went to free Winsor & Newton demo at University Art, San Jose.

received free permanent sap green & cotman brush.

did some little pencil drawing of customers at local japanese bakery.

then redrew/painted her at home.

nice smooth color, interesting subtle variation in color. brush holds very fine sharp end

also, demo-ist (that a word) Christine Hanlon mentioned an interesting starter

triad to work with. and once I saw it, wham. immediately felt the color palette that i think in.

was funny as she was talking about it as if only good for drawing children's toys or something else artificial. nope, for me, is what i'd work in.

Hi there! You are invited to be a part of KALEID Gallery's Two Buck Tuesday event!

NO FEE NO COMMISSION !!!

Two Buck Tuesday is a monthly (3rd Tuesday of every month) $2 art sale and artist/quirky people get-together with music, live art, open sketching table, demos, performances, informal speakers and other artsy happenings! Those of you who have participated before are always welcome back!

-We're looking for artists who would like to come out and paint/create live. Set up your easel and let people see you at work! You'd be welcome to bring a small table to sell your artwork.
-We are especially interested in anyone who would like to do a demo especially something interactive. It would be okay to have a small fee if you help a person make something they can take home with them.
-We're also looking for performers-musicians, puppeteers, actors, comedians, jugglers, dancers, etc.

Darwin utilizes 35mm and large format cameras, primarily a Canon A-1 and Shen-Hao 4x5. His B&W photographs are silver gelatin prints produced using traditional darkroom methods. They are usually selenium toned.

The beauty of nature has always fascinated him. The emphasis of his landscape photography is to share the form, texture, and tones that nature has intermingled into such imaginative subjects and stories.

worth the wait

I've been patiently working with Pacific Art League and Silicon Valley Community Foundation to place art with the PAL community sites program into the SVCF San Mateo location. So when an opportunity came up, we all pulled together and made it happen.

Wow! it was worth the wait. Always amazes me how art takes on a different look depending on where it is shown. I create the scrolls in my small studio space, somewhere between refrigerator and dishwasher. Then they bloom in different ways depending on space and light.

This location has wide expansive wall with plenty of muted natural light. And is great to see how in the smaller room, they bring color to the place.

Thank you to Ric, Ann, Ed & Joy of PAL, and onsite Steve, also from PAL & of course to Lydia & Josiah of SVCF for working with us & appreciating the results.

I'm working to create some custom works just for this location, to swap out over the duration.

ok, so Gianfranco and I had our BETA test at San Jose street market, then a super mini tiny BETA at chocolate and coffee Pacific Art League, so finally ready for official rollout of Vignette for the night of 01SJ AbsoluteZERO, which I should make it clear, we were not part of, but thanks to Anno Domini gallery, we were able to enjoy the afternoon and evening (noon - midnight), in front of their gallery.

we should have been part of AbsoluteZERO, as being at the very end of the street, we were first line of question for everyone arriving, so we sent Craig (I think? thanks to you or whoever) to get us a pile of the hard to find maps, which we then handed out.

here, in the order as the half day unfolded, are our Vignettes. if you are one of the ones in the photos, we hope you enjoy your art. we had much fun meeting all of you and making these.

Moose waited and waited and waited for her friends. They never came. Then she waited. So we got to know her, talked about art, you don't need to go to art school to be an artist, just do it. If your Grandfather is famous photographer, learn from him. Next day we learned from the friends Moose was waiting for that we know them, Kate & Eric.

We don't mind if you wander off as we take as long as we take to finish. These 3 friends we thought were gone for good. Came back way later. 6 paintings that are built into found and constructed frames - such that the frame and art are one

wanted frames for the art, to take them beyond just little pieces of paper, but did NOT want to use real frames. the good ones are too expensive $100 more on what is at most $10 art and the cheap ones are.... cheap crap

these frames are from egg crates, cut up orange crate boxes

and THEN went more 3D, with plastic food containers which had clear plastic covers

initially intended to just have the painting inside, however, as began to discover the possibilities of the actual container, painting on sides, hanging ribbon, paint on the inside of the front, further brought to life, as gave sense of space, object

final touch was ribbon and hanging on the wall - I could see what they could become, kind of thing seen in a home, perhaps embroidered with sayings - samplers

only 6 of these, i'll do more as these are exciting
$2 each

and yes, I do realize I started this out with a sort of self conscious parody that might only be funny to me of artist interviews - I did NOT intend to diminish Two Buck Tuesday, just to be a bit silly

as for the vitrine - yeah, snarking on something, went to WAY too many museum and upper end gallery shows where the art was in a "vitrine", which is just basically a glass case

new scroll paintings at Caffe Trieste: we are the neurons in what we are creating

Caffe Trieste presents new scroll paintings by Matthew Bailey Seigel.

WHAT IS HAPPENING? We were growing fruits and nuts. Now the valley is growing something else. On the surface it seems to be tech: WWW, email, VoIP, Facebook, Twitter, iPad... But what is it really? If we are the neurons, then connections are being made at a furious rate. We've gone from nothing to what? Fast. Bad? Good? Does overhauling the entire eco system of the earth matter? Or should we bask in the glorious wonder of our part in creating and BEING part of a new biological entity?

These are the questions behind Matthew's current scroll paintings. Which are a reinvention of Japanese tatemono (standing scrolls) in modern materials. Introduced to Japan during the Heian Period (794 to 1185), hung scrolls were "primarily for displaying Buddhist images for religious veneration, or as a vehicle to display calligraphy or poetry." With Matthew's scrolls, they are more messages discerning inter-connectivity and interactivity.

This event is part of the South First Fridays art walk in downtown San Jose.

Alex Katz is one of those artists who have enjoyed tremendous commercial and museum success but whose art historical importance remains an open question.

Oh, OK, so it is no longer enough to get into a gallery, you need to get into a museum, ohh, woops, that is not good enough, you need to have historical importance.

He is not a bad painter, just not original enough — or even good enough — to suggest that his will be a lasting contribution to American art.

Gary Coleman, oil and pastel painter, will explore artistic priorities. LIKE: Does painting to sell have to mean selling out? If it does (just a little), does the artist hoard his/her own work? Is it selling out to paint for recognition and respect? Is fun more fun than suffering? Is it necessary to continue to “build a body of work”, or is it OK to move on to something else when the body seems to be getting old? Gary will show some of his own work to illustrate his own decisions. He is over 70 years old, and so you should listen to and respect his wisdom.

She likes to experiment with a fusion of dance forms, including gothic, tribal, East Indian, and Burlesque. At Kaleid, she’ll be performing the standard Cabaret style bellydance taught to her by her Mother (who was a bellydancer in the 1970s).

M.P. Nothing, you may know him as Mo from barefoot coffee, now you will also know him for his graffiti & graphic novel inspired art, and perhaps his friend Jeff will attend as well.

Emonic's artwork has been featured all throughout the west coast in various shows and events. He currently works as freelance illustrator in addition to working on his own personal projects. You can see his work at www.emonic.net

Chemix is relatively new to the art world; while he has focused mostly on collaborating on projects and managing his brother Emonic for the last 3 1/2 years, he has only recently started his foray in actively creating work and hopes to expand and learn along the way.

Chuck Hepburn, descended from Mary, Queen of Scots, and yes, related to (and met) Katherine Hepburn. He was physicist on the Mars lander mission. And he opened for Beck in Las Vegas. However for us, he will be modeling for the sketch artists, dressed as a cowboy, playing guitar! as he too is a professional model!

Also ALL artists are invited to bring their art supplies, and take a place at the sketch table! Space is first come first serve.

Keith Bunnell will demonstrate his ceramics all evening in front of Kaleid. He has been throwing for almost 5 years now and is currently going to Foothill college to get his major in art. He mostly does Raku firing but he has been experimenting with Soda firing as well.
