Gisteren gelanceerd.
Wandelen met Maup. Iedereen kan het.
Meer dan wandelen alleen. Niemand weet meer over wandelen in Den Haag dan ik, en ik weet nog niets over u. Ontspannen, ontmoeten, ontdekken, verrassen. Zullen we wandelen?

Voor iedereen die meer wil dan wandelen alleen.

Open wandelen, netwerken in beweging, terwijl we de fraaiste straten bewandelen of naar de vogels luisteren. Dwars door de de natuur en cultuur van Den Haag* kunt u met mij iedere route op de stadsplattegrond wandelen in alle stilte of met extra informatie, zowel persoonlijk als in groepsverband.

Facebookwandelingen, even goed off line zijn, ook geschikt voor Twitter, Google+, Flickr, Pinterest en Tumblr. (Ik werk nog aan de optie om dat allemaal niet te doen)

De IJzeren Man heeft niets met Iron Man te maken. Het is een recreatieplas onder Den Bosch die ontstaan is rond 1890 door zandafgraving met een stoombaggermolen die de scheldnaam De IJzeren Man had gekregen van de zandafgravers die door deze machine werkloos dreigden te worden. Lees het! Je kunt er heerlijk zwemmen hoewel het nu nog behoorlijk koud is. Het is vrij ondiep, gemiddeld 1,50 m, en warmt dus snel op. Zin in.

De eerste videoclip uit de ruimte. Uit de categorie Astronauten die slim kunnen zingen stel ik u voor aan de Canadees Chris Hadfield. Hij voert David Bowie's Space Oddity uit vanuit het International Space Station. Na vijf maanden nam hij als bevelhebber op deze uiterst toepasselijke muzikale wijze afscheid. Rond deze tijd is zijn afdaling naar de Aarde begonnen, dat duurt vele lange uren.
Hij zong alvast.

Bijna 2 milioen views ondertussen, 1,871,942 exact, 9 uur geleden waren het er nog 531.027. Een echte astronaut die kan zingen maakt extra geschiedenis met Bowie's klassieker ten hemel, vrijwel letterlijk. Luister naar de beelden. Er is een nieuwe dimensie aan Space Oddity toegevoegd. Ik volg Chris Hadfield al jaren als boeiende all-round kunstenaar-astronaut maar deze hoge orde van grote van planetair cultuurmanagement is ronduit geniaal. Geen wonder dat David zelf, de NASA en de Russische ROSCOSMOS bij voorbaat beeld en medewerking toezegden aan dit kosmisch origineel. Dit is geschiedenis voor eeuwen.

You might remember The Human League, but you probably never heard of this song - Rock 'n Roll.

I didn't, until @martynware (remember Heaven 17) raised my attention.

The Human League performed this piece of Rock 'n Roll in 1980. It was part of the Holiday '80 release - a double 7" pack, and I like it. This surely isn't the catchy lollipop sweet smelling synthesized pop of today. This sounds like serious cynical business.

I am, and always have been, a sucker for good electropop. Kraftwerk kickstarted my interest when I turned 15 in the summer of 1980. One year later The Human League's album Dare added an ever dryer touch to the tainted loved musical landscape of the decade. Nowadays it's all over the place, 'lectropop made it.

Hey la hoo.

Mijn moeder is altijd een keukenkoningin met finesse geweest, maar slaat tegenwoordig toch vaker weer het recept na. Ik ben culinair gezien Indisch, dankzij haar.

Ik trof deze constructie in Park Clingendael. De pvc-buis hangt aan de achterkant van de boom, niet vanaf het pad te zien. Het ijzerdraad viel me op, en voor ik het wist trad ik uit het pad. Verbaasd heb ik het van verschillende kanten bekeken. Wat kan dit zijn? Takjes in een 55 mm plastic buis, met bovenaan aan de voor- en achterkant een blokje hout met dubbelzijdig plakband daarop. Waarom? Welk wetenschappelijk onderzoek is dit?

Het vermelde bedrijf, Adviesbureau E.C.O. Logisch, heb ik even gebeld. Uiterst vriendelijk werd me verteld wat dit is: 'Een eekhoornval, maar dan geen echte val'. In de buis worden nootjes gedaan, de takjes zijn er om die op hun plaats te houden. Als een eekhoorn de buis bezoekt zullen enige haartjes op het dubbelzijdig plakband achterblijven. Zo kan men leren in welke delen van het Park de eekhoorns het meest voorkomen. Men controleert de 'vallen' regelmatig.

Ik ben er afgebleven.

AANVULLING (18-4-2013)

Vandaag kreeg ik een berichtje van het adviesbureau. Men linkt graag naar mijn stukje op hun site, met een mooie aanvulling:

Middels dit project wordt getracht de eekhoornpopulatie in kaart te brengen. Deze diervriendelijke methode is uitermate geschikt om met minimale inspanning een goed beeld te krijgen waar deze dieren zich allemaal ophouden. Het ziet er natuurlijk wel een beetje opmerkelijk uit, zo'n buis aan een boom.

Dat die strepen dronken schuin naar rechts lopen is tot daar aan toe, maar dan dat struikelhekje. En verder? Quo vadis Gemeente Den Haag? Voor de ouderen en de slechter ter been en ziende in het algemeen, doe er iets aan! En ik vergeet de touristen, dit is vlak voor Centraal Station. Onbegrijpelijk absurd.

Nautilus, een levend fossiel in de Houtrustbrug

In de Houtrustbrug schuilt op het balkon een oudje, al bijna een eeuw zichtbaar. Een Nautilus zo te zien, van meer dan 200 miljoen jaar geleden. Deze antieke en unieke inktvisschelp, dit exemplaar van ooit, is een zogenaamd levend fossiel. Ze bestaan nog in vrijwel ongewijzigde vorm in de Indische en zuid-westelijke Grote Oceaan.
Het fossiel is wezenlijk niet anders dan van een huidige Nautilus pompilius,
Als enige inktvis met een uitwendige schelp is dit weekdier sowieso een buitebeentje met meer dan 90 armen. Zonder zuignappen! Maar grijpzuiver en pakkend fijn gekarteld. Echter hebben ze slechte / primitieve ogen, zonder lens. In tegenstelling tot hun verre neven en nichten de octopussi. Dat achtpotige weekdieroog is langs een totaal andere evolutionaire weg toch uitgekomen op iets dat sterk lijkt op wat wij als zoogdier mens ook hebben, stereoscopisch scherp kleurenzicht, met een lens en netvlies, onder nogal andere omstandigheden ontstaan. Maar ik dwaal af. De Nautilus is waarschijnlijk meer op geur georiënteerd De enige specialistische armen voor en achter de ogen hebben een olfactorische functie. Focussen op geur.

Er zijn meer zogenaamde levende fossielen, maar dit is voor mij de mooiste.

Ik zou graag willen weten van welk soort steen het helaas ongebruikte prachtige balkon van de Houtrustbrug is gemaakt. Waar komt deze Nautilus vandaan?

Holwortel in Park Sorghvliet

Holwortel

Corydalis bulbosa in Park Sorghvliet - Typische stinsenplant van de bosachtige parken en buitenplaatsen. Alleen in de lente te zien voordat de bladeren aan de bomen komen. In de zomer is er niets van de Holwortel te zien, en is hij gereduceerd tot een onderaards knolletje, dat zoals de naam al aangeeft, hol is.

Stinsenplant is een in Nederland en Duitsland gangbare benaming voor een groep planten die in een regio alleen voorkomt op oude landgoederen, boerenhoven, pastorietuinen, voormalige stadswallen en dergelijke, en hun natuurlijke verspreidingsgebied veelal veel zuidelijker hebben.

Het is maar een heel erg klein bloemetje hoor, maar ze bedekken in groten getale de bosachtige bodem van parken en buitenplaatsen, en ook slootkanten . Er zijn rood/paarse en witte versies, die wel de zelfde soort zijn dacht ik. Een echte stinsenplant, dus een verwilderde soort die ooit is aangeplant en oorspronkelijk is geïmporteerd uit Midden-Europa in dit geval.

Het is lente! Vandaag om 12:02 overschreed de zon de evenaar van zuid naar noord, dus.

Het verhaal gaat dat je vandaag, op de dag van de lente-equinox een ei op zijn bolle kant kunt plaatsen. Klopt! Maar het kan ook op alle andere dagen van het jaar natuurlijk. Het broodje-~~ei-~~aap-verhaal lijkt gebaseerd te zijn op de gedachte dat er een bepaald hemels evenwicht moet zijn om dit te kunnen bewerkstelligen. Om te bewijzen dat het ook op andere dagen prima te doen is daag ik iedereen uit om het ook eens te proberen, vanaf morgen.

Stop the Google Cyborgs.
Google Glass, or Project Glass as it is literally better known, might be a social time bomb I think. A schism in your eyes, in your face, of mistrust and social data espionage. In my opinion technological forefront companies like the great searcher should not be allowed to alter the way we interact inter-socially by ways of introducing fad gadgets that 'us knowing' tap into everyone in wifi sight. Glass is just the beginning. We should be able to demand certain decent standards,

‘Stop The Cyborgs’ was founded in response to the Google Glass project and other technology trends. The aim of the movement is to stop a future in which privacy is impossible and corporate control total.'

You must have heard of Google Glass, the next step to social visual media interaction, the sleekest form of personal datamining that looks like... a high tech monocular.

The search colossus has brewed up this unwelcome fad in the last years and threw it into the wild recently for American citizens to freely burn $ 1500 and be cool to sponsor this socio-cultural mishap.

I cherish my opinions but love to share the ones of the more descriptive to elaborate on the considerations.

We are already continually tracked though smart phones, online tracking, banking transactions, and CCTV. So why all the fuss about a smart phone on your face?

Google has the marketing power to make acting like ‘Creepy Cameraman’ socially acceptable.Would you have even considered wearing a hidden spy camera or recording conversations a few years ago? Well soon everyone will be doing it and finding you odd for objecting.

There is no way to know if you are being recorded by someone wearing Google Glass or a similar device. This is in contrast to a smart phone where the user must visibly hold the camera up to take a picture or record video. We must therefore assume that we are being recorded at all times(and possibly publicly broadcast) from a low angle where ones face is clearly visible.

Even if the user is not recording video, audio for their own use it may still be being collected and processed in the cloud in order to display contextual information using image, object, face, voice identification and speech recognition. (so called augmented reality) for example.
- Display the G+ or Facebook profile of the person you are looking at.
- Give you reviews of the item you are looking at in a shop.
- Give Google debugging or image recognition training information.

Information about you will not just sit in some database, read only by the security services and bored IT workers but rather will delivered directly to the people you are interacting with for example.
- What is your Klout score?
- Does your face look like someone on the sexual offenders list?
- Do you have any criminal convictions?
- Are your voice patterns correlated with stress and therefore lying?
- What is your relationship status?
- What is your credit rating?
- Map of where you are normally seen.

These concerns go beyond privacy. There are serious consequences for human society. There will no longer be any distinction between the ‘digital world’ and the ‘real world’. People will make decisions and interact with other humans in the real world in a way which increasingly depends on information that Google Glass tells them.

Gradually people will stop acting as autonomous individuals, when making decisions and interacting with others, and instead become mere sensor/effector nodes of a global network. There will be no room for multiple identities, hypocrisy or experimentation. There will be no space in which you can escape your online profile and the system will be controlled by a small group of corporations.

Please note that Google has not yet officially released the details of how Google Glass will work so the above is educated speculation based on public press articles."

Behind the masks?

One of the most intriguing and fascinating songs by Ryuichi Sakamoto's Yellow Magic Orchestra probably is Behind the Mask from way back 1979. It certainly is the best covered.
Eric Clapton famously cited this little known classic on his 1986 studio album, but the first to cover this romantic electric song was Greg Phillinganes in 1985, one of the best Michael Jackson band keyboard players. When Nile Rodgers also started to associate to this jewel from the electrifying land of the rising sun Michael decided to make his own version. Maybe the best.

Chriss Mosdell who wrote the lyrics has said that "I was talking about a very impersonal, socially controlled society, a future technological era, and the mask represented that immobile, unemotional state."

First released in 1979 on YMO's album Solid State Survivor the song was originally used for a Seiko commercial. Behind the mask marks a telltale story of cultural upfront musical interweaving, still. By now Nile Rodgers is the present feature coop on Daft Punk's coming up release these days. Good Times never change. Michael Jackson's version of Behind the Mask might be the best, Nile agrees.

AlunaGeorge - Attracting Flies - and global pop attention

Ik roep het al een tijdje, AlunaGeorge gaat de wereld veroveren, en ik help ze een beetje door dat te blijven herhalen, want... het is zo.
Luister zelf maar. Zodra je 43 seconden luistert ben je verkocht. Het zuigende contratitme en de irri begintoon lossen snel op in een geniale catchy weggezongen bitterzoete poppudding. De rauwe randjes swingen de toon uit. AlunaGeorge, onthoud die naam, of, oh nee, dat hoeft niet, ze worden vanzelf beroemd.

Een wandeling in Meijendel met fijne vrienden Viory en Thijs laat zich altijd goed afdrinken op het terras van de boerderij; www.meyendel.nl , een intelligente url wel. Vraag

Zoo ik iets ben een idee
maar
als Couperus
opeens weer eens
door Den Haag
en uit de stad die nu veel meer is
naar
de duinen
buiten de grachten van zijn gedachten
zou kunnen struinen
tot aan de zee
zou hij daar nog kunnen wennen
en de branding hem herkennen?

Zwijnen, Raven en meer op de Veluwezoom

Met Midas ben ik gisteren naar Dieren getreind, en dan de bossen in richting dieren, om een paar uur te wandelen door het Nationaal Park Veluwezoom. Wild Zwijn, die heb ik slechts één keer eerder in Nederland gezien, van ver. Sinds gisteren kan ik er acht bijtellen, van vrij dichtbij. Helaas niet al te scherp.
We zagen ook Schotse Hooglanders.

Even verderop kwamen we een paar Raven tegen. Wat maken die een keihard apengeluid naast het klassieke 'Rok-wrrrók'. Midas was nogal verbaasd. Had ik maar een redelijk geluidsopnameding bij me gehad. Het geluid van de Raven was zó bijzonder. Ik zag er vorig jaar voor het eerst een paar op de Horsten bij Wassenaar, uniek voor West Nederland. Ze waren daar erg schichtig. Hier in Gelderland konden we puur op het geluid naar de boom lopen waar er twee in zaten, en die onze actie vervolgens luid begonnen af te keuren toen we er eenmaal onder stonden. Na een minuutje krasten ze pas op. We zagen er één, spanwijdte meer dan 1 meter. Maar dat geluid, vooral zéér luid.

Midas merkte later op dat hij het wel gaaf vond om op zijn twaalfde al Raven, Zwijnen, een Vos, Herten en nog zo wat wild te hebben gezien... dan weet je waar je het voor doet, en ik doe het daar niet eens om. Zo'n natuurwandeling is gewoon prachtig, gezond en simpelweg leuk om te doen.

Bij de Carolinahoeve (sinds 1846) hebben we het één en ander aan wandelaarsbrandstof tot ons genomen.

En weer verder door een heel ander soort bos dan we in het westen van het land gewend zijn.

Best vermoeiend... En dan na een paar uur stappen weer huiswaarts.

In het kader van mijn eeuwige zoektocht naar nieuw origineel cool global pop materiaal kwam ik vandaag Rhye tegen.

Prachtig rustig, en het ziet er gelikt uit, naast dat het super fresh klinkt, als vers gebakken brood. Altijd lekker. Geil nummer bedoel ik. Ze komen uit Kopenhagen en Toronto. That's what I call global.

Geen paniek, Emma's Hof is veilig

Eerder berichtte ik over de vermeende mogelijke vervuiling van stadstuin Emma's Hof naar aanleiding van een persbericht van GroenLinks. Vals alarm blijkt volgens een gemeentelijke e-mail aan Emma's Hof. "Uit de resultaten valt af te leiden dat er geen risico's zijn ten aanzien van het gebruik."
