t feel silly if you have the same question. When I started learning about internet business in 2007 I had no idea about affiliate marketing. I hate that feeling that you have when you are first trying to learn about something and you simply don’t know what all the words mean — so I created this post.

As I describe in the Affiliate Marketing Overview, affiliate marketing is a business model where you work to match offers (products, services, etc) with buyers (leads, visitors, traffic) and get a commission (usually after a sale). According to Wikipedia, affiliate marketing on the internet was invented and patented in 1989.

Since then, thousands of on-line businesses have set up affiliate programs. This means that these businesses are willing to pay you a commission if you will send buyers to their websites. The best example out there is Amazon.com. You send a visitor from your site to Amazon. If they buy something, you get a commission. It’s really that simple. (By simple, I mean easy to understand, not easy money).

In the kind of affiliate marketing that we discuss on this site, the goal is to find ways to get organic search traffic to your web site. Organic search traffic is a fancy way of saying “people searching for things in Google or Bing”. Searchers go to Google or Bing looking for information about something. They find your site. While on your site, visitors find special links to products and offers that you mention, advertise or recommend called “affiliate links”.

Affiliate links are clickable hyperlinks (those blue words that you click like this hyperlink here) that include a special code that identifies the visitor as someone that has come from your site. So, when the visitor leaves your site and goes to a merchant site (like amazon) to make a purchase, you get credit for the sale. The merchant pays a commission for sales made to visitors that came from your site. Its just like when you are in a fancy clothing store and the person at the register asks who helped you with your purchase. If it was Sally that helped you, then Sally gets a commission. Same idea for affiliate marketing on the internet. If you help you visitor find the merchant, then you get a commission when they buy.

My 2013 Internet Marketing Goals

It’s a bit of a slow start, but here are my plans for 2013. Three main goals are to take the blog to the next level, grow the podcast, and build 10-12 new affiliate sites this year (and tell you all about them).

Good morning. It’s Mark Mason from LateNightIM.com and I’m driving on my way to work here. This is sort of my new year. I’ve been digging around talking a little bit about how I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what I want to do in 2013, so I took a couple weeks at the beginning of the year to decide how to do that. I’ll be talking about that a little bit on the podcast in episode 43, but I just felt like getting on and giving you a little sneak peek of what was coming in 2013 on the Late Night Internet Marketing blog.

I’ve decided that there are really three things that I want to get accomplished in 2013. I think the great thing about all of the things in 2013 is they’re all focused on readers and listeners.

The first thing I want to do is I want to really get the blog up to the next level as a resource for people who are trying to make money online in affiliate marketing. In my mind LateNightIM.com is a place where people can go and from start to finish learn everything that they need to know about how to make money on the internet with affiliate marketing in some organized way.

I kind of have the framework for that up on LateNightIM.com. The big thing I want to do in 2013 is really flesh that out. Basically I’d like to have really well organized free information that’s as good as a lot of the $97 courses out there that you can buy. That’s what I’d like to do and I’m going to accomplish that in 2013.

One of the things that goes along with that is a new auto responder series. My auto responder series from MasonWorld.com, where the blog used to be, is getting pretty old and needs to be rewritten. So two major goals for the blog are really to build out this free excellent resource for affiliate marketers and to build an auto responder that really delivers value to subscribers, including current subscribers. So that’s what’s on tap in 2013 for the blog.

The way I’ll accomplish is once I have this getting started framework that you can see over on the first page of LateNightIM.com then I’ll fill that out. I have these five articles about how to get started in affiliate marketing, those will link to deeper articles, and sort of as you unpeel the onion there you’ll have a nice siloed structure for how to get started in affiliate marketing and it should be really nice. I hope to include videos, some of which will be made in my car. I hope to post that content over the course of the year on a regular basis, hopefully every Monday.

The other set of content that I want to deliver, of course, is the podcast. Effective immediately I’ll be taking that back to weekly podcasting every Thursday. On that podcast I’ll be talking about how to do affiliate marketing, but I’ll also incorporate interviews and listener questions. So there will be about two affiliate marketing solo episodes per month, one interview per month (I’m hoping), and one listener feedback episode per month, for a total on average of four episodes per month.

That’s the plan to rotate through that schedule every four weeks, starting this week. In fact, I’m intending to even do a couple of catch up episodes this week so I can end up with 50 or so episodes this year. It would really be cool if the first episode in January of next year was the 100th episode. I would need to do about 60 episodes this year to get that done, so that’s kind of the secret unannounced goal, to be doing the 100th episode the first week in January.

The third thing I’m going to do is I want to start doing more affiliate marketing. I’ve kind of not been doing as many new sites lately. So what I’ve decided to do is I have two really close friends that are launching or have launched recently courses related to affiliate marketing that I think are excellent for beginners.

The other course that I think is going to be really excellent, I’m in the process of reviewing it now, is from my buddy Andrew Hansen. That launch is in February and you can find that at LateNightIM.com/fa, for Forever Affiliate. That course is also going to be excellent, I’ve used Andrew’s materials before so I know what to expect there as well.

Because those two courses are so excellent and because of all the free content that I’m intending to provide, I’m not going to launch a course of my own in 2013. I’m really going to focus on free content and doing affiliate marketing myself. The reason to do it myself is so I can stay current and tell you guys what’s working and what’s not working, give examples, do case studies and that sort of stuff.

I’m hoping to put up 10 to 12 sites in 2013 that are profitable. I would expect those sites to make anywhere from $50 to $1,000 per month, depending on how they go. So that’s a pretty big goal and we’ll see how that goes in 2013.

Forever Affiliate Review (Andrew Hansen)

This Forever Affiliate Review is a work in progress. Your mileage may vary.

So first off, let me say this is a real review — not a review designed to get affiliate clicks. If the review is helpful to you, and you want to buy the course, that is awesome. If you want to buy through my affiliate link, that is even better. But the review is my honest opinion. That’s how I roll. Ask around.

If you have a question about the course before (of after) you buy, leave it in the comments. Andrew is a long-time friend, and I will try to help you get an answer.

What is Forever Affiliate (Review)

Forever Affiliate is the latest affiliate marketing course from Andrew Hansen. It’s so new in fact that I am still working through the course myself. There are over 50 videos I think. I can tell you that I am really amazed at the quality of stuff that I have seen so far. The instruction is clear and I really think it is created in a way that just about anyone (probably even you) can follow it. By the way, if you are looking for a “taste” of what Andrew is delivering, check out this free report that gives the background information about why Andrew is offering this course now. If you like the report, you will like the course.

Forever Affiliate Overview:

As part of this Forever Affiliate Review, I would like to give you an idea what the course is really about. To describe it in a paragraph, I would say that the course teaches how to find high-profit affiliate offers with winnable buyer keywords. Lot’s of emphasis on the right offers and the right keywords. The course then explains how to get traffic for those keywords. Because of the nature of the traffic and the keywords, conversions are high. And because of the offers themselves, sales and commissions are high too. Andrew cites examples of hundreds of dollars a month from just a handful of daily visitors.

What is sort of exciting about the course is that Andrew has several examples of people that have successfully created sites generating hundreds of dollars per month with this “method.” There is nothing really “magic” about Andrew’s approach — it’s just smart.

The Content Of Forever Affiliate:

The Forever Affiliate course is jammed full of helpful videos organized into four major areas as shown in the screen shot below. There areas are Theory, Phase 1 (finding offers and keywords), Phase 2 (building a site and making initial sales) and Phase 3 (growing the site to maximize profits). I’ll describe what the course looks like now (about a 10 days before launch). I don’t expect it to change much in the next several weeks.

Forever Affiliate Theory (3 videos):

The theory section is the shortest section, but maybe the most valuable. In the theory section, Andrew explains why you can still make make with affiliate marketing in 2013, and what will be covered in the Forever Affiliate course. At the time of this writing, the theory section consists of meaty videos about the course and why it’s laid out the way it is. This section basically serves as a roadmap for the course. It’s incredibly motivating to know why you are doing what you are doing, and I consider this section of the course to be just what is needed.

Forever Affiliate Phase 1 (15 videos):

Phase 1 tackles two of the most critical topics in Affiliate Marketing — finding offers and deciding if they are worth going after. The latter topic is what Andrew calls The Analysis Funnel. Basically Andrew reveals his method for determining whether or not a niche is profitable. Of course, the other half of this section is all about how to find offers to put them into the analysis funnel. So in phase 1, you learn how to find offers and decide whether or not you should promote them. Andrew takes you step-by-step through his proven system using examples and video from actual analysis that he does live for the course. It’s pretty cool.

Forever Affiliate Phase 2 (20 videos):

One of the things that I really love about this course is Andrew’s approach to testing offers. The basic idea is that even offers that make it through the analysis funnel might not convert for some reason. The funnel is great, but you never know absolutely for sure that you have a winner until you test it. It’s common sense really, but it’s one of the places a lot of affiliates get really messed up. They spend tons of time, effort, and money, on a site that never makes a sale.

Andrew’s recommendation is to test offers on small mini sites with the minimum amount of promotion to get a sense of whether or not your keywords can be one, and your offers will convert. Offers that pass this hurdle are ready for full buildout of the site to maximize earnings in phase 3. Of course Andrew goes through all of the details needed to register a domain, build a website, get content, etc. It’s all covered in the 20-video Phase 2 series .

Forever Affiliate Phase 3 (10 videos):

Phase 3 is all about promoting the site that you’ve proven is a winner in phase 2. That means that phase 3 is all about promotion and really search engine optimization. Everything that you need to know to promote your site is in this section. And the really cool thing is that all of the information is written for post panda and post penguin search engine optimization.

The Forever Affiliate Offer:

When you check out the Forever Affiliate course. you will be shocked at the low price (seriously — I was stunned). Can’t quote the price here yet as the site is not live. Note that there is an up-sell on the back end for private coaching that is more expensive than the course itself but very attractive if you want to get personal help from Andrew.

The bottom line:

I give this course a strong recommend — and I will be recommending it even more strongly when I finish watching each and every of the 55 videos. So far, they are awesome.

Where In The World Has Mark Been?

Today, I am slamming my fist down on the Go Button.

As I write this on the day after Christmas, I am watching Paul Soares Jr. and his dog Wilson fight a hoard of zombies, giant spiders and skeletons in the twilight forest using only his wits and a sword crafted from diamond. My 6-year-old and I play Minecraft together, and Paul has awesome Minecraft tutorial videos. Believe it or not, the epic battle Paul is waging in Litches castle (Paul is winning) is the biggest motivation for me to keep the promise that I made to myself before Christmas. The promise that I made was that I would rededicate myself to taking Late Night Internet Marketing to the next level.

Of course, all of that requires some explanation, but…

First, let me say thanks to all of you who have sent me tweets, email messages and Facebook posts trying to figure out where I’ve been. Truth is, I kinda lost my MoJo coming into the end of the year. Things were going really great in October. While I had not come close to hitting all of my 2012 goals, I was gaining ground and things were moving in the right direction. I released episode 40 of the podcast from Asia and I got back to Dallas all set to record episode 41. But I was pretty tired from the travel and then some major changes started happening in Day-Job land. And then, nothing.

Day Job Excitement (and excuses)

Most of you know that I have a pretty big job with a large electronics company here in Dallas. I think a lot of you are in a situation similar to mine — a day job that you don’t hate by day, side hustle/hobby/blog/project at night. Out of respect for my employer, I never call them out by name on this blog. I’ve worked there for over 20 years, and really believe they are one of the best companies to work for on the planet. In fact, they constantly rank well in the best companies to work for, best companies for working moms, etc. The company is built on a foundation of corporate ethics and respect for people. It’s a great company with a rich history.

But even a great company has to make adjustments that impact people sometimes, and my day-job company here in Dallas is no exception. The changes were will publicized in the mainstream media, and hundreds of people were impacted.

So, without getting into too many details, let’s just say I still work for the same company, but my job is changed, and I have been totally distracted by all of the chaos surrounding the change. There is a lot more to this part of the story, but I don’t want to violate my own rules about not discussing work on the blog. (I also don’t work on LateNightIM.com while I am at work). I view it like crossing the beams in Ghostbusters.

But here is the thing — distraction is not really the whole story.

The Anatomy Of A Funk

Like I mentioned before, I sort of lost my MoJo. It’s a little hard to admit, and I’ll be talking more about it on episode 41 of the podcast when it is released (tomorrow). I’ve heard long-time marketers like Nicole Dean talk about “getting into a funk” before, but I never really understood what they meant exactly. It turns out that if you briefly lose focus and motivation (for whatever reason), it is very easy to let days, weeks (and in this case a couple of months) go by without working on your side hustle.

It’s one of the reasons for my rule that you should “do something to work on your internet business every day, no matter what.” But I broke my own rule.

For me, it all kinda felt like when the batteries die in a remote control car. It just slows down and stops responding to commands.

I am still not sure exactly what happened, but if this has ever happened to you, then you can let me know your thoughts. It all started with some procrastination and excuses. I kept thinking during the day that I would get to recording that next episode tonight. But then tonight would come, and I would watch TV instead of recording. Or, I would go to bed early. I would literally “promise myself” that I was going to do online stuff at night, but when night came I would decide to “start tomorrow.” I was tired. NCIS LA was on. The Cowboys were playing. What ever.

Once this had gone on for a couple of weeks I started to get frustrated with myself, and that made it even worse for some reason.

Lot’s of excuses for why this happened. I was tired from traveling, there was lots of chaos at work., I had some minor computer trouble, there was the stress of the holidays, etc. The thing is, there are always excuses. The key is figuring out how to power through them.

Getting Out Of A Funk

I am not expert on Funks. So, I am certainly not able to give you good advice for getting out of yours. But I can tell you that my experience is that you need to remember why you are doing what you are doing, celebrate small successes, and draw on the support of people around you.

For me, the key to getting out of my funk was about three things

Support from fans. I got some really nice tweets, Facebook messages, and emails wondering if everything was OK. I loved that. It helped me remember why I am working on LateNightIM in the first place. I didn’t like having to tell people that I was being a slug, and I could not help them if I was not engaging and producing content.
An unexpected conversation with Paul Soares Jr. of MineCraft fame and Pat Flynn. That conversation made my week. More on that on the Podcast. Note also that Paul will be appearing on the podcast in an episode soon. After that conversation with Paul, I was really pumped up (and so was my kid, which was double-neato).
My wife. She’s been encouraging me in a really sweet and helpful way to “get serious” about LateNightIM.com. She is the reason this all got started in the first place, so her encouragement is particularly appropriate.

So, I am back. I have some serious goals for 2013 that I will share in a post next week. Note that the goals include immediately returning to weekly production of the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast. And I plan to track them monthly and report my success right here.

Fun Times In Asia

I’ve having a great time in Asia. I this episode I talk about a great Dim Sum place that I like called Yum Cha in Singapore’s China Town. We had my favorite Dim Sum there called Xiao Long Bao. This dish is a small dumpling with soup inside. The name means Small Dragon or something like that. If you eat it before the soup cools off, you probably will think that you have a dragon in your mouth.

Do I Need An NDA When I Outsource?

If you need legal advice about NDA’s, you should consult a lawyer. I am not a lawyer.

When I was cruising around the forums on Internet Business Mastery Academy site, I noticed (and answered) a question about how to outsource while still protecting your ideas. My answer is a little unconventional, so I decided to mention it in the podcast. Basically, I argue that execution is WAY more valuable than the idea itself, so you don’t need to worry too much about idea theft in most cases. I also offer a couple of things you can do to minimize your risk when outsourcing.

Finally, I talk about Google’s latest “Disavow Links” tool. I conclude that you only need to worry about this if you have been notified that you have “unnatural links” in webmaster tools, and if you are unable to get them taken down. More on this topic next week.

Google’s Exact Match Domain Name Update

I talk all about my thinking about the latest google update impacting Exact Match Domain Names.

Matt Cutts announced a new update on Twitter last week:

Minor weather report: small upcoming Google algo change will reduce low-quality “exact-match” domains in search results.

And then the sky fell. Immediately, a large impact in the influence of exact match domains (EMDs) was detected at SEOMoz.

There has been lots of speculation about all of this. More fun stuff to come.

Micro Site Profits Course

Buzz Marketing And Taking Advantage Of Trending News

This week I feature a great article from my friend Lynn Terry. Plan talks about how you can use Buzz marketing to drive traffic to your site, even if you’re not exactly talking about what’s buzzing in the news at the time. It’s a great proven technique that I’ve used personally on the MasonWorld.com blog in the past.

Josh Spaulding’s New Report

Josh has a great new report called Rapid Niche Profits that he has just released that explains in detail how to build small sites that make small incomes. The great thing about these sites is that they are easy to build, and occasionally the incomes are not small. Josh was going to sell the report for $47, but decided to go ahead and give it away for free. It’s definitely worth the price of opting into Josh’s excellent email list, so head on over and get yourself a copy. It will take you about 45 minutes to read the entire report, and it’s worth every second of your time.

Using Hittail on The Corn Sheller Site

I give a brief update on the corn Sheller site, and I described the new tool that I’m using called HitTail.com. Hit tail is pretty cool. The tool will analyze your incoming search traffic keyword by keyword and identify juicy keywords that you should target in your posts. I try this on the corn Sheller site, but I have to admit that I haven’t done a careful study of the tools of effectiveness. One limitation of the tool is that it can only find keywords that have been used to find your site at least once. Still, I think the tool is really neat, and I am using and paying for it myself, so I thought I would mention it here.

The Snoring Site is a “Failure”?

The snoring site has just simply not worked out the way I wanted it to. This week we show an amazing for visitors. Woo hoo. In this episode, we discuss one possible explanation for why the traffic has been so low.

Listener Question from Jeremy on building backlinks

Finally, we have an excellent question from listener Jerry from Minnesota on the topic of back links. Jeremy wants to know what sort of link building techniques still work today, because he has three niche websites that are underperforming in terms of traffic. I answered Jerry’s question and let them know exactly what I think is working, and what things you should avoid.
