Haven’t heard of Evernote?

Basically its a tool that indexes text in images captured by camera or camera phone and sent into the service. (it does some other cool things too, but that seems to be the main reason why I picked it up.)

You can get a general idea of some of the other functionality from this video.

Chronicle of a Palm Pre that can't make or receive phone calls without the touch pad, qwerty keyboard, and power button all becoming unresponsive requiring the removal of the battery.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE

It is now 7:50 PM about 7 hours after my first Palm Pre died. After much hassle (see below) my original Sprint store was able to replace my first dead Palm Pre with a brand new Palm Pre, which I’m calling, Palm Pre #2.

I must say that once I turned on Palm Pre #2, my new Palm profile setup for Palm Pre #1, immediately kicked in & started updating Palm Pre #2 with all my email address configurations (cool!) & my Google GMAIL contact info (Gmail contacts suck, but this did pull them in). My Facebook settings did not work quite so well, but after entering my password all was well with Facebook too.

My Palm Pre #2 came with firmware version Palm webOS 1.0.2. I’m not going to update to 1.0.3 nor 1.0.4 anytime soon, because I have no idea what killed PP#1 and can’t afford to waste more time if PP#2 dies on me.

UPDATE

I started this article to chronicle a couple important issues with my Palm Pre. The second was apparently a terminal condition for my phone, and as I write this update, I’m trying to find the fastest way to replace my 3 day old phone. Palm phone support kept me on the phone for about 146 minutes through 4 dropped calls, and ultimately told me they would call me back, maybe by tomorrow morning.

Below is the original article and below that is the stream of twitter comments I made while on the phone with Palm for far too long.

In general I am extremely unhappy <strike>happy</strike> with my new Palm Pre. I upgraded from the G1 to the Palm Pre last week, and this is a much much better phone on more levels that I’ll tick off here. In the last 2 days, day 2 & 3 of my ownership I have noticed 2 problems that are somewhat troubling. They have not yet repeated themselves, but I wanted to mention them as I document my initial experiences with the Palm Pre.

The first happened when I attempted to go into camera mode. I tapped the camera application and instead of the rapid fire transition to camera, a function that has been amazingly fast thus far, the application seemed to hang as it started up. I was unable to take a picture as the viewer never showed up on the screen. It took some effort to close the application as well, which kept going from full screen to a tab / page view. Finally it ended and no more issues since (that happened yesterday).

The second was a death sentence apparently<strike>more problematic</strike>. I missed a call that went to voice mail. I tapped the notification at the bottom of the screen indicating the voice mail existed, it dialed my voice mail and then my screen went black. Nothing I could do could awaken the screen. The voice mail played, but I could not tap any buttons or work the voice menu. The speaker worked but the screen and the qwerty keyboard were both dead. I attempted to power down the phone, but that button was dead also, so was the volume button.

So mid stuck-call, I had to figure out how to remove the battery cover, something not mentioned in the users guide that I could see.

It involves pushing a button at the bottom of the phone then plying the back cover off despite the fact that it bent in an odd way that made me fear the cover would break. Fortunately it did not break and the slight bend did not alter the shape of the cover permanently.

Then I pulled on the plastic tab to remove the battery. That also was an unintuitive experience with no guide.

Tip pull away from phone, not down nor up, the plastic tab is NOT attached to the battery, just used to lever the battery out.

Super Troubling Palm Pre Failure

After I reset the device, I attempted to dial my voice mail again. All the fuss with the phone made it impossible to get my message. When I went to the keypad and hit the voice mail button again, my screen and keypad went dead AGAIN!

This time the voice mail system hung up on me after it timed out. Even after it hung up, my phone was still dead, so I removed the battery again to reset the phone.

Question – Is there a reset button on the Palm Pre? Haven’t found it yet, but I hope so! Partial Answer – apparently there is, but it deletes lots of information from the device, still do not know where it is.

In the comments section of this Engadget article you’ll find some other complaints from other users

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/07/palm-pre-trouble-roundup/

Now, keep in mind the restarting of the Pre takes about 1 minute and 45 seconds. This is normally not a big issue, because I usually only restart it once a day, if that, but having to restart it twice in a 10 minute period, well. it gave me the time to write this silly 550+ word article.

Does the Palm Pre support Audible.com?

So far I don’t know but think it should work. I was told that the Pre supported Audible at CES in January.

When I look on Audible, it doesn’t list Palm as a brand, but if you go to PDA, you will find PalmOS listed. But the PalmOS is not the same as the Palm WebOS I believe, and I just don’t know yet, but after I get this slow itunes thing figured out, I’ll be testing Audible next.

I did some checking on PreCentral and the long and the short of the story from the long forum thread is that

the Palm Pre and Audible do not currently support each other.

There is an emulator that allows you to run the old Palm OS on your Pre, but that does not work with Audible either for many users

I saw a couple users that were able to get this to work, but its the activation required by Audible Manager that causes this to fail for most users, plus the emulator known as ‘Classic’ costs $29.95. If you have palm apps already, you may want to plunk down $30, if you are just looking for an Audible solution skip to step 4, which will save you $10 and make all of your audible books functional on any device that plays mp3 files.

The theory that linking Audible to your itunes might make it work, does NOT work

The only workaround that I found in the forums that DOES currently work is converting your Audible files to normal mp3 files using SoundTaxi Platinum cost $19.95 (they do offer a –> download link for exe file -> free trial download but it only converts the first 90 seconds, still it does prove that it works before you buy. I’ve tried a few programs like this in the past that did not work/convert at all, so I was happy to see that this program DOES work. )

SoundTaxi Platinum CAN convert an Audible .aa format to mp3 so that it can then be played on any of your devices.

It also converts the following formats

Convert your audio and video at one click with an easy to use software created with you in mind. The SoundTaxi simple and intuitive design will let you concetrate on your music and movies, instead of technical details.
Easily convert DRM protected music and movie files and various audio/video files to unprotected MP3, MPEG4, CD,
iPod and other MP3 player file formats at high speed and CD quality - legally.
SoundTaxi unprotects and converts music and movie files from:

UPDATE

Forgot to include the final source from Precentral that helped get me in the right direction, it came from user quest1772, who stated

I called audible and they assured me they were working on it and expected the app should come out in about two months. for the short term I bought ‘soundtaxi‘ and converted a few books to mp3’s (it takes as long as the track is to convert). This creates a 6 hour mp3 with no bookmarks but the fast forward goes really fast when you hold it down so I can get to where I was in less than a minute, the only problem is now I have to remember where I was or leave the music app open.
edit: also tried the classic+audible air route and crashed my phone. i wouldn’t say that is a viable option unless i did it wrong

I have been giving demonstrations of WordPress as a Content Management System for several months which includes a demo of Artisteer and the first question that is always asked is, “Does Artisteer work on a Mac?”

Now the answer is YES! Artisteer does work on Macs.

Better yet, existing Artisteer users already know that when you purchase a license, that license will receive free upgrades for a year. I have personally created almost 100 WordPress themes since purchasing Artisteer last fall, and I have significantly benefited from many many upgrades to the software. This latest upgrade ads more Avatar support for WordPress, ads support for Dot Net Nuke and past upgrades provided support for Joomla & Drupal templates and much much more.

here’s the latest news release from Artisteer about the Mex Mac Capability

Artisteer for Mac (Beta) has arrived!
Artisteer 2.2 for Mac (Beta) is now available by clicking here. Couple interesting facts:

Artisteer for Mac joins the family of products based on cross-platform .NET framework known as Mono.

Artisteer might be the first product for Mac OS utilizing the ribbon interface first introduced in Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows.

Technical notes and known issues for beta testers:

Artisteer for Mac runs on Intel based hardware with OS X version 10.5 (Leopard).

Artisteer for Mac requires X11 which is usually installed by default on OS X 10.5.

Artisteer may require approx 1 minute to start the first time after installation.

The "Open" and "Save" dialogs display Windows style folder structure and may require additional navigation to desired Mac folders.

The top Mac menu bar does not offer an option to quit Artisteer. Use the Artisteer menu, keyboard shortcut ‘Command’+'Q’, or the red window close button to quit.

Keyboard shortcuts stop working after clicking anywhere within the web design preview area.

Certain amount of instability and limitations (as above) are expected due to limitations of the current Mono framework 2.4.

There is a slight chance that your Mac computer may freeze when using Artisteer (this happened once in our tests). Please save all your work often in case you need to reboot your computer.

Customers who purchased an Artisteer license can use it on both PC and Mac computers (one each) during the beta period. An official release date of the Mac version will be planned after receiving detailed issue reports from our beta testers and determining how much work is needed to resolve those issues.
Please send feedback and report reproducible issues to our support via the Contact Us page.

Artisteer version 2.2 update
We are releasing a new update to Artisteer 2.2 to resolve a few recent issues reported in the previous version 2.2 Beta.

Artisteer: Added "Options" button in the export dialog.

Artisteer: Added DotNetNuke Skin export announced below.

Artisteer: Fixed a bug with the font size being altered by changing Articles -> Line Height.

WordPress: Improved compatibility with Avatar List plugin.

Joomla: Resolved custom footer not showing up.

Joomla: Resolved centered menus not shown correctly.

Joomla: Resolved a problem with the text "’30′, ‘height’ => ‘30′ near h2" showing on some pages.

Joomla: Fixed incorrect path to spacer.gif in script.js file in Joomla templates.

Drupal: Fixed an issue with broken image appearing instead of a logo uploaded in Drupal.

The new version 2.2.0.17297 can be obtained by clicking here and may become the officially released version 2.2 after additional testing.

If you are getting an error that states that the Music Assistant from Palm designed for the Palm Pre is ‘Unable to find a compatible desktop music application’ then you likely do not have itunes installed on your machine.

The Palm Pre Music assistant does not work with Windows Media Player.

That said, if you are an itunes lover, you should be happy because Palm found a great way to get access to itunes and you will have a lot of functionality syncing up your itunes collection to your Pre.

Problem Solution

Simply download itunes from Apple (free download that only requires your email address). Install the application.

If you do not want itunes to be your default player, make sure you uncheck these boxes during installation

Be warned the itunes installation is long and slow. Its not like installing Microsoft Office or Vista upgrade slow, but for a music player it is ridiculously slow and long, even on a new, fast machine.

Even AFTER you install itunes, it still has to be configured! Watch out for this gem, sure to ruin your day if you are not expecting it and just hit the next button repeatedly through the itunes configuration process.

And when the program finally does run for the first time, it tries to find my music files, but doesn’t allow me to tell it where I keep my files (portable hard drive) it just assumes I keep them in ‘My Music’, plus it then goes and cycles through every image and movie file on my hard drive.

If you have gigabytes of music, as I do, be prepared for a bit of a wait on this step too. (understandable having to wait on this part, but the other steps and slowness gets you just annoyed to forget that this one is probably normal) I have been buying cd’s for almost 20 years so I have hundreds of gigabytes of music .. . I started downloading itunes at 2:02 pm, by 2:28 pm I was at this stage and waiting for thousands of songs to get processed into my itunes installation.

Update at 3:04 pm it was still trying to process, I noticed that for about 5 minutes, itunes just seemed to lock up, wouldn’t minimize, showed no status, I thought it had crashed and then it started up again, processing more songs. (1 hour and waiting for music!)

OK, at 3:20, I noticed that it seemed to have ‘found’ all of my music, but its now converting some of those files that are in .wma file format. (I didn’t approve this, and have no idea how long it will take, or even if I want these files converted, might be garbage or something for all I know.)

Don’t expect to have music in your Pre quickly!

Correction, If you have a Pandora account, you can get the Pandora App and start listening to music via Pandora very quickly, but that is not exactly YOUR music. So if you must have music now, listen to Pandora while Apple itunes wastes a couple hours of your computer cycles.

Once you FINALLY have itunes running, this is the screen you should see to start the actual import process of music to your Palm Pre.

Congratulations You Survived!

The Palm Pre is excellent at managing contacts even though they limit themselves largely to the pitfalls of working with gmail and facebook (as opposed to say Outlook, Plaxo or Linkedin, much better professional sources for contacts), but the music side of this device is a little over looked in its initial release.

Returning the G1 for the Pre

Over the last couple weeks I have tried to use the G1 sometimes known as the g-phone, google phone, or the first phone running on the android OS from t-mobile. All in all, the phone was not that great in the performance (speed) department and contact management, specifically imports/export functionality from Outlook or any desktop application through gmail to the phone was TERRIBLE.

The available aps for the G1 were fantastic, and the phone did grow on me, even after I decided to return it, but the contact management issues were a non-starter, the device slowness moving from ap to ap, and the very poor camera (shutter speed terrible and the button didn’t really work right when you pushed it to click a picture) were all serious issues that I could not look past.

So instead, I picked up service from Sprint and got a Palm Pre. (at&t is not an option for me because they stole $1,000 from me in 2000 and I won’t do business with them ever again, if I can help it).

The Palm Pre out of the box was a great experience. Connections have been much much easier to manage, and I’m very very impressed by many features of this smaller, lighter phone with a keyboard that I can type on with one hand if I choose (something that was not an option with the G1).

Battery ‘Life’ – Battery Optimization Tips

When I first got my Pre it was half charged out of the box. I was porting a phone number from T-Mobile over to Sprint and the activation was delayed by about 5 hours (can take up to 72 hours). Anyway during that time the phone was cycling through a 5, 3, 5, 3 activation attempt cycle. After it activated, I was using it heavily to get things set up. Long story short, the battery didn’t seem very strong out of the box.

I let it charge all night long, and will see how it does now that it has reached full. That said, having talked to one of the engineers/product designers at CES, I was given the distinct impression that this would be a device that needs regular if not constant charging. So I also went out looking for some tips on how to improve the battery life, by optimizing some settings.

I found 3 tips that seemed relevant to me. The first two are below:

Turn on Wi-Fi. Sounds unintuitive, right? Well, the Pre doesn’t have the greatest Sprint reception of anything we’ve ever tested, and it actually has a relatively power-efficient Wi-Fi radio. When the Pre’s Wi-Fi is running, it uses Wi-Fi rather than 3G to make Internet connections. So connecting via Wi-Fi saves battery rather than wasting it.
Change your e-mail settings. By tapping on the upper left corner of the screen in the e-mail program, you can pop down a menu that lets you change e-mail preferences. For accounts where you get relatively little mail, set them to push. But for accounts where you get an e-mail every five minutes or more often, set them to check every 15 minutes. That will save battery.

Source ExtremeTech.com

The third I found in a forum on Pre’s and it recommends turning off the GPS locator when you are not using the GPS functionality. Thing is I have no idea where to do that!

So after I finish this quick article, that will be one of the next things I look for, along with an application for the Pre that takes screen shots!

Other businesses take note, if you want a foot traffic draw, add wifi to your location. I stopped here just for the connection and spent a little money that I wouldn’t have otherwise spent.

But when I actually went to publish this article, I found out that I had to pay to connect to McDonald’s WiFi. So I guess that means I stopped at McDonalds for nothing. Next time, I’ll drive the extra block to Panera Bread company where the connections are still free and McDonalds can miss out on my money.

I purchased a new G1 on Friday. My phone has pretty much been dead to me since. I was debating on getting a PRE from Sprint (new carrier for me) or getting a G1 from T-Mobile my preferred carrier. I ultimately decided to opt for the G1. It had most of the functionality I was looking for, it was on my T-Mobile plan so no need to kill a contract, and the plan pricing seemed right.

BUT

I rapidly learned that the G1 kind of sucks (seriously, not an anti-fan boy statement or anything).

It can only import contacts via GMail and Gmail contact import definitely does suck. Here’s why, it maps all of your contact fields to a text note field in gmail.

ergo if you have an email address in an email field, it gets dumped in the notes field. If you have a phone number in a phone number field, it gets piled in the notes field too. If you have an address, zip code, cell phone etc in their respective fields, Gmail does not provide mapping to send it to the Gmail fields it just dumps everything into a generic notes field. In fact, all in the SAME generic notes field.

That might be OK, if you have say, 20 or 50 contacts. Pain in the ass, but ok.

But I have 1,600 contacts. I’ve been around awhile and have done a lot of business with a lot of people over the years, not to mention my social networking contacts. There is no way in the world that I can go into Gmail and start copy pasting text out of a note field into the actual data field Google should have been able to map to.

So today is Sunday, 48 hours after I bought my new phone. I can’t call anyone with the dumb phone. And I do use the word dumb in a literal way. The G1 is no smart phone, it has been dumbed down due to Gmail. So today, I’m boxing everything up and returning it to TMobile for a refund. T-Mobile my favorite carrier is not really to blame here (other than approving a PDA smart phone for their line up that can’t import any phone numbers).

But I’m going to have to take my business elsewhere on this one. I have lost 2 days with the phone, and missed a couple important calls as well. Plus, the goofy ear bud that jacks into the usb slot on the bottom of the phone is almost impossible to hear through.

Oh, and T-Mobile sold me a G1 with a version number of 1.0 as opposed to the more currently available 1.1 or 1.5. The hardware is the same, but the firmware is different. The big difference is that I CAN NOT update my own firmware. There’s an update out there, but I can not access it through the phone because 1.0 does not literally have the ‘update’ button deep down in settings. This means I have no on screen keyboard, no video recorder and who knows what else.

No phone, no address book, static generating ear buds, no ‘update’ button –> Phone Return.

For what its worth I do like the interface, the keyboard is not as comfortable as my old treo 700, but not bad. I seem to recall having a keyboard adapter for an old old palm pilot years back that felt exactly the same as the G1. From a tactile perspective, the G1 keyboard is not bad, its just a little dated (by about 10 years).

Oh and by the way if you need technical support from T-Mobile for the G1, you have to say ‘Blackberry technical support’ in the automated menu to actually get to the PDA department of t-mobile which services the G1 too. (This is what a t-mobile tech support person told me) The phone menu system has not yet been configured to respond to ‘G1 Problems’, ‘G1 techsupport’ ‘G1 help’ etc.

Monopoly power wants my contacts

I also wanted to mention that it trouble me a bit that I HAVE to upload my contacts to Google. They are a monopoly after all and already monitor almost every website I visit. Now through their G1 phone, they can monitor all the calls I make, not to mention the emails I send. I’m a former signals intelligence analyst and understand the principals of gleaming information from an analysis of communications node. Frankly, letting them get their hands on 2 more nodes (contacts and calls) is a little troubling. People would be up in arms if Microsoft forced you to upload all of your contact information into one of their databases, can’t understand why people let that slide with Google.

Google Can’t Even Export its own Data from Gmail Successfully

One of the suggestions I received from tmobile tech support involved the concept of exporting some contacts from Gmail into a csv format, so that I could then use the csv column headings to manually update the columns of my own csv file. So I tried exporting a single contact to get the file headers.

I used my wife’s contact info, which included home and work addresses.

Google’s exported file failed to export the city, state and zip code of the addresses for home and work. So even if I use these headings, to manually construct my own CSV Google will probably strip out this very important information.

Theoretically its possible to record your teacher or professors words during a lecture and have dragon transcribe that to text, but the program wasn't built for that so be prepared to channel your inner geek and do some work to make this happen. It may not work for everyone!

This is the question I recently received from a viewer on YouTube. Can Dragon transcribe a Professor’s lecture using a pocket recorder device?

The answer is maybe, if you jump through a few hoops, but the software does not make the claim that it can do this.

Here’s my more in depth answer explaining the maybe a bit more….

This version of the program is only intended for a single voice. With version 10, you might be able to have some level of success if you setup a profile exclusively for your teacher/professor. You would have to record the lecture, then go through and make corrections in the program to help train dragon to recognize that voice, train it to recognize that voice through your voice recorder, and train it to recognize the voice from what ever distance you are sitting at. (the better the sound the better the transcription, so if you sit in a different location, if people talk a lot or make noise, or if your instructors voice changes (uses a microphone/speaker system one day and not the next) you might run into complications.

All in all this program isn’t intended for this purpose yet, but if you want to get your geek on and see how to make it work, I think there is potential there. Expect to play with it quite a bit, . . . (might be more fun than taking notes and studying ;) )

So this would be one of those situations where if you try to make this tool work in this environment, you may waste some time and money, but if you find a way to be successful, you could save a lot of time!

This evening I’m working on or from a mind map on a lake in North Carolina. I work from Lake Wylie in my own wifi cove with a covered fishing dock. A high top bar serves dual purposes for serving drinks and serving as my desk. I recently installed a pull down projector screen on the dock, and have moved my portable projector outside tonight to work from a mind map that I created with MindManager a few days ago.

The unique setting tonight with a thousand frogs chiming in their opinions about topic changes juxtaposed with the setting where the map was created made me pause. I created the mindmap last week in the Nevada desert in Laughlin. I worked with my friend Joe Klein on a brainstorm evolved into a business plan upgrade. We worked from his home in Laughlin where I used the projector to display the map from his dining room table onto the vertical blinds that cover the sliding glass doors to his patio and hot tub.

The mindmap in the picture is of course the default map with MindManager 8, the map I’m working on in reality is top secret!

Going from the desert to a lake in North Carolina is definitely two examples of the extreme. In the past I’ve worked on planes, in conference rooms, at a soccer field and a McDonalds. Brainstorming, a function that is one of MindManager’s strengths, is definitely the type of activity that can work well when you place the participants outside the box. Its not required, but can produce some interesting results. So where is it that you mindmap? Do you use that location exclusively? Do you mix it up and if so do you mix it up on purpose or just by chance?

I ask the question mostly because I’m curious and partly because I’m curious if the location drives better results or hinders results (like when the sun glares down on a screen outside, or when the mosquitoes get to thick on your projector screen or when the sun melts the silicon in your laptop back into sand particles in the desert).

UPDATE AS OF MARCH 24, 2009: Hi Everyone - a quick update as of Tuesday, March 24. We are almost ready to release the 10.1 download builds for English Preferred ad Standard, but we are still working out a couple issues with our download process. Once we resolve any outstanding issues, we will move the download pages into our production Web environment. At this point, it looks like that will be tomorrow, Wednesday. I will continue to provide updates as the become available. Peter

Personally, I can’t wait, and I know a lot of other Dragon users and people that have purchased Dragon for a new laptop or computer only to find that it wasn’t yet supported will also be happy to get this software up and running. The bottom line is that it is great software and definitely helps with productivity, but launching it last summer with out 64 bit support was a strategic mistake as retailers and manufacturers were resetting the last of the 32 bit Vista OS’s off the shelves and out of the stores and replacing them with more powerful 64 bit machines.

I write tutorials, white papers, and reviews of Dragon. I write them because I truly think the software is useful for many many people. I consider myself something of a product evangelist with this product because I use it myself and it does help. I’m glad that the last 7-8 months of grief are almost over so I can get back to doing what I do best with this software, showing it off and showing how it can help people like the kids in my wife’s classroom. She teaches fourth grade in a title I school and several of the children either don’t have the physical capability to write or in some cases they have mental disabilities that make the obstacles of the writing process almost insurmountable. Dragon helps them get over that barrier and keep up with the other kids in their class, in their grade, and more. If nothing else it helps them to avoid falling further behind.

I use it for the productivity boost. That boost can help a capable person do more and it can help a person with less capability do more as well!

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 will receive a Vista 64 bit OS upgrade by the end of March 2009. This is the information that we found on the Nuance website after Peter Mahoney of Nuance left a comment here following one of our articles about 64 bit os rumors.

Now,I normally don’t copy and paste FAQ’s as there is typically not an entire FAQ that is filled with important information. However, in this case the entire FAQ is pretty important and I’m positive will answer a lot of question for a lot of Dragon Naturally Speaking Users.

We’ve received a lot of comments and questions about the upcoming release of Dragon 10 that supports Windows Vista 64. I’ve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions here and included the answers to those questions. If I’ve missed something, please let me know (I’m sure you will…)

Peter

Update on Dragon for Windows Vista 64 — Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When will Dragon NaturallySpeaking supports Windows Vista 64 bit operating systems?
A. Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 10.1 will start shipping by the end of March 2009. This release of the software adds support for Windows Vista 64-bit operating systems. In addition, this version fixes some bugs that were identified in Dragon version 10.

Q. Which editions of Dragon will be released first?
A. Dragon Standard, Preferred and Professional Version 10.1 will be released by the end of March in English. Other editions (including Medical and Legal) and additional languages will be released over the next few months. Please check back here for additional detail.

Q. How will I know when it is available?
A. We will update this blog and our website when Dragon 10.1 is available.

Q. How much will it cost to upgrade?
A. Registered users of Dragon 10 are eligible for a free download of version 10.1. Special upgrade pricing will be available for customers of previous versions of Dragon for a limited time.

Q. Is this a patch release or a full release?
A. Dragon 10.1 is a full release. That means that a full installation is required to upgrade to version 10.1.

Q. I don’t have Vista 64, do I need this release?
A. Dragon 10.1 works on both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. The primary new functionality for Dragon 10.1 is support for Windows Vista 64. In addition, Dragon 10.1 fixes a number of bugs that were identified in Dragon version 10.

Q. Can I download the upgrade?
A. Yes. The download will be available for registered users of Dragon 10. Because this is a full release, the image size is quite large (almost 2 GB), so we only recommend downloads over high-speed Internet connections.

Q. Can I get the upgrade on a DVD?
A. Yes. We will make DVDs available for upgrade customers. There will be a small shipping and handling fee for the DVD.

Q. Will Dragon 10.1 work on windows XP 64?
A. Dragon 10.1 is not supported on windows XP 64. The only 64-bit operating system that was tested during our quality assurance process was Windows Vista 64. While it may install and operate on windows XP 64, we do not recommend that you attempt to do this since we cannot support that configuration.

Q. Will Dragon 10.1 work on Windows 7?
A. We have tested Dragon 10.1 on the current beta release of Windows 7 and it appears to operate adequately. However, since Windows 7 is beta software, we cannot support these configurations.

A couple years ago I was introduced to a very interesting mind mapping program called Topicscape. The program is rather unique in that it provides a three dimensional landscape view of a mind map of information. That was version 1 and I worked with the software up through about version 1.5x beta if memory serves.

Now Topicscape Pro Beta 2.0 is on line. The new version has a number of new features driven by user feedback that include but are not limited to:

An improved tag cloud

Capability to customize the Home view position to your own taste

Another zoom option

From a strictly mind mapping perspective one of the things that is very cool about Topicscape is that it allows you to refocus your perspective on the entire landscape by changing any given topic into the ‘central’ topic of focus.

Navigating the map itself has the look and feel of flying through a video game interface similar to something like Entropia or SecondLife (without all the crazy looking avatars).

The program also runs on a database essentially, which gives it more horsepower and potential than most mind mapping programs that are more common in this software category. In many ways despite the look and feel this is a seriously powerful mind mapping tool for people with seriously complex sets of information or knowledge to classify, map and categorize.

If you are looking for a unique mind mapping experience, or if you are finding that more conventional mindmapping programs are not enabling you to see the real level of complexity of the information you are working with in a single glance, or restrict you too much in viewing things from a single perspective, I highly recommend you try Topicscape. There is both a Pro and Basic version as well as an education version. You can typically try the program with a free 30 day trial as well.

I’ve seen a number of reports and rumors flitter through in Google alerts over the last few days that seem to incorrectly hint that Nuance now supports this capability. Unfortunately, these seem to be false and inaccurate.

Nuance has not released any press release or change in their support pages that would indicate that they have started supporting this growing segment of computers users, especially those people that have purchased a new laptop in the last few months.

I look forward to the day when they will support this, but unfortunately that day is not yet here.

Sometime back I was first introduced to Mindjet connect under MindManager version 7. Under that account I received a trial account to connect. At the time, I did not use the account. It was in the early days and none of my partners were using connect and so there was no one for me to connect with.

Its the peril of cloud computing and social networks. Sometimes they need to develop a critical mass before they become useful. Facebook would be a pretty worthless tool if you were the only one there, same goes for Twitter!

This evening, I received an email from Mindjet indicating that my account was going to expire. I’ll admit that I had forgotten about the account, even though I upgraded to version 8 last fall.

When I logged in, I noticed that my Connect account was still registered with my Version 7 license. (Actually, it was a trial version of 7 from a long time ago.)

I couldn’t identify anyway to upgrade my Connect account information so that I could replace my license number with my current license number. But a little digging pointed me in the direction of this message.

About the Mindjet Connect trial account

Mindjet offers a free 30-day trial of Mindjet Connect service. During the 30-day trial, you will be able to invite up to 5 users to your account. We recommend you read the Mindjet Connect Data Sheet here:
http://www.mindjet.com/pdf/us/mjc_datasheet_en.pdf
Please click this link to view tutorials on using Mindjet Connect:
http://www.mindjet.com/resources/tutorials/mindjetconnect/default.aspx

Promotional offer:

All customers who purchase a new license, or upgrade to MindManager Pro 8 between November 11th and December 31st, will receive a complimentary 6 month subscription to Mindjet Connect service. Your MindManager 8 license key is also the activation key for your free 6-month Mindjet Connect subscription account. The following steps must be followed to activate your free Mindjet Connect account.
1. Install MindManager 8 for Windows
2. On the MindManager 8 toolbar, click on the Connect tab.
3. Click “Create Account”
4. Click the link “Extended Mindjet Connect Promotion”
5. Enter in your MindManager 8 license key to validate your account
(to locate your license key, click on the Tools tab and select “About MindManager”)
For more information on this promotion, please click here: http://www.mindjet.com/promotions/mindmanager/mm8upgrade.aspx

     Please note:
The license key used to activate the Connect account can only be used once. The first person to successfully register the account using the MindManager 8 license key becomes the account owner. The account owner is responsible for adding/removing users, and sets each users access level.

Apparently, I could sign up for a complimentary 6 month subscription to Mindjet Connect based on my version 8 account. But I suspect that I have to actually let my account from version 7 expire as there is no way to update the account information.

So I’m going to give that a try and finally make the Connect plunge and see how this tool can be used with MindManager.

By the way, it costs about $10 a month normally for a Mindjet Connect account, or $120 per year.

Release date: December 10, 2008
Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10® brings a voice-activated dimension to Mindjet’s MindManager® 8 helping individuals to save time, conquer information overload, and be more effective.

London UK, 10th December 08, Mindjet, the leading provider of applications for mind mapping and interactive visual collaboration and Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech solutions, today announced the release of the breakthrough productivity application, VoxEnable(TM) that delivers ‘hands-free’ mind-mapping to the desktop.

In an innovative collaboration Mindjet’s MindManager 8, the market-leading mind-mapping tool, has been combined with Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10®, the world’s best-selling speech recognition software, to bring a new voice-activated dimension to mind-mapping, liberating individuals and helping them save time, conquer information overload, and be more effective.

"Mindjet and Nuance are recognised software innovators in their respective markets so by bringing the two technologies together with our VoxEnable(TM) application we have created a powerful productivity tool that is now completely voice-enabled," said Ian Bourne, of Citnexus, the partner that developed VoxEnable. "MindManager is used by more than 1.5 million people today including professionals, educators and home users for brainstorming, developing plans, creating presentations, and accomplishing a limitless number of other tasks. By enabling all your commands through Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 users can capture, organise, and communicate information without having to type it using a PC keyboard."

The Dragon voice-enablement engine delivers what matters most in speech-recognition software - 99% levels of accuracy at three times the speed of most typists and unrivalled ease of use. To begin building a mind-map a user issues the instruction ‘new topic’ or ’start brainstorm’ then the software tool starts building the map based on the voice-commands. Over 150 voice-enabled functions have been incorporated into this release and users can transcribe and create MindManager 8 visualisations which can be manipulated, scrolled, scaled, zoomed, printed and exported by voice. Text can be dictated directly into topics with formatting, editing and search capabilities.

"Speech technology with mind-mapping is going to be a potent productivity combination. Imagine never having to scribe your thoughts and ideas down again but instead ‘energise’ the way ‘brainstorms’ or planning meetings are conducted, said Rob Furnivall of Mindjet UK "Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10’s near-perfect accuracy and easy-to-use interface feeds into the Mindjet’s feature-rich MindManager 8 visualisation tool to deliver a unique experience that helps you manage ideas and information more smartly."

MindManager 8 is the latest incarnation of the award-winning productivity tool that allows you to map your ideas and information visually, starting with a central topic surrounded by subtopics arranged on lines, or "branches." The map is a visual diagram that imitates the creator’s thoughts, with the interactive benefits of embedded data, live hyperlinks, collaboration capabilities, and much more.
MindManager is an indispensable fifth productivity application, along with the word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and e-mail. MindManager 8 integrates and augments with all of these applications, so you can capture, organise, and act upon limitless ideas, data and knowledge without ever leaving your mind map.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred gives businesses and advanced PC users the power to create documents, reports and emails three times faster than most people type through voice commands. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 allows users to surf the Web or dictate and edit in Microsoft Word and Excel, Corel WordPerfect and most other Windows-based applications. Commands can be dictated into a handheld device when away from a PC or using a Bluetooth microphone. A high-quality headset is included. Pricing and Availability Prices start at £129. More information on the various versions of both MindManager and Dragon software, plus special pricing for education and charity can be found on the Citnexus website www.citnexus.co.uk.

For a couple years now, I have been looking forward to the day when I could power MindManager with my voice. I could think it, speak it, and it would be mapped!

A couple years back, I picked up on Dragon Naturally Speaking 9, then upgraded to version 10. Neither version plays nice with MindManager 5, 6, 7, or 8!

Fortunately, a great little company has come up with a cheap solution to bridge that gap and the software is called VoxEnable.

Now, I sat down a week ago and created a series of videos showing how VoxEnable made it possible to use Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 with MindManager 8. It worked beautifully.

Unfortunately, I had my video/audio recording settings cross wired, and the audio of my voice didn’t make it into the video. Today, I finally got around to making those videos. They are a little low tech as I created them on the airplane coming out here. :)

That itself was a fun little experiment. I wanted to see how the airplane sound quality might impact Dragon Naturally Speaking. (End result, no impact at all, it worked great).

The first video is above, and I will have some more videos to follow this as I get a chance to publish them this week, so don’t forget to subscribe to our site if you haven’t already!

If you have a lot of documents already written on your hard drive, or if you copy some in later (maybe from a work computer or a shared server or downloading a blog or something) and you want Dragon to be ready to recognize the words in those documents when you speak them you can do this through the Accuracy Center.

Go to Tools>accuracy center and look in the right column for Add words from your documents to the vocabulary. (also notice the increase accuracy from email option below that!)

Now, this will help Dragon ‘contextually’ understand how to put words together, even words that it currently doesn’t know how to write, but some of those individual words will still need to be matched up to your voice. Regardless, this will definitely help and will speed up the amount of time you would need to train Dragon Naturally Speaking otherwise

The setup is not intuitive, but it works. I meant to create a image that identified where the cords were supposed to be plugged in, but somewhere along the line I lost it. (I think I wrote the article and my machine crashed and I forgot to recover the article and original image).

Someone asked me about it on YouTube today, and reminded me that I couldn’t find the article either. I know I wrote it, but couldn’t find it.

So I am publishing this new image of my setup for recording interviews or conversations with skype.

Many times when I use Dragon Naturally Speaking, I write in Dragon Pad. I don’t write in it because it is better than Word, but instead because it does not include all the corrupt formatting code that Word includes. This enables me to copy/past the text from Dragon Pad safely into an html editor (for copy) or into WindowsLiveWriter (for blog articles).

Well, there is a big fat problem with Dragon Pad.

It does not have an auto-save function anywhere that I can find. If your computer crashes (as mine just did, thanks Microsoft Vista), if your Dragon Pad document is not saved, then you are out of luck.

The program just needs a simple auto-save or auto-recovery capability. That can’t be too hard can it?

I have reviewed in the past the limitations of using Dragon Naturally Speaking with MindManager. It works, a bit but it doesn’t work nearly as well as either program work alone. Recognizing this problem a solution has been developed in the form of software that is supposed to bridge the gap and make it possible to run MindManager 8 using Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.

The company, Citnexus, that has created this solution, calls the software VoxEnable.

I’ve just heard about this and written to the company to get more information. In reviewing the shopping cart, it is less than clear how this software sells or ads on to existing configurations.

I for example own both Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 and MindManger 8.

VoxEnable seems to come bundled with upgrades for both Dragon and MindManager and it comes stand alone.

I could be wrong (as I’ll admit I’m confused by the pricing and product descriptions) but I think if you already have both Dragon and MindManager that the software only costs £29.95.

In the meantime, you can play with Dragon and MindManager 8 together without VoxEnable, but you will not get anything productive done. Without a boost, the two just are not good enough alone. I’m hoping that VoxEnable puts them both over the top, but I’ll let you know. . . .

Basically when you say something in dragon, you will see a small yellow text box with the words you just said, appear on your screen before. Then your words will show up in the actual program you are writing in.

The words in the yellow text box are there so that you can see visually that Dragon IS listening to you and doing something. Just like a person that listens to you, it sometimes takes a few seconds for the words to sink in and really take their meaning

So Dragon listens to you and the comprehension takes place a bit behind the scenes after you have spoken the rest of your words. If you say a sentence with 15 words in it, the word that Dragon thinks it hears at word 4 may be different in context after its heard the 13th worth. So Dragon displays in yellow what it initially thinks you said, then later it modifies its own comprehension and writes the most likely word after it has picked up the full context of your words later.

After futzing around trying to make this work for the better part of a year, I finally figured out the magic formula of wire splitters necessary to record both my voice and the voice of another skype caller such that I can capture an interview on my portable MP3 player, a Sony that I also use for voice transcription.

As it turns out, I can actually route both my voice and my caller(s)’ voice(s) through my voice recorder, and then out the head phone jack, I can send both of our voices to my microphone input on my computer so that the caller can hear me too!

I put together this video to show what I figured out. The video is probably about as clear as mud, even though this condensed version is much more understandable than the conversation I had with some poor Radio Shack sales person that sold headset microphones, computers, splitters and more, but had never heard of skype, and this guy was at least 10 years younger than me.

For the record, I have tried multiple software solutions that are supposed to record skype conversations, but they all seem to either be creations of bankrupt companies, they just don’t work, or they work, but they screw up skype. That latter mention relates to my attempts to use the software called Pamela for skype, which seemed to record just fine, but completely broke my skype voice mail.

This may look a little convoluted with $6 Radio Shack wire accessories going every which way like a super models to diet pills but it does get the job done.

About 4 years ago, I had to purchase a home security system out of necessity. I didn’t live in a ‘bad neighborhood’, we had not had any break ins or vandals or any reason to change our lifestyle. We did live in the suburbs and locked our doors, but nothing that sometimes falls under the realm of a home that ‘needs’ a security system.

Well, as the world can do strange things, I found myself in a situation where my company, run by a foreign board, was suddenly not seeing things eye-to-eye with me. At the time I was working as an accountant, and had learned that they were cooking the books. They didn’t want to stop cooking the books, and I was going to aid and abet them, so they decided to play good cop and bad cop with me.

On one front, they tried to negotiate with me to offer me solutions that would put more money in my pocket and allow them to continue doing what they were doing under the guise of investigating the problem.

On the other front, they threatened to have me killed.

So, I bought a security system. It was an impromptu decision.

Now, 8 months later, after I had given lots of evidence to the government, I was no longer a threat (the damage had been done) and the threats stopped.

But it was just a few months later and one of my neighbors had their house burgled. Four months after that, and a more distant neighbor had their house burn down.

We started to realize the value and security that came with having a security system.

As I mentioned that was a few years ago. Times have changed and they have taken a turn for the worse economically speaking. When unemployment goes up, when the US goes into recession, crime goes up. Its a statistic certainty that it will go up, unfortunately.

As we prepare to hit a period of historic changes for the negative in our economy there has probably never been more of a reason for families and homeowners to spend a little bit of money and invest in their own home security system and safety and their own safety.

Some people (stubborn like myself) and blinded by the day to day grind of normal life sometimes don’t quite see the writing on the wall until it is too late. Others, start planning long before the winter arrives and things get cold.

I learned the hard way, but definitely benefited from the lesson.

Consider also, that more people work from home these days. We have a great deal of very important information locked up in very portable computers, hard drives, laptops, and cell phones. For the price of a fancy cell phone, you can have a security system put in to protect your files, your credit cards, your credit, your work computer (and livelihood) not to mention your family and those other mundane possessions that fill up your house.

This month is drawing to a close and I have been writing a novel using Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 and my pocket Sony MP3 Recorder. This setup has worked fantastically for me. Its about 26 hours until the deadline for NaNoWriMo expires (and I’m writing another blog article instead of finishing the contest).

To date I have written 45,022 words. It takes 50,000 words to finish the contest. I’m almost done, and only need 5,000 words to finish. I write that much today in three sessions (10 minutes, 10 minutes and 23 minutes).

I will probably finish tonight before I go to bed. Tomorrow, we are hitting the road for a Thanksgiving drive back from Illinois to North Carolina. I could write quite a bit during that drive, but I’m not sure if I can concentrate with Scooby Doo playing on the kids DVD player in my ear.

Plus, I need to insure that I get the book loaded up into the system and confirmed before the midnight deadline tomorrow night.

Anyway, if you look at my chart above, you will see the ‘lurches’ in my writing activity. That is not because I worked diligently everyday, completing 1700 words per day. No, with Dragon and my poor habits and lack of planning and good distractions from the family, tend to miss a few days and then write several thousand words.

I often feel like I actually start writing after I’ve thought about a chapter or scene or two for a couple of days and then the idea just spills out of me as I write it up in a burst of 2-5 thousand words.

I suspect that the book I’m writing will actually end up being about 250,000 words, so its going to be a long fun winter. If I keep eating as much as I did this Thanksgiving, then I’m going to have to take the summer off to get into shape, or go get lyposuction or a Apidexin prescription or just shoot to become the worlds fattest man.

textbroker.com

PayU2Blog.com

PayPerPost.com

Google Adsense

Below we offer a quick glimpse into the overall benefit that a writer/blogger could enjoy under the different platforms.

Each of these platforms utilizes a very different business model which can benefit bloggers that generate both quality work or large quantities of work. Google’s Adsense program while paying the least for lower quality also offers an almost unlimited amount of potential for bloggers that want to write to the maximum.
