If you’ve noticed on facebook a recent petition has been circulating for Mattel to create a Barbie doll to represent cancer patients. Started by two women who have been touched by cancer they are encouraging the toy company to produce a bald Barbie, not only as a totem for those who know someone affected by cancer, but also as a heroine for little girls who suffer from the effects of chemotherapy and cancer themselves.

“As modern toy makers have tried to stay up-to-date with current trends, a cancer warrior Barbie would certainly make sense. In reality, a bald Barbie wouldn’t have to be limited to those fighting cancer. There are other conditions that cause hair loss and just as any little girl wants a Barbie that looks like her, a bald little girl deserves the same so she too can be reminded that she is beautiful just as she is — hair or no hair.”

It’s not really a secret that sometimes people get bored at work, when that occurs, not only do workers loose concentration, but this causes an increase in mistakes and a lack of productivity. One of the goals of HR departments and managment should be ways to keep the workplace active and reduce boredom. Healthy snacks and drinks are one of the ways this boredom may be avoided, as well as encouraging your employees to be healthy.

“My analysis of the results suggests that the most significant cause of office boredom is an undemanding workload. So managers should look at ways of reducing sources of workplace boredom and at encouraging healthier ways of coping,” said Dr. Sandi Mann, from the University of Central Lancashire in a news release. “We also found that some people are far more prone to boredom than others. Managers might consider using boredom-proneness as a tool when they are selecting staff or making decisions about staff development.”

Since the 1970′s, the percentage of overweight children and teens has tripled in the U.S. One of the popular theories behind this weight gain is the availability of junk foods in schools from vending machines. High sugar sodas, high fat chips and candy are readily available, simply pop in a few quarters and get yourself a quick snack. But, before you place all your blame on the school you need to factor in part of the equasion: where are your children and teens getting the money necessary to buy these items? Are you enabling their access to high calorie snacks?

“There has been a great deal of focus in the media on how schools make a lot of money from the sale of junk food to students, and on how schools have the ability to help reduce childhood obesity,” Van Hook said. “In that light, we expected to find a definitive connection between the sale of junk food in middle schools and weight gain among children between fifth and eighth grades. But, our study suggests that – when it comes to weight issues – we need to be looking far beyond schools and, more specifically, junk food sales in schools, to make a difference.”

Anyone who struggles with weight loss can’t help but fall into the occasional fantasy of taking a pill and magically the pounds fall off. While this fantasy will likely never become reality, choosing your food carefully can in fact help with your weight loss. For instance, eating oatmeal and other whole grain fibers can help because you body will require twice as many calories to breakdown the nutrients from those fibers than you will recover from their ingestion.

“It’s true: Certain foods have a very high thermogenic effect, so you literally scorch calories as you chew. Other eats contain nutrients and compounds that stoke your metabolic fire. Feed your metabolism with these. Your body burns twice as many calories breaking down whole foods (especially those rich in fiber such as oatmeal and brown rice) than processed foods. Protein has a high thermogenic effect: You burn about 30% of the calories the food contains during digestion (so a 300-calorie chicken breast requires about 90 calories to break it down).”

After a month of hopefully making positive changes to your life with regards to your diet and excercising, it may be time to tackle that next hurdle in calming your life: stress. While removing stressful situations from your life may be the ideal, it isn’t very practical. So the next best thing is finding ways to manage your stress without causing your blood pressure to go through the roof.

“Learning how to control stress can help you feel better and improve your health. The Cleveland Clinic suggests ways to help manage stress: Become aware of the earliest signs of stress and how you respond. Learn and practice a relaxation technique that becomes “your” way of “de-stressing.” Practice the technique as soon as you feel stress. Imagine yourself in a stressful situation so you can practice dealing with stress. Apply your stress management techniques to real-life situations.”

One of the newest diet trends to hit the nation is the CarbLover’s diet. A total reversal from the trend from the last few years in which dieters have avoided foods containing carbs. The theory behind this diet trend is that certain carbs can help to curb your cravings while stimulating your metabolism. Some of the carbs they encourage are those found in whole grains, as well as fruits and vegetables. Research it more to see if this is the diet for you.

“Scientists at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center for Human Nutrition, in Denver, along with a team of international researchers uncovered new evidence that revealed that eating the right carbs is the best way to get and stay slim. Other exciting new studies showed that certain carb-rich foods: Shrink fat cells, especially in your belly. Boost fat burning. Increase muscle mass. Curb cravings. Keep you feeling full longer than other foods. Control blood sugar. Lower cholesterol and triglycerides.”

If you suffer from chronic back pain, you may be searching all over for some form of pain remedy to help you with your pain. But have you considered using a back brace? While these are most definitely during times of straining activities, or even during long stretchs of sitting at your desk. However, don’t use one all the time without consulting a doctor. Prolonged use can weaken the back muscles, thus enhancing the back pain you experience.

“If you have chronic low back pain, it may help to wear a brace for short periods or during back-straining activities. The back brace can help support your back. But prolonged use may weaken your back muscles. The best back brace may actually be your own muscles. Ask your doctor about strengthening and stability exercises.”

Many people have gotten e-mail chains warning you about using deoderant because it can cause breast cancer. While certain beauty and hygeine products do contain paraben, a preservative that has been found in breast cancer cells, there is no proof that personal care products cause breast cancer. Rather than change your entire beauty regime, simply avoid products that don’t contain active ingredients that affect hormones.

“It has to do with certain underarm products that contain preservatives called parabens. These chemicals can act like the hormone estrogen in the body. Estrogen is known to fuel certain breast cancers. Many breast cancers develop in the part of the breast closest to the armpit, where antiperspirants and other underarm products are used. So where are all the parabens coming from? Parabens such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isopropylparaben, and isobutylparaben are also found in makeup, moisturizers, and hair care and shaving products.”

In elementary school you are introduced to your five senses, in high school you get a little bit more in depth about the breakdown of how these senses work, and if you desire, in college you can learn even more. However, despite how much we know, there is even more that we still don’t know. For instance, how do you determine what exactly you are touching without seeing it?

“You can deflect a single hair on your arm and feel it, but how can you tell the difference between a raindrop, a light breeze or a poke of a stick? Touch is not yes or no; it’s very rich, and now we’re starting to understand how all those inputs are processed. In order to determine how all the input from each hair is gathered and transmitted to the brain the team used a different staining method which allowed them to dye the other end of the cell, in the spinal cord.”

Almost everyone is looking for ways to help reduce their likelihood of getting diabetes, one of the simplest and most effective ways is to increase your fiber intake. Not only will this help to keep your digestive system regular, but it also helps to make you feel more full, absorbs excess water in your system and can help limit your sugars. Look for ways to naturally increase the fiber in your diet.

“Fiber is probably best known for its ability to help with constipation. But fiber also can lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease. How can you get more fiber? Choose cereals with ‘bran’ or ‘fiber’ in the name. Switch to whole-grain breads and pastas. Use brown rice, barley and bulgur instead of plain white rice. And mix chopped frozen broccoli into prepared spaghetti sauce. Just remember: Drink plenty of water since fiber works best when it absorbs water.”
