Twelve boats were destroyed Friday in a massive fire at a yacht club in Winthrop. The fire started just after 2:30 a.m. at the Cottage Park Yacht Club on Orlando Avenue near Boston’s Logan International Airport.

Winthrop Fire Department Chief Stephen Calandra said the fire spread from one boat to another from gasoline that was on top of the water.

“Twelve boats were lost — very expensive boats,” Calandra said. “The challenge (was) the amount of hose line we had to get from the street to the furthest point of the marina. A lot of manpower dragging that line out there.”

Two of the boats that were on fire broke free from the marina. “One is still burning on Snake Island. With low tide, we can’t get at it with the fire boats, and the other one broke free and is on Point Shirley, where it ran aground. That’s dangerous too, because it could have floated into another marina,” Calandra said.

The composite decking at the marina also posed a problem, Calandra said. “The whole decking is composite Trex, so when that starts burning, it is not like wood — wood you can put out easy,” Calandra said.

Fire crews from Winthrop and Boston continued to douse the boats with water and foam. “The only way to put that fire out (with) gasoline on top of the water is foam. That is the most effective way,” Calandra said.

“We are heartbroken by the loss, but deeply grateful that no one was injured and that the boats were unoccupied,” Cottage Park Yacht Club Commodore Al Powell said in a statement. “This is a difficult day for our club and for the boating community we are proud to be a part of. Our focus is now on supporting those affected.”

The fire did not impact operations at Logan, officials said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

VIDEO: Numerous fire companies aided in extinguishing a house fire on Elm Street in Franklin on Wednesday.

According to the Franklin Fire Department, crews were dispatched just after 5 p.m. to 35 Elm Street to reports of a house fire.

Once on the scene, crews found the residence emitting heavy flames. Fortunately, all residents of the home evacuated before the first responders’ arrival.

Firefighters began an “aggressive interior attack,” but were quickly forced out of the home due to the fast-spreading fire and rising temperatures due to a propane tank in the back of the home.

As a result of the flames, crews moved to a defensive position and ordered a third alarm, prompting mutual aid from the following companies: Attleboro, Bellingham, Foxboro, Hopkinton, Medfield, Medway, Mendon, Milford, Norfolk, Norwood, Plainville, Walpole, and Wrentham Fire Departments. The Franklin Police, Franklin Water Department, Red Cross, and utility companies assisted on scene.

Eighteen firefighters graduated on Tuesday from the 50-day Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program in Massachusetts.

The ceremony was delayed by one day to allow students and staff to attend the funeral for Boston Firefighter Robert T. Kilduff, Jr., who died in the line of duty on May 23. This marks the completion of an intensive training program at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.

“Massachusetts firefighters commit themselves to protecting their communities and each other from every kind of hazard,” said State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine. “We can never forget the danger that these men and women confront in service to others. We can never lose sight of the risk to their life and safety. And we must always remember those brave souls who make the ultimate sacrifice so that others might live.”

The graduating firefighters represent the eight departments of Bellingham, Chicopee, North Adams, Palmer, Pittsfield, Springfield, Ware, and West Springfield.

Firefighter Angel Reyes of Springfield Fire & Emergency Services received the Richard N. Bangs Outstanding Student Award. This award is presented to one recruit in each graduating Career Recruit Training class and is named for the longtime chair of the Massachusetts Fire Training Council. The award recognizes a recruit’s academic and practical skills, testing, and evaluations during the 10-week program.

VIDEO: Thousands of firefighters and first responders from across the United States and Canada gathered in West Roxbury on Sunday to pay their respects to fallen Boston firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr. during a public wake.

Bagpipes played as firefighters lined the streets outside St. Theresa of Avila Church, creating a solemn tribute to Kilduff, who died while battling a fire in Dorchester last week.

Firefighters traveled from across New England, as well as cities including New York and Chicago, to honor Kilduff’s service and sacrifice.

“It’s not just domestically, it’s international as well,” said Mike Sitar of the Bedford, New Hampshire Fire Department. “You see people from Canada.”

Kilduff served as both a U.S. Marine and a Boston firefighter for 24 years. His death has resonated deeply within the firefighting community and among local residents.

A fire ripped through a building on Route 9 in Brookline, igniting compressed air tanks at a scuba diving shop on the first floor. Brookline Fire says one employee suffered minor burn injuries, and a firefighter got a laceration while attacking the fire.

“We got everybody from the upstairs apartments out quick as well,” said Mike Williams, an employee at East Coast Divers. “We banged on the door and got everybody out from upstairs. There were only two people upstairs as far as I know.”

Brookline Fire Chief John Sullivan says there were five residents who were in town when the fire happened, with another two residents away. All of these people have now been displaced. A relative told WBZ that her sister and her girlfriend were the two who were away, but that her cat was staying inside.

“We did manage to save the cat from the second floor. He wasn’t happy, but we got him back to his owner,” said Chief Sullivan.

The chief went on to say that the fire started in the back area of the shop, but the exact cause is still under investigation. The flames caused the explosion of multiple compressed air cannisters. The air inside is only partly oxygen. Had they been full oxygen tanks the damage could have been worse.

VIDEO: Students at Dighton Middle School got a special lesson outside of the classroom. A major response at Dighton Middle School wasn’t for a crime, but instead to teach students about careers in public safety and law enforcement.

The goal was to showcase the abilities of the Massachusetts State Police and local fire departments, while also serving as a jumpstart for students with an interest in law enforcement.

“It gives us a broad perspective of everything that the police entails, so they get to experience all different varieties of the careers available to them,” said Dighton Middle School Principal Dr. Cheryl Leandro.

While it may seem a bit early for middle school students to think about their future careers, school leaders are already thinking ahead.

Funeral arrangements have been finalized for a fallen Boston firefighter. Thousands from across the country and other countries are expected to attend the services remembering Bobby Kilduff, who died while battling a Dorchester fire this weekend.

Boston firefighters Sam Dillon and Ed Kelly, who also lead the local and international chapters of the firefighters’ union, sat down with NBC10 Boston to talk about their friend — who they say was more than a firefighter.

“He had this persona and this energy that was way bigger than himself,” said Dillon. “He didn’t know how to say ‘no’ when people needed something, and he intuitively knew what needed to be done,” said Kelly.

“In the past three days, I’ve reached for my phone about three times to call Bobby, because whenever this has happened before, Bobby was the guy,” said Dillon.

Kilduff, known by many as BK, fell from the third floor of a burning Dorchester home Saturday night. Investigators are looking into a partial wall collapse as the contributing factor.

A wake is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at St. Theresa of Avila Parish in West Roxbury. Kilduff’s funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End.

Kilduff leaves behind two adult children. “We want to make sure that they feel in their hearts the pain that we all feel, and hopefully that sooths them a bit,” said Kelly.

Firefighters from across the country and parts of Canada are expected to converge on Boston for the sendoff. “Bobby had a very large impact with firefighters on all corners of North America, and it’ll show next Monday,” said Jay Colbert, 3rd District vice president of the International Association of Firefighters.

The Raynham Fire Department was called to a lithium battery manufacturing facility in Raynham Tuesday afternoon following an explosion. It happened at Electrochem Solutions on Paramount Drive around 2:45 p.m.

Raynham Fire Chief Bryan LaCivita said when crews got to the scene, they found smoke coming from the corner of the building, but there was no active fire.

LaCivita said two to three cells exploded, blowing out metal doors to the facility, which he said likely weighs more than 1,000 lbs.

Crews initially looked for a few people believed to be missing when they got to the scene, but everyone was accounted for. No injuries were reported.

A Boston firefighter is being remembered on Memorial Day after his death in the line of duty over the weekend. Robert Kilduff Jr., who served 24 years with the Boston Fire Department, died after falling from the third story of a burning home in Dorchester Saturday night.

Kilduff, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, will be remembered at a wake from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at St. Theresa of Avila Parish in West Roxbury, the International Association of Fire Fighters said. A funeral will be held Monday, June 1, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

Fellow firefighters and community members honored Kilduff on Memorial Day. People stopped by the Rescue 2 firehouse throughout the day on Monday to leave flowers and flags, with many saying prayers for a man who gave his life to save others.

“My brother is on the fire department, my father was on the fire department, my grandfather, my godparents, so this is an honor to be able to come down and pay my respects,” Anne Cullinane said Monday.

Gov. Maura Healey ordered all flags to fly at half staff until Kilduff’s funeral. “He was a real hero, a Marine, a firefighter, a dad. He was really active in supporting his firefighters,” said Healey. “He’ll be deeply, deeply missed.” Those who knew the veteran firefighter echoed that sentiment.

To colleagues and friends, like Lt. Jason Burns of the Fall River Fire Department, Kilduff was known as “BK.” The two met 15 years ago through the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts. “I don’t think you ever truly replace a BK, and I think that’s the same in all of his roles,” Burns said. “BK was just one of those people who had the big personality and the big smile and clearly was somebody that others were communicating with to gain some insight on how to do the job the right way.”

Kilduff was battling the fire on Treadway Road when he fell from the third floor. He was transported to boston Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Rich MacKinnnon, the president of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, says officials will work to determine how Kilduff fell. “There will be a full investigation of what happened, and the union will be involved in that,” said MacKinnon. “Out of different tragedies, we have gotten better training procedures.”

VIDEO: It’s been nearly one year since flames ripped through the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River, killing 10 residents and injuring dozens of others.

Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon emphasized Wednesday afternoon that he never wants anything like it to happen again.

“As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Gabriel House fire, we’ve been looking for meaningful ways to honor the victims and ensure this tragedy doesn’t repeat itself,” Bacon said.

The tragedy shook the city to its core and marked the state’s deadliest fire in more than 40 years.

Investigators believe the fire started in a second-floor room where an oxygen concentrator and smoking materials were found, but they were unable to confirm the exact origin since the resident who lived there passed away.

Gabriel House’s fire suppression system also failed to activate, and it was later discovered that the sprinkler heads were recalled more than 20 years ago.
