UEFA: RANKED! Every Team in The Champions League Last Eight.

Every one of the remaining eight UEFA Champions League knows, for the most part, the obstacles that remain between themselves and glory.

The quarter-final draw took place Friday, 15th of March at UEFA's Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, throwing up some juicy ties between Europe's best clubs.

Separating the best from the rest, we are left with only eight teams. Heartbreak, shock and disbelief trailed in the wake of the last eight, but why are they so special. Here's a preview of their journey so far.

1. AJAX

The team from Eredivise are having a wonderful season apart from dominating their domestic league, they’ve come through three rounds of qualification, held Bayern Munich to draws twice, and getting a total of twelve points in the group stage. They continued with their great form after the group stages by shocking the football world when they beat then defending champions Real Madrid 4-1 in the second leg of their round of 16 match after a 2-1 loss in the first leg. They’ve won 8 matches in this years competition (including qualifying), lost 1 and drew 5 scoring 29 goals in the process.

2. BARCELONA

The Spanish giants are still on course for another treble. Lionel Messi firing on all cylinders and they are unstoppable both in La Liga and in the Champions League. They are the only team left in this year’s competition without a loss, clearing through the group stage with 5 wins and 3 draws scoring 19 goals. Though they are the favorites to win this year’s competition, they’re doubts about the teams mentality having not made it past the quarter final stage since 2015.

3. JUVENTUS

Serie A is a forgone conclusion to them, racing towards an eight consecutive scudetto. Though that’s not what the team and fans are after, they want that elusive Champions League trophy. They look the part after cruising through the group stages only dropping points to Manchester united and along the way. A Ronaldo inspired Juventus ran riot against Atletico Madrid having lost the first leg 2-0. Juventus are a dangerous prospect in this competition scoring 12 goals so far.

4. LIVERPOOL

Last years finalist seem to have picked up from where they stopped last season before their disastrous final against Real Madrid. Jurgen Klopp's team are fighting on both fronts, with the English premier league title still up for grabs. They navigated themselves through a tricky group stage, where they qualified on the last game of the group stage. They were able to pull the strings in their round of 16 matches against Bayern Munich, running out 3-1 aggregate winners. The presence of Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk make them almost unstoppable in their quest for European glory, scoring 12 goals, winning 4 matches along the way.

5. MANCHESTER CITY

Pep Guardiola’s side are the real deal, breaking past all opponents with ease, winning the League cup and in contention to lift all remaining honors available. They are the most prolific team left in the competition, with 26 goals to their credit. Their round of 16 dismantle of German's side Schalke 04 was a testament and warning shot to the teams left, with a 10-2 aggregate score. They have won 6 matches, with only 1 loss. This team might have been assembled to win the English premier league, but they seem to have a bigger target on their hit list this year.

6. MANCHESTER UNITED

Ole Gunner Solskjaer took over and the magic began, from hopeless wash aways to a dominant team with 14 wins in 17 games. They were never given a chance after the round of 16 draws were made and after the first leg loss, it seemed over, but through sheer effort they surprised the world by going through to the quarterfinal at the expense of a strong Paris Saint Germain side with 3-3 aggregate win on away goals. They have won 4 matches, lost 3 matches scoring 10 goals. They don’t look like it but you can never write them off with Pogba, Rashford, Lukaku and Ole at the wheel.

7. PORTO

Fighting for a domestic double and playing gloriously in the champions league. The Portuguese Liga giants have made it through to this stage against strong odds, with star players Vincent Aboubakar and Marega missing in their round of 16 first leg. They pulled through to the quarterfinal stages on a 4-3 aggregate win over Roma. They’ve scored a respectable amount of goals in this year’s competition with 19 goals scored, 6 wins and a loss. They might not be considered favorites but stranger things have happened in the world of football, 2004 when they claimed the trophy is an example of such.

8. TOTTENHAM

Spurs have found a way to make themselves an household name in European football with great and exciting football. Pochettino’s side made it through the group stages beating Inter Milan to the last 16, before dispatching Dortmund in the round of 16 with a 4-0 aggregate win. On their day, they are un-stoppable with Harry Kane continuously proving his one of the best in the world. They’ve won 4 matches, lost 2 with 13 goals scored. They’re currently going through a bad patch in the league but you can never underestimate Spurs, especially when they are so keen to make history.

It may take a massive exercise in will power, but shut the door and turn off your phone to maximize your time. Instead of being “always on,” plan a break in the day to catch up on email, call people back, hold discussions with serious minded people

4. Take care of yourself:

Be sure to get plenty of sleep and exercise. An alert mind is a high-functioning mind and one that’s less tolerant of time-wasting activities. Believe it or not, exercise works in the same way sleep does. It can focus your state of mind, helping you to clear your head and boost your brain power in between study/ work sessions. If you’re new to exercise, aim to fit in a 10-minute run here and there, steadily increasing the amount you do as you go on.

The human brain is the central organ of the human nervous system, and with the spinal cord makes up the central nervous system. The brain consists of the cerebrum, the brainstem and the cerebellum. It controls most of the activities of the body, processing, integrating, and coordinating the information it receives from the sense organs, and making decisions as to the instructions sent to the rest of the body.

The Human Brain

Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if you never use your brain, or abuse it with harmful chemicals, your ability to think and learn will deteriorate.

Here are 5 simple ways anyone can squeeze a bit more productivity out of the old gray matter.

1. Minimize Television Watching – This is a hard sell. People love vegetating in front of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity OR allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise.

Don’t you feel drained after a couple hours of TV? Your eyes are sore and tired from being focused on the light box for so long. You don’t even have the energy to read a book.

When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.

2. Exercise – I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy. Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate more easily.

3. Read Challenging Books – Many people like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style.

Once you get used to reading challenging books, I think you’ll find that you aren’t tempted to go back to page-turners. The challenge of learning new ideas is far more exciting than any tacky suspense-thriller.

4. Early to Bed, Early to Rise – Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than sleep deprivation. You’ll be most rejuvenated if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late and compensate by sleeping late, you’ll wake up lethargic and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most tranquil and productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes your mental acuity all day.

If you have the opportunity, take 10-20 minute naps when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness. Anything longer will make you lethargic, but a short nap will refresh you.

5. Take Time to Reflect – Often our lives get so hectic that we become overwhelmed without even realizing it. It becomes difficult to concentrate because nagging thoughts keep interrupting. Spending some time alone in reflection gives you a chance organize your thoughts and prioritize your responsibilities. Afterwards, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s important and what isn’t. The unimportant stuff won’t bother you anymore and your mind will feel less encumbered.

I’m not saying you need to sit on the floor cross-legged and chant ‘Hmmm’. Anything that allows a bit of prolonged solitude will do. One of my personal favorites is taking a solitary walk. Someone famous said, “All the best ideas occur while walking.” I think he was on to something. Experiment to find the activity that works best for you.

Conclusion – I hope you aren’t disappointed that none of the techniques I’ve proposed are revolutionary. But simple, unexciting answers are often the most valid. The challenge is having the will to adhere to them. If you succeed in following these 5 tips, you’ll be rewarded with increased mental acuity and retention of knowledge.
