Lauren Muser Cates is an educator and massage therapist based in the Washington, DC area. She is a graduate of the Potomac Massage Training Institute and Metta Institute’s End of Life Care Practitioner Program. Lauren is currently serving as the president of the Society for Oncology Massage and is co-founder of Healwell, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve quality of life for people living with acute, chronic and terminal illness through hands-on integrative therapies, education and research.

She offers a variety of oncology massage and end of life CE courses as well as a 9-day hospital-based training course at her home hospital in Arlington, VA. Lauren’s passion is preparing massage therapists with the skills and information they need to work safely while also working from a place of true service and heart. She is working to ensure that
greater integration and acceptance of massage therapy in the larger medical field does not result in a sterilization of the therapeutic relationship and a loss of the intangibles of good listening, practitioner presence and good old fashioned love. She believes that all massage therapists should have at least basic training in oncology massage and that awareness around end of life issues has been integral in her own growth and path.

She is a licensed massage therapist in Washington, DC, certified in Virginia, a credentialed member of the medical staff at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA and an 8-year hospice volunteer.

Barrett Dorko is a 1973 graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in Physical Therapy. He began his career with a deep fascination for instinctive motion and the way it might be used to treat neurologic conditions such as stroke and cerebral palsy.

Turning his attention to orthopedic problems, primarily spinal pain, he became adept at manipulative technique and taught workshops across the United States while working at a specialty clinic in Atlanta. Returning to Ohio in 1979, Barrett conducted a solo practice focusing on spinal pain while continuing to teach and beginning his career as a writer for several publications. His method of management began to reflect his initial interest in inherent movement, this time for painful problems. Simple Contact, a method of manual and verbal communication, was developed during this period.

Leaving private practice in 2007, Mr. Dorko now works in skilled nursing facilities near his home while occasionally traveling to teach. He writes daily, principally for SomaSimple.com.

Chris Balsley MA, LPC, PCC has maintained a thriving and diverse professional coaching, presenting and somatic counseling practice for almost thirty years. Chris’s clients include leaders at all levels in organizations, from high-level government and military officials to executives in Fortune 500 companies. He has presented in the United States, Asia, Mexico and Europe and he has been interview on television and radio shows. Chris’s present focus is on inspiring leaders to become the most effective leaders they can become, especially in the face of workplace stress, daily adversity and overwhelm. He is a veteran of the U.S. Military (Hon. Discharge 1983) and has taught psychology, counseling skill and somatics at the University and College level since 2001.

Chris studied directly with the Tension Release Exercise (TRE) founder David Berceli Ph.D for three years during which they trained over 6,000 high performance individuals in these revolutionary exercises. Since the beginning of 2012 Chris has personally guided over 300 Singaporean, Indonesian and Malaysians through the TRE process.

S. G. “Out of everything I’m doing to help my body heal, I’ve found that TREs all by themselves are 75% of the success I’m experiencing… The training you provided me is not only less expensive (especially compared to the surgeries and medical co-pays I was paying), it is lifelong, applicable to my career success, bettering my parenting, and helping me be a better spouse.”
