Math Team Canada 2013 chosen for International Mathematical Olympiad

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the selection of Math Team Canada 2013. This year, six students will travel to Santa Marta, Colombia and compete for Canada in the 54th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), from July 18-28.

Peter Taylor to receive prestigious research award

CMS member Peter Taylor (Queen`s) has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 Partners in Research (PIR) Mathematics Ambassador Award. Winners of the PIR Ambassador awards are selected based on their excellence in Canadian research and for contributions to public outreach activities. Peter Taylor will be recognized at the PIR National Awards on June 2, 2013.

President’s Advisory Council (PAC)

The CMS has established a President’s Advisory Council (PAC) to honour the leadership and engagement of past CMS Presidents and Executive Directors. By creating the PAC, council members will have a unique forum within which they will be able to provide a CMS President with advice and guidance. The PAC Chair is the current CMS Past-President or as designated by the CMS President.

The Canada and international launch of Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE2013) will take place on December 7th at the CMS Winter Meeting in Montreal. More than 100 societies, universities, research institutes, and organizations have joined in a major world-wide initiative: Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) 2013. This year-long effort will highlight the contributions made by mathematics in tackling global problems, including natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis; climate change; sustainability; and pandemics.
