Massage Chair Warranties Explained: What Companies Don’t Tell You

Hi, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from Massage Chair Relief, and today I want to talk about massage chair warranties—what they typically cover, what they don’t cover, and what you should know before making a purchase.

Most name-brand massage chairs come with a manufacturer’s warranty, and in most cases that includes in-home service. If something breaks, a technician can come to your home or business to perform the repair. The warranty will also include parts coverage for a specified period of time.

With off-brand chairs sold online, warranty coverage can be much less clear. In fact, I’ve looked at some websites that don’t even publish a complete warranty policy. Before purchasing any massage chair, make sure you understand exactly what warranty protection is included.

At Massage Chair Relief, we offer a lifetime labor warranty on all of our chairs. Some customers choose to rely solely on the factory warranty, whether it’s one year, three years, or five years. That’s certainly their choice. However, as a chair ages, the likelihood of needing service naturally increases.

Today, I’d like to discuss both the length of typical warranties and the limitations commonly found in factory warranty agreements.

Typical Warranty Coverage

Most major massage chair brands offer:

1 year of in-home labor
3 years of parts coverage

The labor warranty covers technician visits to your home, while the parts warranty covers replacement components.

Many manufacturers also offer extended warranty options, though they can be expensive.

Some examples include:

Infinity, Human Touch, and Daiwa typically offer 1 year labor and 3 years parts.
Fujiiryoki and D.Core often provide 5 years labor and 5 years parts coverage.
Luraco offers 3 years labor and 5 years parts coverage.
Osaki frequently includes an additional 2-year extended warranty on select premium models, bringing coverage to 3 years labor and 5 years parts.
Kyota generally offers 1 year labor and 2 years parts coverage.

Five years is typically the longest manufacturer warranty available in the massage chair industry.

Pre-Owned and Used Chairs

Warranty coverage can vary significantly for used chairs.

Some manufacturers provide full warranty coverage on certified pre-owned or trade-show models. Others offer only limited coverage, such as 60 or 90 days.

If you purchase a chair privately through sources like Facebook Marketplace or from an individual seller, the warranty usually does not transfer to the new owner. In many cases, you may also have difficulty obtaining replacement parts in the future.

How Warranty Service Usually Works

If something goes wrong with your chair, you should contact the retailer first. Some retailers will assist throughout the process, while others simply direct you to the manufacturer.

Typically, the process involves:

Diagnosing the problem.
Ordering replacement parts.
Shipping those parts to your home.
Scheduling a technician to perform the repair.

It’s important to stay involved throughout the process, as communication breakdowns can occasionally occur.

What Most Factory Warranties Do Not Cover

Although every company has different terms and conditions, most warranties exclude damage resulting from:

Improper installation
Unauthorized repairs or modifications
Commercial or high-use business environments
Electrical surges or improper power supply
Accidental damage or dropped components
Misuse or abuse
Exceeding weight limits
Damage caused by pets, insects, mice, or rodents
Failure to follow operating instructions
Transportation damage after delivery
Theft, vandalism, fire, flooding, earthquakes, or other natural disasters
Outdoor exposure and environmental damage
Unauthorized replacement parts
Private-party ownership transfers

For example, we once encountered a chair that repeatedly malfunctioned because mice had built a nest underneath it and chewed through the wiring. Another chair located on a beachfront patio experienced severe corrosion from salt air exposure.

Neither situation would typically be covered under a factory warranty.

Upholstery and Cosmetic Wear

One area that surprises many consumers is upholstery coverage.

Most warranties do not cover:

Normal wear and tear
Fading
Peeling or cracking upholstery
Foam softening or compression
Fabric pilling
Zipper or Velcro failures

Over time, exposure to sweat, lotions, oils, perfumes, colognes, and other chemicals can accelerate wear on upholstery materials. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help extend the life of your chair.

After the Warranty Expires

Once the factory warranty expires, you are generally responsible for:

Replacement parts
Technician labor
Travel charges for service calls

Most quality massage chairs should last well beyond their warranty period—often 10 to 15 years or more—but repairs become your responsibility after coverage ends.

That’s one reason we believe our lifetime labor warranty provides significant value. As long as you own the chair, we continue to cover the technician labor costs associated with repairs. In remote areas, there may still be travel surcharges, but we help offset those costs as well.

Final Thoughts

Before purchasing a massage chair, make sure you understand:

The length of the warranty
What parts and labor are covered
Whether in-home service is included
Whether the warranty transfers to future owners
How customer support is handled after the sale

A warranty exists to protect you against manufacturing defects and unexpected breakdowns—not misuse, neglect, or environmental damage.

The better informed you are before purchasing, the fewer surprises you’ll encounter later.

Once in a while, your massage chair may become a little glitchy. It might shut down in the middle of a program, fail to power on when you’re ready to use it, or simply behave in an unusual way.

Before contacting the warranty department or scheduling a service technician, there’s a simple troubleshooting step you should try first: perform a reset.

To reset your chair:

Turn the chair off completely.
Use the main power switch located on the back of the chair—not just the power button on the remote.
Unplug the chair from the wall outlet.
Wait several seconds to allow the system to fully reset.
Plug the chair back in.
Turn the main power switch back on.
Power up the chair and test it again.

In many cases, this simple reset will resolve temporary software or communication issues and restore normal operation.

This isn’t unique to any particular brand or model. Most massage chairs contain electronic components and computer systems that can occasionally benefit from a reset, just like a computer or smartphone.

Trying this quick fix first may save you the time and inconvenience of waiting for a service appointment when the issue can be resolved in just a few minutes.

Cheap massage chairs explained. Why low price can mean low quality.

I’ve talked before about inexpensive massage chairs versus premium models, and today I want to explain why cheaper massage chairs often come with significant trade-offs.

In many cases, lower-cost chairs are manufactured in smaller factories using less expensive components and lower-quality materials. Quality control and testing standards may also be less rigorous before the chairs are exported to the United States and other international markets.

Another major issue is warranty coverage. Because the profit margins on these cheaper chairs are often very small, many companies cannot afford to provide in-home repair service. If something breaks, you may be required to ship the chair back for repairs, which can be extremely inconvenient and expensive.

We also hear frequent complaints about weak customer support. Many smaller companies selling these chairs online don’t stay in business very long, and after-sales service can be difficult—or impossible—to access once you’ve made your purchase.

We regularly receive calls from people who bought inexpensive massage chairs online without trying them first or fully understanding the warranty, return policy, or repair process. Unfortunately, many of those customers end up stuck with a chair that no longer works and can’t easily be repaired.

In some cases, the chairs are inexpensive enough that people simply throw them away and buy another one instead of repairing them. That’s one reason these products are sometimes referred to as “disposable chairs.”

Now, not every affordable massage chair is bad, but lower pricing often comes with compromises in durability, customer support, repair options, and long-term reliability.

Massage Chairs Proven by Science? Here’s What Studies Found

Hi, I’m Dr. Alan Weidner from Massage Chair Relief, and today we’re going to talk about massage chair research studies.

Back in 2016, as I mentioned in various blog posts and industry updates, Dr. Michael Olpin at Weber State University conducted one of the first major studies involving massage chairs at the university’s stress center. He measured blood pressure, pulse, stress, and pain indicators in thousands of participants, primarily students and employees.

At the time, very few massage chair studies existed. But in recent years, we’ve started to see more research emerge. Today, I’m going to review four studies that examine different aspects of massage chair benefits. Hopefully, this information will help confirm what many of us have observed for years: massage chairs can positively impact stress, pain, recovery, and overall well-being.

For years, people in the industry have said massage chairs can help reduce pain, lower stress, improve relaxation, and even support healthier blood pressure levels. But anecdotal experiences and customer testimonials can only go so far. Scientific studies are important because they objectively measure results rather than relying solely on opinions or personal experiences.

Researchers don’t simply ask, “Do you feel better?” They measure specific physiological and psychological changes. Some of these studies tracked cortisol levels, DHEA-S levels, pain scales, muscle stiffness, and recovery markers to determine measurable effects.

I excluded several studies from this discussion because some were repetitive, while others focused on a specific massage chair brand or model. For example, there was a study involving a Bodyfriend chair, but I chose not to include it because I don’t want people to think the benefits only apply to one brand.

In reality, the benefits appear to be fairly consistent across most modern massage chairs, whether they are made by Osaki, Infinity, Daiwa, Luraco, or other manufacturers. If a chair includes features such as back rollers, airbags, calf massage, and foot rollers, the therapeutic effects are likely very similar.

Interestingly, three of the four studies came out of South Korea, which makes sense considering how popular massage chairs are there. Bodyfriend is one of the world’s largest massage chair retailers, especially internationally. Massage chair usage is deeply integrated into Korean and Asian culture, so it’s natural to see more research coming from that region.

The first study we’ll discuss was titled Clinical Effects of Using a Massage Chair on Stress Measures. It was a randomized controlled pilot study from South Korea, which is considered one of the strongest types of research designs.

The purpose of the study was to assess the long-term effects of massage chair use on stress levels in adults aged 50 to 75. Researchers divided participants into intervention and control groups. Some participants used massage chairs, while others did not.

The results showed that massage chair use was associated with reductions in serum cortisol and DHEA-S levels, both of which are related to stress and adrenal function. Participants also reported improvements in depression scores and overall health perception.

The conclusion was that chronic stress in adults could be effectively managed through massage chair therapy.

That finding aligns with what we’ve seen for years in showrooms and chiropractic clinics: massage chairs often help reduce stress, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and create a general sense of well-being.

The second study was a literature review examining the overall health benefits of massage chairs. Researchers reviewed 59 published articles and selected 18 for detailed analysis.

The review concluded that massage chairs may positively affect both physical and mental health. Benefits included stress reduction, improved cognitive function, reduced mental fatigue, decreased muscle stiffness, pain reduction, and improved quality of life.

Again, researchers noted reductions in cortisol and DHEA-S levels, reinforcing findings from previous studies.

The third study compared massage chair therapy to standard physiotherapy for lower back pain patients. Researchers evaluated pain levels over a three-week period using both visual pain scales and the McGill Pain Questionnaire.

Both massage chairs and physiotherapy reduced pain, but massage chair therapy showed particularly strong improvements in pain scores and quality of life. The study concluded that massage chairs are a promising and cost-effective option for pain management, although physiotherapy still produced better short-term functional outcomes.

In other words, massage chairs are not a replacement for physical therapy, but they can be an effective complementary tool, especially for long-term pain management.

The final study focused on exercise recovery and compared three recovery methods: manual massage, massage chair therapy, and simply resting.

Researchers measured muscle tension, elasticity, pain thresholds, and recovery time in female participants after physical exertion.

All three methods helped recovery, but manual massage performed the best, followed closely by massage chair therapy. Passive rest alone was the least effective.

One interesting finding involved the rectus femoris muscle, part of the quadriceps. Even though massage chairs do not directly massage the front of the thighs, participants still experienced improvements in those muscles. My interpretation is that massage to the pelvis, hips, and surrounding structures may create a chain reaction that positively affects connected muscle groups.

Overall, these studies—published between 2020 and 2024—continue to validate what many of us in the industry have observed for years: massage chairs can play a meaningful role in stress reduction, pain management, recovery, and overall wellness.

And I believe we’re going to see even more research in the years ahead as massage chair therapy becomes more common worldwide.

2D vs 3D vs 4D vs 5D massage chairs explained. Find out which one fits you best

If you’re familiar with massage chairs, then you’ve probably heard the terms 2D, 3D, and 4D. These terms refer to the movement and functionality of the massage rollers.

A 2D massage chair has rollers that move up and down and side to side. That’s the basic level of movement.

A 3D massage chair adds another dimension: the rollers can also move forward and backward, allowing the massage intensity to extend deeper into your muscles.

A 4D massage chair includes all the movements of a 3D chair, but it also allows you to adjust the speed and rhythm of the rollers. This creates a more realistic, human-like massage experience because the rollers can speed up and slow down during the massage.

Now, manufacturers have started introducing 5D massage chairs. There doesn’t seem to be a universal definition yet, but most companies use the term to describe advanced sensor technology within the chair.

These sensors can detect the tightness of your muscles and spine as the rollers move along your back. The chair then uses that feedback to automatically adjust the pressure and intensity in specific areas. In other words, the chair adapts in real time based on how tense or relaxed your muscles are during the massage.

Can massage chairs be stylish and powerful? Here’s the truth

“Massage chairs are ugly.” We’ve heard that comment for years. They’re not always the most attractive pieces of furniture, and many people wonder if they can get a massage chair that looks like a regular chair while still offering all the features of a full-body massage chair.

The truth is, that’s difficult to achieve. The only chairs that truly resemble traditional furniture are models like the Human Touch 7.1 or Human Touch 8.0. These chairs look more like office chairs, with standard armrests and a calf massager that rotates underneath the seat so it can be hidden when not in use.

However, those chairs provide a more limited massage experience. Typically, you only get rollers moving up and down your back along with paddles or airbags massaging your calves.

If you want a full-feature massage chair, most of them still look like massage chairs. For example, the Decor 2 has beautiful styling, elegant lines, oak wood accents, and refined side panels. It’s a very attractive chair, but it still clearly looks like a massage chair.

At the end of the day, there’s always a trade-off between aesthetics and functionality. If you want the full therapeutic benefits of a high-end massage chair, you may have to sacrifice a little style for performance.

Not all reviews are real. Learn how to spot genuine ones before buying a massage chair.

Reviews are an important part of many people’s shopping experience and buying process. Over time, consumers have come to trust reviews to help determine whether a company is reputable and whether a product is worth purchasing.

Unfortunately, not all reviews are genuine.

Some reviews can be manipulated. Others may be paid for, or even written by manufacturers or retailers themselves. In some cases, reviews are submitted by people who were never actual customers or buyers of the product. This is something we have seen in the massage chair industry as well.

There used to be an app called FakeSpot that helped analyze reviews on various websites and determine whether they appeared authentic. It graded reviews on a scale from A to F, much like a school grading system. However, that app is no longer available, as it was discontinued in July.

That said, there are still other tools and software programs available. If you search online for terms like “review checker” or “review authenticity,” you can find alternative services that help identify whether reviews appear genuine and trustworthy or whether they may be manipulated, paid, or fabricated.

The key takeaway is to be cautious. There are many reviews online, but not all of them are legitimate. It can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between authentic and misleading reviews.

There are also helpful tips available online. If you do a little research on Google or Reddit, you can find recommendations on how to spot suspicious reviews and avoid being misled.
