Matt McGuire Online http://mattmcguire.com Photography, blogging, social networking, technology Fri, 10 Jul 2009 21:55:05 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.8.4 en hourly 1 Stopping SPAM http://mattmcguire.com/stopping-spam-126.html http://mattmcguire.com/stopping-spam-126.html#comments Fri, 10 Jul 2009 21:55:05 +0000 Matt http://mattmcguire.com/?p=126 Wordpress has a great plugin called Akismet. It works very well for blocking spam. For some reason this site attracts a lot of spam. I have other Wordpress sites with far more traffic that get less spam. It’s odd, but either way Akismet keeps my filtering to a minimum. Here are the current stats for this month.

5,252 spams caught, 224 legitimate comments, and an overall accuracy rate of 99.580%.

I laugh at how stupid many spammers are. Not the guy that really is going around reading posts and commenting for the back link, it’s the other guys that make me laugh. The ones that act like they are following me for years and love my blog. I know these are normally bots, but still funny. Here is a good one I saw today:

It’s been quite sometime since I last visited this blog. Look like you have another great post entry again. lol. When are you going to stop posting good stuffs?

What are stuffs? At least have someone that speak English proofread your bot scripts. Good times!

Anyway I just upgraded Wordpress and all of my plugins. Wordpress is really getting easy to maintain.

Stupid Spammers http://mattmcguire.com/stupid-spammers-118.html http://mattmcguire.com/stupid-spammers-118.html#comments Mon, 16 Mar 2009 19:20:06 +0000 Matt http://mattmcguire.com/?p=118 Everyday I get spam comment posts on this and other blogs I run. Most of the comments are stopped by my spam filters and I never see them. The few that get past the filters are held in moderation. I manually review all comments. If you can’t even bother to mention something about my post I will not approve your comments. Do these spammers really think bloggers are that dumb? I get comments like this all the time.

“Where is the best place to learn about this? This is a good article, thanks” or
“Can you provide more information on this?” or
“You don’t deceive my expectation! Thank you for the post again.”

Do you really think you are going to fool me into thinking you are really commenting on my specific post. It’s always funny when I see the exact same comment on the same day on 3 or 4 of my blogs. Keep up the good work spammers, you give me something to laugh about.

Below is a matrix of 100 randomly generated words, I have already added a link to my blog to one of the random words. All you need to do is copy and paste the matrix into your blog and add your own link to one of the other vacant words, and then tell others to do exactly the same!

Promote Your Blog http://mattmcguire.com/promote-your-blog-98.html http://mattmcguire.com/promote-your-blog-98.html#comments Tue, 10 Feb 2009 22:16:10 +0000 Matt http://mattmcguire.com/?p=98 Commenting on tother people’s blogs is a great way to get backlinks if they do not add the nofollow tag.  Commenting on blogs in your niche even if they add the nofollow tags can be a good way to generate direct targeted traffic.

Michael over at theBloggerSource is putting on comment promotion.  Head on over and comment on his blog.  Tell people about your blog and why they should visit.  Maybe some people will actually do just that.

Backlinks Take Time http://mattmcguire.com/backlinks-take-time-94.html http://mattmcguire.com/backlinks-take-time-94.html#comments Mon, 09 Feb 2009 11:03:45 +0000 Matt http://mattmcguire.com/?p=94 Be patient with your backlink campaigns. I talk to people that get 5 one way backlinks and the following week they wonder where their traffic is. It just does not work that way. It takes dedication and time or a lot of money and time to benefit from getting good backlinks. Search engines will eventually find your link, but it might take months for them to find your link and give your site credit.

If you have a bunch of money to get started with a backlink campaign that it’s pretty easy. Just pay someone to get those links for you and wait a few months for the links to get indexed. If you are like me and have some time but you want to stay on a limited budget then you will need to work hard to get those link. First and foremost, content, content, content. The better your connect the more likely it is that someone will link to your site on their own.

Also try searching for dofollow and commentluv sites. In google include the industry you want to post about and the words dofollow and commentluv. This will help turn up blogs in your niche that allow dofollow links as well as good keyword links via commentluv. Just remember not to spam other sites. Also leave relevant posts. Don’t just say “Nice site”. You comment will probably never be approved or deleted. After each post you make on your blog try to go out and make at least one comment on a dofollo and commentluv site. In your niche is the best, but almost any site will do. Of course the more posts you make the better, but at least get in the habit of making one comment. Also try not to use the same sites.

This will take time. You might not realize any gains for 6 months or more. Hang in there it will pay off.
