KNOT ISLAND

2015-03-27T17:21:00.000-07:00

After a violent impact from the sky, a small peaceful piece of land was left fragmented. But a big “knot” will remain forever, maybe an untied truth of what happened or just a unity of what is left. The concept design behind this proposal, a memorial of a passenger flight that has been shot down from the ground where 298 lost their life.

Knot is an artificial Island full of meanings. It has been modelled to offer an interactive experience to visitors to remember and honour the people who died in this tragedy.

A ferry station offers the only access to the Island. Visitors who would like to experience the Island are taken directly to the memorial. Once arrived, they can either experience the interactive memorial installation or spend some quality time on an upper-level park.

The Island has gradually fragmented, and it's dissolving into smaller islands to recall the strong impact of the tragedy. Bridges link each island that has either green areas with trees or just be fully paved. Slanted columns randomly located are supporting the park structure above. The small islands are meant to be pleasant and relaxing spaces where visitors can spend some quality time on their own or with friends.

The biggest island accommodates the main feature, the “Knot” memorial. The memorial is a tangle and puzzling cube structure comprising 298 steel circular hollow section profiles of different sizes and lengths, each of them representing the victims of the flight. The profiles are all linked together forming a solid structure suspended above the atrium/ foyer where the visitors can experience their first breathtaking view of the intricate installation. The visitors can access the upper level, by a ramp system that is running around the atrium, and they can decide to go either to the upper-level park or the top of the memorial. A series of flights of stairs is taking the visitors to the top of the memorial through the intricate structure where they can experience the dizziness and distress of the passenger of the flight. At the top of the memorial, the visitors con rest on a peaceful landing.

Visitors can decide to continue their experience by spending some time in the upper-level park where they can relax, playing and chatting with friends. At the end of the upper-level park, a vertical connection takes the visitors down to the small islands. Walking through the bridges, the visitors are taken away from the core of the Island where a whole view of it can be better valued.

Knot wants to be an intense and lively space meant to remind to all of us all those passengers on the flight that died in such an undignified way, no matter the reason. But it also wants to be a space where people can enjoy and celebrate life.

LEAF

2013-05-25T16:37:00.000-07:00

LEAF is a metal coat, scarves and bag hanger part of the Monolitico collection, inspired in its shape by a tree leaf. In keeping with the unifying ethos of the Monolitico collection, it is shaped from a single metal sheet, with its sinuous contours forming hooks that are at once sturdy and organic, harmonious and functional. Designed to be screwed directly to the wall, the LEAF coat rack is ideal for hanging coats, clothes and bags, or even smaller accessory items such as scarves and jewellery.

COMB

2013-05-24T07:57:00.001-07:00

COMB is a coat rack of sturdy metal construction part of the Monolitico collection. The design is surprisingly obvious and simple; like many of the best designs, it combines a sense of logic with innovation, inspiring one to wonder why on earth they didn’t think of it themselves! Shaped from a rectangular metal sheet, the hooks are created by folding teeth, which are formed during the laser cutting process. The individual hooks are wide and rounded, thoughtfully designed to avoid undesirable creases to hanging clothes. Once screwed to the wall, the COMB coat rack coat is ready to hang anything.

SHELL

2013-05-24T07:55:00.000-07:00

SHELL is a metal shelving unit part of the Monolitico collection. Its concept is simple; a circular metal sheet is folded to 90 degrees to create the shelf support, which is then screwed to the wall. The metal sheet has been randomly perforated with holes of varying sizes, which adds a unique sense of elegance and lightness to its already appealing shape, and which may create a beguiling interplay between light and shadow. Perfect for small objects, keys and plants, SHELL can be fixed to the wall in two different configurations.

BENT

2013-05-24T07:52:00.000-07:00

BENT is a metal shelving unit part of the Monolitico collection. Its concept is beautifully simple; a rectangular metal sheet is folded to a 90 degree angle to create the shelf support, which is then screwed to the wall. This metal sheet is riddled with holes of varying sizes, which add a sense of lightness and texture, as well as creating interesting and enticing displays of light and shadow. BENT may be used as a solo piece to house objects and books; equally, it may be fitted in a group to create a vast and visually arresting wall mounted shelving display. BENT allows for even greater flexibility due to its potential to be fixed to the wall in two different configurations.

Monolitico - Sketches

2013-04-28T17:00:00.001-07:00

Monolitico Series is our latest furniture collection comprises hanger coats and shelves. The design consists in one piece of metal sheet simply bended or folded to create a practical object without frills, hence the name of this collection Monolitico (Monolithic in English). The idea was to rationalise the waste of material as well as show that with a simple concept we can achieve uniqueness.

Here the sketches in the next coming days I will post the photos.

Office Concept

2013-03-17T10:54:00.000-07:00

Office Concept, a publication for the commercial Architect and Design community in South-east Asia, wrote an editorial about Matteo Gerbi Limited and Ray Shelf.

Below you can find what they wrote:

Modern businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of the right furniture for their workspaces: not only do their choices project the company’s image and reflect its professionalism, but they can also have a bearing on the productivity and efficiency of its employees.

It almost goes without saying that ʻfirst impressions countʼ, and this is certainly true of the appearance of an office in gaining client confidence. Presentation of a workspace will affect how a client perceives the business and credibility is undoubtedly heightened by a streamlined, uncluttered environment – after all, if a business takes a messy, disorganized approach to its own surrounds, what does that say about how it will approach a client’s brief?

Productivity of employees is also a vital consideration in office design: every year, businesses lose large amounts of money due to ʻlostʼ working hours, caused by inefficiency and by physical and stress-related health issues. Including elements like ergonomic chairs, which optimize back health and help staff to sit comfortably at their desks, as well as spacious, durable work stations which hold all of the necessaries within easy reach, make work less stressful, more enjoyable, healthier and, ultimately, ensure better output.

Over the course of the last decade, there’s been ample evidence that design shows and manufacturers are responding to the needs of business by increasing their focus on and investment in innovative, practical and stylish product design. The variety of materials and new technology now available to designers constantly opens doors to more vibrant options and ideas, however, frequently, ʻinnovationʼ is limited to applying these new methods and materials to already existing products.

Matteo Gerbi, an Italian architect based in London, has his own idea of what constitutes innovative design is. “An innovative design is like an invention; its feature is not its shape or colour but its original way of working. If you want something innovative, you have to invent it.”

Matteo Gerbi has recently designed – or rather, invented - a contemporary shelving system named Ray Shelf, which absolutely reflects his original approach, with a design concept that is both beautifully simple and utterly unique. The standard boards, which traditionally form a shelf, are replaced by rows of metal bars, which are inserted between wall-mounted, perforated, steel bracket supports of various shapes and colours. Rather than limiting the appearance of the brackets, as is usually the case with shelving design, these supports are exposed and celebrated in the design, thus making them a feature of the shelving system.

Endlessly adaptable and versatile, Ray Shelf can be configured in whatever combination the user desires, to suit specific needs, spaces and aesthetic tastes – and the wide range of colours in which itʼs available makes it relevant to any environment. Businesses engaged in traditional pursuits like law or finance might aim for a classic, sophisticated look, in which the Oyster and Chestnut hues would harmonise beautifully. Businesses with a creative or contemporary thrust might instead opt for the vibrancy of a brightly primary and secondary coloured composition.

The myriad possible options for the installation of Ray Shelf also makes it relevant to any space, whether adding interest to the blank canvas of an office, forming a creative storage solution, or doubling as a fully interactive and customisable art installation for reception halls or boardrooms.

Crafted from metal, Ray Shelf is both sturdy and durable, yet has also been carefully designed to be incredibly lightweight. Itʼs also very easy to install, with holes on the back panel allowing the user simply to screw the support to the wall.

In terms of enhancing the image of a business, innovative designs like Ray Shelf can certainly play a part, as well as performing the more usual functions of storage, display and organization. Productive staff who enjoy their workspace and appreciative clients whose confidence is inspired by the credibility of your office: itʼs all in the detail.

Sketch. 2013

2013-02-28T03:24:00.001-08:00

I took part of the Sketch. 2013 an international exhibition organized by New York-based d3. Some of the sketches I did, were selected to be part of the exhibition.

Below the brief:

"Sketching is a fundamental and time-tested tool of design communication-- an intuitive practice that conveys ideas and assumptions rapidly and directly. With the rise of trans-disciplinary practices and digital methods, the conventional act of sketching has been profoundly transformed by a proliferation of diverse methodologies and emerging technologies. While the perception and notion of what constitutes a sketch continues to expand, many designers are reconsidering and expanding upon the historical role of sketching. This emerging dialogue reveals unparalleled synergies between 21st century innovation and classical tradition."

The exhibition is currently installed in the Fordham University Center Gallery on the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan.
The exhibition dates are as follows: February 21 - March 20, 2013
