“It becomes increasingly easy, as you get older, to drown in nostalgia.” – Ted Koppel

The word "nostalgia" is a Greek derivation of two root words: "nostos" that means to "return home” or “go back to one's local land" and "algos" referring to "pain, suffering, or grief". Johannes Hofer first mentioned this condition in 1688. Today, we think of it as desire to return to a former time in our life or to our home or homeland (or home sickness).

MATTRIXX Tip: Nostalgia has been exploited by clever marketing and advertising professionals (as well as highly successful leaders) for as long as there has been a need to “Get What We Want Without Negotiating”.

Nostalgia is a very effective trigger of influence because it focuses on our inner feelings and emotions. "People seek pleasure", wrote Aristotle, "and they seek to avoid pain." We find pleasure in nostalgia because it allows us to mentally relive our past feelings of friendships, status, safety, security, freedom, or love.

Ironically, when people become nostalgic, they typically become happier. This allows us to increase sales conversion rates or more easily motivate and persuade others. For example, President Ronald Reagan was a master of applying nostalgia as an emotional trigger within his speeches, and his ability to move people to action was legendary.

Studies indicate that when people are asked to think back on experiences, objects, or songs from the past, their positive feelings increase. In some cases, nostalgia can also be bittersweet since our feelings of happiness can be mixed with feelings of sadness or loss. However, in most cases, the net result is positive. In short, nostalgia simply makes people happy ... and nostalgic people are more receptive to subliminal influence and persuasive presentation techniques.

Amazingly, people have a tendency to view the past as certain and safe. Even younger generations of people who have not lived through a specific time period are prone to becoming nostalgic about it. This helps explain the popularity of television shows such as Antiques Roadshow, the craze in collecting Barbie Dolls, and the American auto maker’s retro versions of the Ford Mustang, the Chevy Camaro, and the Dodge Charger. There’s even a re-rebirth of the VW Beetle!

While research is trying to understand the neurological causes of nostalgia, social psychology studies show that nostalgic triggers can create favorable attitudes about many products and services. As we age, we appear to become more receptive to the use of what researchers call "a longing for positive memories from the past." Using the trigger of nostalgia to associate positive feelings with your product or service also increases the effectiveness of other subliminal triggers including scarcity, association, reciprocity, and contrast.

MATTRIXX Tip: Time tends to smooth out and erase the bad while enhancing and magnifying the good. When developing an advertising campaign or a sales presentation, make sure the nostalgic triggers you plan to use fit the demographics of your target market while avoiding any real or perceived negative connotations.

For marketing professionals, the key is to find the right music and images that have a way of relating to their specific products or services. For leaders and sales professionals, past memories provide the context for nostalgic feelings, and you can use them to guide people’s decision making process. It is the emotion generated from nostalgia that will influence people's perception of your item(s) or leadership style.

MATTRIXX Tip: When used correctly, nostalgia can also make us feel younger (at least for a short period of time) because it can compress time within our mind ... we feel young when we recall pleasant memories. When we “relive” our nostalgic memories, they become mental images. This is an extremely powerful trigger when you know how to use it. As I tell my clients, “The soul never stirs without first creating a mental picture!”

Case in Point: "Valentine's Day" - Our memories become especially potent during holidays like Valentine's Day. Cards, flowers, and candy are powerful triggers that allow us to recall past experiences. Through annual rituals, we play mental tricks on ourselves ... and when the ritual works, we feel happy combining past memories with a new pleasant experience.

In today's environment of a troubled economy, global unrest, and an aging population base, conjuring up past experiences that engender hope is a great strategy to produce your desired outcome. A nostalgic approach might just help your employees or clients see a clearer vision of what you have to offer.

MATTRIXX Tip: It reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw on an old pick-up truck in Montana - “It's hard to be nostalgic when you can't remember anything.”

Oh, how we long for the “Good Old Days” when our lives were simpler, our neighborhoods were safer, and we felt more secure. Yes, nostalgia really kicks-in when we listen to our favorite old songs while sitting in a retro-style diner, eating a good old juicy hamburger with hot crispy French fries on the side, while sipping on an old fashioned chocolate milk shake or cherry coke … complete with hot-rods, hard-tails, and muscle cars cruising around the parking lot!

If you want to increase your ability to influence others; if you want to make your advertising and marketing campaigns double or triple in ROI; if you want to boost your sales closure rates, or if you want to become a motivational and persuasive leader, begin using “nostalgia triggers”. You will be amazed at the results … and how good it makes others feel!

Remember my tag-line? "It's Not What You Know or What You Say That Counts ... It's What People REMEMBER You Said and How You Made Them FEEL!"™

It doesn't get any easier to understand than that!

I welcome your comments or stories about how you utilize nostalgic triggers within your leadership, sales, or marketing process. And thanks for sharing this article with your friends and colleagues.

“People seem to get nostalgic about a lot of things they weren't so crazy about the first time around.” – Unknown

******************************************

Matt Rixx is President and Founder of The MATTRIXX Institute of Subliminal Influence and Persuasion, a company created to help those whose careers depend on their powers of influence, motivation, and adaptive persuasion. Using his MATTRIXX Method, his clients have been able to increase sales closure rates by up to 85%, expand new client acquisitions by over 350%, and boost revenues by over 200%.
<![endif]-->
This was a recent question posed within a LinkedIn discussion group. More specifically, pastor and author, James Barr posted, "Lust! A Problem in the Church or Not?

After rethinking his question it in terms of psychological and subliminal triggers, we know people lust over or about many things - one of which is sexual in nature. I do agree that those who succumb to lust, be it money, possessions, or sex, have a deeper seated problem - many times due to psychological triggers, one of which is low self-esteem.

From a scientific point of view, sexual lust is based on genetic/reproductive drives ... responses to chemical, auditory and visual stimuli, and to sociological conditioning. Be that as it may, it also seems (in general) that the more powerful a person becomes, the greater the opportunity to become "self indulgent". How many times have we witnessed this type of behavior? From presidents, corporate moguls, Hollywood celebrities, to wall street billionaires.

Many powerful people begin to believe it is their 'right" to partake from the forbidden fruit - whether it is sex, money, or possessions. How else can you explain the downfall of some extremely successful business people and highly famous faith based leaders and (mind you - I did not say ALL, just SOME).

When you're weak; when you're arrogant; when you allow yourself to take advantage of those who will offer themselves to you because of your power and possessions - then the trap snaps shut and you become a victim of your own devices.

Lust is a darker side of humanity, but that doesn't excuse the sin!

Anyone can sin ... but as I remind my clients, you can't make the same mistake twice. The first time it might be a mistake, but the second time it is a conscious, albeit, stupid decision. Fool me once, shame on you ... fool me twice - I'll remove you from my social circles and my life!

Lust is like watching a train wreak - even though it's a disaster, and even though we know someone will get hurt, it's just impossible not to watch it when it happens.

But then - maybe it's just me! What do you think? Give me your thoughts and comments

Thanks for tuning in and reading - and for sharing it with your social groups!

Heard at a recent political strategy workshop ... "Just because we've always done it this way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid!"

How would you like to alienate your audience and virtually guarantee a continued decline in potential bookings as a paid speaker? Want to be thought of as Mother Nature's narcoleptic answer to mass insomnia? Does your audience sigh a breath of relief after you utter the words, " ... and in conclusion..."?

Although I often poke fun at this subject, when you find yourself a victim/hostage of a poor speaker, it is hard to find anything humorous about the situation. How many BORING presentations have you experienced within the last year? If you are like most people, the answer is "way too many"!

Unfortunately, we do not have a designated Darwin Award for speakers who "die" on stage, and meeting planners have yet to use "stage hooks" to quickly remove boring speakers from the platform (much to the chagrin of many afflicted audience members). Oh, how some of us speech hostages long for the good old days of the proverbial tar-and-feather party!

Let me give you a recent example. During one particularly tedious and highly left-brained speech I had the misfortune of attending, the mono-toned speaker paused about eight minutes into his speech, peered into his audience, and light-heartedly commented, "I know this information is very technical in nature ... I hope I'm not boring any of you."

Came a quick reply from one of the back tables, "Not a problem. We stopped listening several minutes ago."

Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on slick marketing campaigns, sales training courses, executive speaking workshops, and so-called “leadership development” seminars, most people still don’t understand how to utilize the incredible power of subliminal influence triggers and persuasive presentation techniques. The result is poorly delivered presentations to semi-comatose audiences!

When it comes to keynote speeches and presentation skills (or lack thereof), here are my Top 10 Presentation "Pet Peeves":

10. Death by PowerPoint

  9. Hacking other people's material and/or ideas and using them as their own

  8. Boring lecture or mono-toned presentation styles

  7. READING from notes (or worse, reading directly from PPT slides)

  6. Trying to "wing it" without proper preparation and practice

  5. Going over the allotted speaking time

  4. Beginning and/or ending the speech with a lame or poorly told joke

  3. Blatantly "SELLING" from the platform

  2. Talking down to the audience

  1. Starting off with "I'm not really a good speaker".

MATTRIXX Tip: If you are a mediocre to poor speaker, there's no need to warn an audience about your lack of talent - so never start a speech with an apology. If you are not speaking at a professional level, it will quickly become apparent within the first 90-seconds of your speech! There's no real sense in warning them! The real fun is letting them find out for themselves!!!

Every day we face the challenge of getting others to do what we want. To accomplish this, the single most important skill-set we can develop involves influence and persuasion triggers that enhance our ability to influence others. When used properly, these triggers increase the chances of people saying “YES” to our requests or agreeing with our view point.

MATTRIXX Tip: In a rush to create cross-functional teams, social networks, blogs, and inter-company partnerships, those who master the art of persuasion exert far greater influence than formal power structures.

When it comes to sales, marketing, and leadership skills, I tell my clients, "It's Not What You Know or What You Say That Counts ... It's What People REMEMBER You Said and How You Made Them FEEL!"

No matter how big or insurmountable your problems seem right now - just remember, you've probably only seen the tip of the iceberg. - Unknown

******************************************

Matt Rixx is President and Founder of The MATTRIXX Institute of Subliminal Influence and Persuasion, an Albuquerque and Scottsdale based company created to help those whose careers depend on their powers of influence, motivation, and adaptive persuasion. Using his MATTRIXX Method, his clients have been able to increase sales closure rates by up to 85%, expand new client acquisitions by over 350%, and boost revenues by over 200%.

P.S. (But SHOULD)?

Many, many years ago I was working in a comedy club in Austin, TX. (my third real gig as a paid comedian). A man walks up to me, introduces himself as David Jennings, and tells me he’s a talent agent out of LA. At the time I didn't realize he was a legend when it came to finding and developing stand-up comic talent.

David said, “I’ve been in Dallas scouting new talent, and I’m heading home tomorrow. Just thought I’d drop in on my way back to see the talent, hear their routines, and say 'hi' to Gary." (Gary was the owner of the comedy club).

David sticks out his arm, shakes my hand and says, “I saw your show tonight. You know you’ve got some funny bits ... made me laugh. Matt, you could be really good … but right now ... you’re not.”

I stood there in shocked silence! As Mark Twain said, "Repartee is something we think of twenty-four hours too late."

He continued, “Matt, I think you have a lot of potential. I don't do this very often, but here’s my offer. Come out to LA and spend some serious time with my stable of comics. They’ll take you under their wings. Learn everything you can from them, and in a couple of months let’s see what happens.”

That was some of the “hardest" living conditions I ever experienced; seven fellow comedians "camping out" in a two bedroom apartment. But the education and training I received during that time was priceless – much more valuable than anything I gained through my college degrees. I was introduced to incredible platform techniques and tightly held performance secrets known to (and still coveted by) a select group of stand-up comedians and live-stage entertainers.

I also learned this; the true masters of crowd control, the world’s best “real time” leaders, the greatest motivators and sales experts are stand-up comedians. They don’t just tell funny stories, they are Master Story-Sellers - experts in crowd control and group persuasion. Those lessons served me well because, for the next 9 1/2 years, I traveled all over the U.S. as a stand-up comedian and live stage entertainer.

Now, let's fast forward to just a few years ago. Several research papers and books were published describing subliminal triggers of persuasion and covert methods to influence others. The authors outlined WHAT the triggers were, but they failed to share the most valuable pieces of the equation; namely, WHY these triggers work and specifically how to use them. But MOST IMPORTANT, how to combine them to get a desired affect ... how to use them to “Get to YES ... Without Negotiating”.

In comedy, you learn “if you want the crowd to respond in this manner … use this technique” or "if you want them feel this particular emotion, use this strategy and build your premise using this method”. I began to see them as a series of "emotional response" formulas or recipes. It was as simple as baking a cake. A set of performance techniques to create measured and specific audience reactions!

The social psychologists described what subliminal triggers were – but it was my comedy and live-stage training that allowed me to fully understand why these triggers and techniques work. More specifically, what to do and how to combine them to achieve the desired result.

And here's the bonus – these subliminal triggers and techniques are cross-cultural and universal. They work in the U.S. and in Europe; they work in Asia, Australia, and along the Pacific Rim. If a social culture enjoys and values stories, these triggers will work.

PLUS - they work on the Matures (born before 1946), on Baby Boomers, on Gen X’ers, and with a few tweeks, even on Gen Y’ers.

What do comedians know about leadership and sales that you don't ... but SHOULD? The secret is not about getting people to take an action … it's about getting people to believe the action you want them to take is their own idea!

The secret is subliminal triggers of influence combined with persuasive presentation techniques. Once you master them, you will never look at leadership, sales, or public speaking in the same light.

You will wonder how you ever survived without them!

"I realized that talent would get me as far as middle management, but beyond that point it would become a matter of politics and currying favor with bosses." - Masahiro Origuchi

Office politics can either be seen as a positive or a negative within the work place, and it all comes down to human communications and building relationships to get things done. Taken from the viewpoint of a leader, it is about dealing with your persuasive abilities ... as well as the abilities of those around you.

If you want be a highly successful leader, you need to know how to control office politics and influence people's emotions and decision making processes. Within an office environment, the only people who seem to complain about the politics are the self-proclaimed victims, and as we know, few things can be as dangerous as disenfranchised employees.

MATTRIXX Tip: Funny how those who are adept at playing within the political sand-box rarely grumble when they believe they are in control and things appear to be going their way.

It reminds me of the story about the husband and wife sitting by a cozy fire. Between them lay their cat and dog, sleeping peacefully next to each other. "Now, just look at them," the husband remarked, "see how they get along together? Why can't we do that?"

"That's a sweet thought," replied the wife, "but just tie them together by their tails and see what happens."

In an office environment, we are "tied" together, and things will go much smoother for everyone if all of us are heading in the same direction and trying the reach the same set of goals. The direction setter is the leader [YOU], and you need to have the ability to control the political atmosphere within your organization!

It's important to understand that organizational leaders fall into two basic types; those who lead by intimidation and coercion, and those who lead by influence and subliminal persuasion. The former become intolerable … the latter become inspirational (and unforgettable).

Furthermore, poor leaders will quietly foster disruptive practices such as office politics, allowing them to become deeply entrenched within the organization. This is analogous to the current “divide and conquer” strategies used so successfully by elected (and appointed) political figures and political action committees (PACs).

MATTRIXX Tip: Great leaders take control of office politics and quickly disarm or neutralize the disruptive political players. This becomes much easier if leaders [YOU] fully understand the concepts of subliminal influence triggers and why strategic aspects of social persuasion can be so effective within the workplace.

You can create a positive chain-reaction throughout your organization by the use of these techniques, especially the triggers of:

Association (liking products, services, and ideas that are endorsed by people we like and respect),

Conformity (viewing a behavior as correct when we see others performing it), and

Reciprocity (the urge to return a favor when someone “gives” us something)

In the end, the primary goal of great leaders is to identify and develop additional leaders, and to ensure everyone understands and supports the key objectives and mission of YOUR vision for the organization.

MATTRIXX Tip: Don't hate the game of politics; it is here to stay, so play it to win ... but remember to stay within the rules of decency and fair play. If you don't know how to play, you need to learn - and QUICK. The more relationships you nurture at work, the more you can accomplish.

As a keynote speaker and sales/leadership coach, I frequently ask my audience and clients this question; "As a leader, which of these two results is more important?

Getting people to take an action, or

Getting people to believe the action you want them to take is their own idea?

The first is easy; however, the second takes knowledge, practice, and a thorough understanding of influence triggers and subliminal persuasion techniques. Or as my closest Japanese friend and colleague, Hiroshi Karaki, continually reminds me, “Matt-san, remember, fish never see hook … only see worm!" Great ideas can rarely be simpler than this.

I'd like to know some of the office political nightmares YOU'VE experienced ... so send me a comment!

I've learned that position can be bought, but respect must be earned - Unknown

People want to hear a great message ... an educational and spiritual message ... one that is UPLIFTING, eye-opening, one that makes them FEEL something, and is UNFORGETTABLE! At the end of the service, people want to walk out with a message (maybe your message) burning in their hearts! It has to strike an emotional trigger with them to make a lasting impression.

If you don't know the techniques and secrets to creating and delivering a heart-felt message; if you have never learned the platform techniques to make your message "come alive", then you should reconsider your current set of speaking skills. And don't think individuals "magically acquire" these skills just because they were "called" to be a faith-based leader.

Another news flash - inspirational leadership/speaking skills are not guaranteed to pass down to the next generation. For example, look at several well known powerhouse ministries (Graham, Schuller, or Hagee) and compare the motivational and persuasive success of the father to the "Next Generation" offspring. Bloodlines are not a promise of innate inspirational speaking and persuasive leadership abilities - although every once in while a "preacher's child" will eclipse the parent. But like an eclipse, this is a rare and wondrous occasion!

Here's the $1 million secret to becoming highly successful in your ministry: "It's Not What You Know or What You Say That Counts ... It's What People REMEMBER You Said and How You Made Them FEEL!"

If your ministry isn't growing, or if you are giving your sermon to rows of empty seats, then perhaps some meditative contemplation about the style and content of your message is in order. But on the bright side - the best orators, speakers, and religious leaders developed their skill and style through trial and error, and the use of mentors!

Giving sermons is a lot like trying to tell jokes ... some can tell 'em, many cain't, but that don't stop 'em from trying. And just like comedy, lots of practice and instruction from mentors can make the journey more enjoyable and much more fruitful!

And May God Bless Your Message!

As a keynote speaker and corporate trainer/coach specializing in leadership communications and Story-Selling techniques, this is what I share with my audience and clients.

(1) On Leaders: There are two basic types of leaders; those who lead by intimidation and those who lead by motivation. The former become intolerable, the latter become inspirational.(tm)

(2) On Leadership: Leadership is not about getting people to take an action … it is about getting them to believe the action you want them to take is their own idea! (tm)

Great leaders must know how to use humor to get their ideas across and to create instant trust and rapport with others. For example, compare Clinton and Reagan versus Obama. Clinton and Reagan could tell a good story and make people laugh while making their point ... Obama has to inform the press and viewers he just told a joke ... and they still don't laugh.

A fitting (and telling) contrast of leaders and leadership abilities!

Fact #1 - Normally, questions are used to help extract useful information from others – but shaping questions will help people create connections between concepts or ideas.

As Kevin Hogan Ph.D., a leader in the field of social psychology explains, “Shaping is asking a question in such a way as to shape or highly influence the answer – immediate input to get an immediate and influenced response.”

MATTRIXX Tip: Shaping provides a process that allows you to subliminally introduce an idea into a person’s subconscious … an idea they will eventually come to think of as their own … all through using questions!

Shaping can increase awareness of specific issues, it can aid in the thinking process, and it can force a person to explore deeper levels of understanding about a particular subject. When we understand how the brain processes and stores memory, we gain an insight into certain forms of instantaneous subconscious memory formation, such as in certain types of Déjà Vu (more to come on what Déjà Vu teaches us about subliminal memory formation in future newsletters). With this knowledge, leaders and sales groups can use this information to make their presentations much more effective, memorable, and amazingly persuasive.

Fact #2 - There are many ways to construct a question; in fact, there are five distinct categories of questions that can be utilized in the shaping process. The five are Factual, Convergent, Divergent, Evaluative, and Combination. For example, a divergent question is a question with no specific answer, so it forces a person to explore different scenarios and outcomes at virtually the same time.

MATTRIXX Tip: Divergent questions are VERY effective if you supply key information to the listener prior to posing the divergent question. This is because of two related factors. (1) People make their decisions emotionally when the answer to a question isn’t obvious, and (2) People rationalize their emotional decisions instead of making rational decisions.

Fact #3 - Divergent questions can also be directional, meaning that while your question may not offer the correct answer, it will block or eliminate other less desirable alternatives and push the person toward a desired conclusion. Rhetorical questions can be very influential in shaping a person’s opinion, especially when critical information has been introduced within several minutes of asking the question.

An example of a divergent question would be, “Where do you think we would be today if the signers of the Declaration of Independence had been as self-absorbed and morally corrupt as today’s political figures seem to be?”

This is a divergent question followed by an inferred statement that today’s political figures are corrupt and self-absorbed. I offer no supporting information other than a simple declarative statement; yet, this statement cannot help but shape and narrow the response to the question. Very few people will spend the time to consider that some of our politicians may not be corrupt or self-absorbed, despite the fact that I have offered no proof one way or the other. In short, I have narrowed and SHAPED the listener’s response to my seemingly rhetorical question.

MATTRIXX Tip: Highly successful evangelical preachers, comedians, TV infomercial hosts, and trial lawyers (and especially Tiger Moms) are very good at using divergent, rhetorical questions. When shaping is used, some of the best questions are presented in such as way as to appear to be a statement rather than a question.

One of the primary sectors I work within is the Assisted Living and Continuous Care Retirement Communities (or AL/CCRC) market. During a recent corporate workshop, I helped a large multi-state sales group create a collection of signature stories to use within their Story-Selling process. Divergent questions were purposely embedded within these stories to help trigger a desired conclusion from the client. These questions will shape specific answers based on the information (and emotional responses) within the Signature Story.

MATTRIXX Tip: When you can make the listener consider alternate scenarios, some of which are painful or emotionally uncomfortable, you can then offer unique, if not simple, solutions.

MATTRIXX Tip: One additional bonus of learning about Sublim Embeds is that once you know about them and understand how and why they work, you will become less susceptible to them when others try to use them on you.
