Catch Me if You Can America's Horse Daily

2012-04-28T00:50:00.001-07:00

Be a "thinking horseman" when you pick up the halter.

Curt Pate says we should remember that every time we touch our horse, we're training him. Journal photo.

By AQHA Professional Horseman Curt Pate in America's Horse

Before working with a young horse, learn how to correctly catch and saddle him.

In all aspects of horsemanship, horses know when we know, and they know when we don't know. Skills like catching a horse carry over to riding. If we have the confidence gained from skillfully catching a horse, and if we're already acting like "thinking horsemen," we're well on the way to becoming better riders.

These basic tasks will also give you a good reality check. If none of your horses want to be caught, that might be telling you something. Or if you can't saddle your horse while he's untied, you might not be ready to go round up cattle. You need to develop a solid foundation.

Let's say I have a horse in the pasture that I know I can't catch. I won't even go out there and try it, because that would just teach him to get away from me. I'll go get a saddle horse and bring the horses in to a smaller enclosure, or I might even use grain to make that horse want to be with me.

In AQHA's FREE Halter Horse Expression report, you'll learn the secrets to completing your horse's "total look" in the halter arena.

But with a horse that I have a chance with, I'll think about catching his front feet. I don't even think about the rest of the horse. I'm just trying to herd those two front feet to a stop. I position myself in front of the horse, and if he starts moving his head one way or another, or if he lightens up a front foot, I'll block his movement.

You can't play too close to the net, because it's easier for the horse to get ahead of you. If you're just a split second too late, he is gone, and that's when he learns he can escape.

I want to get him thinking about getting "heavy on his front feet," where he's not shifting the weight off either foot in preparation to step off. When that happens, I'll approach. If he starts to unweight a foot, then I back up and block him.

Before long, he'll decide that I've got him figured out, and he'll let me approach.

Whether it's in the pasture or in the stall, horses are sizing us up as we approach. They're reading us, so we always have to be reading them to stay a step ahead.

I'm constantly reading my horse as I'm saddling him.

The important thing to remember is that any time we have contact with our horses, we are training them – even as we walk up to them in the pasture or approach them with a saddle.

So if all these simple interactions are so important, how do we know if we're making mistakes? After all, our habits are ingrained, and a lot of times, we don't realize exactly what we're doing.

Get insider tips for getting expression from your halter horse with AQHA's FREE Halter Horse Expression report.

I think videos are the answer. Have someone videotape you catching your horse, saddling, getting on. You'll be able to catch your own mistakes.

Another good tool is to sit down and write an article on how to catch a horse. It will really make you break things down in your own mind and think it out.

And that's really what I'm encouraging folks to do: to be thinking horsemen.

Space shuttle Enterprise races along the NYC skyline

2012-04-27T23:51:00.001-07:00

Much to the delight of people living within New York City, the space shuttle Enterprise took off from Washington earlier today on its journey to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

On its final trip through the air, the space shuttle Enterprise rode atop a modified jumbo 747 jet and mesmerized residents of New York City earlier today as reported by ABC News. Coming from Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia, the jet made a couple flyovers while over New York City. This allowed tourists to snap as many photos as possible while the shuttle passed locations like the Statue of Liberty, the new Freedom Tower, the Sept. 11 memorial in lower Manhattan as well as the location where Capt. Chesley Sullenberger splash-landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River more than three years ago.

New York natives were also taking photographs from windows in skyscrapers and from the top of rooftops around the metropolis. NASA had to previously reschedule the trip for today after inclement weather kept the plane grounded earlier this week. After buzzing around NYC, the jumbo jet eventually landed at Kennedy Airport. On Twitter, NASA officials announced "Touchdown at JFK!" and included a picture of the aircraft.

The shuttle was previously housed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., but the giant spacecraft will be kept at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Manhattan's west side in the future. According to Intrepid president Susan Marenoff-Zausner, she stated the new addition to the museum will be "the largest and most significant space artifact in the entire Northeast." She continued "When somebody comes to visit, they will not only see the shuttle itself, but will have an engaging and interactive experience inside the pavilion." Officials at the Intrepid plan to construct the pavilion over the spacecraft during the next two months and open up the attraction to visitors by the middle of July 2012.

The Enterprise will remain at the Kennedy Airport until early June. At that point, the shuttle will be placed on a barge and transported along the Hudson River to the Intrepid. While the Enterprise has never been sent into space, NASA used the craft to train astronauts during test flights in the atmosphere in addition to conducting experiments while the aircraft was grounded. Other NASA spacecraft are being transported around the country for display after the shuttle program came to an end last summer.

Taking the place of the Enterprise in the Smithsonian, the space shuttle Discovery already traveled to Washington D.C. earlier this month. In addition, the space shuttle Endeavor will be shipped to the California Science Center in Los Angeles this fall after an aircraft hangar is built to house the craft. The nearby state-run museum is also planning to build a permanent Air and Space Center with the Endeavor as the main attraction.

The space shuttle Atlantis will stay in Florida and be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The $100 million exhibit is expected to by completed by summer of 2013. The new displays in New York City, Los Angeles and Florida are expected to increase visitor revenue significantly. According to Marenoff-Zausner, the new Enterprise display at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is expected to increase annual visitors by 30 percent over the next year.

NFL Draft | Stanford's Coby Fleener joins Andrew Luck in Indy | NFL ...

2012-04-27T23:50:00.003-07:00

NEW YORK -- Coby Fleener heard his name, grabbed his phone and immediately contacted his new teammate in Indianapolis -- and old teammate from Stanford.

The overnight wait paid off for the Stanford tight end. He's reuniting with his college quarterback, a guy named Andrew Luck.

Fleener wasn't chosen in the first round of the NFL draft, in which Luck was the top selection. He got a nice consolation prize Friday night when the Indianapolis Colts grabbed him with the second pick of the second round.

Among the other notable selections on the second day of the draft were: Oregon running back LaMichael James by San Francisco, Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson by Seattle and Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw by Baltimore.

Chances are very good Fleener will become a starter -- and a main target -- for Luck in Indianapolis.

"I just sent him a text message that had a lot of exclamation points in it," said Fleener, who had 10 touchdown catches last season and 18 for his career in Stanford's prodigious offense. "I expected to be on a team where I wasn't familiar with the offense or the quarterback. I can't wait to get started, to be honest with you."

Indy not only parted with four-time MVP quarterback Peyton Manning this year, but also lost tight end Jacob Tamme to free agency and isn't expected to bring back injury-ravaged veteran Dallas Clark.

"For me, getting to play with him the past couple of years, it is speed, he is dynamic," Luck said. "Anytime we crossed the 50-yard line it seemed like we just said, `Coby, go run. Go run past the safeties.' Hopefully it continues to work out."

The Rams actually used their own pick to begin the second round, selecting Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick. St. Louis traded down twice in the first round the previous night, accumulating several extra picks and also taking LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers 14th overall. In the second-round spot they earned for going 2-14 in 2011, the Rams took a wideout from an FCS powerhouse. The 6-foot-4 Quick had a strong Senior Bowl, showing he could play at the highest college level and helping his stock in the draft.

Upshaw of the national champion Crimson Tide was chosen by Baltimore, the Ravens' first pick of this draft. Baltimore was projected by many to take Upshaw in the first round, but dealt away its pick. Four of Upshaw's teammates went in the first round.

Janoris Jenkins, a cornerback at North Alabama who was kicked off the team at Florida, went to the Rams six picks after they took Quick. Jenkins, holding an infant in his arms, had tears in his eyes as he spoke by phone with the Rams.

"I just be honest," Jenkins said about talking about his past transgressions. "I don't have nothing to hide. That was my past, that was a year ago. I took my second route to go to UNA for a reason, to show people I wasn't a bad kid and I wasn't running from my problems."

Division II guard Amini Silatolu, a member of the Little All-America team, was the eighth overall selection in the second round by Carolina.

It took 11 picks before Friday's first trade, with the Jets moving up four slots and surrendering a fifth- and seventh-rounder to Seattle to take Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill. New York needs a deep threat wideout, and Hill was the fastest player at the NFL combine. But he also comes from a running offense.

BROWNS -- Colt McCoy's days with the Cleveland Browns might be numbered, but he's still a member of the team for now.

As of Friday evening, the Browns had not talked to other teams about trading quarterback Colt McCoy, coach Pat Shurmur told reporters at the team's headquarters.

"We haven't made any plans to do anything about anything yet," Shurmur said about an hour before the second round of the NFL Draft began at 7 p.m. "So we haven't made any phone calls. We haven't done anything in regards to Colt."

When asked if McCoy will be on the team May 22 when organized team activities begin, Shurmur said: "Well, let's not take it all the way out to May 22. As it stands right now, I've talked to Colt, and we're getting ready to draft.

"I talked to Colt this evening. He's actually going to Dallas this weekend, which he had planned to do. So he's fine."

Shurmur's comments contradict reports that surfaced earlier Friday. According to PackerReport.com, the Browns talked to the Green Bay Packers about dealing McCoy. Meanwhile, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported McCoy is not asking for a trade, though the Browns could move him.

2012 NFL Draft: The Cincinnati Bengals Are Setting The Stage For ...

2012-04-27T23:50:00.001-07:00

Three rounds up, three rounds down. It started with the team selecting Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and Wisconsin offensive guard Kevin Zeitler during the first round on Thursday. Though the selections weren't sexy, prompting over-joyous celebrations in the streets of Cincinnati, they found two players that could start the first game of the regular season as rookies.

On Friday the Bengals focused on improving the overall talent level with the interior portion of the defensive line, grabbing Penn State defensive tackle Devon Still (No. 53) and snatching Clemson defensive tackle Brandon Thompson (No. 93). Both players generated high grades among draft experts with Thompson promoting late-first to second round projections.

Though one could question the decision to draft two defensive tackles with their first five picks this year, don't question Marvin Lewis' vision to become bigger and stronger.

"Today's 3 picks we got bigger and stronger. What we've done thus far has helped us play the physical (football the way) we want to play."

In a division that recently witnessed the Cleveland Browns upgrading their overall rushing offense with Alabama's Trent Richardson and the Steelers upgrading their offensive line, the Bengals clearly reacted favorably in an attempt to neutralize those efforts. We're not saying that they're reacting to those selections, but they're reimaging the team back to a philosophy that fits with the division's charactoristics.

Mohamed Sanu's weekend, going from a prank phone call during the first round by a man claiming to be with the Bengals organization, to Cincinnati actually selecting him at No. 83, is poetic. As a possession-style receiver to complement the speed of A.J. Green, the Bengals have a legitimate player that could take up the mantle as the No. 2 receiver.

However the one position that's confusing some is the lack of a running back selected through the first three rounds. Though we've identified running back as a need, in the sense that we'd like to see it upgraded, we also acknowledge that infusing the position with new talent through the draft would be more of a luxury.

Think of it this way. Was Cincinnati's poor rushing offense the result of poor running backs or disasterous rush blocking? Football is always about the trenches and the Bengals, at least on paper, aggressively addressed last year's poor rush blocking.

Now if there was someone on their board that they liked, willing to put Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard and Cedric Peerman on notice, they would have done exactly that. Yet is it really that big of a deal when the team readdressed the offensive line, which should, by default, help the rushing offense substantially. Homerun-hitting running backs are beautiful. Consistancy, especially in short-yard situations is critical. And that only happens with maulers opening passage.

At the same time, much of how the Bengals drafted was enhanced by the sudden attention, if a running back was indeed a targeted need, of the Doug Martin and David Wilson selections that concluded the first round.

This hardly suggest that the Bengals won't have opportunities to improve the running back position, with the University of Miami Lamar Miller and Washington's Chris Polk still on the board. And if the team successfully drafted either running back, then the team improved their defensive line while also selecting a running back at a position that could use a little improvement. That's efficency and foresight. Good for them for not reaching, if indeed their board was setup the way their selections were directed.

There will be questions about this draft (should the Bengals have selected David DeCastro over Zeitler, drafted a running back, traded up for Stephon Gilmore), but it's hard to logically and intellectually dispute where they're mind is and how well the draft has played out in their favor.

Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper To Make MLB Debut Saturday ...

2012-04-27T22:50:00.009-07:00

At 4:34 pm EDT this afternoon, the Washington Nationals sent a note out to Nats beat writers advising reporters that a "newsworthy" baseball announcement would be made in a 4:50 pm conference call with D.C. GM Mike Rizzo. Right around the same time, MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats) wrote on Twitter that he'd been informed that RHP Ryan Perry had been called up from Triple-A Syracuse. "Did that mean a reliever was injured?" some wondered. Was there more bad news to come? Not exactly*. The information leaked right before the scheduled start time for the conference call.

The Washington Nationals placed Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-Day DL with right shoulder inflammation and called 19-year-old 2010 no.1 overall pick Bryce Harper up to the major leagues to make his MLB debut on Saturday afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Dodger Stadium. The Nats' GM made the official announcement at the start of the conference call.

"As you all probably know by now," Rizzo said, acknowledging that the news was already out there, "Unfortunately we're going to have to place Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-Day Disabled List with inflammation in his right shoulder and he'll be replaced on the 25-Man Roster by recalling Bryce Harper to the Major League roster."

In his second season as a pro after a .297/.392/.501, 24 double, 17 HR season split between Class-A Hagerstown and Double-A Harrisburg in 2011, Harper had a .250/.333/.375 line with four doubles, a triple and a home run in 20 games and 82 plate appearances at Triple-A Syracuse before he was called up today.

Asked why the Nationals chose now to call Harper up to the majors, the Nats' GM told reporters that the decision, "... is really a team decision. It's to support the major league club in really a time that we need an offensive player that can play corner outfield. It was a choice between a couple of players on the farm, Tyler Moore and Bryce Harper. Tyler Moore just didn't have the experience to play left field at the major league level yet, he's just started to play there several weeks ago. We felt at this time, we still have a very good and committed developmental plan for Bryce in place. I still believe very passionately in the plan and I'm going to be very committed to it, but this was expedited by the circumstances, by two of our middle of the lineup guys going down, [Michael Morse] and Ryan Zimmerman, and we felt that we needed to bring in an impactful left-handed bat that can play the corner outfield."

"I'm not going to commit either way that [Harper's] will be sent back to the minor leagues or stay in the big leagues," Rizzo responded when asked if the young outfielder was up to stay. "When Zim gets off the disabled list, we'll be monitoring the situation obviously on a daily basis and we'll make our decisions then. Suffice it to say, this isn't the coming out party for Bryce that we had in mind. This isn't the optimal situation developmentally for Bryce, although his last six games, as usual he started off the season fairly slowly, but the last 10 games he's hitting .290 with a [.421] on base percentage and some power numbers. The last six games he's hitting .313 with a home run.

"I just witnessed him playing the last three days in Rochester for the Syracuse club," Rizzo continued, "He's swinging the bat extremely well right now and looked very comfortable in left field. So with that said, we're not going to vary from our developmental plan for Bryce. I've always had in mind that I would love [for] him to get 300 to 350 at bats in the minor leagues and as time goes by and Zim comes off the disabled list, we'll monitor the situation and we'll make our decision at that time."

How long he'll stay is undetermined. The mystery about when he'll make his MLB debut has been solved, provided Davey Johnson puts Harper in the starting lineup tomorrow night. The Nationals sent Harper to Triple-A Syracuse with the intention of getting him used to playing center field after he'd seen time at each outfield position over his first year in the Nats' system, but when he comes up now Harper will play left. "We haven't abandoned the plan to play center field by any means, but the need for us right now is to play corner outfield," Rizzo explained "When he gets to the big leagues he will play left field because that's the place that we need him at this time. He's played all three outfield positions. We feel comfortable that he can play right, center and left. I went down there to see him play the last couple days just to make sure that he was comfortable in left and he looked very comfortable out there and played it extremely well."

Nats' skipper Davey Johnson lobbied for Bryce Harper to have an opportunity to make the Opening Day roster out of Spring Training if he earned the job. The Nats decided he wasn't ready this Spring and they sent him to Triple-A to get some work in at the only level he hadn't yet touched. 20 games and 72 at bats later, with the Washington Nationals 15-4 after 19 games, and relying on unbelievably good starting pitching to get them to where they are thus far, the Nationals' manager gets the left-handed power bat he said all winter and Spring he felt he needed. Bryce Harper will make his MLB debut on Saturday.

(ed. note - " * = Washington Times' writer Amanda Comak has since reported that a source says Brad Lidge is going to be placed on the DL with an "abdominal wall strain," thus explaining the decision to bring RHP Ryan Perry up to the majors.")

Jerel Worthy to the Green Bay Packers with the 51st Pick in the NFL ...

2012-04-27T22:50:00.007-07:00

Hello Packer fans! If you're reading this your team has drafted defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, and we'd like to commend your team's front office on such a splendid pick. I speak for many Michigan State fans when I say that Jerel was a pleasure to watch over the past few years, and we hope he will be for years to come, so long as it's not against the Lions. Here's a little more on Jerel.

THE COLLEGE YEARS

Mr. Worthy was a three-star defensive tackle by Rivals coming out of Wayne High School in Huber Heights, Ohio; he was ranked as the 53rd best defensive tackle that year and the 30th best player in Ohio. His first year at Michigan State was a redshirt year. In his second year he started in 11 of 13 games, recorded 9 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks. His performance earned him Freshman All-America honors from several publications, including the Sporting News, Rivals, and the Football Writers Association of America to name a few.

He started all 13 games his sophomore year and had about the same production -- 40 tackles, 8 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks; all these totals were tops for defensive linemen on the Spartans and the sacks total was at tie for team best. He was honorable mention All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media.

His junior year his production ticked down slightly, mainly due to being on the receiving end of many a double team. He still recorded 30 tackles, 10.5 of them for a loss, as well as 3.5 sacks. Not only was he on the All-Big Ten first team, he was on several All-American first teams, including the Associated Press, the American Football Coaches Association, and the Sporting News. Pretty durned good, I'd say.

STRENGTHS

Two assets immediately come to mind when I think about Jerel. The first is his first step -- it's a quick one, and it's often allowed him to get leverage on defenders and plug holes. The second is his ability to jump the snap; while I don't know how well that ability will translate to the NFL, when both those strengths come together this happens:

Really, watch that whole video if you want the greatest overview of Worthy's play, good and bad.

WEAKNESSES

Speaking of bad, the biggest black mark against Jerel is that his motor doesn't run at 100% all the time. It's true there were a couple games last season where he didn't look as dominant as one would hope, but I'd chalk that up to double teams, and most players aren't going to play at top speed all the time. I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

IN SUMMATION

Congrats! Worthy's had no character issues at MSU, so not only are you getting a good egg, you're getting one heck of a player. Even if he doesn't start right away (and even if he doesn't, it's hard not to see him constantly in a playing rotation), he can be a force on special teams, as he's blocked three kicks in his career. Once again, well done on a good pick, and hopefully you'll enjoy Jerel for years to come. I know I did.

Packers Select Defensive Tackle Jerel Worthy In Second Round ...

2012-04-27T22:50:00.005-07:00

The Green Bay Packers traded up in the second round of the NFL draft to select Michigan State defensive tackle Jerel Worthy.

The Packers moved up to the 18th pick in the round, trading their second rounder and pick No. 123.

Worthy, who was a first-team All-American in 2011, came out after his junior season. He finished the season with 30 tackles, including 10.5 for a loss and 3.5 sacks. Worthy is 6-2, weighs 308 pounds, ran the 40 in 5.08 and may be an immediate starter for the Packers. Although he played on the inside in college, he will step in at defensive end for the Packers, which could make a starting front three of Worthy, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett.

Worthy is solid against the run and anchored a Spartans unit that led the Big 10 in rushing and total defense. He can also get after the quarterback, although he didn't put up huge sack numbers.

This kid had first-round talent, but slid because of a ho-hum combine performance. Frankly, we love the pick. In fact, the way we feel about this pick is the complete opposite of the way we felt when the Packers selected Mike Neal in the second round a few years ago.

Here's the NFL.com analysis of Worthy.

Strengths: Worthy is very thick and powerful throughout his upper body and has thigh power that helps him blow back interior linemen off the snap. He has a surprising burst for a player his size and is capable of knifing and slanting the line to get into the backfield almost instantaneously. He is a leverage-savvy player who understands how to win with either his quickness or bull rush.

Weaknesses: Worthy gets upright off the snap and really has trouble if he doesn't win with a burst off the snap. He struggles in space and has a difficult time breaking down his weight to fit on a ball carrier. He can get neutralized at times by double teams, not out of a lack of strength or talent, but because of poor effort and a breakdown of technique.

Here's CBS Sports analysis of Worthy.

Pass rush: May not put up huge sack numbers, but is a constant thorn in a quarterback's side in pass rush situations. Swims past lesser linemen with a shake and quick, violent hands. Closes on the passer in a hurry once free. Will sometimes line up a half-yard off the line to give himself room to make his move. Does not split doubles regularly or have a great bull rush, often giving up after initial contact. Run defense: Packs power and has quick feet to handle one or two-gap run defense responsibilities in the box. Tough to move, stands up blockers when anchoring against the run. Brings down backs from behind within the box and straight up the middle, but does not regularly chase plays downfield or towards the sideline. Spins off blocks but doesn't have elite change of direction to reach quicker backs going through the hole once he's left it. Gets caught up in his man's chest at times, failing to get off to make a play. Quick backs elude him easily in the hole. Avoids cut tackles to stay upright, but lacks quick acceleration to get into plays away from him. Explosion: Impressive explosiveness off the snap, shocks his man with a strong initial punch and can also out-quick him to get into the backfield. Quick to get low, create a pile in goal lone situations. Gets too worried about contact or penetrating a gap that he sometimes forgets to find the ball. Strength: Already excelling in this area, should get even stronger in a pro strength and conditioning program. Strong hands allow him to shed lineman in either direction to catch backs coming into his area; consistency in using them could be improved, however. Once he gets a guard on skates, puts them into the quarterback. Takes his man backwards when slanting, also effective occupying two men on twists to free up the end. Tackling: Limited area of coverage results average tackle numbers for the position. Swallows up ballcarriers in the box with length and superior upper-body strength, though, leading teams to stay away from inside runs. Closes well on quarterbacks and running backs in the backfield and rarely gets go of ballcarriers once making contact. Has enough agility and athleticism to grab backs from behind after a strong swim move. Intangibles: His stamina and conditioning will be a concern for scouts unless improvements are made. Vocal on and off the field; points out potential hot receivers and run plays to teammates before the snap, something you don't see many interior linemen do.

Here are the obligatory Jerel Worthy highlights.

2012 NFL Draft Round 3 PICKS: Great Pick Or Bust? (PHOTOS ...

2012-04-27T22:50:00.001-07:00

Much like the first round, the second day of the 2012 NFL Draft was riddled with several trades and shouting from Mel Kiper Jr. and Jon Gruden on ESPN.

After adding one of Andrew Luck's buddies from Stanford in the second round with tight end Coby Fleener , the Colts added another target for the No. 1 overall pick with Clemson tight end Dwayne Allen (Remember, they cut Dallas Clark). Seattle created a tougher quarterback competition for training camp by adding Wisconsin's Russell Wilson to the depth chart along with Tavaris Jackson and Matt Flynn.

But perhaps the best story of the third round was the drafting of Rutgers wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, who was prank called on Thursday night by someone pretending to be someone from the Cincinnati Bengals telling him that they have chosen him with the No. 27 pick. Instead, the Bengals selected Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler.

But with the 20th pick of the draft, Sanu was drafted.. by the Cincinnati Bengals. Scroll down for the rest of the picks from Round 3.

Rounds four through seven begin Saturday at noon ET on ESPN.

NFL Draft 2012 Results: LaMichael James, Russell Wilson ...

NEW YORK -- Coby Fleener heard his name, grabbed his phone and immediately contacted his new teammate in Indianapolis – and old teammate from Stanford.

The overnight wait paid off for the Stanford tight end. He's reuniting with his college quarterback, a guy named Andrew Luck.

Chances are very good Fleener will become a starter – and a main target – for Luck in Indianapolis.

Indy not only parted with four-time MVP quarterback Peyton Manning this year, but also lost tight end Jacob Tamme to free agency and isn't expected to bring back injury-ravaged veteran Dallas Clark.

Upshaw of the national champion Crimson Tide was chosen with the Ravens' first pick of this draft. Baltimore was projected by many to take Upshaw in the first round, but dealt away its pick. Four of Upshaw's Alabama teammates went in the first round.

Division II guard Amini Silatolu, a member of the Little All-America team, was the eighth overall selection in the second round by Carolina.

"I feel great, especially now that I'm in an offense where I can catch the ball a little bit more," Hill said. "Catching the ball from Mark Sanchez will be great."

Hill pumped his arms to the fans in the balcony at Radio City Music Hall after having his name announced by Wesley Walker, one of the best deep receivers the team has had.

After New York and Seattle took the lead on trading Friday, the Rams – no surprise considering their earlier wheeling and dealing in coach Jeff Fisher's first draft in charge – pulled off another. The Bears swapped with St. Louis to move up five spots and get South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffrey

A smaller flurry of trades occurred Friday, five involving nine teams in the second round, five more involving 10 teams in the third round. Not surprisingly, New England, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Cleveland were involved in deals, just as they were in the opening round.

Two All-Americans defensive linemen were chosen in the second round: Devon Still of Penn State by Cincinnati and Jerel Worthy of Michigan State by Green Bay. Also chosen, by Detroit, was Oklahoma standout receiver Ryan Broyles, who wrecked his left knee in November after setting some NCAA career records.

"We have the luxury of being able to rehab this guy very carefully and let him get healthy," Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said. "If the guy was healthy now, he would've been gone."

Coach Jim Schwartz said Broyles wouldn't have to "redshirt" this season.

"I'm glad the Detroit Lions felt I was a guy that was capable of coming back from an injury," Broyles said.

James, the nation's leading rusher in 2010, went to San Francisco 61st overall. He joins a crowded backfield with Frank Gore and Brandon Jacobs.

The Giants finished the second round by selecting LSU receiver Rueben Randle, the last of 26 players invited to the draft to be chosen.

"I was just waiting. There was nothing else I could do," Randle said.

"This is going to be a great opportunity for me. Coming in with a great quarterback and a great receiving corps with Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, this will be an opportunity for me to help these guys out it."

Wilson, a standout at North Carolina State who transferred to Wisconsin and led the Badgers to the Rose Bowl, went to Seattle in the third round. Ohio State wide receiver DeVier Posey, who was suspended for five games in 2011 as part of the Buckeyes' NCAA troubles, was taken by Houston. Punter Bryan Anger of California, the first kicker chosen this year, joined Jacksonville at No. 70 overall.

New Orleans and Oakland made their first picks in the third round. The Saints, stripped of their second-rounder as punishment for their bounty program – they traded their first-rounder last year – chose a defensive tackle from Canada, Akiem Hicks of Regina.

The Raiders finished the round with Utah guard Tony Bergstrom.
