Massage therapy classes also provide would-be massage therapists with a great reason to look a little further into the possibility of a career in massage therapy and other related health care roles.

Many people suffer from high blood pressure, headaches, nausea, and a number of other symptoms that stress is dominating their lives. Massage therapy classes can teach people how to get rid of the physical stress we hold in our muscles that causes these types of body malfunctions. For those who think that making people feel better and making them healthier is the perfect job, massage therapy classes might also show them if this is the right kind of profession to pursue.

There is very strong evidence that massage therapy alleviates pain and diminishes physical stresses on the body that can cascade into the numerous systematic stress responses, a few of which are mentioned above. There are thousands of unknown body reactions that result from pain and stress in the muscles. Massage therapists use human touch and learned skills to help individuals to not only feel healthier, but actually be healthier too.

To become a massage therapist in most states, a person must attend an accredited massage therapy school or go through a program offered by a technical or vocational college. While massage therapy school is far less expensive (and time consuming) than many other types of professional education programs, there is still the cost of tuition, books, and supplies to consider.

To make sure this is the right career choice; free massage therapy classes are the ideal way to test the waters. Pay attention to the instructor and ask him or her questions about the profession and their experience in massage therapy school.

In a press release, the massage therapy school announced that it credits the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s report that the massage therapy industry is expected to continue to gain momentum for years to come, as well as income potential for licensed massage therapists and Washington, DC’s general popularity.

The National Massage Therapy Institute, the owner of the school, released information that its massage therapy school in Falls Church, Virginia is receiving more interest and enrollments than they have seen until recently. This is a growing trend nationally, but the areas surrounding this particular school are fertile soil for aspiring massage therapists who want to maximize their income potential.

Massage therapy schools help students learn about the advanced techniques in massage therapy and many extend their programs over a period of two-years. The massage therapy school in Virginia makes it possible to complete the massage therapy program in a year or less for full time students, further expediting the process of earning income in the area.

The massage therapy school, like many others, also creates strategic relationships in the area, allowing students the benefit of employment consideration by one of the school’s many partners in the massage therapy industry from Baltimore to Washington, DC.

Income potential is greater in this area than other regions of the country, according to some industry experts. While the Bureau of Labor and Statistics claims the median income for a licensed massage therapist who has completed school to be roughly $45,000 per year, therapists in Washington, DC and Baltimore areas earn $6,000 or more above that median average.

NMTI’s massage therapy school has locations throughout the region and offers a 900 hour course program for general massage therapists, with other schools available in the area for specialist’s training.

The AMTA found that there are more consumers turning to massage who believe it to be an essential part of their personal health and wellbeing than ever before; most of who turn to massage for pain management and to treat medical illnesses.

The studies concluded that more people area receptive to the idea (and fact, arguably) that massage therapy is a really effective method of managing a number of ailments. The upswing in confidence by American consumers is good news for massage therapy businesses and schools, alike. For schools, this latest news is very encouraging because it can mean greater enrollments and responsibility in shaping the future of the massage therapy industry.

For massage therapy businesses, it spells new clients and more repeat business – the basis for a thriving massage therapy clinic. Nearly half of businesses surveyed said that they saw an increase in business last year.

Part of consumer confidence increases could be linked to state regulations and local ordinances requiring more people to complete a specified number of hours at an accredited massage therapist school before being allowed to test for certification.

Massage therapist schools were found to be a part of the regulations and standards put forth by total 43 states in country, though some include voluntary certification provisions. Further, the AMTA found that there are at least 350 accredited massage therapist schools in the United States and almost 100,000 national certified massage therapists.

Massage therapy schools prepare students to pass the final certification exam and fulfill regulatory requirements for taking the test, while putting students in contact with potential employers in their communities.

As young couples become more and more attentive to their own health, they tend to pay more attention to the health of their partner; not to mention that some might find massage classes downright romantic.

Couples celebrating the special day with massage classes learn the basics of effleurage, a massage technique that is mostly superficial and relaxing. Deep tissue massage and specialty massage classes are also available to those who have no interest in commercially providing massage therapists and some health experts say that any massage is beneficial.

Couple massage classes cost around $100 for the couple, depending on where the classes are held and who is instructing the class. For two or more hours, couples can learn relaxing techniques for giving their partner a full body massage. The human touch is quite healing on the mind and spirit; even when no physical benefit is achieved. Effleurage techniques taught in most massage therapy classes help to improve circulation, stimulate lymph glands, reduce stress, and lower blood pressure.

A special topic covered in many of these classes is how to receive a massage; a skill that might seem natural to some people. However, knowing how to relax and breath during a massage is a very important part of the therapy; an aspect that is usually guided by a professional massage therapist at high-end massage spas.

Massage classes are the ideal gift for anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, and any occasion in which a couple might want to learn the intimacy of relaxing massage. But it’s not just for couples, massage classes are available to teach individuals how to care for ailing seniors, loved ones with serious diseases, or those who want to help someone with migraine and headache management.

The massage therapy students at Florida State College at Jacksonville are preparing to provide massages to veterans tomorrow during the event.

Other departments at the school are helping, as well, and the veterans will receive an entire day of Valentine’s pampering from various service industry students during their visit with the wounded warriors. The veterans will get haircuts courtesy of the school’s cosmetology students, a great meal thanks to the school’s culinary arts students, and dental care from the dental program students.

Veterans must be 100% disabled in order to qualify for full dental benefits from the VA services, so the special dental care portion of the day will assist the veterans with services they may not otherwise qualify for under normal circumstances. The massage therapy students will provide chair massages to the eighteen participating veterans during the event.

Chair massage techniques are a standard part of the training curriculum at massage therapy schools and many schools provide outside services to help learn about real-world scenarios. After completing massage therapy training, many therapists enter the industry as independent practitioners. Chair massages are often one of the best ways for a new massage therapist to make money after graduation because they allow the therapist to offer services to clients who cannot make it to a spa or massage therapy clinic for services.

Many corporate wellness programs contract massage therapists to perform chair massages during the work day for office workers. Some therapists solicit new clients this way as well, because it can be a lucrative endeavor since the “office” is held by the client and not the therapist. Corporate wellness programs and health facility massage techniques are among the skills one can learn at massage therapy school to help create business right after graduation.

Massage therapy school doesn’t really end at graduation for those who are serious about their career; continued education is a “must” for staying at the top of the field.

Best Massage, a Chicago based equipment and service provider, recently announced its partnership with a continuing education provider to help its customers stay on top of their professional education. The Center for Massage Therapy Continuing Education Program will offer Best Massage customers up to 7 board approved continuing education courses. Massage therapy school and continuing education requirements vary by state, but the courses offered here are compliant with the National Certification board for Therapeutic Massage and Body Work.

Continuing education is an important aspect of a massage therapy career and is usually a state requirement for seeking to renew one’s massage therapy license. Continued massage therapy schooling throughout the career of a massage therapist is also critical to the success of their business. Massage techniques change almost every year and as new discoveries are made by medical researchers about how our bodies work, massage therapy techniques must change to accommodate the new information.

At the end of the day, massage therapy school is a basis for a lifelong education process. Just like any other health related field, massage therapy is an evolving and dynamic industry. Diseases and musculoskeletal conditions are sometimes best treated with massage therapy and learning as much as possible about them is an integral part of being relevant to clients.

Perhaps Amona Buechler, the owner of Best Massage, said it best in the release (available at SBWire) when she said, “Building on what we already know as well as learning something completely new makes us better massage therapists both in practice and in business.”

Massage therapy schools teach their students the most important and valuable lessons they can with the understanding that some things cannot be learned in a classroom.

One thing that can (and should) be taught at massage therapy school however, is that each student needs to focus on protecting their biggest asset: their own body.

In massage therapy schools around the world, plenty of students tire of being reprimanded by their instructors because of poor posture and body control issues. However, this could be one of the most important things one can learn because without a good back and dexterous control of the hands a massage therapist we cannot be. It is important to prevent injury on the job so this is a core component of good massage therapy school programs.

There are programs available to teachers at massage therapy schools who wish to learn the latest and greatest in injury prevention and protection. As with all things health related, new discoveries and methods are published each year and it is important for schools to stay on top of the newest information and industry trends. Not doing so could put the massage therapy school at a disadvantage in this highly competitive injury.

Students should ask their prospective massage therapy schools about injury prevention and protection training and inquire into whether or not faculty members are up to date on the latest information. Some organizations estimate that more than 75% of professional massage therapists report injuries received during the course of their work.

Proper body handling, posture, and technique can prevent most injuries in the profession, so students should verify that the massage therapy school is ready to teach techniques that are approved and work. Massage therapy schools that employ a certified injury prevention instructor are always preferred.

Students looking for help paying for massage therapy school still have time to apply for a spa-related scholarship fund.

The Mary Tabacchi Scholarship is worth $2,500 from the International Spa Association for students who want to work in a spa.

To qualify for the scholarship, massage therapy and spa-related students must be in an undergraduate school and have completed at least one year at college. They must also have an interest in spa management and a 2.75 GPA.

The International Spa Association is a professional organization that is focused on bettering their industry through assisting students of massage therapy and other related industries including physicians, nutritionalists, and wellness professionals. The scholarship is available from the ISPA Foundation to a student of any related discipline as long as they have demonstrated an intention to go into management.

Successful massage therapy schools and students interested in managing a spa will be well-prepared to meet the growing need of the health industry, which has proven to tap into many other industries in recent years. Facilities are renovating everything from their physical buildings to their treatment and prevention programs. Virtually all industries stand to gain from the changes in the health field.

The scholarship was created to honor one of the first spa-specific teachers in the industry, Mary Tabacchi. One lucky student will be notified of their scholarship award in May and will also be treated to airfare and paid accommodation to an International Spa Association conference.

The last ISPA conference focused on quality education and one of the topics to help kick-off the conference was instruction in how massage therapy clinics can help spas gain access to medical clients. As part of the spa agenda, massage therapy is a unique way in which spas can become involved in this aspect of the health and wellness industries. Massage therapy schools have also focused on an ever-growing health industry in recent years.

A January report from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Body Work proves not all massage therapy schools are equal.

Several massage therapy schools were suspended or had their national certification abilities revoked due to a variety of infractions against their policies.

Relative to the number of massage therapy schools in the nation, the Certification Board’s list of 26 schools represents a very small percentage of the nation’s massage therapy institutes. However, this information provides a few good questions for a prospective massage therapy school if you plan to enroll any time soon. This is especially true if you are in California, where 19 of the schools are located.

Three of the massage therapy schools were temporarily suspended and two were permanently revoked. The rest had their certification board abilities revoked for various reasons, many of which cannot be cured. Some of the cited reasons for revoking a massage therapy school’s access to national board licensing prompt some legitimate questions to ask before paying money for a higher education in massage therapy.

The list found massage therapy schools that were issuing fake certificates and diplomas, actual hours of teaching before providing a degree or diploma, and some graduates that were connected with “erotic massage” institutions. The massage therapy schools were largely cited with infractions relating to the degrees and certificate requirements they avoided when awarding degrees to students as well as connection to massage techniques that are not allowed in massage therapy school curriculum.

Fraudulent transcript records, unauthorized degree awards, illicit content and course work, inappropriate record keeping practices can cause the certification board to suspect that a massage therapy school may be acting outside of the regulatory agencies’ rules. After finding instances of possible fraud, the board often requests information from the school about its practices and performs and audit.

Now, industry experts are expecting the education system to keep adding massage therapy school programs for many years to come.

This is largely due to the fact that massage therapy schools are receiving a good portion of the nation’s dejected professionals, a trend that’s proving that sometimes being a 2nd choice isn’t so bad. A recent report from the American Massage Therapy Association indicates that this is a growing trend; one that industry experts think will continue through the recession.

The AMTA found that people who complete massage therapy school are majorly in their early forties and members of professional organizations. Even as a second choice, massage therapy schools can bring in upwards of $60.00 an hour for these ex-industry professionals too and they only work about 15 hours a week on actually providing massages. This lends to the idea that adults exiting the work force are more concerned with spending time on things they enjoy.

Losing a job after years in the profession feels much like a “break up” to most people. It seems to make them focus on the things that they find the most important in life. We have witness this trend in other industries, too, as people opt for low paying careers that are highly rewarding emotionally.

The AMTA discovered another statistic proving this theory that these types of massage therapy school graduates are setting out to make their own way in the world, independent of corporate constraints. They suspect that most of them will be sole practitioners that rely on repeat business. The desire to control their own future, coupled with professional backgrounds that are customer-centric might just spell out a winning formula for new graduates who choose massage therapy school to pave a new path in their lives.
