Yes. Yes, I know what I said. Today is re-evaluation day.

This morning, a side-project that I’ve been working on for twenty five months suffered the loss of a steadfast collaborator. This was not a big dramatic blow-up. The collaborator is still a dear friend and we parted amicably. I appreciate his reasons and respect him immensely. That said, it was a big change and it made today feel like a good day to re-evaluate my strategies.

You can probably see where this is going.

Massive Sqwertz is now officially on proper hiatus. There will be no more weekly updates and the site will not be updated again until Episode 2 – the script for which is currently a copse of trees.

The new strategy is “concentrate on one project at a time.” My ongoing job search compels me to prioritize something commercial. Massive Sqwertz is a favorite but not, I think, “something commercial.”

You’ve been a great audience and I’ve been lucky to have you. Thank for reading.

This was done with the iOS app “Procreate” which I’m really enjoying. I wanted to give the character a little “body English.”

New NOSE! New nose, everybody!

Yeah, the Sqwertz nose has never been a slam dunk. When it looked exactly like I wanted it to look, my wife observed that it looked like Tiny was smoking a pipe. Ouch.

So, bundled with a rapid fire shading technique I tried a new nose angle, shape and nostril rendering. And I’m still refining the leaf-toga, acorn-hat thing.

Any tips for how I could do the nose the hat or the toga better? If you’re of artistic bent and send the suggestion as a sketch – I’ll post it with next week’s update!

Hey. Thought you might enjoy a look at the art process I’m mucking around with now to produce artwork like the piece above.

First comes the silhouette. I draw this in Flash using the brush tool with “object drawing” turned on so I can scoop up any brushstroke individually and scoot it around or angle it.

Good so far – I consider this a reasonably distinctive silhouette that’s pretty expressive and silly. Next is automatic outlining of the shape with the ink bucket tool.

Not bad. Not amazing – this stage could use some tweaking but it’s batmobile-fast so I’m not quite ready to give up on it. Next is adding some the fine line-work for everything but the face.

Thick outlines and thin details are pretty standard in cartooning so I’m feeling pretty good about this stage too. It makes a big difference already and gives me a chance to add some flourishes of brush-stroke to personalize.

The nose has already gone off the rails at this point (when will I give up and just use Smurf noses?) but the ears, the acorn hat and the hands all came out almost to my satisfaction. Next I make a new layer, zoom in to 250% and spend considerable time tweaking the facial expression.

From there it’s a simple matter of using the paint bucket tool to fill in the paint-by-numbers areas of color created with the line-work.

Next week I’ll see if I can’t come up with something impressive for the silhouette-outlining stage, continue to tweak colors, outfit and prolong the endless battle of the nose.

Still playing around with this new technique. I like the shapes reasonably well and I like the carefree line on Narcissism Sqwertz’s little tunic but I’m not that crazy about the eyes and the eyelashes have been a persistent problem (notably on Pris). Hmm. I must reflect on this….

Now here we GO!

They say that any great cartoon character design is recognizable by their silhouette, and in my opinion it’s true. Muscle Sqwertz here was set down as colors first  – effectively painting BY silhouette, then I auto-outlined that silhouette with the ink bucket tool and THEN filled in the delicate line work (face, tattoo and acorn hat) last.

The nose is a little weird. And that tattoo doesn’t quite come across. More experimentation is clearly needed, but I think this was a big step in the right direction: fast and expressive with the priority on shape.

What do you guys think of this artwork? Be honest. Pain is pleasure.

Sex and gender in Smurf Village are delightfully vague (and, as in this scene from the movie Donnie Darko, hotly debated).  What do we know for sure? Women are the product of evil wizards.

Tiny (and Monster) played the role of the “Smurfette” archetype in the Massive Sqwertz-iverse but we’ll definitely meet a female Sqwertz in Episode 2.

I’m thinking “Lady Sqwertz.” What do you think?

I decided that “Hiatus Hi-jinks” was a bit cheeky and went with “Hiatus Hilarity” which, if overstating the comedy content, sounds a little fresher to my ear. Here’s one showcasing a denizen of Sqwertz Village who we haven’t met, drawn in almost the crudest possible fashion.

I’m still in the scripting stage of Massive Sqwertz: Episode 2 and have nothing else to report.

Thus concludes the first episode of Massive Sqwertz! Tiny rejoins Sqwertz Village and all, if not forgotten, is copacetic.

In Episode 2, everything will be different. And I’m not sure how.

Here’s my guess: the art will be reminiscent, but significantly changed. It will remain in color. There may be fewer panels, but they may come more often.

The ongoing story will concern the ongoing adventures of Tiny Sqwertz and his double life between Sqwertz Village and Everydale Elementary. Friends from school don’t know about Tiny’s home life (though one friend discovers) and the other Sqwertz don’t know where Tiny sneaks off to on weekdays (though one actually does.) There will be a storyline set in Sqwertz Village about a challenger to President Sqwertz’s benevolent rule. There will be a storyline set in Everydale Elementary having to do with a third imposter from Sqwertz Village (not Tiny and not Monster). Then those two storylines will connect with disastrous consequences. We’ll meet six new characters in Sqwertz Village and we’ll meet six new characters in Everydale Elementary. Monster will play a much bigger role. The three imposters will become friends.

And I don’t know when Episode 2 is coming.

I do know that there will be something new posted every Tuesday until Episode 2 does arrive – short-form gags set in the Massive Sqwertz universe that I call “Hiatus Hi-jinx.” Look for them starting next Tuesday, 9 AM PST.

I spent a little extra time screwing around with the art today to figure out how Massive Sqwertz can change it’s development process for “Episode 2″ without losing its general aesthetic. This is absolutely do-able. And I have absolutely no idea how to do it.

It’s been a whirlwind month of school and work and script writing and wife-keeping in my new home, the city of Los Angeles. I let this little beauty get away from me but now I’m back on the Sqwertz and ready to negotiate a settlement with you, my faithful, patient readership.

That’s the last of the 3 shoes dropping.  1) Massive Sqwertz: evil wizard tries to discover location of Sqwertz village by creating an imposter Sqwertz (who’s a tad too big to pass). 2) Massive Sqwertz isn’t evil (actually really nice) but is ostracized anyway by the exactingly homogeneous regular Sqwertz. Massive Sqwertz finally finds acceptance by posing as a human child in a nearby elementary school. 3) Evil wizard’s day job is principal of the elementary school.

You’ll like what happens next.

Announcement time!

1) I’ve set a precedent for occasionally missing the 6 AM deadline, but I’d rather eat a million year old egg than miss a day. Perfect record so far (provided I can post this in the next nine minutes).
2) I’m now in LA instead of Geneva. I’m sleepy and looking for an apartment. Whatever. As I am now in LA the time is officially changing from 6 AM New York time to 6 AM Pacific time (Tuesdays and Thursdays). The leftmost & topmost graphic will shortly be amended to announce this change.
3) I’d eat a million year old egg anyway. I’m naturally curious. Like a pig.

Gross! But there’s nothing in PG-13 which says it can’t be gross, right?

Remember that stuff I was saying last time about two new characters?

No you don’t. Never happened. No. You. Don’t.

Moving got a bit hectic so I’m doing an extra gag strip for Thursday instead of what I had planned so stuff needed to squidged around a little. Appreciate your patience.

I like this strip a lot. The first line of panel two didn’t make me laugh in the script, but for some reason it really cracks me up on the page. I think it’s the juxtaposition with Tiny’s smooth and knowing expression because Tiny is NOT smooth and NOT saavy.

Next week – two new characters are introduced and one old character makes a reappearance.

OH… and I make an international move from Geneva, Switzerland to Los Angeles, California.

Ahem. Look for updates right on time. Probably.

If readers are a little confused, that’s all my fault and none of your own. If I’m lucky enough secure your patience – all will become clear soon. SOON soon. “This episode” soon. For now please enjoy this strip which clarifies some of the basics that I may have failed to communicate.

I think my favorite joke in this strip is in the first panel.

This is the third Massive Sqwertz jokes I ever wrote. The first joke, of course, was the top-level premise of a “giant Smurf.” This strange notion squeezed my giggle gland hard. Among the Smurfs he’d be a pariah and a misfit just for being “normal.” Still – such a Smurf, I thought, could be used by the Smurfs to infiltrate human society by posing as a human child. What sort of problems would such a Smurf have? Well, the obvious language difficulty.

Voila.

The second joke I ever wrote? It has to do with a Sqwertz dinner party and, I think, it is utterly uproarious. It doesn’t really fit into the episode 1 story line but I’m sure you’ll see it someday.

I’ve discovered the secret to happiness. The secret to happiness is making other people happy. Fictional people. Like Tiny.

I don’t know about you, but when I draw faces, I unintentionally make the faces I’m drawing. Not only do I have a mirror over my desk so that I can draw expressions from reference but, for some reason, my face also maps to the mood of my subject. Must be like how wifey tells me that she knows when I’m writing dialogue because my head bobs like C-3PO as I imagine voices and their inflection.

When I draw a strip like this, where Tiny is overcome with gratitude for his new situation, it involves a couple hours of me grinning, tittering and generally swelling with Tiny’s newfound joy that the world doesn’t have to be the way he thought it was.

So that’s the secret – make your hero happy.First, of course, you must abuse them terribly.

I don’t know why but that part’s fun too. Probably because I’m a bad person.

Tiny’s world of being big just got a lot smaller.

Happy 20th Sqwertz, everybody! I’m not sure how many webcomics “go on hiatus” before they hit their 20th installment but even 20 strips sure feels like a accomplishment from where I’m standing. Of course it seems that my contemporaries don’t really consider a creator to be “around” until they’ve hit the one-year / 100 installment mark and I’m definitely up to that challenge.  It just means you’ll have to wait a little longer to celebrate.

In relative terms we’re almost to the halfway point of the “the pilot episode.” Tons of fun and surprising things happen in “episode tw0″ but you’ll have to slog through three more months of this story before you get seconds. I’ll do my best to make it worth your while.

Thursday it is! Alright, friends – expect another new Sqwertz in just 48 hours and then every Tuesday and Thursday from now on!

And BIG congratulations this week to Adam Reid who’s film Hello Lonesome won the award for Best Ensemble Performance in the Narrative Competition at the Los Angeles Film Festival!

I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching my friends and I think once a week is just a little too infrequent to be getting a visit from the Sqwertz.

If – purely hypothetically – Massive Sqwertz were to expand to TWO DAYS A WEEK, what would be a good second day?

My own viewing trends as collected by Google Reader demonstrate that I do most of my webcomics viewing mid-week.

I suppose Mondays and Fridays are always a rush to get something accomplished. Saturday and Sunday are either spent away from keyboard OR on the computer but too buckled down with work to consume comics. There’s a sweet spot mid-week which means that if I want my comics hot and ready 6 AM when readers want ‘em that probably means Massive Sqwertz on both Tuesdays and Thursdays, right?

How’s my reasoning? Do you believe the webcomics-reading norms are different from my own habits? Can anyone give a compelling argument for another day?

Thus ends the WEEK OF MASSIVE SQWERTZ. How’d you like it?

I liked it just fine. Doing MASSIVE SQWERZ daily really helped me ratchet in on what works and what I’m not so crazy about. This is closer to the former than the latter but there’s still a few tweaks to be tweaked.

The text is finalized unless anyone objects (please object in the comment field down below).

I think the reading order glitch is pretty much sorted and I’m currently able to do both the stems and the pipes with A SINGLE BRUSH TOOL. That, combined with glow around text as opposed to bubbles, means ALL my lettering time is spent in artful layout. A bit of discrete showboating is in evidence in panel 3 and I can there being more of the same in the future. It isn’t “standard” bubble and it certainly isn’t “Peyo” but you just can’t beat the economy of space from a design point of view. If other cartoonists can crack an eye and look objectively at reader experience I’d can see this style getting much more popular.

TOP TIP FOR LETTERING COMICS: I letter by copying from my script one blurt at a time and then pasting those blurts into pre-glowed “Lorem Ipsum” text blocks using the brilliant free clipboard software for Macs, Jumpcut. That means not going back and forth between my script software (Scrivener) and my drawing software (Flash) and that’s a substantial time savings as well.

PHEW!

What fun! I’d love to do another week of Sqwertz as soon as it’s feasible. And I’d like nothing more than to eventually go daily. Until one of those things happens – see you Tuesday, 6 AM!

UPDATE: I added panel borders. I fought it for this long because no-borders seemed more in keeping with my mobile-device-comics philosophy of “edge of the glass = edge of the comic” but, ultimately, the eye just wants a bit more anchoring in a full sized window while the difference isn’t very noticeable on devices.

Long live my new found acceptance of virtually universal comic norms!

OHHHH! Of course! A completely homogeneous race of identical little men would be unconsciously racist in a thousand different ways! And, in this writers opinion, little racists are big funny. President Sqwertz’s botched magic spell has only made Tiny more of a pariah and the only family he has will never accept him for reasons he cannot change.

Could things get any worse for our friend Tiny?

Momentarily.

Only mid-way through THE WEEK OF MASSIVE SQWERTZ and I’m already learning a ton about how to refine my Sqwertzing process. Installment #3 (SQWERTZ me once, shame on you…) is still my favorite in terms of artwork and I’m detecting a swing back around to that style for every installment. That’s pretty exciting for me and that means I’ll soon have an official style guide with nothing less than…

A STANDARDIZED SQWERTZ.

You heard me right – no more fooling around. Soon I will have locked down the character design for every character and the look of the individual characters will stop shifting around so much. That’ll be a real benchmark in the long trek towards “ideal.”

This installment also features the first use of a 2-part split panel. Not too shabby – but what do you think?

Perhaps you’ve noticed that Massive Sqwertz seems to be updating a little behind. Don’t believe your eyes – ’tis only a trick of the light.

True fact – I’ve got some weird updating bug where the newest post doesn’t get pushed to the front page. If you consult the Massive Sqwertz subscription feed I think you’ll find the timestamp bears out that I’m still posting on time despite those funny bloops and bleeps coming from the magic blinky box.

Thanks for your patience as I try to get that sorted. And, as always, see you next Tuesday. 6 AM on the tick.

Oh yeah, definitely strip three – right? Strip four is fine, but I’m a much bigger fan of seeing a bit of art re-used (especially in the background) if it means more detail on the characters. And I’m still not 100% happy with the character design of those little Sqwertz – something just a little… bit… Sqwertz. Do you know what I mean?

And what gives, Brett?! TWO commercial messages?!

Oh yeah – well,  one “commercial message” and one “public service announcement.” In the future there could be as many as three “commercials” for every strip as those advertisements are simply one of the best ways to finance Massive Sqwertz if we all agree that we do want daily.

I’ve come up with some ideas to mitigate the underlying problem of advertising: advertising is terrible, gross and awful.  Massive Sqwertz’s “commercials” will always be new, they’ll always have original art and I’ll always try to squeeze a gag in there. If I don’t have an “commercial message” lined up, I’ll run a “public service announcement.”

Want an original Massive Sqwertz commercial message for your product? That, as they say in those horrendous, terrible advertisements, is “coming soon.”

What’s all this?!

The indirect result of the British Airlines strike which cancelled a flight intended to get me home in time.

Today’s scheduled strip will be delayed a week and replaced with this special retroactive strip set in the jumpcut between the events of strip 4 and strip 5 (The as-yet-unnamed massive Sqwertz has recently failed to blend in with the Sqwertzberry picking expedition – but is not yet tied to the ground with a thousand tiny ropes).

Rest assured that I probably won’t ever have to pull this kind of “experimental” (unneccesary) time-shifting again but 1) I have to give you something good by deadline if I want to keep my committment, 2) I really want you to see today’s scheduled strip in it’s fully illustrated glory 3) I can admit I probably dropped a beat by failing to write this fun scene in originally.

The above was drawn on a red eye flight between Dallas and Frankfurt, photographed on my iPhone and uploaded with only 28 minutes to spare. Fun! Once I’m de-lagged this will be illustrated as a regular strip and tucked into the appropriate reading order.

Perhaps you’ve noticed small (unbelievably large) variation in the artwork and character design over the past four strips – good eye. That’s because I’m still refining the look of MASSIVE Sqwertz and I’ve given myself the license to play around a little before I “lock down” the look of the comic. You have my gratitude for coming along on that hayride.

So, how’s that going?

I think the art in strip 3 is my favorite so far. I love the look of Gargledoo and I’m enjoying making him more detailed and delightfully gross each time I draw him. He’s one crooked cat and don’t you forget it.

The biggest potential change? I’m not entirely convinced MASSIVE Sqwertz wouldn’t be better in black and white. Sure, color’s nice, but is it nice enough to justify the extra time spent on each comic? What do you think?

I bet you’ve noticed that I’m a HUGE fan of syndication for webcomics  – that giant orange cherry bomb in the upper right corner ain’t just for looks. The ability to subscribe to a comic via RSS, Twitter, Facebook or email delivery is one of the things that separates a true “webcomic” from something else – I dunno, a comic merely “on the web.” Blogs produce RSS. Podcasts produce RSS. I think Webcomics should too.

Subscribers may have noticed a bug using Google Reader – a pile up of test posts that have been deleted from the real RSS feed, but that remain forever frozen in Google’s all-remembering mystery cache. It has been a personally fulfilling journey of discovery trying to remove those untidy artifacts and I enjoy it… enduringly. I’ve tried Google’s URL remover to point-out that these ghost pages are all 404 but the changes aren’t instant so I may not know if it has worked for months.

I encourage you early super-fans to delight in this “bonus content” and take screenshots to signify that you were a fan of MASSIVE Sqwertz back before ol’ Bretty had his act – in any sense – together. Oh how we’ll laugh!

Massive Sqwertz is a three year commitment. It’ll be new and on time every Tuesday with the intent of additional weekly installments as the readership grows. Then, if in 3 years I have the readership I want, I’ll do Massive Sqwertz forever.

Here’s the arrangement – Massive Sqwertz isn’t for kids, but it’ll stay nicely PG-13.  Each “episode” takes about 40 installments to complete and installments come out weekly. I’d love to go daily and, if you’d love it too, here’s how that can happen.
