What's going on inside the studio in January?

Had a studio visit by a gallery. They like my work as well as my photography. I think things may work out. Fingers crossed!

I've been working on several series that I began back in 2010 and 2011

Brown series (2010 - present)
Black and other colors on paper (2011 - present)

Running out of space and getting more and more ideas which becomes paintings.

Trying to take photographs of work from 2011 and now ... I really could use some lighting for that!

I am quickly running out of room in my studio. Trying to work 'big' isn't the easiest of tasks when you have limited space. So, sometimes bigger pieces end up tacked on a wall (if there's room!) or rolled up.

The working title of this series is: California. I began them in Sept. during my residency at The Art Students League of New York at Vytlacil.

This piece hangin' on the wall was begun at the end of my stay ... it took a couple before I finished it. Of course, it has to be stretched.

Museum Day in Munich

A short trip to Munich to see Ellsworth Kelly, black & white at Haus der Kunst, which was awesome. Unfortunately, I couldn't take any pics. Just click on the link above. This was the highlight of our day spent at the museums.

Our first stop was Museum Brandhorst. No photos allowed! A very beautiful and wonderful building. The space is huge, yet sucks you in. Tons of Cy Twombly and way too much Warhol for my taste.

Making a Geometric Painting and Changes

It always starts with some kind of idea or vision of what you intend. Then it's the blank canvas or paper. Tools. Tools are important and there are many as you can see. Then you begin. Once it takes shape, you may find you have to make changes. After making changes, it sometimes works. It worked here.

Art Basel Miami is in full swing. Read Michael Corbin's (aka The Artbook Guy) review and his essay titled The Idle Art Dealer. He makes a great point in this essay.

In the Studio

Just over a week ago I was able to spend many hours in the studio. I made a postcard size piece called Somewhere in California ( from the California series I started in Sept.) for the upcoming show: Postcards from the Edge . A Benefit for Visual AIDS - Hosted by Cheim & Read, 547 W 25th St, New York. It's my third year doing this.

An Opinion or Two

It's been a little while since I've posted something.

This post is about thoughts and maybe an opinion or two.

Why did Andreas Gursky’s Rhine II photo sell for so damn much money? It is simply insane! Gursky of course is certainly well known with a long list of exhibitions and purchases. However, this photo isn't really anything special other than the name attached to it.

Keep in mind that there are many crooks out there in the art world just waiting to take you for a ride until your wallet is empty. I'd say most artists want to show their work, sell their work and gain some kind of recognition. Beware of those that play on your "dream" to make it. This includes the absolutely ridiculously high entrance fees and, believe it or not, fees to 'review your portfolio'. The art world is a fucked up place filled with both good and bad.

What is an artist residency? It is NOT a school. An artist residency gives the artist somewhere to live, sometimes some to money for materials, and a studio to work in for a set period of time WITHOUT the "real world" distractions e.g. your job, etc.

In this digital world it seems anyone that has a camera is a photographer. Snap shots are just snap shots in my opinion. Not every photograph you take is a piece of art. Sure, it's subjective, but come on ... there's much more to it. At least learn some basics such as composition for example. Jeez!

Opportunities sometimes come your way. When one comes your way, take advantage!

"The Vytlacil Campus Artist-in-Residence Program (Vyt AIR) provides an environment that frees artists from the routine of daily life and allows them to truly focus on their art for an extended period of time." I can attest to this statement. I spent Sept. 2011, my second stay at Vyt, doing just what this statements says.

Time goes by so quickly... My residency is already over. Es ist schon vorbei! I'm back in Germany now and will soon be forced into the routine of "real" daily life. Asi es la vida ...

A few things:

I was very focused - both with painting and photography.

I made some really good work.

I actually painted outside the lines, which was no small feat!

I was lucky to have had incredibly nice, good and talented co-residents.

I had a dream studio.

I was able to spend time with my friend Ellen Fisch who introduced me to the great LIFE photographer Bill Ray. A true privilege to spend time with Bill.

I saw the de Kooning: A Retrospective at MoMA.

I met Brice Marden at DIA in Beacon.

I am once again motivated.

So, thank you to everyone at Vyt!

Residency Trip to Dia in Beacon, NY & Brice Marden

We all went to visit Dia in Beacon, NY on Sunday. It was a nice and enjoyable day. This late Sept. trip brought us views of the early but wonderfully colorful fall foliage. Pleasing to the eye.

Dia is a HUGE dream space with natural light illuminating the art. I particularly liked the Agnus Martin and Richard Serra exhibits as well as Gerhard Richter's Six Gray Mirrors.

The highlight though was meeting Brice Marden, who just happened to be there. What a treat for me!

The Open Studio Evening at the Residency

The open studio evening was very nice, and even though it was raining, many people showed up. Thanks to all of them!

The Central Coast of California - Ocean and Farms = a painting

Growing up in, at the time, a small town in a valley surround by farms located on the Central Coast of California, helped to shape me into who I am and how I see things.
