Researchers have set a new 2-way network data transfer rate record of 186 Gbps in order to help work through tons of information spewing out of the Large Hadron Collider.

The researchers at Caltech, University of Michigan, and others have recently cooperated to push the limits of the amount of data that could be transferred in a wide area network. Today the computer experts acknowledge that very large quantities of data are able to be crammed down optical fibres and sent throughout the globe from continent to continent. The speeds in question are apparently equivalent to moving 2,000,000 Gb per day.

Now they expect that new networks could be constructed in order to use the technology in the next few years, most likely within the range of 40 to 100 Gbps. The 2-way connection, both ways reaching 88 Gbps to make up for a combined 186 Gpbs, sent information from ten Dell servers from British Columbia and Seattle through an optical network. This broke the earlier record, set by the same team, which was 119 Gbps two years ago. Moreover, the researchers decided to show the globe spanning potential of the high speed information network, and that’s why data was also sent to some institutes located in Brazil and Korea.

This network will be very helpful in work through the staggering amount of information derived from the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN facility, where the scientists are now trying to work through information that has indicated the presence of the Higgs boson.
Thus far, over 100 petabytes of data has been processed. This is really an outstanding amount of information, which could be compared to a Blockbusters-beating 100,000,000 Blu-ray disks. Meanwhile, the researchers believe that it’s only the start, because experts of the Large Hadron Collider will smash even more particles together.

Microsoft Stopped Selling Expression

Software giant has come to a decision to kill a program called Expression. It seems that in its effort to copy Apple, Microsoft has been increasingly clamping down on any form of Expression in a hope that consumers would instead get used to a world where people do as they are told.

If you don’t know, Expression was a suite of Internet and design-oriented instruments and the company has been slowly pulling the plug on it. Vector graphics drawing instrument Expression Design 4 was end-of-lived, and Microsoft claimed there were new versions created, so it isn’t for sale any longer. The tool can be downloaded for free, and the program will continue to receive security patches for at least 2 more years. In the meanwhile, Microsoft announced there will be no replacement or alternative of the product.

In other words, the program has seen the fate of the HTML and CSS authoring instrument Expression Web 4, which is currently available as a free download. Microsoft has decided that it will continue to extend and develop Visual Studio’s HTML, CSS, and JavaScript capabilities. At the moment, the priority is given to the IDE as Microsoft’s main actively maintained web development tool.

In addition, the SuperPreview Remote service which let developers to view their pages in several browsers hosted on the company’s servers is also expected to be killed off in the middle of 2013. Expression Blend, the instrument for building user interfaces in XAML, will also find itself integrated into Visual Studio.

Actually, the only part of the Expression suite that seems to have any life left in it is the Expression Encoder, which is employed for both off-line media conversion and on-line media streaming. The code has both a free limited version and a Pro version which adds support for H.264.

Microsoft announced that Expression Encoder 4 Pro will be sold until the end of 2013 – the tool won’t undergo any future development and there won’t be any new versions. In the meantime, encoding, format conversion, and media streaming will be integrated into Windows Azure Media Services.

In other words, the software giant is ending the development of any tooling which is oriented at designers rather than developers. This is because the company had been unable to take down Adobe as the market leader and can’t be bothered working with designers.

Italy Acquitted Google Executives

An Italian appeals court has finally acquitted 3 Google executives of 2010 charges of having breached the privacy of an Italian boy with autism. All of them were arrested after a video of the boy being bullied was uploaded to the site 7 years ago.

This court ruling overturned a previous ruling in 2010 that had sentenced three Google executives to jail. Now the court didn’t reveal why the case had been thrown out. Of course, Google is happy with the news. The company’s policy manager told the press that Google was happy the earlier ruling wasn’t confirmed, and that the judges recognized the innocence of the executives. The company assured that their thoughts are with the boy and his family for the difficult moments those have endured.

Seven years ago, 4 students at a Turin school uploaded a mobile phone video to Google Video showing them bullying the boy. However, for some reason the prosecutors blamed the company for what happened, saying that the video remained on the Internet for 2 months even though a number of users had published comments asking for it to be removed.

Finally, the complaint was brought by an Italian advocacy group for people suffering Down's Syndrome, Vivi Down, and the boy’s father, and the plaintiffs were initially successful. Three years ago, a court gave each of the 3 Google executives, none of whom were residing in Italy, a 6-month suspended jail sentence. The company pointed out that the executives had nothing to do with the video and couldn’t have removed it even if they wanted.

The company claimed to have deleted the video immediately after being notified and helped Italian coppers to identify the uploaders. However, the case has exposed some odd aspects: for instance, Vivi Down was only involved because it was named by the boys in the clip. The suffered boy had autism, not Down's and they wanted to make sure that message was heard. In addition, the enthusiasm with which the court took to the company was considered suspect in the Italian press. The country’s PM Silvio Berlusconi also took part in a war with YouTube. This particular lawsuit is still ongoing.

Chennai based iBerry India, a brand associated with the manufacture of low cost Android tablets in the country, will launch its first GoogleIce Cream Sandwich tablet for the Indian audience in the coming month.
Based on Google's Android 4.0 ICS OS, the iBerry Auxus will be priced at about Rs 10,000 and is expected in March.

While talking to The Mobile Indian, iBerry India spokesperson Musthafa Kamal informed us that "iBerry India is getting ready for the launch of its first Google Ice Cream Sandwich based tablet, which will take place in the month of March. This will also be the cheapest ICS based tablet with a price tag of about Rs 10,000."

Initially, iBerry entered the Indian market with two Android models, the BT07 7 inch version and the BT10 10 inch tablet, which were launched last year during September. Following the launch of the ICS based tablet, iBerry has plans to launch a slew of new products in theIndian market in the times to come.

The 7 inch iBerry Auxus AX02 will have a 1 GHz processor with dedicated graphics engine for speed and better graphic capabilities as well. Along with that the Auxus will feature 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, HDMI output and support for a 3G USB modem.

The 7 inch display will have 800 x 480 pixel resolution and a capacitive touch based input system with multitouch for pinch to zoom functionality. For better gamingsupport it will have a gyro based motion sensor.

The device will be based on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system and will be capable of handling up to 32 GB of expandable memory via microSD cards. Also the device will get mini USB on the go port support for pen drives and other peripherals.

Hanuman Jayanti or Hanumath Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Hanuman, the Vanara god, widely venerated throughout India. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the Shukla Paksha, during the month of Chaitra (the Chaitra Pournimaa).

Hanuman is an ardent devotee of Lord Rama, and is worshipped for his unflinching devotion to the god. From early morning, devotees flock Hanuman temples to worship him.

Hanuman Jayanti is an important festival of Hindus. Hanuman is the symbol of strength and energy. Hanuman is said to be able to assume any form at will, wield rocks, move mountains, dart through the air, seize the clouds and rival Garuda in swiftness of flight. He is worshipped in folk tradition as a deity with magical powers and the ability to conquer evil spirits. The devotees visit temples and apply tilak of sindhūr to their foreheads from Hanuman's body as there is a common belief that Lord Hanuman loves sindhur. According to the legend, Sita was applying sindhūr to her head, Hanuman Ji questioned why was Sita applying sindhur to her forehead. In reply, Sita said that this would ensure a long life for her husband, Lord Rama. Hanuman then smeared his entire body with sindhūr, in an effort to ensure Rama’s immortality.

In Maharashtra, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day (pūrnima) of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra. A special feature of Hanuman Jayanti is that according to some religious almanacs (panchāngs) the birthday of Hanuman falls on the fourteenth day (chaturdashi) in the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin while according to others it falls on the full moon day in the bright fortnight of Chaitra. On this day, in a Hanuman temple spiritual discourses are started at dawn. Hanuman was born at sunrise. At that time the spiritual discourse is stopped and the offering of food (Prasad) is distributed to everyone.

Spiritual discourses are organised in most of the Hindu temples on this day. Hanuman was the most powerful in the three people the Heaven people, the Hell people, and the Land people. All these Gods had blessed him when he was just a 1/2-year old child.

In the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Margazhi (normally comes between Dec 15 and Jan 14). There it is believed that Hanuman or Anjaneya was born on Moola Nakshatra,on the new moon day (amavasya) in the month of Margazhi.

In Orissa, the Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the first day of Baisakha month as per Oriya calender (normally comes on April 14 or 15). There it is also celebrated as new year for all Oriyas (i.e. Maha Vishuva Sankranti).In Andhra, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the tenth day of bahula paksha or Krishna paksha in the month of Vaishaka.

Accessing the bindery files directly

1. Introduction

This document describes a command for accessing the NetWare 3.x bindery
files directly, bypassing the NetWare network API calls.

It can be used for fast bindery access, bulk user management, bypassing
security restrictions, investigating problems etc.

It is quite possible to destroy the bindery completely, or to reveal
information which could be used by hackers to obtain passwords. Users
are assumed to have a basic grasp of good procedures for security and
backup.

2. Command syntax

The basic format of the command is

bindery [options] bindery-spec action action ...

2.1 Specifying a bindery

A bindery specification takes the form

path/.extension

E.g. SYS:SYSTEM/.SYS. The path defaults to the current directory. The
extension defaults to .OLD.

Alternatively an 'active' bindery can be specified:

SERVER server

The bindery will be closed if necessary.

2.2 Actions on the bindery

INFO print info about the bindery
SCHEMA checks the bindery against the schema in BINDERY.SCH
DUMP obj dump all information for the specified object(s)
OBJ list all object records
PROP list all property records
VAL list all value records
VALDATA list all value records, with data
EXPORT export the bindery to a text file; see below
IMPORT import the bindery from a text file
ETC export user password information, suitable for input to the
password-cracking program described below

The following actions apply only if a bindery has been specified by the
SERVER parameter:
CLOSE close the bindery, i.e. make it available for direct access;
users attempting to access the bindery via NetWare API calls
will receive an error
OPEN open the bindery, which causes the server to reload it and
may take some time for large binderies
COPY directory
copy the bindery files into a directory elsewhere

3. Export/import

The bindery can be exported to and imported from a text file. This can
be used for various purposes:

- problem diagnosis and repair

- creation of large binderies given a set of user information

- compaction of binderies

- merging binderies or moving users between binderies while
preserving their passwords

To see the format of the export file, try exporting a small bindery.

4. Password cracking

Passwords are not stored in clear in the bindery. What is stored is a
16-byte value computed via a one-way function from the user's object id
and the password. Given the object id and password it is possible to
generate a candidate password which can be compared against that in the
bindery.

The ETC option of the BINDERY command produces a file containing the
required information, in a format superficially similar to /etc/passwd
on Unix:

userid:pw-hash:object-id:pw-len:name::

This can then be input into bindery cracking programs. Separating the
functions in this way allows various forms of parallelism:

- the password file can be split into smaller chunks

- the same password file can be worked on by several cracking
programs each with different dictionaries or algorithms

- cracking programs can be run on faster machines

A cracking program BINCRACK is provided which takes such a file as
input. It has command syntax:

bincrack [/verify] [/numsub] pw-file dict-file

/verify lists the passwords that are being tried. /numsub tries
substituting numbers for letters, e.g. "1D10T". This takes a lot longer
as all possible combinations are tried. pw-file is an exported bindery
password file. dict-file is a simple word list.

Versions are available for MS-DOS and for Solaris 1 and Solaris 2 SPARC
systems.

Angry Birds is a strategy puzzle video game developed by Finnish computer game developer Rovio Mobile. Inspired primarily by a sketch of stylized wingless birds, the game was first released for Apple's iOS in December 2009. Since that time, over 12 million copies of the game have been purchased from Apple's App Store, which has prompted the company to design versions for other touchscreen-based smartphones, such as those using the Android operating system, among others.

In the game, players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playing field. As players advance through the game, new birds appear, some with special abilities that can be activated by the player. Rovio Mobile has supported Angry Birds with numerous free updates that add additional game content, and the company has even released stand-alone holiday and promotional versions of the game. The game is also available on HP App Catalog.

Angry Birds has been praised for its successful combination of addictive gameplay, comical style, and low price. Its popularity led to versions of Angry Birds being created for personal computers and gaming consoles, a market for merchandise featuring its characters and even long-term plans for a feature film or television series. With a combined 1 billion downloads across all platforms and including both regular and special editions, the game has been called "one of the most mainstream games out right now", "one of the great runaway hits of 2010", and "the largest mobile app success the world has seen so far".

Gameplay

In Angry Birds, the player controls a menagerie of multi-colored birds that are attempting to retrieve eggs that have been taken by a group of green pigs. On each level, the pigs are sheltered by structures made of various materials such as wood, ice and stone, and the objective of the game is to eliminate all the pigs on the level. Using a slingshot, players launch the birds with the intent of either hitting the pigs directly or damaging the structures, causing them to collapse and eliminate the pigs. In various stages of the game, additional objects such as explosive crates and rocks are found in the structures, and may be used in conjunction with the birds to destroy hard-to-reach pigs.

There are several different types of birds used in the game. In the earliest levels, the basic red bird is the only one available. As the player advances through the game, additional types of birds become available. Some birds are effective against particular materials, and some have special abilities that may be activated by the player while the bird is airborne.For example, a yellow bird can increase its speed, a blue bird can separate into three small birds, a black bird explodes, and a white bird can drop explosive eggs.The pigs themselves also appear in different sizes. While small pigs are relatively weak and are easily destroyed either by direct hits or by debris from the damaged structures, larger pigs are able to sustain more damage. In addition, some pigs wear helmets as armor, making them even more resistant to damage; pigs with crowns or moustaches can take the most damage.

Each level starts with the number, types, and order of birds pre-determined. If all of the pigs are defeated by the time the last bird is used, the level is completed and the next level is unlocked. Points are scored for each pig defeated as well as for damage to, or destruction of, structures, and bonus points are awarded for any unused birds. Upon completing each level, players receive one, two, or three stars, depending on the score received. Players may re-attempt unlocked levels as many times as they wish in order to complete them successfully or to earn additional points or stars.

Development

In early 2009, Rovio staff began reviewing proposals for potential games. One such proposal came from senior game designer Jaakko Iisalo in the form of a simulated screenshot featuring some angry-looking birds with no visible legs or wings.While the picture gave no clue as to what type of game was being played, the staff liked the characters,and the team elected to design a game around them.As the concept of Angry Birds was developed, the staff realized the birds needed an enemy.At the time, the "swine flu" epidemic was in the news, so the staff made the birds' enemies pigs. The game's mechanics were inspired by other petrary physics games that have been released over the years, including another 2009 release, Crush the Castle.The initial cost to develop Angry Birds was estimated to exceed €100,000, not including money spent on the subsequent updates. For the iOS version, Rovio partnered with distributor Chillingo to publish the game to the App Store.Since then Rovio has self-published almost all of the later ports of the game, with the exception of the PlayStation Portable version, which was produced under license by Abstraction Games and then distributed by Chillingo.

When Rovio began writing new versions of the game for other devices, new issues came to light. As the team began working on a version for Android systems, they observed the large number of configurations of device types and versions of the Android software.The number of combinations of software version, processor speed and even user interfaces was significantly larger than that for the earlier iOS version. Ultimately, the team settled on a minimum set of requirements,even though that left nearly 30 types of Android phones unable to run the game, including some newly released phones. One month after the initial release on Android, Rovio Mobile began designing a simpler version of the game for these other devices.

In early 2010, Rovio began developing a variant of Angry Birds for Facebook. The project became one of the company's largest, with development taking over a year. The company understood the challenges of transplanting a game concept between social platforms and mobile/gaming systems. In a March 2011 interview, Rovio's Peter Vesterbacka said, "you can’t take an experience that works in one environment and one ecosystem and force-feed it onto another. It's like Zynga. They can’t just take FarmVille and throw it on mobile and see what sticks. The titles that have been successful for them on mobile are the ones they’ve built from the ground up for the platform.” The Facebook version was expected to incorporate social-gaming concepts and in-game purchases and was scheduled to enter beta-testing in April 2011; the game became officially available on Facebook in February 2012.

Future improvements planned for the game include the ability to synchronize the player's progress across multiple devices; for example, a player who completes a level on an iOS device could log into their copy of the game on an Android device and see the same statistics and level of progress.

Awards

In February 2010, Angry Birds was a nominee for the "Best Casual Game" award at the 6th annual International Mobile Gaming Awards in Barcelona, Spain. In September 2010, IGN named Angry Birds as the fourth best iPhone game of all time. In April 2011, Angry Birds won both the "Best Game App" and "App of the Year" at the UK Appy Awards.At the 15th edition of the Webby Awards, Angry Birds was awarded "Best Game for Handheld Devices"

Special editions

Angry Birds Seasons :In October 2010, Rovio released a special Halloween edition of game. Angry Birds Halloween, exclusive to iOS at the time and a separate application from the main game, included new levels with Halloween-themed music and graphics. In December 2010, Rovio released Angry Birds Seasons to iOS, Android and Symbian^3 devices. Seasons introduced 25 Christmas-themed levels, one for each day leading to the holiday, similar to an Advent calendar. All versions include the previously-exclusive Halloween levels and are offered as separate, stand-alone paid applications, with the exception of the free, ad-supported Android version; Angry Birds Halloween users on iOS received the Seasons levels as a free upgrade. The Halloween version was given the episode title "Trick or Treat", while the Christmas episode was entitled "Season's Greedings". In February 2011, Rovio released a new Valentine's Day update to Angry Birds Seasons, entitled "Hogs and Kisses", complete with new themed levels and graphics, as well as the option to send Angry Birds-themed Valentine's Day messages through Facebook. In March 2011, Rovio released a new St. Patrick's Day update, entitled "Go Green, Get Lucky",[88] followed by an Easter update, entitled "Easter Eggs", in April 2011 and a summer update, "Summer Pignic", in June 2011.. In September 2011, "Mooncake Festival" was released in conjunction with the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. On October 20th, 2011, "Ham'O'Ween" was released and introduced a new orange bird, known as the globe bird. In December 2011, "Wreck the Halls" was released with 25 Christmas-theme levels also arranged in an Advent calendar setting. "Year of the Dragon," a Chinese New Year-themed update, was released on January 20, 2012 (around midnight China Standard Time or January 19, 4:00 p.m. GMT). The update includes an episode-exclusive Mighty Dragon. Its function is the same as the Mighty Eagle, but it can be used even by iOS users who have not purchased the Mighty Eagle, as well as Android and Symbian^3 users, whose versions do not carry the Mighty Eagle. Another new update came on March 7, 2012 with the Japanese/Hanami-themed episode "Cherry Blossom". This was announced earlier by Rovio Entertainment's Antti Sonninen in the ADC Meetup Sound event on February 29.

Angry Birds Rio:Rovio launched Angry Birds Rio in March 2011. In this version, based on the 20th Century Fox animated film Rio, the Angry Birds characters appear in Rio de Janeiro and interact with characters from the film. Angry Birds Rio initially included two chapters including a warehouse chapter entitled "Smuggler's Den" and a jungle chapter entitled "Jungle Escape", but it has been updated with additional chapters and levels including a beach chapter entitled "Beach Volley", a carnival chapter entitled "Carnival Upheaval", an airfield chapter entitled "Airfield Chase", and one more chapter as "Smuggler's Plane." Angry Birds Space: In February 2012, Rovio announced a new game in the Angry Birds franchise to be called Angry Birds Space. Angry Birds Space launched on March 22, 2012 and features elements from the preceding Angry Birds games as well as new gameplay mechanics. The game contains 60 initial levels with extra levels available as free updates and in-app purchases. Angry Birds Space launched on iOS, Android, PC, and Mac, with a Windows phone release to follow. For the launch of the game, Rovio partnered with wireless carrier T-Mobile to erect a 300-foot tall contraption, with a 35-foot tall red bird resting in it at the Seattle Space Needle to make it look like a giant slingshot.

On March 8, 2012, new footage of Angry Birds Space, presented by NASA astronaut Don Pettit onboard the International Space Station, was released. The video shows that the game's stage is no longer flat, instead comprising several different planets, each of which has its own gravitational field that affects the trajectory of the birds after launch.

NASA states that such collaboration with Rovio Mobile may share the excitement of space with the Angry Birds community, educate users on NASA’s programs, and create interactive educational experiences for the public

The game also features new bird characters that carry their own unique abilities.As of March 26, 2012 Angry Birds Space has been downloaded a total of 10 million times since launching on iOS, Android, PC and Mac.

Angry Birds Magic: A special version of the game, called Angry Birds Magic, will be developed exclusively for Nokia's NFC-enabled Symbian devices. This version of the game will include functionality that will unlock game levels upon contact with another NFC-enabled phone running the game. A free version of Angry Birds Magic came preinstalled with all NFC Symbian devices to be sold in 2011, starting with the Nokia C7.

In March 2012, Rovio announced plans for an Angry Birds attraction due to open in summer 2012 at the Särkänniemi adventure park in Finland.

Also in March 2012, Formula 1 driver Heikki Kovalainen unveiled an Angry Birds crash helmet that he will use in the 2012 season, following sponsorship from Rovio. Kimi Räikkönen has also a Angry Birds Space logo on his cap.

A TV series based on the game is expected to make its debut in the second quarter of 2012. Initially it will consist of 52 episodes, with a duration between two and a half and three minutes each. Also, a full-length feature film is expected for release in 2013–2014.

MSVCR100.DLL error

There is one other thing that got my time in the past week. One error, and a very consistent one.

"c:\windows\system32\msvcr100.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error"

The proposed solution is to reinstall the application.

That means I have to reinstall Visual Studio 2010.

That means reinstalling Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.

Etc., etc., etc.

The funny thing that I did is to search out a possible solution to this problem, and what I found in the web is to simply download the dll file with the same name, which I did, msvcr100.dll, from a page in the world wide web who knows where, but I completely trusted without a question or doubt, then tried to copy it to the folder as instructed.

As it turned out, what was offered is for 32-bit OS, and since I'm running 64-bit, the file was not recognized.

Then I realized, it could be loaded with virus!

My, my. I simply swallowed the hook, line and sinker.

I paused a bit, then some more, and as I regained my composure and my wits returned to their proper places, I went to msdn, and searched for ways to fix MSVCR100.DLL error.

I found the solution on reinstalling the MS Visual C++ redistributable package, and I downloaded the exe file, ran it, and voila! That solved my problem!

Which file was that again? vcredist_x86.exe.

I actually wasted a lot of time following the 'try reinstalling' proposal, which I did a number of times, and if you know how long it takes for the installation to run, you would know how long I kept my laptop up, and myself...

What actually got me into this broil?

I was applying the VS2010 SP1 patch - and if you know this - it takes forever to install! The patch was in the middle of installation, and with my laptop set to shutdown automatically at 2am, that's where my problem began. The auto shutdown kicked in before the SP1 patch completed.

I was actually leaning away from solutions provided by MS, but the things happening lately, it is changing my mind. I guess for the better.

Too much politics, I guess.
