Year Of The Horse: The Lunar New Year & The Solar Eclipse

Lunar New Year • Solar Eclipse in Aquarius • Dhanishta Nakshatra

Vedic astrology insights provided by Laura Plumb (@lauraplumb).

We stand at a powerful threshold.

The Year of the Snake is ending. The Year of the Horse is beginning.

And this transition is amplified by a New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Aquarius, in Dhanishta Nakshatra - a cosmic reset that feels like both a final shedding and a surge of forward motion.

This is not just a calendar change.
It is an energetic shift in how we move through life.

The Final Shedding: Closing the Year of the Snake

The Snake is ancient, wise, instinctive, and transformative. The Year of the Snake is about:

Shedding old skins

Releasing identities

Deep inner processing

Strategic, quiet power

Survival and discernment

The Year of the Snake has likely asked you to go inward.

To confront fears.
To outgrow versions of yourself.
To sit in complexity.
To be patient.

Snakes do not rush. They wait. They sense. They conserve energy. They strike only when aligned.

As this year closes, ask yourself:

✨ What skin am I ready to shed?
✨ What version of myself have I outgrown?
✨ What fears no longer define me?
✨ What patterns helped me survive, but no longer help me thrive?
✨ What rhythms in my life need tending?
✨ What community is calling for my care?
✨ What is my vision for the future?
✨ Who or what ideals do I want to support?
✨ How can I do that, while tending to my own needs?

This is your final shedding. Let it be intentional.

The Solar Eclipse: A Collective Reset

This New Moon Solar Eclipse in Aquarius brings up themes of social constructs, community, vision for our future, a hunger for collective reform and ideals for freedom, justice, equality… What we are willing to fight for, march for, beat the drum for?

As Aquarius is an air sign, relating to thinking more than feeling, maybe a solar eclipse in Aquarius will help us stand back from reactive emotions and respond more intellectually, more idealistically?

What is the vision of the world we want for our future? For our children? How can we move towards this together?

When the Sun is eclipsed, it affects leaders, leadership. So this solar eclipse reminds us that we must grow solidarity with our friends, peers, neighbours and build a world based on our humanity, with dignity and respect for all. Aquarius shifts the focus from “me” to “we.”

“There’s enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed.” ~ Gandhi

As we close the Snake year, we are asked:

What outdated alliances or group identities need shedding?

What kind of future do we want to build together?

The Snake transforms internally. Aquarius reforms externally.

This eclipse bridges those two processes.

Enter the Horse: Movement, Freedom, Fire

Where Snake is coiled and inward, Horse is expansive and kinetic.

Horse energy brings:

Momentum

Courage

Freedom

Passion

Directness

Wild vitality

If Snake was about strategy and shedding, Horse is about movement and embodiment.

The question shifts from:
“What must I release?”
to
“Where am I ready to run?”

The Horse does not slither in shadows.
It runs in open fields.

But healthy Horse energy requires rhythm. Not reckless galloping.

Dhanishta’s Drum: Finding Your Pace

This New Moon falls in Dhanishta, symbolised by the drum.

The drum sets the tempo.

Too fast, and we burn out.
Too slow, and we stagnate.

The transition from Snake to Horse demands conscious pacing.

Last year may have felt heavy, intense, introspective. This new year wants movement, but aligned movement.

Ask yourself:

🥁 What is the natural rhythm of my energy right now?
🥁 Where do I need steady momentum instead of sudden bursts?
🥁 What does freedom mean to me, in my body, my work, my relationships?
🥁 How do I move toward my vision without abandoning my nervous system?

Listen to your heartbeat. Walk in nature. Feel the Earth beneath your feet. Let your movement be relational, not reactive.

From Survival to Vitality

Snake survives.
Horse thrives.

This is the deeper shift.

We are moving from containment to expression.

So before you leap forward, pause.

Shivaratri, the dark moon night before the New Moon, offers sacred stillness. A moment for prayer, mantra, meditation, silence. One last honouring of the inward journey before outward momentum builds.

Can you trust the darkness before the dawn of movement?

Key Takeaways for the New Year Transition

🐍 Shed what constricts you (roles, fears, narratives).
🌬 Step into collective awareness - your path affects the whole.
🐎 Embrace movement, but find sustainable rhythm.
🥁 Let your life move like a drumbeat, not a panic response.

This is a shift from internal transformation to embodied action.

Reflection Prompts for the Year of the Horse

Take time with these as the new year begins:

✨ What am I no longer available for?
✨ What kind of freedom am I truly seeking?
✨ Where in my life am I ready to move forward boldly?
✨ What vision for the future energises me rather than exhausts me?
✨ What community will I run with this year?
✨ How do I maintain connection to nature while increasing momentum?
✨ What does aligned ambition feel like in my body?

This is a year to run...but not to flee.

Run toward what is true.
Run with those who share your values.
Run in rhythm with the Earth.

Shed.
Then move.

The Language Of Scent: Why We’re Drawn To Certain Fragrances

Scent is our most intimate sense. Before we think, before we decide, before we even realise what we’re feeling , we respond. A breath in. A subtle shift in the body. A memory stirred, an emotion softened, a sense of comfort or desire awakened.

Unlike sight or sound, scent bypasses the rational mind and travels directly to the limbic system - the part of the brain that governs emotion, memory and instinct. This is why fragrance has the power to move us so deeply. It doesn’t ask for permission. It simply arrives.

Why certain scents feel irresistible

We are often drawn to particular scents without fully understanding why. Science suggests that smell plays a powerful role in attraction, connection and even compatibility. Certain aromas can trigger feelings of safety, warmth or familiarity, while others awaken curiosity, sensuality or calm.

Part of this response is biological. Our bodies subtly read scent as information or cues about health, balance and harmony. Another layer is emotional: fragrance becomes imprinted with memory. A single aroma can transport us to a person, a place, or a moment in time, long after it has passed.

But beyond biology and psychology, there is also something more subtle at play.

The Ayurvedic view: fragrance as subtle medicine

In Ayurveda, scent is not decorative, it's therapeutic. Fragrance works on the level of 'prana', the vital life force that governs breath, energy and the nervous system. Aromas can calm or stimulate, ground or uplift, depending on their nature and how they are used.

Each fragrance carries a 'rasa', an essence that influences not just the senses, but the mind and emotions. This is why certain scents help us sleep more deeply, feel more centred, or soften into connection. They gently guide the nervous system into balance.

When we are drawn to a particular fragrance, Ayurveda would say we are intuitively seeking what we need - more calm, more grounding, more softness, more clarity. It's a reflection of our individual doshas, and where we are imbalanced.

The Mauli Dosha Massage Oils are designed to reflect this connection. If your Dosha is Kapha, the oil is fragranced to be energising and uplifting. If Vata, it's designed to ground and calm. If Pitta, it cools and balances.

Don't know your Dosha? Take the quiz here.

The connection between scent and sensuality

You may have seen the clip. A famous model said (on more than one occasion) that Mauli Rituals Sacred Union Scent & Dry Oil guaranteed her "sex for life". Commenting that any time she "wants 'it', she sprays this on and it works every. single. Time."

So what are the key ingredients in Sacred Union that make it so sensual?

Blood Orange - The spark, light-hearted, flirtatious

Bright, juicy and emotionally uplifting, blood orange is linked to joy, openness and optimism. Neurologically, citrus notes stimulate alertness and elevate mood, making us feel more receptive and playful - key ingredients in attraction.

Lime - Confidence, clarity, presence

Lime cuts through heaviness with freshness and clarity. It sharpens awareness while keeping the nervous system buoyant, helping release emotional fatigue or self-consciousness.

Grapefruit - Ease, attraction, openness

Grapefruit carries a subtle sensual brightness. It's energising without being sharp. It’s known to reduce stress while enhancing body awareness, helping us feel more at ease in ourselves.

Rose Damascena - Tenderness, emotional intimacy, devotion

Rose is the archetypal scent of love, but its power is deeper than symbolism. It has been shown to calm the heart rate, reduce anxiety and create feelings of emotional safety.

In Ayurveda, rose is profoundly heart-opening, cooling excess heat in the emotions while nurturing compassion, intimacy and vulnerability.

Jasmine Sambac - Sensuality, pleasure, magnetism

Jasmine is traditionally associated with sensuality and desire across cultures. Its heady floral notes stimulate the limbic system, often linked to feelings of confidence, pleasure and attraction.

Cedarwood - Feeling held, protected and supported

Cedarwood offers stability and strength. Its woody warmth signals safety to the nervous system, helping the body relax into closeness without vigilance.

Pepper - Heat, arousal, energy

Pepper introduces warmth and stimulation. It increases circulation and subtly heightens sensory perception, awakening desire without overwhelming the nervous system.

Mineral-Rich Rose Quartz Powder - Presence, care, openness

Rose quartz is symbolically linked to unconditional love, compassion and emotional healing. While not aromatic, its energetic association reinforces themes of tenderness and heart-centred connection.

Shop the sensual Sacred Union range here.

Which scent is right for you?

Fragrance should smell beautiful, but it should also support your wellbeing. Start with how you want to feel:

Which scents are linked to which emotions?

Lavender — relaxation, calm, stress relief

Vanilla — warmth, comfort, nostalgia

Ylang Ylang — sensuality, joy, euphoria

Mint — alertness, clarity, invigoration

Cinnamon — passion, excitement, warmth

Neroli — romance, hope, joy

From there, you can explore different blends and discover which speaks most to you. Because sometimes, the most powerful connections begin with a single breath in… and a long, conscious exhale.

The Healing Power of Colour: An Ayurvedic Guide to Balancing Your Dosha

Colour is more than something we see, it is something we feel. In Ayurveda and Yogic philosophy, colour is understood as a subtle force that influences our emotions, nervous system and energetic body. Each hue carries its own vibration, interacting with the mind, chakras and auric field to either restore harmony or create imbalance.

Learn how to embrace more of the colours that benefit you (and avoid those that don't) with this simple guide.

How Colour Influences Wellbeing in Ayurveda

In the same way it views diet and ritual, Ayurveda sees no single colour as universally healing. What soothes one person may overstimulate another. This is because our emotional and mental state is shaped by the gunas, three energetic qualities that govern movement, stillness and balance within the mind.

The Three Gunas and Colour Energy

Sattvic (balance, clarity, harmony)
Soft whites, golds, blues and violets promote calmness, clarity and peace. These colours are nourishing to the nervous system and support emotional equilibrium.

Rajasic (activity, stimulation, intensity)
Reds, oranges, yellows and purples stimulate movement, motivation and drive. In excess, they can lead to restlessness, irritation or overthinking.

Tamasic (heaviness, inertia, dullness)
Dark browns, blacks and greys encourage grounding but can also increase lethargy, emotional heaviness and stagnation when overused.

In general, static and soft colours support balance, while excessive rajasic tones may aggravate Vata and Pitta. Dark, heavy colours tend to increase Kapha and tamasic qualities.

Chromotherapy: Healing Through Colour

Chromotherapy, or colour therapy, uses colour as a healing modality to influence mood, energy and physiological response. The colours we surround ourselves with (in our homes, clothing and personal rituals) can significantly shape how we feel within a space.

When used intentionally, colour becomes a form of self-care, subtly guiding the nervous system toward balance and ease.

Choosing Colours for Your Dosha

Vata Dosha (Air & Ether)

Vata is light, cold, dry and mobile, closely linked to the nervous system.

Balancing colours: Warm oranges, golds and soft yellows help ground Vata energy and create a sense of stability and warmth.

Colours to limit: Blacks, greys and neon shades may aggravate anxiety, dryness and nervous tension.

Pitta Dosha (Fire & Water)

Pitta is hot, sharp and intense, governing metabolism and focus.

Balancing colours: Cooling blues, whites, silvers, soft pastels and gentle neutrals calm excess heat and soothe emotional intensity.

Colours to limit: Bright reds, oranges and yellows may increase irritability, impatience and internal heat.

Kapha Dosha (Earth & Water)

Kapha is cool, heavy, moist and grounding, associated with stability and structure.

Balancing colours: Bright, stimulating tones such as red, orange, yellow and contrasting colours help lift heaviness and encourage movement.

Colours to limit: Whites, silvers, pinks and deep dark shades may increase lethargy and emotional stagnation.

The Energetics of Individual Colours

Black
Cold, dry and heavy. Can aggravate all doshas if overused and carries a strongly tamasic quality, connecting to introspection but also emotional heaviness.

Blue
Cool and dry. Calming and sattvic, balancing for Pitta but potentially aggravating for Vata and Kapha when overused. Supports meditation and clarity.

Brown
Neutral and grounding. Balances all doshas in moderation but becomes tamasic and heavy in excess.

Gold
Warm and luminous. Increases ojas (vital essence), soothes the heart and balances Vata and Kapha. Deeply sattvic and harmonising.

Green
Moist and neutral. One of the most balancing colours for all doshas, supporting healing, regeneration and emotional steadiness.

Orange
Warm and energising. Stimulates creativity, vitality and joy. Balancing for Vata and Kapha, neutral for Pitta when used gently.

Red
Hot and stimulating. Strongly rajasic. Beneficial for Kapha in moderation but aggravating for Pitta. Softer reds and pinks are gentler for Vata.

Violet & Purple
A blend of cooling blue and warming red. Violet soothes Pitta, while warmer purples support Vata and Kapha depending on intensity.

White
Cool and calming. Sattvic and soothing for Pitta and Kapha, though excessive use may aggravate Vata’s cold and dry qualities.

Yellow
Warm and uplifting. Encourages joy and mental clarity. Balancing for Vata and Kapha, but overly stimulating for Pitta when used in excess.

Bringing Colour Into Daily Ritual

Whether through the spaces you inhabit, the clothing you wear or the rituals you practice, colour is a powerful yet often overlooked way to support wellbeing. When chosen in harmony with your dosha, colour becomes a quiet form of nourishment, helping to steady the mind, uplift the spirit and restore balance.

New Moon January 18: Uttarashadha Nakshatra, Capricorn

Exact degree 19:51pm UTC (7:51pm)

By Laura Plumb, Vedic Astrologer

January's New Moon is crowded with 5 planets in Capricorn all in the same nakshatra, so all in the same first 7,25 degrees if the constellation.

If you have Capricorn moon you might really feel the heat. It is a lot of energy on your mental, emotional body. Same is also true if Capricorn is your Ascendant, or Sun, though a bit less emotional, perhaps more physical, or at the soul level, respectively.

When the Moon is new, it is in close degree to the Sun. Any planet close to the sun by degree, is considered Combust. In this intance, not only the Moon, but also Mars, Mercury, and Venus are combust. Even Pluto is nearby, also currently in Uttarashadha Nakshatra. So the only planet here with strength is the Sun.

Planets are Devic energies, transmitting light from the sun and the stars. They are not here to harm, but to help us learn, grow and evolve. Find where Capricorn is in your natal chart, which house, which planets, to get an idea of which part of your body or life this is pushing on, pushing for more self-care, self-love, self-truth.

Uttara Shadha as a nakshatra of enduring victory, success that aligns with Dharma. Uttara Shadha is the nakshatra of perseverance, moral stamina, and ultimate triumph. It is symbolized by the elephant tusk, representing devotion, dignity, and unbreakable resolve (Ganesha broke off his tusk to use as a pen to continue writing the Mahabharata as it was dictated by Sage Vyasa).

It is ruled by the Sun, bringing authority, leadership, mastery, self-confidence, life vitality and truth, and guided by the Vishwadevas, universal guardians of cosmic order, goodness, and righteousness.

Uttara Shadha gives the energy to:

Not quit when things get difficult

Be willing to walk the long road of integrity

Achieve influence or recognition without compromising

Lead, not through force, but through inner steadiness and moral clarity

Gain mastery of the self

Endure, with unwavering determination, and moral authority

Be a leader rooted in service

Uttara Shadha is about standing tall at the end of the journey and knowing you did not betray yourself to get there.

Uttara Ashadha reminds us that true victory is not loud. It is earned slowly, through integrity, perseverance, and an unshakable commitment to what is right.

This is the nakshatra of enduring success - not the kind that flashes and fades, but the kind that stands the test of time because it was built authentically, upon your core values. Uttara Ashadha teaches us that when we stay aligned with dharma, when we do not quit on ourselves or our values, life resolves in integrity.

Uttarashadha gives moral stamina, quiet strength, the energy of the Sun. It helps you realize you are everything you need to be to live strong and vibrant.

Reflection Prompts:

Where in my life am I being asked to stay the course, rather than rush the outcome?

How can I keep remembering what is essential, what is necessary, and what is not? And how can I let that which is not, go with grace?

How do I remember the light within? And live humbly but powerfully from there?

* It is also a Shula Yoga, which is tricky. Last time we had that was January 3rd (US bombed Venezuala and removed Maduro).

** Ukraine has Capricorn rising, with Saturn in Uttarashada in the Ascendant. The Russian invasion began when Saturn was transiting Capricorn.

*** Best advice is to stay in and meditare or engage in creative hobbies, artisitic joys. Avoid crowds, and conflict.

Lymphatic Massage Rituals to De‑Puff & Sculpt

Puffiness, bloating and heaviness in the face and body are often signs that the lymphatic system needs gentle support. Lymphatic flow is closely linked to circulation, digestion, immunity and radiance. When lymph stagnates, we feel swollen, sluggish and disconnected from our natural contours.

At Mauli Rituals, we believe lymphatic massage should feel intuitive, nurturing and deeply effective. Whether using just your hands or enhancing your practice with tools and oils, small daily rituals can help de‑puff, sculpt and restore balance, from face to body.

Below, we share four lymphatic massage rituals designed to address common concerns such as facial puffiness, water retention, bloating and tension.

1. Use Your Hands: Facial Lymphatic Massage for Puffiness

Best for: Morning facial puffiness, sinus congestion, tired skin

Your hands are powerful tools. Gentle, intentional touch can stimulate lymphatic drainage, especially around the eyes, jawline and neck, all areas prone to fluid retention.

The Ritual

Begin with clean hands and a few drops of facial oil or serum.

Using your fingertips, apply light upward and outward strokes from the centre of the face toward the ears.

Sweep gently down the sides of the neck toward the collarbones to encourage drainage.

If you notice puffiness around the eyes, use your ring fingers to lightly tap and glide beneath the eye area.

Why it works: The lymphatic system sits just beneath the skin and responds best to gentle pressure. This ritual helps move excess fluid, soften swelling and awaken natural glow.

2. Enhance with Tools: Sculpting the Body with Kansa

Best for: Body puffiness, fluid retention, sluggish circulation, muscle tension

Tools amplify the benefits of lymphatic massage by offering precision, consistency and deeper release. Mauli’s Kansa tools are rooted in Ayurvedic tradition and designed to support circulation while defining contours.

The Ritual

Apply a generous layer of body oil to areas prone to puffiness or bloating, such as the abdomen, thighs and arms.

Using your Kansa tool, work in slow, sweeping motions toward the heart.

Around the stomach, use clockwise circular movements to support digestion and lymphatic flow.

Keep pressure steady but comfortable, allowing warmth to build in the skin.

Why it works: Kansa metal helps balance the skin’s energy while guiding lymph precisely. This ritual supports detoxification, reduces water retention and leaves the body feeling lighter and more sculpted.

3. Add Nourishing Oils: Lymphatic Massage that Restores and De‑Bloats

Best for: Dry skin, bloating, dullness, self‑massage rituals

Oils are essential in Ayurvedic massage. They allow the skin to glide without drag while delivering botanical nourishment deep into the tissues.

The Ritual

Warm your Mauli body or face oil between your palms.

Massage slowly using long, flowing strokes, always directing movement toward lymphatic drainage points (neck, underarms, groin).

For bloating, focus on the lower abdomen with gentle clockwise movements.

Why it works: Massage becomes more effective when the body feels safe and supported. Oils calm the nervous system, making it easier for the lymph to move and for bloating to soften naturally.

4. Support from Within: Daily Habits that Reduce Puffiness

Best for: Chronic bloating, facial swelling, sluggish lymph

External rituals are most powerful when paired with internal support. Lymphatic health depends on hydration, digestion and rest.

The Ritual

Begin your day with warm water or herbal tea to gently awaken digestion.

Favour warm, nourishing foods that are easy to digest.

Incorporate gentle movement such as walking, stretching or yoga.

Prioritise deep, restorative sleep.

Why it works: The lymphatic system has no pump, it relies on movement, hydration and breath. These simple habits enhance lymphatic flow, making your massage rituals even more effective.

Creating Your Lymphatic Ritual with Mauli

Lymphatic massage is not about force or perfection, it is about presence, consistency and care. Whether you are easing facial puffiness with your hands or sculpting the body with Mauli tools and oils, each ritual is an invitation to reconnect with your natural rhythm.

When practised regularly, these rituals help you feel lighter, more defined and deeply supported from within.

Ayurvedic Drinks to Restore Balance After Indulgence

In Ayurveda, digestion is everything. When agni (digestive fire) burns steadily, nourishment is absorbed with ease, energy flows freely and the body maintains its natural rhythm of elimination and renewal. When digestion slows, however, we may feel heavy, puffy, foggy or stagnant. All subtle signals that the system is asking for recalibration rather than restriction.

Rather than fasting or harsh cleanses, instead try warming, digestive rituals that gently restore balance. These simple Ayurvedic elixirs are designed to be sipped slowly, signalling to the nervous system that it is safe to release excess and return to equilibrium.

The Ayurvedic Approach to Digestive Resetting

Digestive imbalance often shows up as excess Kapha - the dosha associated with heaviness, lethargy and accumulation - particularly after rich, sweet or late meals.

Ayurvedic digestive drinks use:

warming spices to rekindle agni

bitter and astringent herbs to support elimination

gentle acids to awaken digestion without irritation

Practised consistently, these rituals help the body metabolise indulgence naturally, restoring clarity and lightness over time.

How to Turn These Drinks Into a Daily Ritual

Remember that often how we consume is as important as what we consume. For best results:

Sip slowly, without distraction

Drink warm, never iced or overly hot

Pause for a few breaths before and after

Avoid layering multiple digestive aids at once

These drinks are not quick fixes, but invitations — moments to reconnect with the body’s innate intelligence.

Ayurvedic Rituals for Hair and Brow Growth

In Ayurveda, healthy hair and brows are more than a matter of appearance, they are a reflection of health and inner harmony. When the body’s Rasa Dhatu (the first tissue formed from the food we eat) is well-nourished, vitality flows through to the Asthi Dhatu (the tissue that governs our hair, nails, and bones). The result? Strength, shine, and strong, healthy growth.

Below, we explore the Ayurvedic foods and rituals that feed beauty from within, and how the Mauli Rituals Brow Oil can help you complete this holistic practice.

Best Ayurvedic Foods for Hair Growth

1. Ghee

Rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, ghee is deeply revered in Ayurveda as a Rasayana (rejuvenator). It nourishes every tissue, strengthens the digestive fire (Agni), and ensures that nutrients reach the hair follicles.

A spoonful of warm ghee in your morning porridge or drizzled over steamed greens offers inner moisture - the foundation of lustrous, resilient hair and brows.

2. Sesame and Coconut Oil

Sesame oil, known as the “queen of oils,” is grounding and fortifying which is particularly beneficial for Vata types who experience dryness and thinning. Coconut oil, by contrast, cools Pitta, helping to calm inflammation that can hinder growth.

Incorporating these oils into your diet (or massaging them into the scalp) supports strength, shine, and serenity from root to tip.

3. Avocado, Nuts & Seeds

Avocado, almonds, walnuts, and black sesame seeds are rich in healthy fats, vitamin E, and protein which are all essential for maintaining moisture, flexibility, and strength in the hair shaft. Ayurveda values these foods for their Ojas-enhancing properties. Enjoy a handful of nuts or a drizzle of tahini daily to keep the body (and hair) deeply nourished.

4. Amla

Also known as Indian Gooseberry, Amla is a potent source of vitamin C and a cornerstone of Ayurvedic hair care. It’s known to strengthen hair roots, prevent premature greying, and promote thickness.

A spoon of fresh Amla juice or Amla powder mixed into warm water helps restore vitality and balance.

5. Dark Leafy Greens

Spinach, moringa, and drumstick leaves are celebrated for building Rakta Dhatu (the blood tissue), improving circulation to the scalp and brow area. Their iron and mineral content ensure that oxygen and nutrients reach the hair follicles, supporting sustained, healthy growth.

6. Dates, Figs & Raisins

In Ayurveda, naturally sweet foods are grounding and deeply replenishing. Dates, figs, and raisins support the blood and reproductive tissues, which are intimately connected to hair health. Soak a few overnight and enjoy them in the morning to strengthen Rasa and Rakta Dhatu, fostering glossy, nourished strands and fuller brows.

The Ritual of Brow Oil

Topical nourishment is the perfect complement to an Ayurvedic diet. Our Grow Strong Brow Oil is crafted to strengthen and condition brows using a blend of potent botanical actives and Ayurvedic wisdom.

Key Ingredients:

Nourish daily with wholesome foods, stay hydrated, and dedicate a few quiet moments each evening to your brow ritual. With time, patience, and care, you’ll see (and feel) the difference.

Mudras for Good Health: Ancient Hand Gestures for Balance and Wellbeing

Across Ayurveda and yoga, mudras (symbolic hand gestures) have been practised for thousands of years as a way to channel energy, restore balance, and support overall wellbeing. Though deceptively simple, these subtle movements carry profound benefits for mind, body, and spirit.

In this guide, we explore several key mudras, how to practise them, and their benefits, so you can incorporate them into your daily rituals.

What Are Mudras?

The Sanskrit word mudra means “seal” or “gesture.” In practice, mudras help direct the flow of prana (life force) within the body, often combined with meditation or pranayama (breathing exercises). Each mudra corresponds to specific elements, energies, and benefits, from grounding and strength to clarity and joy.

1. Gyan Mudra – The Mudra of Wisdom

How to practise:
Join the tip of the forefinger to the tip of the thumb. Hold gently for 15 minutes, with palms resting upward on your knees.

Benefits:

Increases wisdom and insight

Purifies and calms the mind

Encourages joy and positivity

Supports the release of addictive habits

Gyan Mudra is ideal for meditation, focus, and grounding.

2. Purna Gyan Mudra – The Gesture of Clarity

How to practise:
Sit cross-legged. Place both hands in Gyan Mudra posture. Keep the right hand near the chest and the left hand near the knee.

Benefits:

Soothes irritability

This mudra deepens the effects of Gyan Mudra, fostering mental and emotional balance.

3. Prithvi Mudra – The Gesture of Earth

How to practise:
Touch the tip of the ring finger to the tip of the thumb, keeping other fingers extended. Rest hands on the knees, palms facing upward.

Associated with the Earth element, Prithvi Mudra grounds and strengthens both body and mind.

4. Varun Mudra – The Gesture of Water

How to practise:
Join the tip of the little finger to the tip of the thumb. Keep other fingers extended and relaxed. Rest hands on the knees, palms facing upward.

5. Apan Mudra – The Gesture of Detoxification

How to practise:
Touch the tips of the middle finger and ring finger to the tip of the thumb. Keep other fingers extended.

Apan Mudra is excellent for cleansing the body and restoring inner equilibrium.

6. Surya Mudra – The Gesture of Fire

Surya Mudra activates the fire element, energising the body and promoting inner warmth.

How to Include Mudras in Daily Life

Time & duration: Practise each mudra for 10–20 minutes daily. Even short sessions can bring benefits with regularity.

Combine with breath: Deep, mindful breathing amplifies the effect of mudras.

Choose your moment: Morning meditation, before bed, or during quiet breaks in the day.

Create a ritual: Light a candle, sip herbal tea, or play soft music to enrich your practice.

Mudras are a gentle yet powerful tool for enhancing health, clarity, and vitality. From Gyan Mudra for wisdom to Prithvi Mudra for stability, and Apan Mudra for detoxification, incorporating these practices into your daily rituals can help you reconnect with your body, mind, and spirit.

In Ayurveda, true wellness comes from small, consistent actions, and mudras are a perfect example of this philosophy. Simple, subtle, and effective, these gestures offer a path to balance and harmony, one mindful hand at a time.

Milli On and On was set up in memory of my beloved daughter Milli, who passed away on April 2012, from an inoperable brain tumor. I feel privileged to have had a walking, talking angel by my side for ten extraordinary years and whilst I wish she could have stayed longer, that wish was never in my power. What I can do is support charities that make the lives of children happier and healthier and in this way, I keep my darling daughter’s love and goodness living on.

Born on Valentine’s, Milli was a joyful, loving girl with an infectious giggle and a passion for life. Milli embraced her life and all she endured with extraordinary strength, determination, and dignity. Whilst Milli was terminally ill, she was surrounded by unbounded love and this made her journey easier. I am only too aware that not all children are as cherished as Milli. The charities we support do their best to bridge the gap, giving children a lifeline.

Milli On and On has a target of raising one million pounds to support charities that make the lives of children healthier and happier, so please give what resonates, be it getting involved in a project, donation or even an act of kindness.

The ‘Spread Some Happiness’ fundraising initiative is so dear to my heart and I love that giving and receiving can create such joy. The seed of this idea was no-doubt influenced by the joy I felt when creating two books for Thames & Hudson.

I asked the question - What makes you happy and what do you do to make someone else happy? Everyone from the school head, caretaker, cooks, teachers and students answered in their own way. Some in the form of poems, others in pictures, mission statements and others in memories.

In asking the parents to purchase the hardback books for as little as £10 or as much as they wished to give, we not only raised £24,000 split over 3 schools, but I hope we were able to capture a heartfelt moment to be cherished for all time. The donations were spread over Gosh, Rays of Sunshine and couple of smaller charities. I loved this labour of love and if you’d like to create something similar in your school, I would be more than happy to help. Milli was a giggling beam of light and her mantra was ‘spread love and joy’, so let’s do it.

I first came across Harmony House in 2021 and since then it so gratifying to see how much this Delhi-based charity has grown. Started by Lucy Bruce, this charity gives Delhi’s slum children an opportunity to study, eat a nutritious meal, and be inspired to grow beyond their life circumstances. The school has grown from strength to strength and is now building a sports ground and dance studio to support those children who might not be academically bright but may instead have an affinity to other forms of learning. Milli was adopted from India and she could well have been one of these children. All children have the right to learn and grow.

Another wonderful way to fundraise, inspired by our gigge ball Mills. Naturally, Milli loved Halloween - dressing up and being handed sweets, no questions asked - what’s not to love?

When the children were young, we moved to an area of West London, that fortunately for us celebrated Halloween in a big way, so much so, there was a trophy for the best-dressed house. When Mills passed, I spoke to a neighbour about fundraising and we decided Halloween provided the perfect opportunity. In short, we would decorate our homes and offer an abundance of sweets and in exchange, parents would put money in our charity buckets. The event became known locally and further afield. Each year some 2,000 children descend on our streets and we raise thousands. One year we raised a whopping £14k through match funding. This project so far, has raised approx 75k divided between GOSH and our local charity The Avenues.

Ayurvedic Rituals for Autumn Balance

As summer’s brightness softens into autumn’s grounding energy, Ayurveda invites us to align with the natural rhythm of the seasons. The transition into autumn brings crisper air, shorter days, and a gentle slowing of pace. According to Ayurvedic wisdom, this is a time to calm Vata dosha, the energy of movement and air, and to nurture stability, warmth, and inner balance.

When embraced mindfully, seasonal shifts become an opportunity for renewal. By weaving small yet powerful rituals into your day, you can support digestion, strengthen immunity, soothe the nervous system, and feel more at ease as your body and mind adapt to the changing climate.

Here are six Ayurvedic-inspired practices to help you embrace autumn with grace.

Sip Spiced Elixirs

As the weather cools, our digestive fire (agni) can weaken. Herbs and spices such as ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and tulsi help keep this inner flame strong. Begin your mornings with a spiced herbal infusion - a simple ritual that warms the body, strengthens immunity, and brings a sense of comfort to the start of your day.

Light an Evening Flame

With daylight fading earlier, evenings can sometimes feel heavy. Counterbalance this by lighting a natural candle. In Ayurveda, flame represents tejas - our inner radiance and clarity. This practice not only creates a serene atmosphere but also reminds us to nurture our own inner light during the darker months.

Oil Your Ears and Feet

Two of Ayurveda’s lesser-known but deeply soothing practices for autumn are karna purana (oiling the ears) and evening foot massage. Place a drop of warm sesame oil into each ear to calm the nervous system, and massage oil into the soles of your feet before bed. Together, these rituals ground scattered energy, ease restlessness, and invite deep, restorative sleep.

Align with Nature’s Rhythm

Autumn is the season of release. Just as trees let go of their leaves, we too are called to shed what no longer serves us. Journaling can be a simple yet powerful way to do this -noting down the thoughts, habits, or clutter you wish to release. This act of letting go creates space for clarity, renewal, and inner balance.

Breathe with the Season

Breathwork is a profound way to restore harmony in the body and mind. Nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) is especially grounding, helping to balance the doshas and soothe Vata. Just a few minutes each day can ease anxiety, steady the mind, and build resilience against the challenges of seasonal change.

Cocoon in Abhyanga

Perhaps the most nourishing ritual for autumn is abhyanga - self-massage with warm Ayurvedic oil. This practice protects against dryness, softens the skin, enhances circulation, and quiets the nervous system. More than a physical treatment, it is a cocooning ritual of self-care that helps you feel deeply grounded, comforted, and restored.

With mindful rituals, the seasonal shift becomes less about bracing for change and more about flowing with it. By grounding and nourishing yourself through Ayurveda’s timeless practices, you can step into autumn not depleted, but renewed.

What is Champi? The Ancient Indian Head Massage for Mind, Body & Soul

Champi, the traditional Indian head massage, is a time-honoured practice that soothes the mind, nourishes the scalp, and strengthens the bond between giver and receiver. Passed down through generations, this sacred ritual is as much about human connection as it is about hair health.

In this journal, we explore the origins of champi, its benefits, and how you can bring this beautiful ritual into your own home, whether for yourself or with someone you love.

The Origins of Champi

The word champi (pronounced chum-pee) comes from the Hindi word chāmpnā, meaning “to massage.” Rooted in the 5,000-year-old science of Ayurveda, champi has long been used in India as part of daily and weekly self-care rituals.

Traditionally, mothers would massage their children’s scalps with warm, herbal oils to:

Promote strong, lustrous hair

Encourage relaxation and deep sleep

Nurture emotional connection through touch

This practice became so integral to family life that it inspired the English word “shampoo,” which originally referred to the act of massaging the scalp, not cleansing it.

The Benefits of Champi

Ayurveda teaches that the head is a powerful energy centre, with vital marma points (pressure points) that influence the entire body. Regular champi offers a host of benefits:

Relieves stress and tension: Stimulates the release of feel-good hormones and calms the nervous system.

Boosts hair health: Improves circulation to the scalp, encouraging growth and nourishing the roots.

Enhances sleep quality: Helps quiet a restless mind and prepare the body for deep rest.

Strengthens emotional bonds: Creates moments of closeness and connection between giver and receiver.

How to Do Champi Massage at Home

1. Choose Your Oil

Traditionally, Ayurvedic hair oils infused with herbs like amla, brahmi, and bhringraj are used for their restorative properties. At Mauli, our Grow Strong Hair Oil blends these with essential oils to balance the doshas and promote scalp health.

Warm the oil slightly by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes - never directly over heat.

2. Set the Scene

Champi is best performed in a calm, comfortable space. Dim the lights, put on soothing music, and encourage slow, mindful breathing to deepen the relaxation.

3. Apply the Oil

Part the hair in sections and apply oil directly to the scalp using your fingertips or a dropper.

Start at the crown and work outwards, ensuring the oil reaches all areas.

4. Massage with Intention

Using gentle but firm pressure:

Make small circular motions with your fingertips.

Pay extra attention to the temples, base of the skull, and behind the ears.

Gently tug sections of hair to stimulate blood flow and release tension.

5. Let the Oil Work

For maximum benefit, leave the oil on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if possible. Cover the hair with a towel or cap to protect bedding.

Sharing Champi with Those You Love

One of the most beautiful aspects of champi is that it can be given or received at any age. From a soothing massage for a child before bedtime, to a loving act between partners, or a moment of care for ageing parents.

This simple ritual nurtures not only hair and scalp health but also the deep human need for touch, care, and connection.

Bringing the Ritual into Modern Life

In our fast-paced, screen-filled days, champi offers a moment to slow down and reconnect. Whether you’re treating yourself or gifting the ritual to someone dear, this timeless practice restores balance to both the outer and inner self.

Crowning Glory: The Sacred Symbolism of Hair in Indian Tradition

Across centuries and cultures, hair has carried layered meanings. But in Indian philosophy, it is often seen as a powerful medium of energy - a conduit of prana (life force) and a reflection of our inner vitality.

In Vedic tradition, the head is considered a sacred space, the crown of the body where wisdom and divinity reside. Hair, growing from the scalp, symbolises growth, vitality and connection to the cosmos. It is both deeply personal and spiritually symbolic.

Rituals of Growth and Devotion

The way hair is treated in Indian culture often reflects life's transitions:

At birth - a child's first haircut (known as mundan) is believed to purify past karmas and mark a new beginning.

Sadhus (holy men) - they shave their heads to release worldly attachments, symbolising surrender and renunciation.

Married women - they traditionally braid and oil their hair, not just for beauty, but as a mark of devotion and a continuation of ancestral rituals.

Each gesture, whether it's cutting, growing, braiding or oiling, tells a story of where one is in their spiritual journey.

What Ayurveda Says About Hair

Ayurveda views hair health as a direct mirror of inner balance.

Hair is a by-product of bone tissue and linked to the Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue element). A nourished digestive system and a calm mind support strong, healthy hair, while stress, poor diet and imbalance in the doshas (especially excess pitta) can lead to thinning, dryness and premature greying.

The scalp, rich in marma points (energy centres), is closely connected to the nervous system. When we massage the scalp with therapeutic oils, we're not just feeing the follicles, we're calming the mind, grounding the body and regulating the flow of energy.

Haircare as a Modern Meditation

In today's fast-paced world, haircare can easily become another item to tick off the to-do list. But what if it became a moment of pause, a way to come back to yourself?

Oiling the hair, massaging the scalp and inhaling grounding botanicals are all more than beauty rituals. They are acts of connection. Ways to honour the sacred crown we carry.

How to Build a Hair Ritual

You don't need hours. You just need a few simple steps.

1. Begin with oil

Before washing your hair, warm a few drops of Grow Strong Hair Oil between your palms. Massage slowly into the scalp, focusing on the temples and the base of the neck - areas where tension gathers. This stimulates circulation, soothes the nervous system and strengthens follicles.

2. Massage & stimulate

This step not only feels good on the senses, but it also has surprising benefits for your scalp and hair. Try using our Kansa Scalp Stimulator or Kansa Comb after you apply oil - made from the ancient metal alloy of copper and tin, Kansa has been used for centuries to balance the doshas and revitalise energy channels.

The gentle pressure and coolness of the Kansa metal helps detoxify the scalp, boost lymphatic flow and awaken the marma points that govern mental clarity and emotional balance. Use slow, circular motions for 5-10 minutes to melt away tension and encourage nutrient-rich blood flow to the follicles.

3. Cleanse & condition gently

Your average supermarket shampoos are great for instant gratification, but not so great for long-term hair health. Try using a natural, sulphate-free formula like Grow Strong Shampoo instead. It swaps out silicones and SLS for nourishing, adaptogenic ingredients like turmeric, frankincense and Himalayan cedarwood that help to purify the scalp and encourage hair growth without disrupting natural oils or causing product buildup.

In the end, how we care for our hair is how we care for ourselves. It's the early morning oiling ritual passed down from mother to daughter. It's the quiet exhale at the end of the day, fingertips at the scalp. It's a way to reconnect. To tradition, to intention and to the essence of who we are.

Next time you reach for your haircare, take a moment. In that moment, there is devotion. And in that devotion, there is beauty.

Ayurvedic Wisdom For Every Stage of Female Health

Ayurveda offers a deeply nurturing approach to female health, recognising the shifting needs of the body, mind and spirit across each life stage. Whether you're navigating your monthly cycle, managing hormonal imbalances, or moving through the transition of menopause, Ayurvedic wisdom provides gentle, effective tools to bring you back into balance.

Here we explore four key phases of a woman's journey and how simple adjustments to diet and daily rituals can support harmony and health.

The Menstrual Cycle: Grounding for Flow and Ease

The menstrual phase is a time of natural cleansing and renewal. Ayurveda teaches us to honour this inward-focused stage with rest, warmth and nourishment.

What to eat:

Focus on warm, well-cooked foods with a touch of ghee to soothe digestion and support the downward flow of energy (Apana Vata). Our favourites include kitchari, stewed apples, root vegetables and herbal teas such as chamomile or ginger.

What to avoid:

Cold foods, heavy exercise and dairy (especially cold milk) can disrupt digestive fire (Agni) and aggravate Vata, leading to cramps, bloating and fatigue.

Ritual:

Try massaging warm oil into the belly button (Nabhi marma). This vital energy point connects to the reproductive system and, when stimulated, helps relieve pain and bring hormonal balance. Use a calming oil such as our Serenity Pitta Body Oil for best results.

Endometriosis + Hormonal Imbalance: Soothing Inflammation Naturally

For those living with endometriosis or cyclical hormone-related symptoms, Ayurveda focuses on reducing inflammation and cleansing the body of accumulated toxins (ama).

What to eat:

Include bitter greens, turmeric and digestion-friendly spices like cumin, coriander and fennel to help support liver detox and reduce inflammation.

What to avoid:

Steer clear of processes sugars, cold dairy and mucus-forming foods like refined wheat which can exacerbate stagnation in the pelvic area.

Ritual:

Try a warm castor oil pack on the lower abdomen 2-3 times a week. This ancient practice is known to soften internal adhesions, ease pain and support circulation and elimination. Follow with rest and gentle warmth.

Fertility: Nourish the Womb and Prepare the Soil

Ayurveda views fertility as the result of optimal health and emotional balance. It's less about quick fixes and more about sustained nourishment, creating the ideal internal environment for new life to grow.

What to eat:

Choose wholesome, nutrient-rich foods like soaked almonds, sesame seeds, seasonal fruits and warm grains. Add ghee, dates, saffron and asparagus to enhance ojas, the subtle essence of vitality and fertility.

What to avoid:

Avoid anything that disturbs digestion or builds excess heat. Excess caffeine, alcohol, high-sugar foods and extreme fasting can all weaken reproductive energy.

Ritual:

Practice abhyanga (daily self-massage) using a fertility-supporting oil rich in Shatavri and other tonics. This ritual calms the nervous system, enhances circulation to the reproductive organs and builds ojas.

Menopause: A Time of Transition, Wisdom and Deep Nourishment

As the body moves into menopause, there is a natural decline in estrogen and ojas, which can lead to dryness, anxiety, sleep disturbances and emotional shifts. Ayurveda encourages embracing this change with softness, rest and grounding rituals.

What to eat:

Opt for oily, nourishing and grounding foods such as warm almond milk with saffron, dates and a pinch of nutmeg, as well as cooked vegetables, soups and healthy fats like sesame and flaxseed oil.

What to avoid:

Minimise spicy foods, cold or raw meals, red meat and excess caffeine, all of which can aggravate Pitta and Vata, intensifying symptoms like hot flushes or mood swings.

Ritual:

Apply nasya oil (herbal nasal drops) daily. This ancient practice moisturises dry nasal passages, improves mental clarity and calms the nervous system, soothing symptoms like brain fog, insomnia and emotional imbalance.

We believe that when a woman is in balance, she is a force of nature. Through conscious eating, sacred self care and the gentle guidance of Ayurveda, each stage of womanhood becomes not a challenge to overcome, but an opportunity to become empowered.

Cooling Ayurvedic Recipes for Pitta Season

Summer marks Pitta season, a time governed by the elements of fire and water. When Pitta is in balance, it brings clarity, confidence and vitality. But too much heat, whether from the sun, spicy foods or stress, can tip the scale, leading to inflammation, irritability, breakouts or burnout.

Ayurveda teaches us to live in harmony with nature's rhythms. For summer, that means slowing down, seeking shade and choosing foods that are cooling, hydrating and soothing to both the body and mind.

Below we share two of our go-to Ayurvedic recipes to bring balance during Pitta season. Both are simple to make, beautiful to serve and deeply supportive of your inner calm.

Avocado + Cucumber Cooling Salad

This salad blends the healthy fats of avocado with the cooling hydration of cucumber. Fresh herbs, fennel and lime offer digestive support while helping regulate excess internal heat.

Ingredients (serves 2):

1 ripe avocado, diced

1 medium cucumber, diced or thinly sliced

A handful of fresh mint leaves, chopped

Juice of 1/2 lime

1/4 tsp fennel seeds, lightly crushed

Pinch of Himalayan salt

1 tsp cold-pressed coconut or olive oil (optional)

Sprinkle of black sesame seeds (optional)

Method:

Toast fennel seeds lightly in a dry pan until aromatic.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and toss gently.

Serve at room temperature with a garnish of herbs and sesame.

Mauli Tip: For digestion to function optimally, avoid chilled foods directly from the fridge. Let your salad come to room temparature before serving.

Coconut + Rose Chia Pudding

This naturally sweet, floral pudding offers a gentle way to satisfy summer cravings without overheating the system. Coconut is deeply hydrating and rose helps calm emotional heat, making this ideal for a light breakfast or afternoon treat.

Ingredients (serves 2):

1 cup unsweetened coconut milk

3 tsp chia seeds

1 tbsp maple syrup or raw honey (optional)

1 tsp rose water

A few drops of vanilla extract

Fresh berries or pomegranate to top

Dried rose petals for garnish (optional)

Method:

Whisk coconut milk, chia seeds, rose water, vanilla and sweetener.

Let sit for 5 minutes, then stir again to prevent clumping.

Refrigerate for 1-2 hours or overnight until thickened.

Top with fruit and rose petals before serving.

Mauli tip: For an added boost, add a teaspoon of Organic Amla or Ashwaghanda Powder, depending on how you feel.

Is It Burnout, Or Is It Pitta Imbalance?

We live in a culture that glorifies doing the maximum, being everything to everyone all at once. We place so much importance on the hustle, the early start, the high output, that many of us are depleted, exhausted and trying to give to others from an empty cup.

In recent times, we label this 'burnout', but perhaps this is too simplified a view. Ayurveda invites a more nuanced perspective. It asks us not just what's happening, but why, and how the elements within us have drifted from harmony.

Understanding Pitta: The Fire Within

In Ayurvedic philosophy, the Pitta dosha is made of the fire and water elements. It governs transformation in the body and mind - from digestion and metabolism to focus and ambition.

When balanced, Pitta gives us clarity, courage and drive. When imbalanced, it can manifest as:

Irritability or anger

Overheating (internally or externally)

Acid reflux or inflammation

Perfectionism or harsh self-criticism

Restless sleep or early waking

Feeling "tired but wired"

Is It Burnout...or Too Much Pitta?

Burnout and Pitta imbalance share many symptoms: exhaustion, emotional volatility, mental fog, digestive disruption. But where burnout is a result of prolonged overexertion, Pitta imbalance is often the driver of that pattern - the inner fire that refuses to dim.

Ask yourself:

Am I holding myself to relentless standards?

Do I feel frustrated when others move slowly?

Is my digestion overly sharp, or do I skip meals entirely?

Do I find it difficult to relax, even when tired?

If yes, it may be time to calm the inner heat.

Restoring Balance: Cooling Rituals for Pitta

Pitta needs more than rest, it needs gentleness. Here are a few ways to begin:

1. Embrace cooling foods and herbs

Favour foods that are hydrating, sweet, bitter and astringent:

Cucumber, coconut water, leafy greens, rose petals, fennel, aloe vera.

Avoid too much spice, caffeine and alcohol which can inflame.

2. Rituals of release

Swap high intensity workouts for walks in nature, yin yoga or gentle stretching.

Try self-massage (abhyanga) with a cooling oil infused with sandalwood or vetiver.

3. Protect your inner peace

Create boundaries around your time and attention - especially screen time.

Unplug in the evenings and allow your nervous system to slow.

Practice moonlight bathing or journaling to cool mental heat.

4. Sleep as medicine

Go to bed by 10pm, before the second Pitta surge activates.

Diffuse calming essential oils like rose, lavender, or chamomile to promote deep rest.

Burnout is real, but it's also a symptom of imbalance. In tending to your dosha, you tend to your whole self. The Ayurvedic approach is not about doing more. It's about honouring your nature, deeply and without judgement - and returning, always, to balance.

What Food Cravings Mean According To Ayurveda

There are moments when we instinctively reach for something sweet after a long day, something salty when feeling ungrounded, or a fiery dish to awaken our senses. While these cravings may seem spontaneous, Ayurveda sees them as an invitation to pause and listen.

Rather than dismissing our judging our cravings, we're encouraged to approach them with curiosity. Ayurveda teaches us that food cravings are often subtle signs of imbalance in the doshas.

Cravings as Clues: The Dosha Behind the Desire

Each craving reflects an elemental need to re-centre and restore harmony.

Sweet Cravings

Often linked to Vata imbalance, which can show up as anxiety, restlessness or fatigue. Sweet tastes (especially from warm, grounding foods) offer comfort and stability. Reach for stewed dates with ghee or warm almond milk infused with cardamom.

Salty Cravings

May indicate an imbalance in Kapha - feelings of heaviness, dullness or emotional stagnation. Salt stimulates the senses, but overindulgence can weigh you down further. Try mineral-rich broths, soup or Kitchari (try Anita's family recipe here.)

Spicy Cravings

Craving heat often arises with Pitta imbalances - irritability, intensity or excess internal heat. Rather than fiery chilli, choose digestive spices like cumin, coriander or fennel to bring balance without inflammation.

Cravings and the Digestive Fire (Agni)

Ayurveda sees a healthy digestive fire as essential to discerning what we truly need. When agni is weak, irregular, or overwhelmed, it can distort appetite and create emotional cravings.

To nourish and strengthen your agni:

Eat at regular times

Favour warm, cooked foods

Use gentle digestive spices

Avoid overeating or skipping meals

Three Gentle Ways to Honour Cravings

Pause with Warmth

Before reaching for something, sip warm herbal tea (try fennel, cumin or ginger). This simple act can settle the nervous system and soothe digestive fire, offering clarity in moments of impulse.

Listen Through the Body

Place one hand on your heart, the other on your belly. Close your eyes and take three slow breaths. Ask yourself: Am I truly hungry? Or am I seeking comfort, stimulation or stillness?

Balance with Opposites

In Ayurveda, like increases like, and opposites heal. Craving heat? Cool gently with coconut or mint. Longing for heaviness? Try a light stew or grounding root vegetables. The goal is to nourish, not numb.

Ultimately, our cravings are not errors to fix, they are invitations to listen. Ayurveda teaches us that true nourishment begins with awareness. By creating space to pause, reflect and choose with intention, we transform even the simplest moment of hunger into a sacred act of self care.

In Ayurveda, the tongue is more than a tool for taste, it’s a mirror reflecting the state of your inner health. As part of daily Dinacharya (ritual), observing the tongue can help detect early imbalances in the body before they manifest into more serious concerns. From coating to colour, texture to moisture, your tongue offers a window into your digestion, doshas, and overall wellbeing.

What Your Skin, Hair and Nails Are Telling You According to Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, your skin, hair and nails are far more than surface-level features. They are important indicators, offering quiet clues about your inner balance, digestion and overall wellbeing.

Rather than chasing symptoms with temporary solutions, Ayurveda invites us to listen, gently and intuitively, to what our bodies are trying to say. Because radiant skin, strong nails and lustrous hair don't begin in a bottle, they begin with balance.

The Ayurvedic Approach to Skin, Hair + Nail Health

According to Ayurvedic wisdom, skin, hair and nails are considered upadhatus (or secondary tissues) formed from the same nourishment that builds the bones and deeper tissues. This means their condition is closely tied to digestion, hormonal health, and the quality of your daily rituals.

When your dosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) are imbalanced, this shows up first in the skin, hair and nails.

What Your Skin Might Be Telling You

Dryness, sensitivity, breakouts or premature ageing may be tell-tale signs of something deeper. But there are plenty of small changes and simple rituals you can introduce to restore balance and harmony.

Dryness, Flakiness or Fine Lines (Vata Imbalance)

What it means: Excess Vata can deplete natural oils and moisture, leading to dry, rough and prematurely ageing skin.

Ways to support:

Use warm, oil-based products rich in grounding herbs

Incorporate daily abhyanga (self-massage) with Supreme Skin Face Serum

Eat warm, spiced meals with ghee and root vegetables

Avoid overstimulation and prioritise deep, restorative sleep

Redness, Irritation or Breakouts (Pitta Imbalance)

What it means: When Pitta is elevated, skin becomes hot, inflamed and reactive.

Ways to support:

Calm the skin with cooling botanicals like neem, rose and sandalwood

Avoid spicy, acidic foods and alcohol

Integrate calming rituals like meditation and Pitta-balancing teas

Use gentle, non-stripping skincare like the Supreme Skin Cleansing Oil

Dullness or Congestion (Toxin Build-Up / Low Agni)

What it means: Poor digestion or sluggish lymph can cause skin to appear tired, grey or congested.

Ways to support:

Support digestion with daily Triphala or detoxifying teas

Practice dry brushing or try lymphatic massage with the Skealer

Move daily - through breath-led yoga or walking in nature

Cleanse the skin with gentle exfoliation and balancing oils

What Your Hair Might Be Telling You

Ayurveda teaches us that the health of our hair is deeply connected to bone tissue (asthi dhatu) and the nervous system. Thinning, shedding or dullness are often signs of deeper imbalance, rather than superficial issues.

Thinning, Shedding or Brittle Strands (Vata Imbalance)

What it means: Vata-related stress, anxiety or depletion can disrupt hair growth and nourishment.

Ways to support:

Practice scalp massage (shiro abhyanga) with Grow Strong Hair Oil to calm Vata and stimulate follicles

Nourish from within with grounding herbs like Ashwagandha and Brahmi

Focus on deep rest, warm meals and oil-rich foods

Avoid over-washing and heat styling where possible

Inflamed Scalp, Irritation or Premature Greying (Pitta Imbalance)

What it means: Excess Pitta heats the blood, affecting the scalp's natural balance and melanin production.

Ways to support:

Cool the scalp with herbal oils containing amla, bhringraj and neem

Avoid spicy, oily foods and manage emotional heat through meditation

Wash hair with lukewarm (never hot) water

Use the Grow Strong Shampoo to gently cleanse without stripping

Flat, Lifeless or Congested Scalp (Kapha Imbalance or Ama Build-Up)

What it means: Kapha and toxins can create sluggishness in the scalp and block follicles.

Ways to support:

Exfoliate the scalp weekly

Move your body daily to stimulate lymph and blood flow

Sip warming teas with ginger or trikatu to enliven digestion

Clarify the scalp with Grow Strong Hair Oil

What Your Nails Might Be Telling You

Nails, like hair, are seen in Ayurveda as a by-product of bone tissue. They offer subtle clues about your internal vitality, digestive strength and ability to absorb nourishment.

Brittle, Thin or Peeling Nails (Vata Imbalance)

What it means: A depletion of core nutrients and hydration, often due to a fast-paced or irregular lifestyle.

Ways to support:

Increase dietary oils, sesame seeds, and warm, spiced milks

Massage nails and cuticles with warming oils such as almond or sesame

Sip Vata-balancing teas and commit to regular meal and sleep times

Use adaptogenic support like Ashwagandha to calm the nervous system

Redness, Inflamed Cuticles or Spots on Nails (Pitta Imbalance)

What it means: Internal inflammation or heat affecting the blood and skin around the nails.

Ways to support:

Cool the system with rose, aloe vera and turmeric-based teas

Avoid inflammatory foods and excessive screen time

Keep hands cool and hydrated with gentle, herbal hand oils and cream

Focus on calming rituals such as evening foot soaks or journaling

Thickened Nails, Discolouration or Sluggish Growth (Kapha Imbalance or Ama)

What it means: Build-up of toxins or stagnation in the system.

Ways to support:

Stimulate circulation with daily dry brushing and movement

Use digestive herbs such as Triphala or cumin, fennel and coriander tea

Avoid heavy, damp foods - choose light, warming meals instead

Keep hands and nails dry, especially in cooler months

The main thing to remember - your body is always in conversation with you. By paying attention to the small signs (i.e. dullness in the skin, thinning hair, brittle nails etc.) you begin to understand what's really needed: not more products, but deeper care and more time for you.

And with every ritual, you return to balance.

5 Meditation Myths with Maude Hirst

By Maude Hirst

There are many misconceptions around meditation that can often stop people trying it. I want to dispel these for you in the hope that meditation becomes a practice that excites you.

Myth 1 - You have to clear your mind completely to meditate

This is an impossible ask and isn't what meditation is about. The mind is a thinking machine and is designed to analyse the world around you. You cannot clear your mind but you CAN redirect your awareness elsewhere, so you don't get caught in the over-thinking mind.

TRY THIS: Imagine yourself sitting for meditation and as you close your eyes suddenly your 'To Do' list pops into your mind. You're suddenly thinking "I didn't respond to that email" or "I forgot to take the washing out". Your job in meditation is to redirect your focus away from that list and back into your practice. Focus on your breathing for example rather than the thoughts. Quickly your thoughts will disappear, and you will become present again. That redirecting and refocusing is meditation.

Myth 2 - You are bad at meditation because you cannot sit still

For many people, sitting in stillness is uncomfortable. Don't let this put you off. Total stillness is not required for meditation. Firstly, remember there is no BAD meditation. You are not trying to get to a certain goal through your practice, you are trying to get to know yourself better. This is an individual journey, not a prescribed practice with a certain outcome in mind. There is a reason meditation is called a practice, every time you meditate, it will feel different. Allow for some messiness.

If you need to move, move. But always redirect your awareness back to where you want it to be. There are also movement meditation practices that are brilliant to try. Any practice that redirects your focus inwards and connects you back to yourself and the present moment, is meditation. You can also try different seated positions until you find something that is comfortable for you.

Myth 3 - Meditation takes too much time

Meditation does not have to be a long practice to have profound effects. Recent studies have shown that as little as 10 minutes of meditating a day can deeply transform your life. And we can all find those 10 minutes if we want to.

I also believe that those who don't feel they have enough time are often the people who need to meditate the most. Don't stress about finding long periods of time to meditate, although after feeling the benefits of this practice, I guarantee you will want to. Bust just start with what you have. Make a regular short meditation a priority and the rest will fall into place.

Myth 4 - You need a quiet space to meditate

It would be dreamy if we all lived on an idyllic sunny beach without any distracting noises around us to meditate, but the truth is for many of us, that's not a reality. Life is busy and it is loud and instead of needing it to be quiet externally to meditate, your practice can bring a feeling of quiet internally. I have meditated on the train, with lots of people around me and with distracting noises and I always feel that if I can redirect my focus amongst the noise, I am setting myself up for success in our busy world.

I often teach that when you are in meditation and you hear a noise, instead of getting annoyed by it, notice it and allow for the noise to make you more present before redirecting your awareness back to the meditation. Noise can actually be helpful rather than a hindrance to your practice.

Myth 5 - You'll feel results immediately

We live in a society so fixated on fast results and forget that in doing this we are undermining the importance of sustained wellbeing. Meditation is like exercise, the benefits grow over time. Some people notice changes quickly, but for most, it's a gradual shift in awareness and mindset. The more you practice, the more noticeable the benefits become. Stick with it for weeks, even if it feels subtle. The transformation happens in your daily life, not just on the cushion.

Ayurveda teaches us that true beauty comes from the recognition that we are nature. Just as the moon governs the tides and the changing seasons, it also influences our energy, emotions and even our skin.

By aligning our self care rituals with the lunar cycle, we can support our skin's natural rhythms, promoting balance, radiance and wellbeing from the inside out. Here's how each phase of the moon can guide us toward deeper nourishment and renewal.

The New Moon - Intention & Renewal

A new moon is a fresh start, a time to set intentions, release what no longer serves, and embrace renewal. Our skin, too, benefits from this gentle reset. Hydration and nourishment should be the focus, replenishing what has been lost and preparing for a new cycle of growth.

Ritual: A warm soak with our Sleep Dharma Bath Salts helps ease this transition. Infused with Himalayan salts and calming essential oils, it grounds the body and mind, encouraging you to let go of stress and welcome in new energy.

The Waxing Moon - Growth & Hydration

As the moon begins to grow, so does our energy, circulation and skin renewal. This is a time of absorption, making it ideal for deeply hydrating, nourishing and strengthening the skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, rose and saffron support plumpness and glow.

Ritual: Apply a deeply hydrating face oil or mask infused with restorative botanicals. Drinking warm herbal teas like Tulsi or chamomile, can further support inner nourishment and hydration.

The Full Moon - Illumination & Radiance

The full moon is a peak of energy, intensity and transformation. Skin may feel more sensitive, prone to inflammation or reactive, making this the perfect time for gentle soothing and cooling rituals. Think aloe vera, sandalwood and calming facial massages to balance and restore.

Ritual: Engage in a self-massage with a cooling oil to calm the nervous system. A guided meditation under the full moon can also enhance emotional clarity and balance.

The Waning Moon - Detox & Release

As the moon begins to wane, it invites reflection, detoxification and slowing down. The body and skin are in elimination mode, making this the perfect time for exfoliation, lymphatic drainage and releasing excess.

Ritual: A gentle dry brushing practice followed by a lymphatic facial massage can stimulate circulation and aid in detoxification. Journaling or breathwork can further support the process of mental and emotional release.

Living in Harmony with the Moon

Just as the moon moves through ebb and flow, so does our skin, energy and emotions. By tuning into this natural rhythm, we cultivate a more intuitive approach to self care. One that honours the ever-changing needs of both body and mind.

By syncing your skincare and wellness rituals with the wisdom of the moon, you invite balance, beauty and alignment - not just on the outside, but deep within.

So I'm sharing here some activities that lift my spirits, in the hope that they do yours also. My approach to wellness is rooted in simplicity, intention and joy.
Patters of India Colouring Book

There is something profoundly meditative about colouring intricate patterns, and this book offers this in abundance using the rich tapestry of Indian artistry. Its pages are a canvas for creativity and calm, where you can lose yourself in vibrant designs and reconnect with the present moment. It's a delightful way to unwind and infuse your day with joy and colour.

Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav

This timeless book has been a guiding light for me, offering wisdom on aligning our actions with our soul's purpose.
The Dover in Mayfair: A Culinary Haven

When it comes to nourishing the senses, I enjoy eating out and my top recommendation is The Dover - where indulgence meets simplicity. This elegant restaurant celebrates seasonal, thoughtfully prepared dishes that delight the palate and nourish the body. It's a place to gather, reflect and celebrate the joy of shared meals - a cornerstone of wellbeing that's often overlooked.

Mauli Rituals Kansa Skealer Lymph Massage Tool

My current go-to for a wellbeing fix. Self-massage is of course a cornerstone of Ayurvedic self care and our Kansa Skealer fully embodies this ancient wisdom. Made from the sacred alloy of Kansa, this tool supports lymphatic drainage, detoxification and smooth, radiant skin. It's more than a massage tool - it's a ritual of self love and connection that transforms both skin and spirit. Shop the Skealer here.

How does our interior influence how we feel?

Mocha Mousse, Pantone’s Colour of the Year, has sparked a wave of interior inspiration. Moodboards everywhere showcase this earthy, grounding hue as a central theme - and for good reason. This rich tone beautifully illustrates how colour, space, and design can influence our emotions, a concept deeply rooted in ancient Indian tradition.

In Ayurveda, the link between our interior space and how we feel is profound. The philosophy emphasises that our environment directly impacts our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

The Energy of Space (Vastu Shastra)

Ayurveda is closely tied to Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture and space. It teaches that our surroundings should align with natural energies to promote harmony and health. This might look like:

Clutter-free, balanced spaces that encourage mental clarity and emotional calm.

Proper lighting, natural elements and intentional design can balance the three doshas.

The Five Elements in Our Spaces

Ayurveda states that our interior spaces, like our bodies, are composed of the five elements (Pancha Mahabhutas): earth, water, fire, air and ether.

Earth: Stability and grounding (solid furniture, earthy tones).

Water: Flow and emotional balance (fountains, soft textures).

Fire: Energy and transformation (candles, warm colours).

Air: Movement and creativity (open spaces, fresh air circulation).

Ether: Space and expansion (minimalism, quiet areas).

When we balance these elements in our home, we foster equilibrium in our mind and body. And we don't need to have an enormous space in order to achieve this - clearing out and de-cluttering is key. Then think about how to let the most light in, bring a candle into each room, consider a fresh layer of paint. Small changes can really transform our interiors, and subsequently, how we feel.

Image: Murude Studio @murude.studio

Dosha-Specific Environments

Just as Ayurveda tailors health practices to your dosha, it advises creating environments that balance your constitution:

Vata: Warm, cosy and calming spaces with soft lighting and grounding decor.

Pitta: Cool, airy environments with soothing colours like blue and green.

Kapha: Bright, stimulating spaces with energising elements like light and vibrant decor.

Therefore a Vata may well be more drawn to 2025's colour of the year, but a Kapha may lean more towards a slightly more vibrant hue. Once we consider the intrinsic link between our constitution and our surrounding space, we can unlock so much greater wellbeing.

Sensory Influence on the Mind (Indriyas)

Ayurveda recognises that our senses are gateways to the mind. Our environment affects how we feel through the sensory inputs it contains:

Sight: A tidy, aesthetically pleasing space soothes the mind.

Smell: Aromatic herbs, oils and incense uplight or calm the emotions.

Touch: Soft fabrics and natural textures create comfort and grounding.

Sound: Calming sounds like gentle music or nature sounds reduce stress.

Taste: Keeping a space for mindful eating fosters emotional balance.

Image: DeVol Kitchens @devolkitchens

By cultivating an interior space that mirrors balance and natural harmony, Ayurveda teaches us to create environments that nourish not only our bodies, but also our minds and spirits. We recommend exploring this in your space in 2025.

Setting Intentions For 2025 With Tara Lee Yoga

Tara Lee, @taraleeyoga on Instagram, is internationally recognised as one of Britain's foremost yoga teachers. She specialises in Vinyasa flow yoga, pregnancy yoga and postnatal yoga. Tara regularly appears on television, in magazines and online and has been named one of the UK's top five teachers by the London Evening Standard.

How can yoga help us to set intentions at the beginning of a new year?

Yoga is not just a physical practice, it is also a way to connect deeply with our inner self. By calming the mind, yoga allows us to hear the subtle voice of our inner wisdom, which is often drowned out by external distractions and pressures. When we practice yoga with mindfulness and tune into the breath, we cultivate self-awareness and discernment (viveka), which help us differentiate between what we truly desire and what we’ve been conditioned to strive for.

What's the difference between resolution and intention?

A resolution is often a fixed goal focused on external outcomes, such as “do yoga every day”, “lose weight” or “get a promotion.” It tends to be future-oriented and sometimes rooted in societal ideals of success. Resolutions can feel rigid and failure to achieve them often leads to disappointment and self-criticism.

An intention, in contrast, focuses on aligning with your inner values—emphasising how you want to be rather than what you want to achieve. Intentions deeply resonate with yoga philosophy as they centre on the present moment and the qualities you wish to embody, such as compassion and mindfulness. Intentions aren’t about “fixing” yourself; they’re about celebrating and honouring who you already are while fostering how you want to feel.

What does returning to your truest self mean in the context of yoga and mindfulness?

When we connect to our truest self, we reconnect with our essence, that part of ourselves that is pure, unchanging and authentic.

It is not defined by our roles in life, our achievements or the expectations of others. Yoga philosophy describes this as peeling back the layers of the ego to reveal your inner light or ‘Purusha’. It is about connecting to your truest identity which is already within you.

How can yoga help us shed stress and external pressures that keep us from living authentically?

Yoga integrates body, mind and breath to shed stress, tension and distractions. It calms the nervous system with pranayama (breath practices) and mindful, movements.

We are so often thinking of the past or planning for the next moment and the future. Yoga focuses our attention on the way we are breathing in that moment so we can become more present in the here and now.

Examples of Grounding poses:

- Mountain pose (tadasana)

- Child’s pose (balasana)

- Seated forward fold (paschimottanasana)

Poses to help release stress:

- Legs up the wall (vipariti karani)

- Child’s pose (balasana)

- Pigeon pose (eka pada Rajakapotasana)

For reflection:

- Pranayama practices

- Meditation

What does your yoga practice look like at the start of a new year?

I took some time off over Christmas to recharge and connect with family and friends. After not doing yoga for a week, my body felt achy and stiff, so I began incorporating some gentle stretching which felt amazing! I created a yoga class for my library, designed for those easing back into movement after a break. Sometimes our bodies need a gentle, mindful approach to reintroduce yoga, and this class is perfect for that.

If there's one message or mantra you'd encourage us to carry into 2025, what would it be?

A quote I like to end my classes with - ‘Our bodies live in the past, our minds in the future when these two come together this is yoga’.

A mantra for 2025 - ‘This year, I will nurture my mind, body, and soul with kindness and care.’

How can we stay compassionate towards ourselves when we stray from our intentions?

Remember we are gifted the opportunity to start each day anew! Celebrate each small win, speak to yourself as you would a good friend, let go of guilt and start again, reaffirm your why. Repeat the mantra - I am doing my best and that is enough.

What's one principle that you believe everyone should embody in the coming year?

Authenticity- Commit to living in alignment with your true self, expressing your values, and honouring your unique voice.

I love this quote by Mahatma Gandhi- "Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony."

For the first time since January 2023, Saturn changes signs from Aquarius to Pisces. The ringed planet will leave Aquarius on March 29th, not to return for another 29 years. For all of us, this means the next couple months are a time of potential reward for all the lessons we’ve learnt, and integration of the maturation that Saturn in Aquarius has gifted us.

A Year of Profound Growth

After March 29th, you’ll enjoy renewed acceleration and expansion in the life area ruled by Aquarius in your chart. Saturn in Pisces will impart a whole new series of lessons over the next couple years. It’s a year of profound growth for those with planets in Pisces, as Venus will spend an usually lengthy stay in the watery sign from January 28th until May 31st. This is due to a rare Venus retrograde in Pisces from March 2nd until end of April.

Venus Retrograde is a Time for Healing

Many of us are familiar with Venus’s responsibility over love, romance, beauty, and financial abundance, but the luminous planet also offers healing and rejuvenation. Venus retrograde in Pisces is due to be a time of collective healing, and an opportunity to dig into ones personal creativity. For all of us it will be a time to show compassion in family and romantic relationships, as we are offered a chance to access the most evolved expression of the Pisces zodiac sign traits. Congregating together with others in meditation, spiritual endeavours or musical concerts are all wonderful ways to channel the Venus retrograde period for greatest benefit. By the end of May we should arrive with hearts wide open and ready for a dynamic entry of Venus into Aries.

Leveraging Mars Retrograde for Ambitious Growth

Mars stays retrograde until February 24th, after which the fiery planet of focus and determination turns direct in curious Gemini. So for those looking to propel personal goals higher this year, the end of February will offer a cosmic boost to all ambitious endeavours.

The skies are adding in one more planetary event to ensure 2025 becomes the year of lasting transformation: Rahu and Ketu (the nodes of the moon) will change signs mid-May. Rahu will enter Aquarius and Ketu will move into Leo, opening up a new cycle of eclipses that will last until the end of 2026. For anyone with planets in Aquarius and Leo, the latter half of 2025 will be a year of profound emotional change.

Signs Who Will Experience the Most Shifts in 2025?

Pisces, Leo, Aquarius and Cancer, Virgo.

Key Dates to Remember

Saturn moves into Pisces: March 29th

New Year, True You

The dawn of a new year often brings with it the temptation to reinvent ourselves - to adopt new routines, set ambitious goals, and transform into a version of ourselves we think the world expects. But what if, instead of striving to become someone new, we used this moment as an opportunity to return to our truest selves?

At Mauli Rituals, we believe the path to authenticity is not about addition but subtraction. It’s about peeling away the layers of what no longer serves you, so your most radiant and aligned self can shine through. Here is your guide to embracing the theme of "New Year, True You," with mindful practices rooted in Ayurveda and holistic wellbeing.

1. Take Away All That Is Not You

The first step in rediscovering your authentic self is letting go of routines, habits, and expectations that feel inauthentic. Ask yourself: What am I doing because I think I should, not because I truly want to? Perhaps it’s a multi-step skincare routine that feels overwhelming or commitments that leave you drained rather than fulfilled.

Instead, pare back to rituals that nourish you deeply. Can you get the same results using more simple, yet effective products? Can your skincare also become your daily meditation? This was exactly what we created the Supreme Skin Serum to be. A simple yet results-driven formula that allows you a moment of mindfulness and more time for things that matter. By letting go of what feels untrue, you make space for what truly aligns with your essence.

2. Begin Each Day with Morning Meditation

Morning meditation is a powerful practice to align with your inner self before the day unfolds. Just five minutes of intentional breathing or silent stillness can set the tone for clarity and calm. In Ayurveda, mornings are considered sacred - a time when the mind is naturally quiet and receptive.

To enhance your meditation, light a candle or use an aromatherapy balm to create a serene atmosphere. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and let go of distractions. This simple ritual helps you connect with your intentions and approach the day with purpose and balance.

3. Commune with Nature

In our fast-paced, digital world, the healing power of nature is more essential than ever. Spending time outdoors allows us to ground ourselves, reduce stress, and reconnect with the natural rhythms that align with our true selves. Ayurveda teaches us that we are deeply intertwined with the elements, and nature’s energy can restore our own.

Incorporate moments of connection with nature into your daily routine. Take a morning walk in the park, pause to feel the sunlight on your skin, or simply sit quietly in a garden. These small acts of communion bring a profound sense of harmony and help you realign with what matters most.

4. Embrace Movement and Exercise

Movement is a celebration of the body’s vitality. Whether it’s yoga, brisk walking, or gentle stretching, physical activity not only strengthens the body but also clears the mind. Ayurveda views exercise as a way to kindle your internal Agni (digestive fire), enhance circulation, and maintain balance.

Find a form of movement that resonates with you. If the gym feels uninspiring, try sun salutations at sunrise or an energising dance session in your living room. Whatever you choose, let it be joyful and intentional - a way to honour your body and its incredible capabilities.

5. The Power of Self-Massage

Self-massage, or Abhyanga, is one of Ayurveda’s most revered practices - a moment of connection with yourself.

To practice, warm a few drops of oil and use the Skealer to massage gently in long, sweeping motions towards your heart. Pay attention to areas of tension or stagnation, allowing the act to release both physical and emotional blockages. This simple ritual not only revitalises your body but also grounds your mind, reminding you of the strength and serenity within.

The start of a new year doesn’t need to be about creating an entirely new version of yourself. Instead, it can be a journey of rediscovery, of peeling back the layers to reveal the essence of who you truly are. By embracing simplicity, mindfulness, and rituals that resonate with your soul, you step into the year ahead with clarity, authenticity, and purpose.

Here’s to a 2025 filled with balance, connection, and the courage to honour your true self. New Year, True You.

Festive Reset: Ayurvedic wisdom for rebalancing after indulgence

Even the most disciplined will let go a little during the holiday season and that’s as it should be. Part of the joy of Christmas is gathering around a table to eat home-cooked food, but if the portion sizes have left you feeling a little sluggish, no matter. Don’t berate yourself, but instead commit to a few simple rituals to get you back on track.

According to Ayurveda, our Agni - the sacred digestive fire - can become overwhelmed by indulgence, leaving us feeling sluggish, fatigued, or out of alignment. By nurturing Agni and addressing imbalances, we can transition into the new year with vitality, clarity, and calm.

Understanding Agni: The Key to Renewal

In Ayurveda, Agni governs digestion, energy, and vitality. When strong and balanced, it allows the body to function optimally. However, an overload caused by rich foods, lack of routine, or stress can lead to the buildup of Ama—toxins that result in lethargy, bloating, irritability, and dullness - common ailments at this time of year.

The solution lies in nourishing Agni through mindful practices, and balanced nutrition to release toxins and restore your natural energy.

Support Your Agni With Ayurvedic Herbs

Ashwagandha – Adaptogenic Calm & Vitality
This revered Ayurvedic herb helps the body adapt to stress while enhancing energy, focus, and restful sleep. Incorporate Ashwagandha into your daily routine to rebuild resilience and support mental and physical balance after a period of overindulgence.

Triphala – Gentle Detoxification & Digestive Harmony
Triphala, a blend of three powerful fruits, works as a natural digestive tonic. It gently detoxifies, restores regularity, and promotes gut health, helping to cleanse the system and eliminate Ama accumulated over the festive season.

Turmeric – Anti-Inflammatory & Digestive Support
Turmeric’s golden power lies in its ability to reduce inflammation, support Agni, and enhance overall digestion. Its curcumin-rich properties bring warmth, balance, and clarity to both body and mind.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) – Clarity & Calm
Tulsi is revered for its ability to strengthen immunity, clear respiratory pathways, and calm the nervous system. Perfect for rebalancing after a season of indulgence, this herb restores clarity and lightness.

Ginger – Warming Digestive Fire
A trusted Ayurvedic staple, ginger kindles Agni, relieves bloating, and supports metabolism. Whether in food or as a supplement, its warming nature brings balance back to your digestive system.

Begin Your Renewal With Simple Daily Practices

Align with nature’s rhythms and bring balance back into your day with any or all of these simple practices:

Aid digestion with a teaspoon of tri-doshic Triphala taken with a warm glass of milk.

Chew cardamom pods or fennel seeds to aid digestion, freshen breath and strengthen gums.

Engage in daily yoga postures and abhyanga massage using seasonal Spirited Body Oil.

Try breathing exercises such as bhastrika (bellows breath) to get toxins moving out of the system and increase energy levels.

Bring gratitude into your mind and heart ahead of the new year by spending a few minutes each day writing down what makes you truly grateful. Try these journalling prompts if you need help getting started.

Try adding a moment of aromatherapy to each day and welcome in the calming benefits. This will help center your mind ahead of a new year beginning.

The most important thing to remember is that you are exactly where you need to be, doing all that is to be done. Don't waste time berating yourself for what is done. Give thanks, rest up and prepare for a beautiful new year ahead.

As the vibrant warmth of summer fades into cool, crisp days of autumn, you might notice a little more hair shedding. While this seasonal hair loss is quite common, it has deeper roots in both nature’s cycles and Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of holistic healing. By understanding why this happens and how to address the imbalance, you can take steps to support healthy hair growth and reduce shedding during autumn.

Why Does Seasonal Hair Loss Happen in Autumn?

According to Ayurveda, seasonal changes affect the balance of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Autumn, in particular, is associated with an increase in Vata dosha, which governs movement, air, and dryness. When Vata becomes aggravated during the cooler months, it can lead to dryness within the body, especially the scalp, resulting in weakened hair follicles and increased hair loss.

Another contributing factor is the body’s transition from summer’s heat to autumn’s coolness. This shift can affect digestion and nutrient absorption, leading to deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals that support hair health. As a result, hair becomes thinner and more prone to breakage.

Main Causes of Autumn Hair Loss

Vata Imbalance: The dry and rough qualities of Vata weaken hair roots, leading to excessive hair fall.

Nutritional Deficiencies: Digestive changes during the seasonal shift may impair the absorption of vital nutrients like iron, zinc, and biotin—key elements for hair growth.

Stress: Increased stress levels, often associated with busy schedules and seasonal transitions, can trigger hair thinning by weakening hair follicles.

Dry Scalp: The cool and dry air of autumn can sap moisture from your scalp, leading to brittle hair and hair breakage.

Ayurvedic Tips to Prevent Hair Loss and Promote Hair Growth

These foods nourish the body and help support strong, healthy hair follicles, promoting hair regrowth.

The winter months can leave us feeling heavy, bloated, and sluggish, as our body’s natural rhythms slow down. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this buildup of stagnation is linked to Kapha dosha, which governs fluid balance in the body. When Kapha becomes imbalanced, it can lead to water retention, sluggishness, and a feeling of heaviness. This is where lymphatic drainage becomes essential — not only for detoxifying the body but also for restoring energetic balance and vitality.

Lymphatic drainage helps move excess fluids and toxins from tissues, keeping the body’s detox pathways open. When the lymphatic system flows freely, it ensures that your immune system stays strong, your skin remains vibrant, and your mind feels clear. Ayurvedically speaking, this supports the body’s natural Agni (digestive fire) and prevents the buildup of ama (toxins), which can manifest in dullness, bloating, and even sluggish mental clarity.

How the Kansa Skealer Supports Lymphatic Health

Mauli Rituals’ Kansa Skealer Massage Tool, crafted from an ancient metal alloy known for boosting collagen and elastin, is the perfect partner for stimulating lymphatic flow. Its smooth curves glide over the skin, using gentle pressure to encourage circulation, detoxification, and the redistribution of fatty deposits, all of which can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Why Lymphatic Massage Is Good For You, an Ayurvedic Perspective

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health, closely linked to the concept of Ojas, which represents vitality and well-being. Lymphatic drainage helps eliminate accumulated toxins, or ama, preventing imbalances in the body. Regular lymphatic movement is essential for promoting the flow of energy, or prana, which supports digestion, enhances immune function, and balances the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). By incorporating lymphatic massage into your self-care routine, you not only facilitate detoxification but also nurture your Ojas, promoting holistic health and harmony within. This gentle yet effective practice aligns with Ayurvedic principles, allowing for a deeper connection to your body and enhancing your overall vitality.

How to Use Kansa Skealer

To begin, apply oil liberally to your skin, allowing the Kansa Skealer to glide effortlessly. Start at the outer edges of the body, moving in firm, sweeping strokes upwards towards the heart. This motion mirrors the natural direction of the lymphatic system, promoting the flow of lymph fluid. Repeat each stroke 4-5 times per area, working 2-3 times a week for best results.

This Ayurvedic technique helps cleanse the body by encouraging lymph to move towards the lymph nodes, where it can be filtered and purified. Regular practice supports the body’s detoxification process, making you feel lighter, more balanced, and refreshed.

A Ritual for Skin and Soul

More than just a physical massage, this ritual becomes a holistic practice. By integrating lymphatic drainage into your self-care routine, you’re nourishing your skin, boosting your immune system, and reconnecting with your body. With regular use of the Kansa Skealer, you’ll notice a smoother, brighter complexion and a sense of lightness within.
