First, we would like to thank everyone who participated in our Mastercam Curriculum Survey. Your collective insight helps us better develop our Mastercam Training Solutions.

Second, congratulations are in order! Our trusty go-to random number generator at random.org picked lucky number 117 which belonged to:

But wait! There is something in this post for the rest of you too! We thought we’d share a handful of the more interesting survey results with our readers:

- Over half of you were running Mastercam X5 at the time of the survey:

- In the next question, 61% of you said you are going to move to X6, and 38% said you haven’t decided just yet.

- Nearly 30% reported enrolment in the 16-20 student range for Mastercam related classes and a total of 61% with class sizes consisting of more than 10 students.

- Collectively, the general perception is that students are most willing to adopt online based training materials (and/or eBooks), followed by faculty and lastly, school boards – nothing too surprising here. It does point to a significant bottom-up demand for such materials though.

- Interestingly, another question asking what you thought the benefits and drawbacks of using eBooks in your Mastercam classes led to a lot of “do not know” responses, or worse – misinformation about the technology. We will definitely address this further in a future post!

- A massive 69% of you weren’t aware that In-House Solutions offers eBooks for Mastercam X4, X5 and X6. If you find yourself in that lot, why not take a look?

- Finally, a whopping 95+% of you said you would subscribe to a monthly Mastercam community-focused newsletter that would notify you of new releases, run contests, promotions, showcase other schools, students’ projects, highlight hot discussion topics and more. Mastercam X6 hits the streets, our Training Solutions in toe!

Today, CNC Software (the developers of Mastercam) released the latest version of Mastercam as a download for current customers (full physical product is due sometime in the coming weeks).

We at In-House Solutions are happy to announce our launch titles for X6 as well. Available today, through our sister site www.emastercam.com (or by phone: 800-527-5517) are the following titles from the Training Tutorial Series: Mill Level 1, Mill Level 3, Lathe, Solids and Intro to Multiaxis.

In addition to the new X6 features covered, we are excited to announce that we are expanding the Training Tutorial Series offered in metric units. We have been publishing metric versions of our books since X3, adding to our library with each release. With X6, we are aiming for virtually every imperial title within the series to have a metric counterpart!

Elwood Educates the East with Mastercam

You may recall seeing the name in a previous blog post – Bruce King is an instructor at Elwood Regional High. A few months back, his school won the draw for the Mastercam X5 CNC Curriculum Sit License.

We decided to touch base with Bruce to see what else his students are up to.

Seen here, Mark Murdoch, a level II student in Design and Fabrication, inserts a blank to mill a cribbage board he designed in class.

Here we see the finished product.

We’ll have to check in next term to see how Bruce integrates the CNC Curriculum into his classes. For more information on the CNC Curriculum, grab the brochure.

Elwood Regional High School is located in Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The school has a long history of technology use and was the first school in the province to offer a Flexible Manufacturing Course which included CAD/CAM training for its students. Since then Elwood has continued this tradition and now offers a wide range of Skilled Trades and Technology courses.

It’s a good feeling when creativity strikes; an even better one when you can see the idea materialize! Thanks to the guidance from Mastercam Teacher Lloyd Bloomfield and a power-duo of design and manufacturing software, one student from Harry Ainlay High School in Edmonton Alberta, Canada got to revel in that satisfaction.

Whether the sign for the Design Studies department was in need of replacing or not was never the question – it was getting an upgrade regardless! The back-board and gears were cut using Mastercam X5 with their CAMTECH CNC Router.

In addition to the router, the shop also boasts a Mori Seiki Mill for other projects. Lloyd has been at the helm of the manufacturing program for 11 years now and has been a Mastercam user for 14. When it comes to choosing software and curriculum, this is what he has to say:

In-House Solutions will be exhibiting at the 73rd annual ITEEA Conference this coming week. If you are unaware, the ITEEA is the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association. Their mission is to promote technological literacy for all by supporting the teaching of technology and promoting the professionalism of those engaged in these pursuits.

Open to all educators, this year’s conference will be held in at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, MN from March 24th-26th. Mastercam Video Tip: Dynamic Xform

This feature gives you the freedom to translate and rotate geometry with a single, on-screen control. You now have a new way to manipulate your geometry’s orientation and location by using the interactive, easy-to-use graphical gnomon.

We want to thank all of you that participated in our Customer Satisfaction Survey. A lot of useful feedback was gleamed which will only help us improve the products we offer. We let the survey run even longer than last mentioned as a few more entries were trickling in but it is now time to announce the winner!

Lakehead University uses Mastercam for Formula SAE car.

Lakehead University’s “ThunderWolf Racing” Formula SAE team proudly unveiled their 2010 race car design. Over the past 3 years, LU students from various disciplines have been working towards building a team that operates like a small manufacturing company. Their goal is to build race cars to compete against the best of the best in a Formula SAE organized event each year.

This year’s event is being held at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, May 12th-15th.

The team chose Mastercam to help create what they feel is their best car yet! Best of luck ThunderWolf!

The Career and Technology Studies Conference is an annual event hosted by the Alberta Teachers’ Association starting today (April 22nd) in Banff, Alberta. This year’s conference theme is “Alberta’s Future”. The conference will feature speakers, workshops and round table discussions that will focus on introducing pathways to the future.

Until the event’s close, Saturday April 24th, Patrick Chelli of In-House Solutions will be exhibiting along with Electrolab Training Systems. This year’s showcase project will show instructors how to program a guitar in Mastercam, highlighting some of X4’s features.

Mastercam Video Tip: Custom Thread Mill Tool and Verify

This month’s Video Tip shows you how you can create a custom thread mill tool and visually see the threads in verify. It quickly covers creating a custom single point thread mill on a separate level and using the custom tool to create a threadmill toolpath.

The benefit of creating the profile of this tool is that the threads are visually represented as being cut away from a solid model in the verify interface.

“Will of Mastercam run on my computer?”

This question is heard a lot. So much so that the good folks at CNC Software came up with a nifty set of charts to answer that question exactly. Below you will find a list of operating systems and the various versions of Mastercam that each will support. But first, the legend:

The following chart references the more recent versions of Windows:

Interesting to note that X3 is listed as “not supported” (or at least “not tested”) on Windows 7 given that it is most similar to Vista with regards to compatibility. Suffice it to say that you very well may get it working, but any bugs will be yours to squash. Mission critical jobs are best suited to the recommendations here.

Mastercam Video Tip: Modifying Operation Defaults

Have you ever wondered if it were possible to save certain tool settings or specific toolpath parameters you find yourself using frequently? Mastercam allows for various settings to be specified as operation defaults so you do not have to re-set them every use. You can also save multiple default files so different users can use different defaults. This video explores how you can edit these defaults and suggests various settings you could change to take advantage of this feature.

Sneaking in one last post before we say goodbye to January for another year, we are excited to announce a new blog feature that will become a regular monthly showing. We received great feedback on our Free X3 Lathe Video Tutorial which is a great sample of what’s available in our Multimedia Bundles and included in select books.

With this feature we are taking a new direction: offering exclusive content to the blog in the form of tips and answers to questions we receive on a daily basis or other things likely useful to any Mastercam user.

We are open to your suggestions as well! Leave your requests in the comments section and you just may see your idea featured in a future post. Without further ado, enjoy the first Mastercam Video Tips release!

Custom Stock Setups

We are big fans of anything that can save us time and the tip we have for you today does just that by showing you how you can speed up the verification process in Mastercam.

Instead of setting up the stock as a rectangle or cylinder, Mastercam has the ability to let you establish a custom stock setup. This not only gives a more accurate visual representation of how toolpaths would run on more complex parts but acts as a time saver as well since there is less stock to watch your virtual tool chew through. (You don’t have to verify the roughing toolpath every time.)

This video will demonstrate two different ways of specifying a model to represent your stock setup. It also demonstrates how you can save a verified model to use as a stock model. Be sure to grab the MCX files to go along with this video if you want to give it a try yourself! (Grab the MCX files here)

Other areas where creating a custom stock would come in handy include performing a secondary operation on a part or flank cutting a block to a given shape or even reworking an existing part.
