Noctilucent Clouds and the Moon

According to the news there was an excellent chance to spot some very rare noctilucent clouds this week. These high altitude clouds are illuminated by the sun as it sets below the horizon. I have no idea if these clouds are noctilucent or not but armed with the camera manual and a tripod I had fun experimenting taking pictures that would have totally defeated my old compact.

Oat Houses at Sissinghurst

I have visited Sissinghurst gardens many times before and always enjoyed taking pictures of the garden. Along with the famous tower there are a large number of Kent farm buildings preserved by the National Trust. It is particularly unusual to have circular and square roundels next to each other.

Bluebells and Orchids at Yockletts Bank

The Kent Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve at Yockletts Bank is one of the best places in Kent to see rare orchids. Just north east of Ashford the site is tricky to find and park near and pretty muddy on the damp May day we went. Not being orchid experts I’m having great trouble identifying which varieties we found. There is definitely at least three different types but what they are is very much uncertain!

Orchids at Marden Meadows

The Marden Meadows nature reserve near Staplehurst in Kent is a great example of an unimproved hay meadow. The ground is literally covered in thousands of these stunning Green Winged Orchids.

Harrietsham Beech Walk

Reculver Church Tower

A Roman fort was built on this site to guard the channel that separated the Isle of Thanet from the rest of Kent. Most of the fort has been lost to the sea along with much of the churchyard. What remains of the church is quite impressive with views over the Thames side marshes.
