IE Business School invites you to the Finance Virtual Master Class (online): “The U.S Financial Markets & Quantitative Easing”, by Henrik Lumholdt, IE Finance Associate Professor & Chief Investment Strategist for BBVA – one of Spain´s largest Banks.

About the event (you can CLICK HERE to register)

Date & time: June 5th, 2013 at 18.00 hrs Madrid local time

The purpose of this Master Class is to understand the different effects of Fed´s Quantitative Easing (“QE”) on both the US economy and on its financial markets. The Master Class will address the following topics:

- The essence of QE and other non-conventional Fed measures in recent years
- QE and financial markets
- QE and the US economy
- Fed exit strategies and portfolio strategies to match them

As the US economy is now giving signs of recovering in a more decisive way, investors are beginning to debate what will happen when the program is finally
phased out and “hand-holding” by the Fed stops. Mr. Henrik, as Chief Investment Strategist for BBVA one of Spain´s largest banks, will try to give insight on these issues.

About the speaker:
Henrik Lumholdt has been an associate professor at IE Business School for 10 years. He teaches managerial economics in our MBA programs, as well as a very popular course in Asset Allocation for finance students. Henrik holds the position of Chief Investment Strategist for Spain’s largest asset manager, BBVA Asset Management, and has over 20 years of practical experience in the capital markets. He holds a BSc and MSc in Economics from the Copenhagen School of Economics.

- Blog post written by Aijaz Siddique, current Master in Finance from Pakistan –

Every individual is unique and their struggles and experiences are unique to them, today I share with you my perspective about a student’s life in IE and my experiences in Spain and Europe.

I had never been out of Pakistan and never been exposed to the European culture. Every journey has some beautiful moments and some murky ones; my journey from Karachi, Pakistan to Madrid, Spain has its ups and downs too. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to accept the scholarship from IE and come here for the Masters.

I was really lucky to find a place to stay with an Italian, Spanish, an Australian and a Belgian guy from my class. Every now and then one of us would cook for everybody at home. I have tried some good food and some weird recipes (imagine apples cooked with fried rice and chicken). However, the effort was always appreciated and I was probably the laziest at cooking. Also, it was a memorable experience in that everybody shared something about themselves every now and then. The times I spent eating, watching soccer or travelling with my class fellows are memorable. Usually after a whole week of studying and applications we organize a gathering or a party at the weekends. Sometimes students are even able to organize trips to other European cities or around Spain.

The program is actually one of the most intense Masters in Finance programs. The fact that it covers our financial education in just 10 months makes it really difficult. However, as I realized towards the end of the program, it does prepare one for a job in an investment bank or any other financial services position. The rigorous course load, group projects, the applications and other activities force you to prioritize your life according to your goals. However, it is possible to manage all this. Group projects are a crucial aspect of the masters. Most projects are really practical in nature, so you might have to perform merger and valuation of companies like BMW and Piaggio or take part in a portfolio competition where you are competing with other class groups. The faculty is very good and is comprised of Professors who have significant experience working in the financial services industry and help students with job opportunities. I secured my part time work with the help of a professor and I cannot express enough gratitude to him. It gave me an opportunity to apply what I had learned in my job. Successfully managing courses and work requires a tremendous amount of effort.

Another thing from which I am learning a lot is my final dissertation. I have the opportunity to work with two people at the same time. The project in its entirety is a little bit difficult but it is quite interesting and motivating. It gave me a chance to employ myself towards studying a financing structure which has developed significantly post the financial crisis.

The Masters in Finance program has been a journey of self-exploration towards several aspects of my personality. In the last 8 months I have learned more about myself than I had in the last five years. One of the most important lessons to learn is that persistence pays off eventually. It is never too late to try and as we make mistakes we learn. That was also one reason I applied to IE. I can’t help but finish this piece with a line I cherish, “You have never really failed, until you have tried to succeed.”

Article by Moritz Heck, alumnus of Dual Degree International MBA + Master in Advanced Finance (class of 2012) .
Moritz is a passionate entrepreneur with a strong drive to revolutionize the offline shopping experience through the stocard App. After graduating from IE Business School, Moritz has been working on his business venture and is currently holding the position of Business Development/CFO of Stocard, Germany.

Are you tired of the mess in your wallet overfilled with loyalty cards and coupons? – The free Stocard app collects all loyalty cards on your smartphone and is now available on the Spanish app store. Providing users with personalized offers and coupons, Stocard creates a unique communication channel, through which offline retailers can reach young mobile customers. Moritz Heck has joint Stocard after completing his dual degree at IE Business School last December. He is convinced that the Stocard app has the potential to change the offline shopping experience. Working as CFO & Head of Business Development he can put the entrepreneurial knowledge into practice, which he acquired during his MBA and Master in Finance at IE Business School.

The Stocard app has already replaced about four million plastic loyalty cards for more than one million users in several countries. Now it also puts Spanish customers’ wallets on a diet. Stocard currently ranks 1st in the Spanish app store – just a few days after its launch. “Smartphones are the future. They can completely replace all loyalty cards with the free Stocard app for iPhone and Android”, says David Handlos, CEO and founder of Stocard.

Stocard is very easy to use: Simply scan your loyalty card with your smartphone’s camera. The app then creates a digital version of the card on your phone. Stocard already supports 100 default loyalty cards – from Club Vips, over El Corte Ingles to Shell Clubsmart. If a rare card is not on the list, you can type in the store’s name by hand and easily add the desired card. Whenever you want to use your loyalty card, just show your phone with the digital copy and receive discounts and rewards, just as you would with the plastic card.

In May, Moritz will be able to put his IE experience into action, when he will pitch Stocard at the biannual IE Venture Days in Madrid. Stocard has been announced as one of the ten finalists presenting in front of VCs from across the globe. This will be an excellent opportunity to find potential international partners for Stocard’s future expansion in Europe and beyond.

With pleasure, IE Business School invites you to the Finance Master Class that will be held in London, on May 16th (Thursday).

The Master Class: Valuation – Art or Science?
19.00 hrs, at DoubleTree by Hilton London
by professor Sandrine Naslin
IE Finance Professor
Former CEO of UBS Investment Banking Spain

The valuation of quoted companies is subject to a number of criteria but is it art or is it science? Professor Sandrine Naslin will give an overview of one of her favourite courses – equity research and valuation – making it fascinating for all those interested in the world of finance, expert or not. To ensure anyone can participate in the Master Class, the subject chosen to illustrate the course has little technical content.

Sandrine Naslin has 20 years of experience in Investment Banking, working in London, France and Spain. She spent 14 years as a top ranked equity research analyst covering a number of sectors across Europe, before spending the last 6 years of her investment banking career as head of equities and CEO of UBS Investment banking Spanish Office. Now a regular contributor to IE’s specialized finance courses and specialized executives programs, she also acts as an independent adviser to companies on valuation topics.

She will give us an overview one of her favorite courses, equity research and valuation, with a view to give us a feel for the typical organization of a course in IE’s Masters of Finance programs. To ensure anyone can participate in the Master Class, the subject chosen to illustrate the course has little technical content.

IE Finance Programs & Networking Cocktails

At the beginning of the event, Rafael Gonzalez, Associate Director of Admissions, will give an overview of Finance Master programs at IE. Afterwards, we will be holding a networking cocktail with finance alumni for everybody who is interested in the Finance Master programs.

You can REGISTER HERE to join us, we look forward to meeting you at this event in London!

Article written by Matt Buchholz | IE Business School, Master In Finance, candidate, 2012-13 | e: mattdbuchholz@gmail.com |

It has been an exciting week at IE Business School. This week, the MIF and MIAF students took part in two presentations that only programs of IE’s reputation can attract. On April 16, Oliver Steinki, former IE Masters student and Ph.D. in Financial Mathematics, gave a complex introduction on algorithmic trading. Then, on April 18, Maria J Nieto, from the Bank of Spain, gave an intricate presentation on current financial regulation issues, as well as the general future of the Euro.

The topics that Oliver chose to cover reinforced the importance and value of IE’s finance programs. Topics such as iceberg orders and using algorithm nuances to differentiate between profit generation, capital hedging, or a combination of the two were topics that, after seven months of MIF training, IE’s students were able to actively engage in discussing and further understanding. The central theme of Oiliver’s presentation was his own “ensemble” method: Oliver acquires already-successful algorithms, with typical success rates of between 49 and 51 percent, and combines each program’s strongest programs into an amalgamation which, during testing, has achieved a 57 percent success rate!

Maria gave a presentation explaining the systemic interconnectivity between sovereign debt, government debt, and bank debt. Maria also explained that this difficult-to-reverse cycle is further exasperated by the fact that global companies have been less willing to hold new Euro-denominated debt as assets. Then, after giving IE students a technical understanding of how the ECB functions, Maria and the students in attendance discussed the viability of EU-wide deposit insurance and banking governance, and how these medium-term measures may lead to a complete fiscal union, which eventually may require closer political ties. Although many of the evening’s participants reached general agreement on the structural options available to the Europe’s financial leaders and its people, there was little agreement on the direction that would ultimately serve Europe and the world best in the long-term. Perhaps, on this evening, the IE classroom was a proxy for the ECB, the EU government, and the European people!
