Family Time…is there enough time?

In this podcast - we discuss ” Family Time”
We know moms out there - you can get very busy, Dad’s too! - so busy that you don’t have time to spend with your family?.

Sure you drive your kids here or there for sports, make them dinner, help them with their home work, tell them bedtime stories - but are you spending time with them talking, sharing thoughts-ideas, and having Mom and Dad together with the kids, “the family unit” - that is the best!!!

Judee and I both know during the week is very hard with everyone’s schedules, weekends are easier to have everyone get together - We have gotten so busy that we actually schedule family time - to do something together as a unit. Something we can all share and have fun as a family- just us, no friends of the boys or extended family. Bike ride, bar-b-que and cooking, planting, gardening, roller blading- seeing a cool movie- traveling together somewhere different.

We all know- holidays you get together, but it’s not the same- usually involves extended family and it’s not as focused on the unit and there really is the The Importance Of “Family Time”. With family time - It’s a great time to to build deeper relationships within your family.

Passing on family values in your children building a stronger family unit is essential now a days/ with so many distractions - tv, phone, computers- DS’s, games etc…

It’s important to take some time to laugh and be silly with your child. Laughing can help in hard times and difficult times. With the ever growing demands from school, jobs, and extracurricular activities, family fun can sometimes get lost or forgotten.

Judee and I have put together some tips we have used to help remind us to create more time with the family. Check out our Family Time Tips. We are not experts, but we wanted to share and talk about how just a little quality family time can be so important and rewarding!. On some level it says “I love you all” spending and sharing time with you!, is the best.

As both Moms of Triplets we know how difficult it is to co-ordinate “Family Time”. I know during the week is very hard, weekends are easier. That’s why we wanted to share our MOMS tips for “Family Time” with you!

I know in our own family we have gotten so busy that we actually schedule family time - to do something together as a unit. Something we can all share + have fun as a family- just us, no friends of the boys or extended family.

We are not experts, but we wanted to share and talk about how just a little quality family time can be so important and rewarding!

Avoid Overscheduling - Be realistic about family activities and commitments and avoid taking on too much. Running from activity to activity or being buried in too many commitments leaves no time for family time and having fun.

Try New Things - Add some spice to your family life and enjoy the family fun and adventure of trying new things. Sometimes all it takes is a change to the traditional habits and routines for families to learn to laugh again.

Learn from Other Families - Watch and learn how other families add family fun into their lives. Use their laughter as inspiration to create your own family fun.

Make it a Priority - Avoid the pitfalls of “too much work and no play” by making family fun and family time a priority.

Hope this inspires you! - to make your “Family Time” fun and part of your lives! - just a little quality family time can be so important and rewarding!

April 2010 - Multiple Birth Awareness month in the United States. Help create an awareness!

April marks the second annual Multiple Birth Awareness Month in the United States—a time to increase awareness about the issues facing families of multiple birth children and ways family, friends, professionals, and organizations can support them.Sponsored by the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs Inc., TWINS Magazine and Fetal Hope Foundation.

The most recent birth statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are from 2006. In that year, the twin birth rate was 137,085—more than twice the number reported for 1980 (68,339). Additionally, there were 6,118 triplets, 355 quadruplets and 67 quintuplets births in 2006. With an increase in multiple births comes an increased concern about the health and well being of those children, and the issues faced by their parents.

Multiple births in general are on the rise. With increased births, comes an increased concern regarding the health and well being of multiple birth children. (source CDC)

Bring and share awareness of this special Month with local support clubs, educators, medical professionals and media personnel across the country.

Save time and money, shop and sell at consignment sales. We are sharing our rebroadcast of episode number 7. Where we discuss how to sell and shop in consignment sales.

From developing a strategy for each sale [buying or selling] to what to do and be prepared for with all consignment sales. We discuss both aspects and benefits from selling to shopping in consignment sales. As both mom’s of Triplets plus being savvy shoppers, we have done our share of consignment sales.

Seasonal [Spring and Fall] consignment shopping has become a fast growing trend with baby and children’s items. Kids grow and change so fast, and items like clothes, strollers, car seats, baby cribs and toys seem barely even used.

In this podcast we talk with Anitra Graves director of the Sleep Disorder Center @ Northside Hospital. Anitra is a expert on the value and necessity of sleep. What is one of the down side’s to having babies all at once? Almost all bleary-eyed parents would agree that it is the lack of sleep. Any newborn is likely to keep odd hours, but balancing the demands of multiple newborns means that sleep is a scarce commodity.

We ask questions to Anitra Graves regarding newborns and sleep, different philosophies on sleep patterns, getting enough sleep for Moms and new parents, sleep apnea – which is a common condition with severe preemies. Plus other very important topics on sleep and disorders, sleep walking, parasomnia, non-rapid eye movement sleep and Lagophthalmos[sleeping with eyes open].

Of course! Getting your children to sleep through the night is a parents ultimate goal. Adequate sleep is especially important for new moms, since sleep deprivation can lead to postpartum depression. An extreme result of overtired, frustrated parents dealing with multiple crying babies.

Other effects of sleep deprivation are ::

• having trouble waking
• feeling groggy all day
• inability to concentrate
• nodding off at work or home
• mood problems, i.e. irritability, depression, anxiety

When you apply these symptoms to everyday life, you can see the serious effects of sleep deprivation. The stress felt by parents can affect their relationship with each other and with their children.

Anitra Graves gives great advice and knowledge to all parents, especially Moms in the podcast on how to get sleep when you can and get into a routine, plus stresses how important sleep is for everyone!

Here are a few Tips from Judee and Gillian on sleep and how to cope the first few months - When you get home. It’s not easy, that’s for sure - But above all, despite the difficulties, try to cherish this time. You’ll be amazed how quickly it passes!

Catch up on sleep whenever you can. Naps are a great way to catch up. Sleep on weekends and work out a system of shifts so both parents can take turns napping.

Try and keep supplies on each floor, diapers, blankets, clothes, wipes - so after feedings you don’t have to walk up and down and you can relax a little bit between and after the feeding routines. In this podcast we talk with Anitra Graves director of the Sleep Disorder Center @ Northside Hospital. Anitra is a expert on the value and necessity of sleep. What is one of the down side's to having babies all at once? Almost all bleary-eyed parents would agree that it is the lack of sleep. Any newborn is likely to keep odd hours, but balancing the demands of multiple newborns means that sleep is a scarce commodity.

We ask questions to Anitra Graves regarding newborns and sleep, different philosophies on sleep patterns, getting enough sleep for Moms and new parents, sleep apnea ndash; which is a common condition with severe preemies.

Other effects of sleep deprivation are ::

bull;nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;having trouble waking
bull;nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;feeling groggy all day
bull;nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;inability to concentrate
bull;nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;nodding off at work or home
bull;nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;mood problems, i.e. irritability, depression, anxiety

It's not easy, that's for sure - But above all, despite the difficulties, try to cherish this time. Yoursquo;ll be amazed how quickly it passes!

Catch up on sleep whenever you can. Naps are a great way to catch up. Sleep on weekends and work out a system of shifts so both parents can take turns napping.
Try and keep supplies on each floor, diapers, blankets, clothes, wipes - so after feedings you don't have to walk up and down and you can relax a little bit between and after the feeding routines. If possible, ask a friend or family member to come and watch your babies while you nap.
Change your diet. Starchy, heavy foods induce a drowsy feeling. Focus on lighter foods - fruit, vegetables and lighter carbs to feel more alert.Try not to exercise within three hours of bedtime.
For parents of multiples, take turns with the nighttime feedings. If possible, keep room temperature water and bottles pre-filled with formula powder at your bedside to reduce the number of trips to the kitchen.
Skip the chores. As hard as it is, try not to do household chores when Baby sleeps. When Baby naps, you should too.
