We discovered a beautiful new place at the Schlei today, an inlet close to the ferry in Missunde. Water birds, coo coos and even one (maybe two) sea eagle welcomed us at this totally calm place when we were stepping out of the hilly forest. Our plan: Come back with a canoe and explore the inlet one day in summer.

At this time of the year the fields around the Schlei are usually as yellow as these ones. This year it has been a bit harder to find a view like this one. There are noticeably less rapeseed fields. The farmers say that last year’s August and September were too humid to get the seeds out.

So, there is still hope for a yellow May 2013.

Hoping to see the rise of this year’s biggest full moon, we stopped at a parking place right at the Schlei – with picnic and all. A layer of clouds covered the sky precisely where the moon was rising, so we didn’t see much more than a light glow.

Luckily, this point is also the part of the Schlei where the “Wappen von Schleswig” has it’s turn-around point on it’s trips between Schleswig and the bridge in Lindaunis. So in the end I didn’t have to leave with an empty SD-Card.

In the last light of the day we saw a swan floating in the water in front of one of Schleswigs most hideous landmarks, the Wiking tower. I knew when making a photo series about the Schlei some day I had to include it… well here it is.

I prefer the reflection of the tower in the water.

The Füsinger Au is a small river that runs through the Angeln area northeast of Schleswig. In Winning it flows into the Schlei. For centuries the river could be crossed with a small ferry close to the mouth, the Dreilingsfähre. Today the ferry is gone, replaced by a bridge, which was refurbished not long ago.

It has been an extremely busy (holiday) week, so I didn’t have the chance to take a photo of the Schlei. As this was expected I took this photo in advance the week before. This is the view from the small town of Sieseby across the Schlei.

Happy Easter to everyone! Yesterday was the day for the traditional Osterfeuer (Easter fires). Almost every town has it’s own fire where old Christmas trees and branches are burned to scare away winter (and that’s about time – last night we had -2° Celsius!). This is the fire here in Schleswig, and if you look closely you can see two other fires along the coast.

One of the little boats the fishers use here on the Schlei. This was late afternoon, when the fishers take their deserved rest. In the mornings the Schlei is much more active these days – the season for herring just started!

Moon, Venus and Jupiter were giving a nice show this week. Driving from Flensburg to Schleswig around sunset Van noticed that they had again appeared in the beautifully blue sky. So we continued right away to Winningmay, one of our favorite Schlei spots around Schleswig. It was freezingly cold but I could take some few photos in the last available light and quickly jump back into the car.

Today was totally grey and dull. But I didn’t have a photo for this week yet, so I had to make the best of it. Grey, dark, windy: Perfect ingredients for a black and white long exposure. So that’s what I did.
