Lewis Conner of Norfolk Virginia and Oak Island

The Conner family was in Virginia during mid 1600s and they made quite a dent. The patriot of the family was Lewis Conner, born ca 1690 who is visible in the Norfolk County records as well as Princess Anne. He was the first owner of Oak Island in old Craven County, North Carolina, also owning lands in Jasper County and on Cape Hatteras. This property was passed down through the family for generations before ot was finally sold. There is no evidence that Lewis Conner Sr. ever resided on Oak Island. There is some difficulty tracing this family due to records lost, and one should also trace the Lawson family with it because of its connections. The Conner last wills and testaments are found on Virginia Pioneers and should be thoroughly examined to learn more answers, along with the friends and relatives mentioned.

Captain Kidd, pirate

Captain Kidd

Captain William Kidd was born in Dundee, Scotland, however, resided in Massachusetts where he owned a large house. and started out as a privateer. Privateers were not pirates, but licensed fortune hunters for various countries and dominions. During the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, spanish galleons were on the high seas seeking treasure, most in South America. A major plunder was Brazil where they took a lot of gold from the local indians. We all know the history. Meanwhile, other countries and monarchs were game for attacking pirates and other vessels which hauled treasure from the caribbean to Africa. Thus, they hired their own pirates to take the plunder from the vessels. The idea was that the treasure would be split amongst the captain and his crew, with the larger portion going to the monarch.

In 1699, William Kidd, possessing his Letters of Marque, commenced his treasure hunt, spending several years attempting to find treasure. But Kidd had bad luck and when he did not return with it, he was branded a pirate. Thus, the hunt began to find Captain Kidd. He was known to be on Madagascar, the island of the pirates.located in the Indian Ocean. Some of his troubles were recorded in affidavits filed by members of his crew in Charleston, South Carolina. (Another reason to read the old colonial wills, estates and documents of Charleston). History records that while in Newgate prison he attempted to obtain a release by offering to show officials where his treasure was buried. The authorities did not take him up on it because he was hanged on May 3, 1701 at Execution Dock in Wapping, United Kingdom. The name of his vessel was Adventure Galley, which was scuttled and sunk near Madagascar.

Privateers sailed the Atlantic Ocean to the West Indies and were seen off the coasts of New England, Charleston, South Carolina and Beaufort, North Carolina. This is the sort of history which one discovers by researching county records. The oldest American seaport cities provide their bounty in documents such as wills, estates, inventories, receipts, sales, affidavits, and deeds. Because our ancestors were the living authorities of history, to find the name of one's ancestor is not enough. We must explore the records and study up on some written history as well. There is history is just about every old record which you can find, from political correspondence and State Papers to church records. The records of some of the oldest cities survived, like Charleston, S. C. and Savannah, Georgia. During the 17th and 18th centuries these were major ports and just about everyone ventured there at one time or the other. Here is where to start gathering information:

Freedom is a precious heritage won by our Ancestors! But do we really know who we are? To learn some answers about ourselves we must look into the past...into the lives of those who brought us here. Discovering ancestors is not only fun, but surprising. The lineage doubles every generation (into the past), which makes for an unlimited resource of ancestors who were part of the histories which we study today. For example, it is easy to trace the lineage back to a Revolutionary War Soldier. Gosh! The pension itself is loaded with information about the battles they fought and famous officers they served with. You just don't know how this goes, until you read the pension. Then, there are the Civil War Pensions. Of course, the old wills, estates, deeds, tax digests really open the puzzle to a wonderfully new perspective. The old script used is beautifully executed with a quill and india ink. Some of these documents are simply worth framing!

The census records are not enough. To find ancestors, one must also research county records where your ancestors resided or where you thought they were. This is a must! For one thing, the records, such as wills, estates, marriages, inventories, sales, guardianships will provide names of heirs. Additionally, the tiny details which lead to the next source. For example, in the estate of Henry Holland of Jasper County, an Annual Return made by the administrator revealed a letter sent to Holland, Virginia. From there, it was easy to find this place as the family seat. Another resource are receipts from heirs sometimes found in the estates, including husbands of the daughters. Of course, if you look in the marriage records, that is where the marriage was recorded with the name and full date of the record. The 8 genealogy websites contain county records easy to view online! Why is Tracing Families so Difficult?

What is it about tracing families that makes it so difficult? It seems that the further back we go, the less information available. But is it a translation issue? For example, but a small percentage of the passenger records seem available. If you are back to about 1600 in the American colonies, a digging task of documents written in foreign languages is before you. In fact, the chore of locating which ecclesciasticial district or court to research in Great Britain can be daunting. Often it seems that written records do not exist. Yet they do. It is simply a matter of digging into official documents in other countries. You would think that the Federal Archives has all of the passenger lists and immigration records, but they do not. Here is an example. The first Georgia immigrants went before a committee representing the 22 or so investors in the charter where they were questioned as to their worthiness to help settle Georgia. You can acquire those names in Candler's Colonial Records of Georgia (which is correspondence between the Earl of Egmont and other officials in this country). Mr. Candler printed the correspondence which represents a source of names of persons who probably came to Georgia. I made a thorough study of these names and compared it with other documents in the colony to determine who actually made the trip. This study is included in my book (Colonial Georgians) which is online to members of Georgia Pioneers. My idea was to not only determine who actually came to Georgia, but what happened to them afterwards. So I traced the footsteps of those left behind when Oglethorpe returned his regiments to England ca 1744. Sometimes the genealogist has to read boring State documents. That is how I learned that the clan of Flora MacDonald was on a vessel in the sea near North Carolina when they petitioned for land. This historical event went unnoticed, yet helps to complete the history of the Scots who supported bonnie "Prince Charles". Every family has an interesting history! As stated, the reading of foreign documents is more troubling, but worth the effort. Sooner or later old wills and estates show up in county court house records. Loyalist Estates in Virginia

George William Fairfax, the son of Sir William Fairfax, a British Colonel who had served in the Barbados and served as governor of the Bahamas, was born 1729 in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Sarah resided in the Colony of Virginia but returned to Somerset, England before the Revolutionary War, to settle some property issues. They were Loyalists and thus remained in England until it was safe to return to Virginia. George William Fairfax, however, may have died in Somerset, England, and Sarah returned to Virginia. His prominent father, Sir Fairfax was a first cousin to Thomas Fairfax, the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron and acted as an agent for Lord Fairfax in managing his holdings in the Northern Neck of Virginia. After Sir William Fairfax moved his family to Virginia, George William became a friend of George Washington and Fairfax's older sister Anne married George Washington's older half-brother, Lawrence Washington. He must have been in the district of Columbia (Alexandria City) for some time, as his wife (Sarah) died there. Her last will and testament mentioned extensive lands in Somerset, England as well as the names of relatives and is available on Virginia Pioneers. Sir William Fairfax left George William his Belvoir Manor plantation, which had been constructed adjacent to that of George Washington's Mt. Vernon.

The Fascination of the Carters of Virginia

"Sabine Hall", Warsaw, Virginia

One of the most incredible family lineages in Virginia was that of Robert "King" Carter. Throughout the family and its successful marriages, they amassed over 50,000 acres of land and over 500 slaves. Landon Carter (1710-1778) built "Sabine Hall" in Warsaw, Virginia (Richmond County) ca 1738. Colonel Landon Carter was the father of eight children, all equally successful in growing large estates. He named a grandson, George Carter, presumably a son of Landon Carter, Jr. who was the last surviving executor of George's Estate. In 1798 George Carter, a son of Robert Carter III, inherited 3400 acres of land of the "Leo Plantation", which he renamed "Oatlands". For those who have not located this estate, it is found in Alexandria City, Virginia and includes 56 pages of affidavits from various relatives. The affidavits begin with John Cutter, the husband of Sally Carter Cutter (daughter of George) who stated that in 1807 when he was in the King Street home in Alexandria, that Sally mentioned that when she died she wished her mother to have all of her estate. The Carters owned numerous plantations in Virginia, most of which are available to tourists. The estate of George Carter in Alexandria City provides more information concerning his properties and names his heirs. This 56-page document is found on Virginia Pioneers . The website has many images of old wills and estates for the State of Virginia.

Captain William Kidd, a pirate?

Who can say whether Captain Kidd was innocent of pirating or not? Hired to be a privateer, he was accused of pirating. Many people of his day regarded him innocent, and indeed it does appear that the Board of Trade in London had a vendetta against him. Other than the fact that he had a bad temper, hard-luck and his crew wanted to usurp him, the testimonies are wanting. The affidavits filed in Charleston, South Carolina certainly contain nothing which points to it.

Evidence points to Captain Kidd in Charleston, South Carolina !

If you think that you have sufficient historical information about your ancestors, think again. Many people think that the evidence against Captain Kidd was flimsy and the trial unjust. Whatever, the situation, there are records yet to be studied. Such as two depositions taken in Charleston, South Carolina by former crewmen. These documents establish that the English Board of Trade and Parliament already had their case against the pirate, Captain Kidd, two years before he returned from his unsuccessful voyage to the West Indies as a privateer. The events leading up to it help piece together a puzzle of dislike and disdainment for Kidd's lack of respect for the British Navy.

The first records of his life date from 1689, when he was a member of a French-English pirate crew that sailed in the Caribbean Sea. Kidd and other members of the crew mutinied, ousted the captain, then sailed to the British colony of Nevis. The vessel was renamed "Blessed William", with Kidd as its captain. Captain Kidd and Blessed William became part of a small fleet assembled by the governor of Nevis to defend it from the French.As the governor did not want to pay the sailors for their defensive services, he told them they could take their pay from the French. Kidd and his men attacked the French island of Mariegalante, destroyed the only town, and looted the area, gathering for themselves something around 2,000 pounds Sterling. Kidd was afterwards commissioned to capture enemy privateers and was awarded pounds sterling for that job.  A privateer was a private person or ship authorized by a government by letters of marque to attack foreign vessels during wartime. The cost was borne by investors hoping to profit from prize money earned from captured cargo and vessels.

During the year of 1691, Kidd married a wealthy widow, Sarah Bradley Cox Oort in New York. In 1695 the governor of New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire employed Captain Kidd (as a privateer) to attack Thomas Tew, John Ireland, Thomas Wake, William Maze and other pirates, as well as enemy French ships. His new vessel "Adventure Galley" weighed over 284 tons and was equipped with 34 cannon and 150 men. However, as the ship sailed down the Thames river, Kidd failed to salute a Navy yacht at Greenwich. The yacht fired a shot to make him show respect and Kidd caused his crew to turn around and slap their backsides. The captain of the Navy vessel retaliated by pressing much of Kidd's crew into naval service, which left Kidd rather short-handed when he sailed for New York City. Nevertheless, while en route he captured a French vessel, and once in New York, replaced his crew members with hardened criminal sorts. He set course for the Cape of Good Hope, a voyage of beset with cholera which claimed the lives of a third of his crew. The search for pirates at Madagascar failed and he failed to attack several pirate ships. Further difficulties arose when the crew shouted open threats of mutiny and he killed one of his own crewmen. Kidd, a foul-mouthed sailor, was known to be cruel to prisoners and brutal to his crew. According to several depositions in Charleston, South Carolina, the "Adventure Galley" was labeled a "wicked" ship and the language of Captain Kidd was described. About that time Kidd was declared a pirate by a Royal Navy officer to whom he had promised thirty men or so.Kidd sailed away during the night to preserve his crew, rather than to cause them to be impressed into service. During April of 1698 as Kidd reached Madagascar, he met up with the pirate Robert Culliford. One of Kidd's crew members, testifying at the trial of Captain Kidd, reported that Kidd drank to Culliford's health and gave him a present of an anchor and some guns. It was at this meeting that many of Kidd's crew joined up with Culliford and only thirteen remained with the "Adventure Galley".Deciding to return home, Kidd left the "Adventure Galley" behind, ordering her to be burnt because she had become worm-eaten and leaky and returned to the Caribbean Caribbean aboard the "Adventure Prize".

Meanwhile, the governor of South Carolina forced a hearing and depositions were taken of former crew members in Charleston. In August of 1699, Captain Rogers testified of a voyage to Madagassar, when Samuel Bradley, Kidd's brother-in-law, had been put ashore three miles from town. Bradley had been sick during the entire voyage of the "wicked ship".   William Smith gave his testimony a year later, stating that he was a passenger from the Island of Madagassar in St. Thomas in the West Indies, aboard the ship "Adventure Galley", and that he knew Samuel Bradley who was sick most of the voyage and heard horrid oaths and wicked behavior; that Bradley was put ashore on Karawan and was given nothing (not even water) to carry with him. But this evidence was dismissed as inadequate, without charges being brought against Captain Kidd. Thus, it appears that the British authorities had declared Kidd a pirate and the evidence was being gathered. There are several depositions and records worthy of reading on South Carolina Pioneers. Here is but another reason to read old court house records!   Before Captain Kidd reached New York, he learned that he was a wanted pirate and sunk the "Adventure Prize" in the Caribbean Sea. Not long afterwards, he was captured and taken to England where he was hanged.

William Batte of Virginia

William Batte Sr. of Prince George County, Virginia drew extensive land grants on the south side of the Meherrin River in Brunswick and Isle of Wight Counties during 1719 and 1723, some of which later fell into Greensville County where he established a vast plantation. His last will and testament dated 1809 in Greensville County (available to members of Virginia Pioneers ) listed much of this land as well as a number of slaves. An interesting bequest of 200 barrels of corn and 2000 wt. of meat was bequeathed to his wife. The last wills and testaments of Virginians are always interesting, as they provide unique details.

George Washington Craik

James Craik, 1730-1814, elected to 4th, 5th, 6th Congress

George Washington Craik had a home with fifty acres on the Potomac River at the mouth of Hunting Creek in Alexander (City), Virginia. The property adjoined that of his father, James Craik of Alexander City who married a daughter of William Fitzhugh.

James Craik of Arbigland, Scotland, served as a delegate to Congress and represented Maryland from 1761 to 1814. He also served as the Physician General to George Washington who was his close friend. One of his three daughters attended the last illness of George Washington in 1799. It was Washington who persuaded him to remove to Alexandria City where he built a plantation called "Vaucluse". He also owned houses at 117 S. Fairfax Street, 209 Prince Street and 210 Duke Street. He was a friend of Mrs. Mary Custis. The last will and testament of George Washington Craik is available to members of Virginia Pioneers and discloses many interesting facts concerning his friends and relatives in Alexandria. Colonel William Fitzhugh

William Fitzhugh 1741-1809

Colonel William Fitzhugh immigrated to Virginia in about 1671 and owned 54,000 acres when he died in 1701. His name is frequently mentioned in 17th century records as he was quite in the affairs of the colony. He was apparently married several times, one of whom was Lucy Carter, the daughter of Robert "King" Carter. The Fitzhughs, Washingtons, Custis, Dandridge and Craik families had residences in Alexandria, Virginia (now Alexandria City). His son, William, inherited Chatham Manor. In 1804 Mary Lee Fitzhugh was married in the parlor of the Fitzhugh townhome to George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted son of George Washington. When Colonel Fitzhugh died in 1809, he was buried at Ravensworth but when the mansion burned down, his remains were removed to the churchyard of the Lorton Pohick Church. More details about Colonel Fitzhugh are provided in the last will and testaments of William Fitzhugh, formerly of Chatham, and William Craik of Alexandria City, Virginia dated 1814, found on Virginia Pioneers

Fitzhugh and his wife, Ann Bolling Randolph Fitzhugh (1747–1805), built a manor house (Chatham Manor) on the Rappahannock River across from Fredericksburg and this mansion is maintained by the National Park Service. About 1799, Colonel Fitzhugh bought the house at 607 Oronoco Street in Alexandria City, which was later known as "The Boyhood Home of Robert E. Lee.

Colonel Fitzhugh served as a Burgess in Virginia between 1772 and 1775 and was a member of the Revolutionary War Committee of Safety 1774 to 1775. During the war, he served as a
a commissioner of two arms and munitions factories and of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1776–1777. He was a Virginia state senator in 1780–1787).

The Alexandria (City) last wills and testaments record many political figures and provide interesting details as to their friends and relatives. Reading these old wills is like an undiscovered history book of new facts.

A Forgotten Patriot

One of the forgotten families of Jamestown is that of William Ludwell Lee who owned Greenfield plantation in the heart of the village. The site has been excavated but do not look for it on the tourist site of the replica village. First owned by the royal governor, Sir Berkeley, Lee eventually inherited Greenfield from the Ludwell family and it was still in his possession at the time of his death, ca 1804 in Alexander City, Virginia where his last will and testament was filed of record and is now viewable on Virginia Pioneers. The Lees were in Virginia during the early part of the 17th century and this is the famous family from whom Stonewall Lee and General Robert E. Lee descend. William was the son of William Lee who was born at Stratford Hall in Westmoreland County, Virginia. William Sr. was married to Hannah Philippa Ludwell in 1769 and for a time was the Sheriff of London. He also served as an agent of the Continental Congress during the American Revolution. In 1790, he accepted the post of James City County sheriff and was buried in Jamestown in 1795. William Ludwell Lee was never married, but, according to his will, as a personal friend of James Madison and as he apparently resided in Alexander City (district of Columbia) must have taken a post in American affairs. Lot of historical information is in his will and is certainly worth reading for the history lesson, if nothing else.

Thomas Bell of Northampton County, Virginia, died in1715. He was a descendant of Sir Robert Bell of Norfolk England who died there in 1577. His father had married the heiress of Edward Beaupre of Entwell, and she later married Sir John Dodington, Governor of the Tower of London.

The Batte family descends from Okewell in Yorkshire, England. John Batte was the first to emigrate to America.

John Batte, son of Robert, emigrated to America, chr. 6/24/1606 on Newton Tony, Wiltshire, England,
and died in Henrico or Charles City County, Virginia. The first record of him in Virginia is a 1643 land patent in Charles City County, Virginia. On 8/29/1668, Sir William Berkeley granted to Thomas and Henry Batte, sons of Mr. John Batte, deceased, 5,878 acres on the southside of the James River in Appomattock in Charles City County, beginning at the head of Jordan’s land and Merchant’s Hope, on the southern branch of Charles City Creeke, for the transportation of 118 persons into the Colony. Among those listed were: Roger Mallory, William Batte, Jr., Martha Batte, John Batte Jr., John Batte Sr., Thomas Batte, Henry Batte, Philip Mallory, Nathaniel Mallory, Nathaniel Mallory Jr., William Mallory, Thomas Mallor and Elizabeth Mallory.

Henry Baker of the Isle of Wight was a wealthy merchant, Justice of the County Court in 1685, 1698 and 1702; a Burgess in 1692 to 1693 and Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Isle of Wight Militia. Henry was the Sheriff of Nansemond County and Captain of the Militia; again Burgess from 1723 to 1726. He was bequeathed 2,500 acres of land called the Bucklands in North Carolina. The Tilghman genealogy dates back to ca 1275 and is extensively traced on Virginia Pioneers Members of the families were found in Faversham, county Kent, in England. The immigrant to Virginia was Roger Tillman from Kent who married in Prince George County, Virginia. Marriages were in the famous Abernathy, Wynne and Dixon families.

Cobb of Reculver Parish

St. Marys, Reculver Parish

Pictured is St. Marys Church in Reculver Parish. Reculver is a hamlet and coastal resort situated in southeast England, about 3 miles east of Herne Bay, in Kent, near the City of Canterbury. Afer the Romans left the area, Reculver retained its importance after the Romans left a fort there, a monastery was probably built over the ruins. During the Middle Ages the twin spires of the church became a landmark for mariners known as the "Twin Sisters", supposedly after daughters of Geoffrey St Clare. John Cobbs of the Manor of Richard de OrGeorgianer in Romney Marsh, Kent, England, later became known as "Cobbs Court" (1324). The family spent generations at "Cobbs Court" in county Kent, later owning Romney Marsh which was at Chislet in the Reculver Parish. There is a long stream of Cobbs who were statesmen and men of influence in America. Ambrose Cobbs, Jr.of Kent, England, came to Virginia where he died 1656 in York County. Ambrose Cobbs patented 350 acres of land on the Appomattox River in Virginia for himself, wife, Ann, and children. An extensive genealogy is traced on the ancient Cobbs as well as those in America and is available to members of Virginia Pioneers
